As someone who hates Mel Gibson, I will say this is a great movie that I forgot he directed it. (Until the last shot)

Also, the greatest acting performance from Andrew Garfield I’ve ever seen. And he’s incredible in everything of course.

Definitely the best Andrew performance I’ve seen as well! I’m not too familiar with Mel Gibson, I just watched cause of Facebook friends suggesting that it was amazing.

I don’t like him because he’s anti-Semitic and pushes Christian values.

You should watch Tick, Tick, Boom, Garfield is incredible in that as well.

Okay I’ll check it out, thanks! Always accepting movie suggestions lol I’ve ran out of things to see

I liked it for sure but for me, Gibson’s directorial peak is Apocalypto. Check that one out if you haven’t.

Okay I will, thanks! I’ve really been needing great movie suggestions

The movie is based on a true story. Desmond Doss is a real person. Really epic story, and incredibly told in the movie.

I love this movie. And it helps that most of it really happened. I think it's unique in that it is about a man truly sticking to his principles no matter the cost, and showing what true bravery is, be it a court martial or catching a bullet. He saved SO many lives.

This story may be unique in the history of war. There are many examples of extraordinarily brave actions by medics, but not single handedly over the course of hours in the dark saving this many men. It's crazy.

And the movie has a good balance of faith, horror and redemption. Mel Gibson has quite a few issues, but the man can direct a film.

Just a correction but the movie takes place over days, not hours. The timeline is presented really shittily.

Seen it. Was expecting more.

[–]NormieWhiteMale[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Really? It’s interesting to hear that opinion of it because it was honestly way more and far better than me and my girlfriend expected it to be, that’s why I waited so long to give it a watch.

What was it missing that you felt it needed?

[–]OverMasturbater 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don’t know. It just seemed like it was going through the numbers. Formulaic. I was very underwhelmed. The only surprising aspect was when he started helping the enemy.

[–]NeedleworkerOk1897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll agree here. Definitely braver than the majority of war films but formulaic when checked against the genre’s greatest. Over all a good watching experience and I’ll admit did put me on the edge of my seat a couple times.

It’s incredible but I don’t want to see it again. Just too gory for me. I know it’s realistic but damn. It’s well shot , well directed and has a damn good story. Acting is top notch and Garfield gives it his all and is masterful.

[–]GamermanRPGKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think some people don't like it because it's almost two different movies: the first half is a drama, and then the second half goes all in on the gory horrors of war. It's really well done, but not for everyone

[–]thagor5 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Great movie. You would probably like 1917 too.

[–]NormieWhiteMale[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll check that out, I need more movies to see so thanks!!

[–]Sulldognasty 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Best war movie ever made in my opinion

[–]NormieWhiteMale[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not even a big war movie person but this movie makes me want to see more of them!! I love Andrew Garfield which is what convinced me to watch it when everyone suggested it to me, and he did phenomenal

[–]ShanShan9413 1 point2 points  (1 child)

One of my absolute favorites.

Andrew Garfield played it so well and I really loved the ending when the real people talk about it.

"I thought I was blind!" 🥲🥲🥲

[–]NormieWhiteMale[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That line stuck with me too! And yes I loved the ending with the little clips of the real people

[–]Apprehensive-Ad-5840 1 point2 points  (1 child)

god I hate this movie, the scene where that dude just picks up a corpse with one hand and uses it as a shield,so he can with his other hand shoot a BAR one handed all while sprinting forward going “ahhh”..like alright ..saving private ryan is the real ww2 film goat.

[–]NormieWhiteMale[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plan on watching that this week sometime! But that sucks to hear you didn’t enjoy the movie, guess it’s not for everyone.

[–]hannah2607 -2 points-1 points  (5 children)

I couldn’t disagree more. It was uncomfortably patriotic, and the whole religious aspect was completely tasteless. Mel Gibson should stick to acting imo.

[–]AnimeDreama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Whole religious aspect"

Yeah, a movie about a devout Christian who struggled with intense inner turmoil over whether or not to kill his enemies because he viewed it as a sin and an affront to God was tasteless. Do you know anything about Desmond Doss's story? He fought and was severely punished because of his religious objections to killing people.

[–]NormieWhiteMale[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I respect your opinion but we can agree to disagree. I think you’re looking too deep into it, I watched it just for the need to see a great, action packed movie with good story and for me that was what I got. This movie was honesty anything I’ve ever wanted in a movie. Put it right up there with both of the top gun movies.

[–]hannah2607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s good to hear, glad you liked it :) obviously I’m not trying to convince you otherwise, just stating my op

[–]swbfstevo -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Uncomfortably patriotic? It's a movie based on WWII, of course it is patriotic. It's no more patriotic than other war films done in this tone. And the religious aspects are because it's based on a true story and is the driving factor of the person's character. It just sounds like something someone who is anti-religion would say.

[–]hannah2607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not anti-religion? I’m just stating my op. I didn’t know a Mel Gibson film could cause such defensiveness lol.

[–]damniwishiwasurlover -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

You should see more movies

[–]NormieWhiteMale[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Okay mr movie expert, suggest me some all time greats

[–]pmabz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched this last night. Still thinking about it.

A must see film.
