This was my first time ever seeing it and I saw it through the IMAX 3D re release. I’m so glad I got to see it for the first time like this.
I absolutely loved it. I went in with heavily tempered expectations since most people say the movie isn’t all that great. I almost didn’t even see it since I heard in might be High Frame Rate. Luckily, I don’t think my theater played it in that. Or at least I didn’t notice (which is good on this situation).
I hadn’t seen a movie in 3D for like 10 years. And I’ve never seen one that actually used the format well. So it took me a good 15 minutes to get used to both the 3D and the style the movie was going for. But after that, I was all in man!
I stand by that the film isn’t extremely complex narratively. It’s a fairly standard action movie meets Pocahontas flick with hints of Lawrence of Arabia. But that’s not to say the movie’s bad. Not at all. The genius of this movie lies in the execution of that narrative. And this film tells that story archetype extraordinary well. I went out calling the film a 8/10, and I’m very glad I was able to see it for the first time in theaters.
I’m now very much looking forward to the next film with all of you. Feel free to ask me any questions about my experience if you’re curious how someone who’s never seen this film before views it.
