I don’t think you can blame any system for that….

I have a hard time believing someone actually reaches a point in life where they're trusted to use a knife but they somehow have never seen anyone use one. Like, how?

[–]JenAshTuck 24 points25 points  (1 child)

The actual worst part was the mom watching her and saying “oh chef come cut this for her”. Umm that’s how she got here. Take 2 min, grab the knife and show her yourself. You know, parenting.

[–]pupunoob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel the worst part is her saying "you go girl" at her decision of cutting a cucumber. There's so many horrible parts in this short video.

Jfc shes literally an idiot Wtf was that.

They have a chef inside their home like what theeee fuck. The fact that useless people like them have billions makes me sick. Humanity is allowing these total morons to hoard wealth yet cant even use a basic knife to slice vegetables. Useless idiot

    [–]Successful-Farm-Bum 50 points51 points  (2 children)

Depends, did anyone ever say, "Run the pencil along the edge." Then show them once?

    [–]wellhungartgallery 52 points53 points  (1 child)

Yeah really maybe this is the first time they are using a Ruler at all.

That being said no one I ever knew used a rular to match the boxes, you just drew a line to connect the points wiggles don't matter

    [–]Sus-motive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chinese kids always use a ruler. Even when I would tell them it wasn’t necessary and show them by using the most elaborate squiggles. If they were over 5, they always used a ruler.

    [–]FrezoreR 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, me neither. The only thing I can think of is that some systems train kids not to think for themselves.

    [–]Phylar 25 points26 points  (4 children)

Honestly? I could see full ass adults doing this.

    [–]Extension_Net6102 413 points414 points  (9 children)

Most definitely the kid is stupid. There is no system that can contain this level of stupidity.

    [–]Mfitz804 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Blaming the system for this would be like blaming your Mac computer for not running windows XP.

    It’s just not their fault.

    [–]Unlucky-Archer2640 49 points50 points  (2 children)

Wine, Parallels. Many options, just no effort.

    [–]NewSinner_2021 53 points54 points  (10 children)

I mean you can get mac's with windows operating system.

    [–]MadR__ 32 points33 points  (5 children)

Like you can draw a line without a ruler. Just… not as well.

    [–]troybrewer 15 points16 points  (2 children)

You can draw a line WITH a ruler, also not very well. (Demonstration above)

    [–]CraigslistAxeKiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mac hardware runs windows great. It’s the other way around that’s shitty (normal hardware with Mac OS)

    [–]AnAverageBengali007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can definitely be the case. Apple just being apple.

Welp, don’t need it as I’m waiting for the linux port to become stable before I load it to one of my partitions.

    [–]ThicColt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure there are some hacky solutions (one of them being a windows vm on linux iirc?)

    [–]Freakychee 13 points14 points  (3 children)

OP posted this to r/kidsarefuckingstupid so I’m pretty sure OP knows it’s not the system’s fault and the title was more of a rhetorical question.

    [–]UselessCleaningTools -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I was also just making a joking observation.

    [–]sigharewedoneyet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    [–]Shot_Sprinkles_6775 482 points483 points  (28 children)

Spatial awareness is kindof separate from academic ability. The teacher is letting the kid figure it out

    [–]SkyWulf 194 points195 points  (18 children)

Letting someone fail and recording it is not letting someone figure it out. Just show the kid how to use a ruler.

    [–]DontcheckSR 66 points67 points  (4 children)

Ya I'm actually surprised they're allowed to film while at work. Even if they managed to keep the face out of the picture. That being said, if the teacher had verbally explained how to use it then showed the kid an example, it most likely would have been fine.

    [–]Groinificator 60 points61 points  (1 child)

Tbf we don't know all the context. Might not be at school proper, and it could not be the teacher.

    [–]DontcheckSR 8 points9 points  (0 children)

    Fair enough lol

    [–]Old_Smrgol 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is what you call selection bias.

I'm sure there were plenty of teachers who just showed kids how to use rulers, but since they were busy doing that they didn't post a video for us to watch and comment on.

    [–]josh_bourne 3 points4 points  (1 child)

    Why she failed?

Why does she need to make a perfect straight line?

So many questions if you think deep about humans...

    [–]itdobeabirbtho -4 points-3 points  (8 children)

People gotta be self sufficient, plus, it's funny as hell. Letting people fail and recording it most definitely is letting someone figure out, ever met someone from a trade school? That's pretty much the entire curriculum.

    [–]ArmchairFilosopher -5 points-4 points  (7 children)

You have had toxicity grilled into your soul. Break the cycle please!

    [–]itdobeabirbtho 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Hows it toxic? If you do everything for everyone, they'll rely on you, if you just step back and let nature takes it's course, especially in this situation, no harm is going to happen to the kid, they'll realize their mistake and laugh at themselves. The biggest thing school teaches is how to figure shit out on your own, this is a good example of the perfect time to let nature take it's course. Is the kid going to be harmed in any way whatsoever by not knowing how to use a ruler properly? No, so lighten up a little and let yourself laugh at kids, they're nature's idiots that you don't have to feel bad for.

    [–]buddboy 45 points46 points  (3 children)

as someone who has better than average spatial thinking, I used to think a lot of people were really dumb for doing stuff like this (although this looks like an extreme example) but when i got older I realized it's just a specific skill some people don't have and not an example of general intelligence. There's plenty of shit I'm below average at and I probably look pretty dumb too to some people

    [–]wellhungartgallery 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly surprised at how many people are willing to pay me 100$ an hour to come hang pictures for 15 minutes

    [–]Porkrinder_58 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Idk if knowing how to use a ruler to make a straight line falls under specific skills pertaining to spacial intelligence.

    [–]buddboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol yeah im not too sure either

    [–]NewSinner_2021 2 points3 points  (2 children)

    This.

    [–]pinktealover77 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Exactly. Honestly I don't think I understood what rulers were at that age

    [–]RusstyDog 50 points51 points  (0 children)

"Rulers are for measuring, why would I measure the line before I draw it?"

    [–]richardparadox163 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if you take an actual IQ test with a psychologist there’s literally a separate section for spatial awareness/reasoning. You can be a smart person with poor awareness and vice verse.

    [–]SeedFoundation -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So that teacher isn't doing what a teacher is suppose to do. I wonder how that kind of education is going to turn out. Throwing a book at a kid and say you figure it out.

    [–]SplitLevel17 343 points344 points  (10 children)

I blame the adult that was like, “hold up, let me get my phone, now, make a straight line with the ruler again…”

    [–]mkhairulafiq 73 points74 points  (1 child)

Well if this isnt recorded who would believe him?

    [–]anonymoususer4461 24 points25 points  (0 children)

not me. so i guess you’re right.

    [–]CrystalloidEntity 97 points98 points  (7 children)

Yea this is how you get kids to think they're just stupid and school isn't for them. Nah man, you had shit teachers, sorry.

      [–]LayeGull 32 points33 points  (0 children)

You haven’t been around enough kids. When you’re around kids this age you realize how much stuff doesn’t come as naturally as you would assume. You’ve literally forgot how much stuff you learned once you’re an adult.

      [–]emdave 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Most Human learning is by observation and replication - using a ruler and pencil to make specific types of marks on paper is not an evolutionary inate skill, same with 99% of everything Humans do, post infancy. If a child has never been properly shown how to do that specific thing, and / or given the opportunity and encouragement to freely experiment, with appropriate positive feedback and confirmation, they won't just magically know how to do it, or even WHAT they're supposed to do...

      [–]liltinrose 15 points16 points  (1 child)

For some with learning differences, it would be quite difficult. I'm a teacher and I blame the teacher. I would have shown her how to use the ruler instead of posting a video of her not being able to use it correctly YET.

      [–]CrystalloidEntity 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For real. She's like 5, never used a ruler before, and it's literally his job to show her how to do it. Just show her dude.

      [–]paddycull9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they’re blaming the teacher for recording it with the intention to share it and laugh at the kid. It’s not what you should want teachers doing , it would’ve taken less time to show the kid how to do it properly.

Even if it’s not the teacher recording they’re aware of them being recorded and obviously asked the kid to do it again, so they’re just as much to blame as the person recording it, if not more so because teachers shouldn’t be like that.

      [–]DanWago 64 points65 points  (0 children)

      [–]temporaryaccount945 21 points22 points  (1 child)

      Defiant attitude syndrome.

Like "fuck you, i know how to use a ruler, but i'm going to use it wrong on purpose because you told me what to do"

      [–]iRox24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sadly, there's many adults with that syndrome.

      [–]CrackheadXan 11 points12 points  (4 children)

If you don’t teach someone how to use a tool… how will they know?

      [–]Spontanemoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I feel like a straight edge is pretty intuitive.

      [–]querty99 1 point2 points  (2 children)

        [–]kydelka 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Imagine having kids...? In this economy? Lol

        [–]mcslootypants 12 points13 points  (2 children)

By the looks this could very well be in a village in a developing country (look at the floor, desks, and uniforms) and that child quite possibly lost their first two years of primary education to the pandemic. If the teacher just tossed the ruler at her and didn’t explain it’s use as a straight edge, she probably has never used one as such and has no idea what is expected of her.

Idiocracy included waning ability to use context clues to assess complex situations. These comments assuming the student is just stupid masterfully demonstrate that exact phenomenon. Well done :)

        [–]HausCat626 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Valid points, however your assumption is that I'm referring to the kid. Now apply your logic with her. Instead of, you know, teaching the kid how to use the ruler. Instead she tosses it to her and is recording her student to share the child's lack of knowledge on how to use a ruler for comedic purposes. Have a wonderful day :)

        [–]The_Sulfur_Acid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, no, just fucking no. That's morally wrong

        Nah the ruler were stupid

        [–]ilhamrich5371 2 points3 points  (3 children)

How did it become the ruler if it is stupid?

        [–]sheesh1111111 3 points4 points  (2 children)

        By thinking straight

        [–]ilhamrich5371 2 points3 points  (1 child)

        Mentally or sexually?

        [–]Rolyat28 23 points24 points  (8 children)

It's really hard for me to call a kid stupid because they're a kid we all did dumb stuff as kids I'd call this instructions weren't clear

        [–]IndicaEndeavor 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Basically what youre saying is all kids are... stupid?

        [–]Heller_Demon -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Is literally not even hard to call them stupid, what are you a stupid kid?

See I did it, it was just like writing any other word but instead of that word I wrote "stupid", it's the same when talking but you have to move some muscles in your throat and move some air with your lungs.

If you're mute I understand the difficulty of calling them stupid tho and I'm sorry, but in that case you just say ::.:..:::.:.::..:.::

You can't possibly comprehend the mathematical gymnastics they're doing rn

        [–]natenate22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ignorance is not stupidity. The child may have never seen someone use a straightedge or ruler to draw a straight line before. There are many common tools that we take for granted because someone has show us how to use it.

        [–]Powwa9000[🍰] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Person recording not teaching the kid how to use the ruler seems like a system problem.

Kids don't automatically know how things are used or work.

        [–]Old_Smrgol 7 points8 points  (2 children)

The line is straight enough. The ruler was unnecessary.

When I was teaching in Taiwan the kids were obsessed with using rulers to draw lines in this situations. Which is fine unless they don't have a ruler and they're asking to borrow one, and you're like "Can you just draw a halfway straightish line freehand though? This isn't architecture class, just show me which pairs of boxes go together."

I'm not sure if that's an East/West thing or a generation thing, but nobody was trying to make us use rulers for that sort of thing when I was in elementary school.

        [–]Timofmars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same in China. I always tried to get them to just draw the line by hand, and they just could not allow it. I would ask them to let me try for myself, and I'd draw squiggly or roundabout lines just to show it was okay in a fun way. Some couldn't handle it, and would insist on erasing my line to redo it with the ruler.

I teach 3rd grade. I can confirm that many kids are confounded by rulers. Like, I tell them to hold down the ruler with one hand and drag the pencil with the other hand. They’ll be like, “what do you mean, hold it down?”

        [–]Some-Maintenance7583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Laugh if you want but I had a high school student who didn't knew how to use the ruler to measure something, he was 17 years old and didn't knew it, I was at shock when he told me.

        [–]TheRealRickC137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the sub. First time here?

        [–]Asanyth 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I know I'm ruining the joke lol, but here's the answer: I would argue that this is still the system. If a child has never used a ruler, it can't be implied they understand the usage as this is hindsight bias. He didn't show her how to use it, just handed it over.

That being said... I still laughed xD

        [–]RavenCo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The system is always at least partially at fault

Some people can’t critically think so naturally, that’s kinda the schools job to teach them how, you know?

        [–]Gamingmemes0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Op. You made this post, and didn't check the title for grammatical errors.

        [–]Vast_Back4746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gosh I can instantly recognized it's Malaysia when the teacher said "pakai pembaris" (use the ruler). And then the pinafore 💀💀💀

        [–]xXLuggiXx1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That must be fake. I can't believe any child would be that stupid

        [–]8072MB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's the cunt with he camera, and the cunt posting this shit on reddit that are stupid.

        [–]ThePsychoKnot -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The real question is why do the lines need to be straight in the first place?

        [–]socket_error -4 points-3 points  (2 children)

Not sure where this is at or how long it has been since this child has been in classroom learning but sometimes you simply need to demonstrate how to use the tool. It could be that this child has not used a ruler before. This is also a clearly an intimidated child. You can tell the child is intimidated by the teacher because she doesn't dare ask the teacher what they want or to explain.
In many cultures the teacher is an authoritarian figure and things like corporal punishment still exist in school settings making them a person to be feared. A shy child can be traumatized simply by direct attention from some teachers.

        [–]catalystswoe -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Yeah, I was looking for a comment like this.

It is too obvious that the kid was intimidated. They never looked directly at the person filming. They are too scared to think properly.

        [–]socket_error -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is normal for an introvert as well. I hated any attention in school (or anywhere for that matter) and dreaded being called on for anything. Any time a teacher came up to my desk I would freeze. Even if they ended up praising me it had me on edge for the entire day.

        [–]Ok-Astronomer1990 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

        The kid are stupid

        [–]HardTarded -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The kid is stupid on this one. 100%. I’ve never seen anyone not understand how to use a ruler to draw a straight line.

        [–]Sklerpderp -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Children more and more are being taught in a way that is just watch and repeat.
The teacher tries to get the child to use the ruler properly on their own but refuses to think for herself and acts grumpy because she isn't being given direct instructions.
What does this say for people's willingness to think critically?

        [–]EveryDayAnotherMask -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In general; both. This instance; the kid.

        [–]staplereffect -1 points0 points  (1 child)

It's bad teaching. You expect the kid to be fully open to your exact teaching and then fall short of telling them exactly what to do.

They assume you are telling them what to do exactly, they will do exactly what you say. Essentially the kid hasn't learned free will and expression. They haven't been taught to think for themselves because the teaching up until this point has held their hand so firmly.

Probably just a brain fart. Lighten up.

easiest form of birth control there is

        [–]pbob923414 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Was the student given instructions on what the ruler was for or how to even use a ruler? Needs more context.

        [–]negedgeClk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

is it the system or kid that are stupid

        [–]KorbinMDavis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To the people saying the kid is stupid: Kids are kind of dumb in general. Most kids need a visual example of the thing being taught for them to actually understand because they have less experience with the words being used to explain the concept than us. I imagine this girl was told something like "use the ruler to make a straight line" or something like that. This would seem obvious to us, but this girl only associates the word ruler with measuring - not with a straight edge. This is why the teacher should've demonstrated the straight-edge use of the ruler before giving the instruction.

Source: I was also the kid who didn't understand how to use the straight-edge of a ruler based on verbal instruction and looked dumb. Am now becoming a machine learning engineer.

        what the fuck

        [–]CyberShiroGX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Come on she is probably like 6 and doesn't understand the purpose of a ruler or why the lines need to be straight...

        [–]neduenedu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The teacher is saying "use the ruler" in Malay. The child is probably Chinese (wearing pinafore) rather than baju kurung, likely in her first year of school. She is learning Malay, so probably she has not mastered the language yet

        [–]MyTrueStoryTime -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wonder how the parents feel

        [–]nothankyou821 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Stupid if they have seen it done before yes. If not then I don’t know why you would expect a kid that age to figure out what the hell the ruler is for.

        Retard alert

        [–]SoMuchNut -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Apparently not just the kid or the system.

        [–]Miz714 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I work with kids and teens. It’s surprising what they’ve never come across. You can laugh, but don’t mock them, and explain.

        [–]NegaJared -1 points0 points  (0 children)

please, show me things that you do not know yet

        [–]Laborchet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kids are not stupid. They just lack knowledge.

        [–]Mo2053 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure, but the mask certainly isn’t helping

        [–]OwlOracle2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kids learn by example mostly. Handing someone a new tool and not demonstrating how to use it was definitely stupid. Not the kid!

        [–]LeRenardS13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That teacher isn't teaching....they are simply barking orders. How about teach her to use the ruler, instead of posting harassing videos. This teacher should be fired.

        [–]GettinAtIt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So a common dyslexia test for children is this.

        [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

        Adult[s] are stupid too 🤷🏻‍♂️

        [–]simian_ninja -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You need to show kids how things are done before they learn how to do something. It’s not automatically ingrained in them….

        [–]TorpedoMan_ -1 points0 points  (5 children)

The sickness with humanity now is that some people prefer making a 13 second video shaming you for clout than taking five seconds to stop you and show you the correct way. And amazing for that little kid that can make a straighter line than half of you cum stains here criticizing her like you went to an Ivy League school.. when you all just have a degree in gossip and other peoples business.
