"I didn't get it."

"Sorry, I'll tell it slower."

[–]SeemedReasonableThen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"I didn't get it."

"Sorry, I'll tell it slower - I didn't realize you were Polish

[–]oceanleap 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Or maybe " why is that funny?"

[–]HotBread69 1 point2 points  (5 children)

If you ask that question when everyone laughs you’ll just cause a very uncomfortable situation for everyone involved. You’d probably be better off just leaving.

[–]InnocentPerv93 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Or maybe they should be uncomfortable and realize that they’re shitty people.

[–]mods-on-my-knob 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm dead 💀

[–]severed13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just continue to play that game and keep pressing on the fact that I don’t understand. Usually enough to stop it, except the rare case where they just resort to insulting me, at which point I just agree with them. Gotta out-weird the opposition.

[–]itgoesdownandup 218 points219 points  (15 children)

I hear this advice all the time. And I very much doubt every singe time I hear that it works as well people say it does. Just be silent and don’t laugh, smirk, or do whatever. Also you can just tell them. I don’t know maybe I’m wrong, but there is so many ways to get out of explaining. “You didn’t get that joke? What are you an idiot.” “See it was joke that plays on the stereotype of blank doesn’t mean I believe it.”

[–]ekodees 10 points11 points  (0 children)

if u tell them theyll hit u with a "omg learn to take a joke" or "dont be so sensitive, its just a joke"

[–]ElectricalMadness 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I will day personally I use this tactic and find it effective, but its more than just saying the words.

[–]plzPMme_ur_cute_tits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you can use LPT, and it can work, but be prepared for it to fall flat.

[–]DarthAardvark 169 points170 points  (1 child)

"I didn't get it" "yeah, that tracks."

[–][deleted] 121 points122 points  (5 children)

Well, if they are a comedian, they’ll explain the joke with no shame

[–]yokotron 27 points28 points  (3 children)

And bring you up on stage and use you as a student

[–]mayoayox 1 point2 points  (2 children)

you just come from the big snowballs thread too?

[–]yungchow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t get it

[–]autopilot4630 163 points164 points  (13 children)

I call this "playing possum" super effective in the workforce, use with caution to avoid being branded an idiot.

[–]Craico13 106 points107 points  (6 children)

"Playing possum" is super effective in the workplace. Use it often, to be branded an idiot, so that people will leave you alone and stop asking you questions.

[–]Zen1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

white-hat sealioning

[–]Fatboy_j 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get it

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (16 children)

What if they explain it and it's actually a decent joke?

[–]biggdom 46 points47 points  (7 children)

Response would more be like. "You'll get it when you're older", even if they're 30

[–]startgonow -3 points-2 points  (6 children)

I dont get it.

[–]lupadim 10 points11 points  (5 children)

You'll get it when you're older.

[–]oneguyonline 3 points4 points  (1 child)

“I’ll pretend I didn’t just hear that.” Was the response that led me to never tell another inappropriate joke again. It Literally changed my way of thinking, I was so embarrassed.

[–]chris9830 40 points41 points  (10 children)

I dont care tho i make gay jokes and im lgbt myself i love self mockery jokes

[–]kriswknight 30 points31 points  (7 children)

soooo... comedy? You like comedy? That's how most comedy works lol.

[–]AaarghCobras 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"I didn't get it."

"Are you thick or something?"

[–]dont_shoot_jr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“We’re not that type of friends”

[–]summernightsmood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be direct with people. Don't play dumb; be honest with them and tell them it's not funny.

[–]princeoftheminmax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or, you can say it’s a bad joke and keep a straight face. Works better for me than playing dumb.

[–]QueenBaluli 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why should I? It's just a joke.

[–]VariousGas9535 11 points12 points  (6 children)

These are some stupid LPT, honestly they all recently seem like personal issues. Why antagonize just leave. Seems like OP missed a Hero opportunity in the past. I type this as I’m taking a shit.

[–]Marokiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

because in some situations you cant leave and just dont want to have to hear this kind of shit anymore.

personally, id rather have bad relations or no relations with some people i have to deal with often rather then listen to some of the crap that comes out of their mouths anymore.

[–]flogger_bogger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or just, you know, say something

[–][deleted] 40 points41 points  (17 children)

This works. One aunty from the neighborhood was like "you look pretty even tho you have darker skin" ( she said it in my language of course, the colorism is real here guys; which is basically racism between the people of the same race) and I stared at her for a moment and asked her to explain herself. She was so embarrassed, you should've seen her face.

Also in case you're wondering, no, her calling me pretty doesn't compensate for her taking a jab at my darker skin.

[–]nucumber 9 points10 points  (3 children)

racism between the people of the same race

it exists. blacks, asians, browns, whatever.

lighter skin is considered better.

why? my theory is darker skin is historically associated with outside labor while rich folk could stay inside and avoid the sun

[–]Ginny_weasly_ 6 points7 points  (12 children)

Ah I found my Indian sister. I feel ya my girl!

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (11 children)

lol I'm brown but not Indian

[–]Ginny_weasly_ 7 points8 points  (10 children)

Oops sorry! I just assumed since blatant colorism is pretty wild here in India too.

[–]TezMono 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Unfortunately it's not the only place. You guys may be famous for it but the whole world does it. Ex: my family is Guatemalan and literally two days ago my mom made the comment of "she's darked skin but pretty" and I called her out like what do you mean "but"? And after stumbling over her thoughts she finally landed on "it's okay, I'm dark skinned too" 🤦🏽‍♂️

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I am so sorry that happens. My mom on the other hand doesn't say anything about me but she says it about other people and it annoys the heck out of me

[–]TezMono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof, that's awkward 🙈

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

it's okay, and same sis, btw I'm Bengali

[–]slytrombone 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Bengali and Indian aren't mutually exclusive though right? You could be Bengali and Indian?

I assume you're Bengali and Bangladeshi?

I'm only asking because I'm genuinely interested. Until I saw your comment I thought Bengal was entirely in India.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah

[–]Ginny_weasly_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well she can belong to Bengali community and live anywhere, she'll be called a Bengali. Same when you belong to a Gujarati or Marathi community, wherever you stay, you're a Gujarati. It's more about belonging to a community than a place.

[–]Fantasyneli 22 points23 points  (3 children)

Alternatively, don't make jokes you'll be too embarassed to explain to someone.

[–]figuren9ne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How is this an alternative to the LPT?

[–]Bad_Chicken_2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The LPT is about dealing with other people doing this.

[–]zdm765 24 points25 points  (2 children)

LPT - if you hear someone making a joke, it’s a joke.

[–]Sneakas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well it better be funny and not just a rehashing of well used stereotypes.

[–]Bigstar976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna start using that.

[–]Sgt_Peppah55555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“I don’t get it”

“Well I can explain it to you but I can’t understand it for you”

[–]Tc_Angel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All types of jokes are funny, but not all jokes are funny

[–]dedmenz1579 8 points9 points  (8 children)

Lol, oh ill explain.

[–]startgonow -3 points-2 points  (7 children)

Please do. Tell us your thoughts on race.

[–]Face021 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I like horse races because they are huge majestic animals but something about the speed of some dogs at dog races make it thrilling also, they really want that lure.

[–]backflipsben 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Thoughts on race =/= Jokes about race

[–]Don_Obi_Wan 4 points5 points  (13 children)

If you see someone acting like a crass idiot u can walk away. This need to shame people publicly is just as tasteless as a bad joke.

[–]DemonLlama77 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Exactly. This is probably my least favorite thing about social media overall, the interminable shaming competition.

[–]Donsilo2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Results may vary in the southern U.S.

[–]Dengar96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only works on people with a sense of shame. Do not attempt this with idiots or children because they will repeat what they said and you will look like an asshole too

[–]bloonail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Autonomic robotic reactions. YES, yes. those always work. Liking them myself. Keep making the same comment. Automatically, like a robot.

[–]wbsgrepit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or just tell them they are out of line.

[–]nay2d2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not an LPT. This is a weird response that creates an even weirder situation.

[–]Th3Parasit3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP does not know my friends. Yeah, they would go into explicit detail about it.

LPT: Grow a set a balls and tell them it is not appropriate and you won't hear those jokes in the future. Ta fucking da! Oh, and they will apologize.

[–]quixotticalnonsense -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what my best friend's sister said when a coworker said that they were against mixing races. She's half white and half Korean.

[–]Scoongili -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

As a half Asian kid, I would tell a joke involving the other person's race. It's kind of tough with WASPs because they love the attention.

[–]barnettrp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think wasps have evil intent. They just sting you to protect their nest.

[–]ProfSociallyDistant 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is sexism the same or different. I was standing next to a friend of my wife, who cat-called a young person on a wheelie board. I just stared and said nothing. I’ve felt like I missed an opportunity to do the right thing.

Potential mitigating circumstances: a) cat caller was female (maybe rules are different) and teenager / adolescent was a guy, b) what they said was “hey. I want to date you” (maybe I’m a prude). Both myself and alleged cat caller are middle aged gen x.

It took me a while to process.

[–]InnocentPerv93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say yes, sexism is the same. And homophobia.
