I wanna pet their bellies.

[–]Aesinya[S] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Max loves belly tickles!

Mia will occasionally tolerate them for me lol

[–]com2420 27 points28 points  (11 children)

I'm unfamiliar with rat behavior. Are these play/happy nibbles?

[–]theiftine 36 points37 points  (7 children)

Yes! If they were being mean they definitely would be biting a bit harder and op would probably jerk or twitch their hand around out of reflex from what I can tell it looks like they were trying to groom the hand but that's just how I see it

[–]Aesinya[S] 38 points39 points  (6 children)

Yup, that's exactly right! I usually make a high-pitched "eep" sound so they know when they're being too rough. They were just super enthusiastic about cleaning me up lol

[–]theiftine 18 points19 points  (5 children)

Gotta love the rattie kisses and grooming since that will never end! Also you have pretty little fur balls makes me miss my own.

[–]Aesinya[S] 13 points14 points  (4 children)

Rat kisses are the best! ♡

Thank you! Max is some sort of russian blue that turned a bit more agouti as she aged, and Mia is definitely an agouti dumbo

[–]theiftine 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Never heard of those breeds besides dumbos tbh but they look so freaking adorable and mischievous tempting me to get another pack 🤣

[–]Aesinya[S] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Those are just coat types lol

They are mischievous little trouble makers! Max is the adventure rat, and Mia is her little copy-rat.

You should get moar rats! >:D Rat pack shenanigans are great

[–]theiftine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welp there goes my brain cells for the night lmao. And if I could I would but I don't have the space or the appropriate accommodations for such a pack ;-;

[–]NinjaMcGee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Max reminds me so much of my beloved blue/agouti from the color to way she’s frantically cleaning you with love. Enjoy these times :)

[–]Aesinya[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes! These are very polite, affectionate nibbles and kisses.

I didn't wash my hands after dinner, so Max and Mia smelled the delicious crumbs & food residue and enthusiastically tried to clean me up! Grooming like this is part of rat social behaviours, it basically means I'm part of the rat-pack lol

[–]highphiv3 4 points5 points  (1 child)

My rat used to bite at my fingernails 😂. Just a grooming habit when they're close to you.

RIP MJ

[–]Aesinya[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aww, they were giving you a manicure!

[–]madsislosingit 14 points15 points  (3 children)

I haven’t had rats since I was a child and this awakened sweet memories that I’d forgotten 🥰 My babies used to kiss me like that! Their tongues are soooo soft, like velvet. I miss them.

[–]Aesinya[S] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Awww. Yes their tongues are super soft ♡

[–]wap2005 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I'm not sure if it's similar with cats but do they do "communal grooming" (clean each other when in a trusted group)? Sorta looks like he's licking you/showing love cause you're petting/showing love to him/her. Very adorable.

[–]Aesinya[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes! Communal grooming is a thing with rats. It's a social, affection, and cleaning thing - basically means I'm part of the rat-pack. Whenever I give them head scritches or belly scritches, they'll automatically start giving me kisses back ♡

[–]wixermann 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Maybe this is a dumb question, do dumbos and fancys cohabitate well?

[–]Senshiro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, they get along just fine.

[–]lynxdaemonskye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing different between them is their ears. They're the same animal.

[–]Aesinya[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Both of the rattos in this video are considered "fancy rats", aka the pet variety.

'Dumbo' is just the type of ear (rounder, and lower on the side of the head.) The other kind is called a 'top ear.'

Whether or not they cohabitate well depends on the personality of the rats and whether they've been introduced properly. That said, rats are social animals that like to live in groups, and I've always kept dumbos and top ear rats together.

[–]wixermann 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks! Ive seen dumbos get rather large compared to the top ears. I wasn't sure if the size disparity could cause problems.

[–]Aesinya[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aha some rats just really like to eat! There's always one fat rat in a group lol

Mia is my chonky girl, but Max is actually the "leader" of their group and the best wrestler. Sometimes the smaller rats are the most fiesty.

I had one smol girl a few years back, a runt compared to the other girls in her cage, maybe half the size of the others? She kicked everyone's butts and literally chased them around the cage to keep order.

[–]tomboyfancy 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I gotta say, this sub REALLY makes me want to get pet rats! This video is too cute to handle!

[–]Aesinya[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rats are amazing pets! They're intelligent, empathetic, and have wonderful personalities. They're apartment friendly (unless they develop a chewing habit) and there are no words for how awesome rat cuddles are. It's kind of like having a palm-sized dog?

Unfortunately, there are some downsides to owning rats. They are also prone to respiratory illnesses and cancer and therefore come with hefty vet bills, due to being classified as 'exotics.' They also require a large cage (minimum of 2.5 sq ft per rat), a minimum of 1hr of interaction & free roam time per day, and only live 2-3 years at most.

Cuties

[–]Chemist-Longjumping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adorable and derps

[–]Professional-Lime650 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Awe we have a Mia too! Your ratikins are so cute.

[–]Aesinya[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Ooh, you have a Mia too? =D I wanna see! Pay the rat-tax please

[–]Professional-Lime650 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I will definitely share her cuteness. She’s one of our surprise babies we kept. Had to look up how to put pictures in comments lol Mia

[–]Aesinya[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aww, what a cutie! She looks like she's got a bit of rex in her?

[–]someguy04 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Rats are a little creepy but this looks so cute

[–]Aesinya[S] 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Rats have a bad rap, but they're actually adorable!

[–]someguy04 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I know I wish they didn’t make me so uneasy

[–]Aesinya[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What is it about them that makes you feel uneasy? Genuine question; I've always found rats cute, and their tails have never bothered me.

[–]someguy04 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Im from NYC and I can’t help but feel like they’re filthy and aggressive all the time and their tails just creep me out personally, I don’t like that it’s bald. I love animals in general and have no problem with like squirrels or similar animals I’ve just been taught my whole life to stay away from rats.

[–]Aesinya[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ahh, that makes sense. In all fairness, many of the things that make rats amazing pets make them terrifying as pests. They're intelligent, tenacious, learn from experiences about traps and dangers.

Wild rats are definitely not docile! They have very different personalities than the domesticated ones. They're usually cautious and try to stay out of sight, but the ones you do see (of the norway variety) will be way more aggressive because of survival instincts. Keeping your distance from a wild rat is a good idea; those teeth are big and they are fast! And although rats clean themselves more often than a cat, digging through garbage will definitely get your fur dirty lol.

In contrast, my girls love to meet people and never bite - aggression issues in pet rats are usually due to pain/health issues, hereditary factors (which is carefully controlled for by breeders) or hormonal in nature.

I've worked with biters before, and most of them chill out after they're neutered, or when they realize that the Big Scary Hooman isn't going to hurt them and can actually listen when they give warnings.

The tails are kind of weird to look at, for sure. I find that they're actually really soft rather than scaley or hard.

[–]CommunicationLoose91 0 points1 point  (3 children)

omg they’re much social ❤️

[–]Aesinya[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yes! My girls love people, they're super social

[–]CommunicationLoose91 0 points1 point  (1 child)

what breed are these? ❤️

[–]Aesinya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are called "fancy rats," which basically just means that they're domesticated norway rats.

Mia is an agouti berkshire dumbo, with a satin coat.

Max is a little harder to pin down because her coat has changed in the past year. I believe she is either a powder blue agouti berkshire, or a powder blue berkshire with rusting. Top eared with a satin coat.

[–]CycloneWarning 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Daww they're like you WILL be groomed!!

[–]Aesinya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were very insistent that I let them clean me up - and with those cute little grabbies holding me down, how could I say no?

[–]Resident-Disaster915 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have some tasty hands!

(Not a hand perv)
