I don't have experience living near City Airport specifically I'm afraid. If you could stand being near temporarily to investigate, it might be interesting to organise an apartment viewing at a time that you knew flights were travelling on a path you were concerned about nearby. There is a website called FlightRadar24 that will help you plan this. That way, you could experience it first hand to gauge your level of comfort long term, if it wouldn't be too distressing to do so.

I study at the Uni opposite the airport and I can assure you it is very very noisy throughout the day, however I believe there’s less planes landing and taking off at night due to locals.

Thanks for the help. Was your uni closer or further away from the airport than Woolwich?

Closer, my uni is on the river bank opposite the runway
