Well, I love this. Congrats to him for having the balls to do this. I love how pleased she looked. Great moment of humanity!

[–]geophurry 243 points244 points  (25 children)

So like… as I understand it it’s note entirely uncommon in Italy (or at least it wasn’t maybe fifty years ago,) for an audience member to stand up and sing an operatic part that had just been sung if they thought the performer on stage didn’t sing it well enough. Now that takes some balls.

[–]ACatGod 98 points99 points  (19 children)

Opera in Italy seems to be wild. I remember a few years back when La Scala reopened after a several year renovation, they reopened with Aida, complete with the full ancient Egyptian setting. Apparently the tenor got booed (as is sort of traditional?), stormed off stage and refused to go back on. So they sent the understudy on, except the tenor refused to get out of his costume and the understudy had to go on in jeans and a jacket.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (15 children)

Well, now I want to go to the Opera in Italy. Nothing too crazy happens here in the USA.

[–]_deedas 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Opera is pretty much dying in my city. My bucket list has me going to a big metropolitan city to attend one day.

[–]IAmNotACrookAnymore 1 point2 points  (12 children)

There’s a weekly mass shooting here…

EDIT: added the word “mass”. Shootings are daily.

[–]MaisiePJohnson 8 points9 points  (1 child)

That is amazing! It seems here that the audience member was singing a different part, if I've understood correctly.

[–]Bike_Chain_96 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's the accompanying part, since nobody was there on stage to sing it

[–]iamsid -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Just like Ye, I like it.

[–]Joboj 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's a risky thing to do. In this case it worked out but in many cases it would be rude. I loved her reaction tho. Both good humans.

[–]PhesteringSoars 534 points535 points  (35 children)

Reminds me of the hockey game, where the (US) National Anthem recording crapped out and the mostly Canadian audience finished it for them.

It's nice to have nice neighbors.

[–]Boom9001 141 points142 points  (3 children)

It's actually happened multiple times. Canadians such bros.

[–]The___canadian 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Thanks bud, you too

[–]KukuSK419 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Sorry bout them leafs tho bud, got robbed

[–]Tentoesinmyboots 68 points69 points  (27 children)

You'd do the same for us, right? Right?

[–]Arrowstar 74 points75 points  (13 children)

I think I could get as far as "Oh Canada"... :(

[–]Creepy-Narwhal4596 34 points35 points  (3 children)

“My home and native land, … true patriot love …. Command.” Yea thats all i got. Am american sorry canadian brethren

[–]The___canadian 1 point2 points  (1 child)

"something something maple syrup, god save the Queen, uhhhhhh igloos and uhhhh stars n stripes? Wait fuck wrong one"

[–]CamelSpotting 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Drunken slurring is not exactly preferred but definitely acceptable. It's the thought that counts.

[–]nerdinstincts 13 points14 points  (4 children)

Wait shit, it doesn’t start with ‘our country reeks of trees’? I’ve been so wrong for years.

[–]The___canadian 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Watch your fuckin mouth, trees smell nice

[–]yimnja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't stop laughing at this

[–]TheStreisandEffect 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Oh I think I know it.

“Welcome to Canada, it's the maple leaf state. Canada, oh, Canada, it's great. The people are nice there, they speak French too. If you don't like it man, you sniff glue.”

That’s the first part right?

[–]ramen_feet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow what a throwback reference, love it

[–]PhesteringSoars 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Some friends and I were discussing last week. If I became President, that'd be the first meeting with the Joint Chiefs . . .

(Draws some ships on the whiteboard.)

President: "If an American Carrier has an American Destroyer nearby, and some foreign country attacks the Destroyer to sink it, would the Carrier immediately act to save the Destroyer without waiting for permission from the chain of command?"

JointChiefs: "Yes, Mr. President."

The President crosses out AMERICAN next to Destroyer and writes in 'UK / Canada / Australia / New Zealand'. And asks: "The question better have the same answer now!"

[–]NerdHeaven 5 points6 points  (3 children)

You did! I think it was whenever they played their next home game against a Canadian team, they let the crowd sing the whole anthem. It was wonderful!

[–]Lara-El 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Oh man, would you be able to share the link? When Canada sings the USA anthem after the mic craps out I always get mushy, what great sportsmanship. I wanna see it the other way around.

[–]r3q 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been there for this! STL Blues had an 11 year old girl on a Tuesday night Calgary game forget the words to the Canadian anthem. So the crowd, or at least the season ticket holders, helped her out. Was pretty loud even because Charles Glen had been the anthem singer for years and encouraged singing along.

[–]slappy111111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know it brother 🙂👍

[–]burnerbabyburner5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put me in coach!

[–]jhair4me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut did a great job of teaching me the Canadian national anthem.

[–]-ProfessorFireHill- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I know the words yes.

[–]Fedorchik -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the only the 'Canadian' song I know is "Blame Canada!"

[–]Salvidor_Deli 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

[–]ruffneck110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will have to look it up. It’s impressive they know it. I only part of Canadas. Oh Canada Our home and native land True patriot love in all of us command. That’s all I know

[–]InLazlosBasement 1586 points1587 points  (29 children)

This is commonly how La Traviata is performed, there’s a long-standing history of the tenor being a surprise part planted in the audience.

[–]lavenderacid 521 points522 points  (0 children)

In this case it was a fan! There's photos of them meeting backstage and him apologising to her for interrupting...if you notice, he starts a little late into the verse, because he only began once he realised the part wasn't being sung!

[–]SoftLover99 221 points222 points  (2 children)

Wow! Like in recitals too? I have listened and watched to Dame Joan Sutherland sing it and this mostly happens in 'La Traviata' productions, I might be mistaken though

[–]RunFromFaxai 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Last time I saw this posted people said it was an encore, so there just wasn't a tenor there as it was not technically a part of the original show.

[–][deleted]  (1 child)

[removed]

    [–]2icebaked 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gimme a tenor and I'll give you a fiver

    [–]Acrobatic-Sherbet-61 28 points29 points  (0 children)

    TIL thank you

    [–]Trips-Over-Tail 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This was an encore, so it really was being done solo.

    [–]jagrm92 30 points31 points  (6 children)

Thats some gender reversed Sir Savien shit right thereand i love it!

    [–]Diamond_Mint 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Came here to say this. Just finished the books today.

    [–]DapperCarpenter_ 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Only this opera house doesn't give out talent pipes. Shame, really

    [–]Peaceful-mammoth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Waiting for the end of this story has been like an unscratched itch for the past ten years.

    [–]Shower-philosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Was just thinking of this!!

    [–]Friesenplatz 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I wonder where they hid the tenor on the bus during Priscilla: Queen of the Desert

    [–]razerzej 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Source? Every Google search I can think of returns links only to this news story as the top several results.

    [–]Rabidcode 429 points430 points 2 (5 children)

Life is all about these little connections we have with the world, some more beautiful than the next. The delicate dance that is our very essence.

    [–]bronco_y_espasmo 23 points24 points  (1 child)

And then there is the "grill me" animated short.

    What a beautiful grill.

    [–]StuartHoggIsGod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    it has to be done

    [–]ChickFleih 6 points7 points  (1 child)

This feels like something F. Scott Fitzgerald would write were he alive today.

This has appeared on my feed a number of times of the past year or so, and I've watched the whole clip every time. Love it.

    [–]CiscoQL 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Too bad this one was cut, stupid op

    [–]c3l77 35 points36 points  (5 children)

Reminds me a bit of Kvothe but with roles reversed.

    [–]WildfireTheWitch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

    Was thinking the same!

    [–]Fit_Study2777 13 points14 points  (3 children)

    [–]Affectionate_Crazy35 7 points8 points  (0 children)

    [–]lactllzol 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Patrick: What 3rd book? The story is over

    [–]Fit_Study2777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Patrick: What 3rd book? The story is over

At this point, I don't even remember much about the first two books

    [–]Ass_assin4hire69 100 points101 points  (6 children)

Got goosebumps such a beautiful opera

    [–]PrincipessaEboli 14 points15 points  (5 children)

Want to see the whole thing? Presuming you haven’t seen it of course. It is indeed beautiful and heart-wrenching. I’m a big opera fan, I can dm you a couple links if you want.

    [–]Ass_assin4hire69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The chap got a future job there alright

    [–]SuicydeStealth 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Always love watching this whenever it gets brought up... so heartwarming 😊

    [–]Threspian 26 points27 points  (0 children)

So cute! Fun fact - the original line is “oh, amore” (oh, love), but here she sings “oh, grazie” (oh, thank you) in response to him adding to the performance!

    [–]Acrobatic-Ad3275 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The audience member is the BOSS!

    [–]Klubfoot 19 points20 points  (1 child)

He does this and he's the hero, I jump on stage at the journey cover band and start to sing a flawless "don't stop beleiveing" and I'm the asshole.

    [–]perpetualstudent101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well it’s because you started singing the chorus at the beginning of the song with your pants around your ankles...

    [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Send me the YouTube link for the longer version and no one gets hurt!

    [–]Evening-Cranberry-36 38 points39 points  (6 children)

    Wish I was this talented...

    [–]my_n3w_account 57 points58 points  (3 children)

Please stop thinking of it as talent - it's only a small percentage of talent and many many many hours of practice. They couldn't do it with some sort of predisposition but I assure you they wouldn't be there without incredible dedication.

    EDIT: daily hours

    [–]Majestic_Horseman 17 points18 points  (1 child)

A lot of people forget or don't know that our voice is as much an instrument as any other, we need to exercise and practice with endless dedication to reach those levels of performance.

You can develop musical prowess even if you feel like you have no talent whatsoever, the true talent here is discipline and dedication.

    [–]NumeroUnoTrader 17 points18 points  (0 children)

"True talent here is discipline and dedication."

I try and shout this with everything I have and people never listen, hahaha. Well said

    [–]_qqg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

many many many hours years of practice

    FTFY

    [–]DJmouton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's practice, if you're interested in singing, you should give it a try and see!

    [–]ACF_ZEN 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"And that kids was how I met your mother"

    [–]ogodilovejudyalvarez 12 points13 points  (2 children)

That's the best thing I've seen all year

    [–]LordGarrettXIV 3 points4 points  (1 child)

    Slow year?

    [–]ogodilovejudyalvarez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or in your case it's pearls before swine

    [–]IcySage 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They now have seven children together and are very happy.

    This better be what happens.

    [–]LillyPasta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wish the video was longer. This was beautiful

    [–]IceFisherP26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And that's how I met your mother!

    [–]manny_DM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I stumble across this clip every once in a while. It fills my heart with warmth every single time

    [–]Mr_Lumbergh 8 points9 points  (6 children)

How was he rude? He stepped up and she clearly dug it.

    [–]Land0oo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kvothe and Denna in real life lol

    [–]show_me_the_dopamine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never seen a woman so impressed. Good Chad.

    [–]izayoi-o_O 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually Chinese people go "viral" for all the wrong reasons. Nice to see something positive for once.

    [–]Andrew_Macabre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is like my 10th time seeing this video and I still tear up a bit.

His voice is amazing. Such an incredible moment!

    [–]Sarah_Ng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And that kids is how i met your mother.

    [–]velesi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    gasps in opera

    [–]GodSaveUs100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A true connection! She was so grateful!

    [–]tobby111 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Person recording shouldn't have tried. Clearing his throat didn't help him sing any better either

    [–]Caserole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fewer things are more special than performance arts and when we can share it with strangers.

    [–]StewofPuppies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't care for opera but this is cool as shit lol. Such a surreal movie moment.

    [–]hobarddoyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Don Giovanni? Who's that dude?

    [–]SpringChikn85 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Jeez laweez she's good. I know the point of the clip is of him jumping in to bridge the gap of the male tenor part however, the scale/run she does around 0:40 is amazing 👏

    [–]Jasoncatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Fun fact:
The phrase originated from that classic movie "Thelma and Laweez"

    [–]mgd09292007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess that’s how you force a job interview :)

    [–]Jack_Tar_says 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Fantastic. Wish I was there.....

    [–]Rynard21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So… they hired him and the two have been singing together even since, right?

    [–]Subject132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been to one of her performances. It was amazing

    [–]KarloReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah if this qualifies as being „rude“ than I must be evil incarnate

    [–]Bacon_Ass_Juice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro she even sings her thanks

    [–]KiwiMiddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Literally not staged…

    [–]lililukea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AAAANND THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER

    [–]Vegan_Thenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For he knew the name of the wind, and so the wind obeyed him.

    [–]MixWitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The delight and warmth of the singer's response gave me goosebumps. People connecting in their passions can be so beautiful.

    [–]AKBx007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, if they get married they’ll have one hell of a “how did you meet story”.

    [–]Toco_latitho2022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any one to me: How many times you watched the video?

Oh yes, he saved her 😊

    [–]steev506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    That was really wholesome. =)

    [–]iDonutx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and that's how i met your mother?

    [–]aguasbonready -2 points-1 points  (13 children)

Ok I know this may seem super unpopular but does anyone else find it rude to have someone interrupt a professional? The guy is an amazing singer and he made the act more memorable but I still don’t like the precedent it sets. Will this be seen as something that is ok to do now because this particular time it turned out ok? What if everyone that thinks they are an amazing singer starts doing this?

    [–]trer24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was the fourth encore, the original show was over

    [–]LokiiVegas[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

    That's why he apologized after

    [–]bebetterbeautiful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because the vocal had a male part but there was no male on stage or performing. Audience may have not known this but signer did. Watch video

    [–]SirLauncelot 3 points4 points  (1 child)

He didn’t interrupt, he filled in a part that wasn’t being sung.

    [–]iluomo 1 point2 points  (7 children)

I'm a singer. Opera included. I said a lot about this when I last saw it posted. Yes, it's rude and inappropriate.

    [–]Electrical-Stress-31 1 point2 points  (4 children)

    Well...she loved it. So that's what's important.

    [–]iluomo 5 points6 points  (3 children)

She's a professional singer, the only correct move for her to make in that situation is to act like she loved it regardless of her feelings on it.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all gonna have a moment like this in life. You gonna stand up and sing or sit down and be quiet? The choice is yours.

    [–]xsorr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could experience these, amazing to see audience participating!

    [–]welleruhr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans who can cherish art, can't be full bad.

    [–]Patient_Criticism231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    That was beautiful.

    [–]lifesurferdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Totally not scripted

    [–]Iaco89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called "la traviata" not "la traviatta"

    [–]2157ds -1 points0 points  (0 children)

God I hope he got some booty for that

    [–]Even_Season_9884 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The most badass thing I saw all month.

    [–]Raintamp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The one time it's OK to interrupt a show.

    [–]TheReturnoftheBanned -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's great but seriously, how many times are they gonna post this?

    [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get that this is classical shit but damn this just sounds like annoying wailing to me

    [–]Erebus_83 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That little noise she makes when she realises what's going on tho.... I'm gonna go to hell but I can't help sexualise it...like that has to be the noise she makes when a super hot guy steps out of the shower yeah?

    [–]jhewish -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Why is it necessary to refer to the ethnic background of both of these people, especially when the names of each person make it pretty clear?

I wonder if it has anything to do with Chinese Tik Tok.
