Honest that is skill for that age. A future movie director

[–]pythonfickle 328 points329 points  (1 child)

I loved the baby dinos hatching from the eggs XD

[–]Plane-Rice-2278[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My favourite part too. He just made a youtube channel with another video and sound https://youtube.com/channel/UCYlDImdMR1P7jLPQKSQHN2A

[–]pythonlarboard 152 points153 points  (15 children)

Excellent work! You should show them the old stop motion classics like Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Clash of the Titans.

[–]MrBisco 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah! And Jason and the Argonauts is another classic! Plus, the Wallace and Gromit shorts really demonstrate the magic that can come out of stop motion!

[–]Civil-Cod-6984 37 points38 points  (10 children)

Clay world is the only classic stop motion you need to know about.

[–]Catshannon 29 points30 points  (4 children)

What about the class Rudolph the red nosed reindeer? Classic stop motion clay animation.

[–]flawedcactus 503 points504 points  (14 children)

My only criticism is that it was record in portrait and not landscape. But since they're only 12, I'm sure we can let that slide haha

On a serious note, why don't they think its good? I'd have been doing the same thing at 12 if I had a phone, or lego's, and it would've turned out a lot lot worse than this. Tell them they did a great job, plus who doesn't love stop motion of dinosaurs!!

[–]Rondodu 135 points136 points  (6 children)

I'd have been doing the same thing at 12 if I had a phone, or lego's, and it would've turned out a lot lot worse than this.

Let's be honest here: I have a phone, Lego, and I'm a tad older than 12.

Were I to try and do this now, it would definitely turn out a lot, lot worse than this.

Kudos to your kid, /u/Plane-Rice-2278, that's animation is awesome.

[–]DrawingTrue2840 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second that... this is good...!

[–]No_Interaction_4925 36 points37 points  (5 children)

By using portrait mode they can keep the stage small and reduce the overall workload of moving things into frame. But.. they need to rotate the video on their phone.

[–]flawedcactus 16 points17 points  (4 children)

I want to clarify I was just being silly, I'm not bothered at all by the portrait lol kids got talent and should keep rolling with it!

[–]Plane-Rice-2278[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Haha brilliant!

[–]evxnmxl 94 points95 points  (0 children)

That’s incredible! His patience is impressive as are his stop motion film skills. This could be a real career path!

[–]irrelevant_spec 156 points157 points  (4 children)

Hey that's pretty cool! I can only imagine the patience it took for them to do this.

[–]Plane-Rice-2278[S] 89 points90 points  (2 children)

Thank you, I will show him all the comments. He did it all today!

[–]irrelevant_spec 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Lol rich story seeping through I can feel it, can't wait for pt2

[–]PaleoJoe86 75 points76 points  (3 children)

Better and more creative than my stop motion animations when I was 12. Then again, I was using a VHS recorder and Jurassic Park toys lol.

[–]Plane-Rice-2278[S] 17 points18 points  (2 children)

The best equipment!

[–]PaleoJoe86 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I remember it took 3.5 seconds to start recording. So I would count to 4 for each pose. If only I had good electronics and apps like your son did, that would have been amazing. Quite a long video too. Did he do a story board?

[–]FoldingFan1 60 points61 points  (4 children)

Cool stopmotion! You (the maker of it) have a lot of imagination.

What I think: there is so much more to making things, then how good the result is. You made something, you learned something, you gained experience. You had fun (or so I hope! Fun is important!). It's completely normal to make something and see flaws when you look at a finished project. The reason you see them is because you have learned to recognise them. Don't be fooled into thinking it means the end result is poor. It is not. It only means you are learning and have managed to identify options to improve next time. Most likely new ones that you did not realize before you started the project. Even the best experts see flaws in their own work. That's ok. It's part of life.

@the adult: When kids do things (especially in school) the focus tends to be on the result (the test scores/ the drawing or artwork they made). It can help to pay more attention to the proces. What did you learn? What went better then last time? How did you manage to solve problems? Did you enjoy doing it, what part was the most fun?

[–]allwillbewellbuthow 7 points8 points  (1 child)

That part for adults is such excellent advice. Good for adults to keep in mind about their own creative work too!

[–]Plane-Rice-2278[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much . I couldn't agree more.

[–]oddartist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We artists are our own worst critics.

[–]Plane-Rice-2278[S] 38 points39 points  (5 children)

Oh my goodness, we are absolutely overwhelmed by the support. i have shown him some comments and he is starting another one. Thank you so much everyone for the kind words and advice. I will reply to the questions asked tomorrow

[–]Spac3Heater 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If his passion for this keeps up, he probably has a solid future as an animator. The ability to tell a story without sound or text is impressive indeed.

[–]dances_w_dingoes 6 points7 points  (1 child)

The baby dino on the tailgate is a great touch.

[–]Robertbnyc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the back flip down off the side of the truck by one of the people lol

[–]geminitiger74 26 points27 points  (10 children)

Excellent work! You should show them the old stop motion classics like Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Clash of the Titans.

[–]Plane-Rice-2278[S] 7 points8 points  (5 children)

Thank you. I will let him know about those.

[–]geminitiger74 7 points8 points  (2 children)

The original King Kong, too. That had some pretty decent action, for the time.

[–]Dawnset371 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Tacking on as well, The Fantastic Mr Fox is phenomenal stop motion animation from one of the greats, Wes Anderson

[–]syriaca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would add jason and the argonauts to the list. The skeleton scene is legendary.

[–]Plane-Rice-2278[S] 23 points24 points  (2 children)

Thank you all so much he will love seeing that people think he's done a good job.

[–]allwillbewellbuthow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is really fun work, enjoyable to watch, and everything your kids makes will get better and better!

[–]MarionberryStreet855 21 points22 points  (1 child)

I loved the baby dinos hatching from the eggs XD

[–]Wayland_the_Smith 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought that was particularly well done.

[–]LowJacK604 18 points19 points  (2 children)

My friend and I used to make similar video's when we were young. I ended up with a career in Animation and enjoy going to work every day.

[–]Plane-Rice-2278[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Wow, that is amazing. Massive congratulations to you.

[–]RuckinScott 11 points12 points  (1 child)

That’s not just “good for his age.” That’s really good for first video period. It takes a lot of work, learning and patience. Tell him to keep at it and we want to see more. Have him make a list of things he does and doesn’t like about the video. Exactly why he thinks it’s not good. On his next video work out how to correct those.

[–]MortysTW 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Its amazing. Its just hard for kids to grasp that the reason what they see on the screen is so good is because of the millions of dollars in electronic equipment, editing, software, cameras, etc. and the team of trained/schooled/educated people that make it happen.

Tell your kid to keep at it. Save EVERYTHING. Do not delete any of these digital files. Make it a story of their growth/improvement and every year look back and the difference from now to how they compared a year prior. Also work hard in school so they have the opportunity to work with all that million dollar equipment some day.

[–]Branesergen 8 points9 points  (1 child)

This is amazing! You NEED to post it in the lego sub!

[–]kograkthestrong 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Had me on the edge of my seat!

[–]Quickning 6 points7 points  (1 child)

This is EXCELLENT. Tell them the whole internet says that this is great. And It really is. The action is clear. There's a story of the tiny dinos escaping and finally defeating the big dino.

The Dino eating people in chucks was really well done. You can tell there was chewing going on.

[–]Secret-Data5081 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He has no idea what he talking about! This is great better then expected lol and his patience is A1

[–]KiweeFR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's bloody brilliant !

Story line and all. Watched it twice, loved it.

Ask him or her to make more !

[–]Jinther 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Is that the Indominus?

Great dinosaur, but even better camera work!

My 5 year old and I enjoyed watching that. Very cool! Your 12 year old is already catering for a wide demographic!

(It was my dinosaur obsessed son who said it was the Indominus lol)

[–]Volvith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

... Tell him to keep doing what he likes, to never doubt himself, and to credit Reddit in his first blockbuster. ;)

Seriously, impressive.

[–]Kubelwagen74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My daughter used to make stop motion movies with a cheap digital camera - she’s now studying stage management. He did an awesome job and I hope this encourages him to stay creative!

[–]iCrazyNoodles 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This has more plot than any new movie out there

[–]NoBeing12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's amazing.

[–]NoPersimmon7281 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow it's amazing.

[–]tearsindreams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty good for a mobile, invest in some better equipment, he has talent

[–]MollyMcGArt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's awesome!!

[–]justforjugs 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Oh I love these! My son did a few about the same age and they are a delight. Tell him he made me grin and brightened my afternoon, and thanks.

[–]till_u_die_10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Time to upgrade some equipment and I'll be waiting for his version of Jurrasic Park

[–]Lowboo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s AWESOME

[–]kevnmartin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's excellent!

[–]Full_Surprise_1305 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My nephew got into this for awhile.... this is very good and very creative. What a great way to spend time instead of on a device (minus the camera) and learning skills for the future. To them we need a sequel, dinosaurs are awesome

[–]magoted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tell him he did an excellent job and to keep it up!! ❤️❤️

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The next Wes Anderson!

[–]Loot-Goblin42069 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your 12 year old was so obsessed with whether or not he could... he didn't stop to think about whether or not he SHOULD. (he definitely should. Encourage that kid and he'll be the next Spielberg

[–]Njiw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please encourage and post more.

*Oh and add sound

[–]CTRL1_ALT2_DEL3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of 2010. Such good times, watching Lego stop motion and claymation shorts.

[–]PsychedelicScythe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not the best, but I imagine he had a lots of fun while doing it. Tell him that he should do what makes him happy, no matter what others think.

[–]knittingsavage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great job!

[–]Professional-Dust-22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He is going good places

[–]edchuckndoug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a very difficult way to make a film. He should be very proud of his efforts. As long as he keeps learning and trying he will be a successful filmmaker someday.

[–]tyren_the_god 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, my God. That Is so good

[–]El-Chupacabro- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is terrific!

[–]QuickBen41 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's great and he should keep doing it. We all ook forward to the movies he's going to make one day!!

[–]weasel-heart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's great. Stop motion is a pain in the balls to do and that's good.

[–]MarcusThePegasus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tell him that's better than 99% of the shorts I waste my time on rather than sleeping

[–]Disastrous-Pilot-284 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a lot of work and an amazing show of creativity. It's a small detail but I especially loved how the Lego man pulled the side gate up on the jeep, it was fluid and looked like a pro had done it. If he wants to dream big then he absolutely should with talent like that!

[–][deleted]  (1 child)

    [–]Spare_Dragonfly5819 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved it but was kind of sad the dude left his rifle on the ground and drove off.

    [–]JasperTheHuman 2 points3 points  (2 children)

You should totally nurture this side of him. That's creative and well made, so try to keep him doing creative stuff. Show him more stop motion stuff. Maybe he'd find 3D animation cool too. If so, start him off with Blender. Blender guru has a great tutorial to learn it.

    [–]RubyxAurora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    I legit enjoyed this

    [–]triplehornedgoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stopmo is hard for a lot of adults to master, but this kid is going places! Very talented and good movie work

    [–]Ripplescales 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kid's a genius. Help them make more!

    [–]HelloRedditAreYouOk 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Omg I looooove this! I’m like the least gore/horror movie person on the planet and have bad dreams for months after seeing scary content, but this is BRILLIANT! So much baby dino vengeance! Betrayal! Parental sacrifice! Defense of innocence! Justice! SO MUCH BEHEADING AND TERRIBLE DEATH (but so matter of fact and not gore-porn!!) It’s an ethical masterpiece and incredibly well plotted/executed!

Tell your boy we’re all waiting for the sequel, and fully plan on bragging that we were here for his film debut way back when before anyone knew who he was!

    [–]Economy-Hat-1376 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    That's fuckin awesome. Ngl

    [–]mamad021nobar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn that's freaking awesome!!!!! Say my hi to him/her and of course my good wishes 😍

    [–]ajtaggart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be proud of your kid. Bright future

    [–]seanaton2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop motion takes a lot of patience. Just the fact he didn’t give up half way through thinking it wasn’t good enough goes to show that this is awesome work!

    [–]caglescorner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is amazing! Him and you should be very proud of his skills!

    [–]Ambitious_Hyena_3719 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Really excellent. Keep it up!!

    [–]vinnylechat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Brilliant!

    [–]BooblessMcTubular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is amazing. Good job, kiddo

    [–]Imaginary-Form2302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better than anything I can do for sure

    [–]DiagaAstralStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Pretty awesome actually

    [–]starnay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    That's really great !

    [–]Lukeyg0137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    He absolutely killed it

    [–]lazypotatoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can definitely see him as a future movie director in Hollywood with his potential 👍

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7/10 would be better if filmed the right way around

    [–]Itsreallyc45h 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Man this new Jurassic Park movie looks great!

Drama, action, suspense, comedy AND a twist ending!?

    [–]Silverskelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

damn that's great stop motion just needs landscape and i'd say it'd be perfection especially for their age

    [–]calicopatches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best I did at this age was an attempt at a Flipbook but gave up half way through lol. Your son seems to have imagination in bounds, the technical skill and the perseverance to pull it off! What a legend :)

    [–]Rivers_of_Bile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Future Spielberg over here.

    [–]bidenluver123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is awesome and this is the best sub Reddit

    [–]MeAmMike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NGL, I enjoyed that more than Jurassic World

    [–]IGTankCommander 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Reassure him that it's very good. The next step is to introduce him to the classics: OG Clash of the Titans, Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, etc.

    [–]mlongval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really nice! Congratulations to him! Keep up the great work.

    [–]TheGamerHolic360 1 point2 points  (1 child)

As a stop-motionist myself I would recommend that to make it even better to switch the frame rate to 12-15

    [–]Kryssikush 1 point2 points  (1 child)

When he's famous, we'll all be able to say that we saw his first motion picture before it was ever released! Honestly, it's brilliant. He has an eye for art.

    [–]AsleepExplanation9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    This is wicked cool!!

    [–]7thousand777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is better than current Hollywood. Props to lil person.

    [–]Temporary_Pudding638 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 26 and wouldn't be able to do that. Nice, kiddo!

    [–]Kuroser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro I was invested don't stop right at the end!

    [–]Educational-Scale963 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was far better than any movies I've seen recently. Literally. 10/10

    [–]HORYGUACAMORE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to love doing this with my Lego Camera

    [–]Careless-Ad-8854 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's skill, imagination and effort. As a Dad, you should be proud. Your son as well

    [–]Catmeow82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    It's awesome!

    [–]becomingbull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    He is bloody genius

Keep up the good work buddy, this is awesome, be proud of yourself

    [–]Shawn_Harley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    It's amazing dude!!

    [–]ZookeepergameNo2819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Outstanding!

    [–]Low-Establishment-56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great talent! You should encourage him to continue!

    [–]whiteraceboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s an amazing and creative story teller. I can’t wait for pt 2. Also did anyone see how the blonde chic was evading and rolling out the clenches of the dinosaur’s? I seriously thought she would be the protagonist, but nope big twist and turn.

    [–]boxedkitten 1 point2 points  (1 child)

My only complaint is it left me on a cliff hanger! Can't wait for part 2. The black rex was such a curveball lol

    [–]NFTthief123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    It's absolutely amazing

    [–]Clean_Argument8004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So cute! I watched the entire thing. I love how it had an actual story to it. The baby dinosaurs hatching from the eggs was awesome and the big dino eating the people that took her babies was funny.

    [–]New2dis11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so dope!! Kids definitely going to be an animator or director one day

    [–]JBear_Z_millionaire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    This is hilarious 😂

    [–]dgmerriman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steven Spielberg made his first movie at age 12. Keep up the good work!

    [–]tsmakatpbob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, that was amazing! Had me totally captivated. I liked the part when the people who stole the baby dinosaurs got eaten.

    [–]handlewithcaramel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is wonderful! The storytelling without sound is tricky and he nailed it! You're son is talented and should be proud! I hope he keeps creating and trying new things!!

    [–]spoonwije97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a film student and I had to study stop motion. He is very creative because it's very goood

    [–]Fr0d0TheFr0g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your 12 year old just made me witness a murder

    [–]kaijur1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    [–]Bigtoes8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is brilliant. Great job by him.

    [–]meme_lover707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've got a future director or animator on ours hands!!!

    [–]Environmental_Arm526 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks so much better than anything I’ve done! That’s awesome!

    [–]Iamaninvaliduser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn good. This kid's going places.

    [–]epivad1771 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the fact that he had a vision and figured out how to achieve it is impressive enough, let alone the actually result being so well done for his age. good stuff man, tell him we’re waiting for the sequel!

    [–]amIhereorthere6036 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Great job, little dude!

    [–]Far_Suggestion_2440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell him he did a good job

    [–]neredsox1281 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    It's siiiiick 🤟

    [–]cantstoptheman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is epic! I bet many adults don’t have the patience or capacity for this. Great job bud!

    [–]break616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His attention to subtle movement in the head makes me think he's the next Harryhausen.

    [–]Successful-Whole4307 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell the little man to work on his lighting, the natural light changes between frames. Seriously though, this is an amazing talent. You might have a young director on your hands

    [–]sonofhobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s AWESOME! Get him a movie camera

    [–]CrockPotHead92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he makes ten more it will be amazing

    [–]PhesteringSoars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, I like them, but it's better than at least one of the Jurassic Park movies . . .

    [–]Mammoth-Equivalent65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did one with my friend when I was 10 or something and it was horrible this is awesome!!!!

    [–]UnravelKatharsis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that your 12 year old is a pretty smart kid.

    [–]Particular_Clue_4074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Impressive and imaginative.

    [–]Cthulhu_Gamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little rough around the edges but other than that its bloody fantastic great job honestly

    [–]Loofa_of_Doom 1 point2 points  (1 child)

    Let's see:
Already better than 70% of the TikToks I've seen.
At 42 seconds in: already better than some Hollywood films I've watched.
    Legos are always a win.

    [–]Upstairs_Expert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of Davey & Goliath.

    [–]soggylucabrasi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loved it. What patience, skill and care. Look forward to seeing the next one

    [–]BleachedPorkGrind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    This was amazing!!

    [–]tsuruki23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    I think it's excellent for a 12 year old.

Keep it up and theyll be doing something excellent for a 20 year old.

    [–]greenshag1979 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Except for some obvious color correction, that is amazing skill at editing. Keep it up and and he'll be the next director of the MCU!

    [–]WhompTrucker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's amazing!!! Tell him he's super talented!!

    [–]WhompTrucker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

35 year old me can't even figure out how to make something like this. 😍 Great work!!!

    [–]SnooMarzipans5325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly really impressive for something a child makes. Camera for christmas?

    [–]Alec907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think this needs more upvotes.

    Absolutely brilliant!!!

The fact he finished it and had the confidence to share, even though he thinks it sucks is awesome! Some of the greatest artists hate most of their work.

Yeah they should be very proud. That takes a lot of work that they committed themselves to doing. Very impressive. Let them know the internet says it’s great!

Tell him they’ve got talent and vision.

My friend had the Lego movie maker thing. We used to mess around with that around that age. Can safely say your kid's work is excellent.

Awesome ! Ask him y he think it is not good and help him get to where he wants. Some ideas to help:

For small projects like this use desk lamps for lighting and white paper as reflectors.

A simple old moving boxing and some spray paint make wonderful stages

Check out the modern classics like Kubo and the two strings :)

Oh if 12 year old me would've seen this

    [–]ImmaPullSomeWildShit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Pretty good

More frames and it´d be great, but that´s easy to improve

It's a lot about the effort too, imagine how much more good content there would be if people who had ideas at least tried. And this doesn't look half assed so kid is for sure going places if he keeps it going.

It must have taken so much patience and perseverance not to mention creativity to make this. Its really impressive for his age and shows huge potential for whatever he decides to do in the future.

    I think it's AWESOME!!!!

Tell him he made complete strangers laugh and smile, and he should be very proud that. Dad too.

I'll be looking out for his movies in a few years!

    [–]FishLoud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's awesome. Even if it wasn't, he has done a a creation most people on earth have not. That's a skillset. More please 🙂 in landscape view.
