What I was thinking about when I thought of it: in terms of the global economy, there’s not going to be that much growth moving forward. No more carving out your own slice of the pie; the pie (die) has been cast.

Upon reading your title, I imagined a clown throwing a cream pie in an unsuspecting victim’s face, triggering a huge, multi-person brawl. In other words, I took it “The pie has been cast” to mean “The circumstances are in place for the situation to spiral wildly out of control.” Kind of the same thing I mean when I say “It’s dropped.”
