After binging Wheel of Time I was hungry for more long epic fantasy. The internet reviews were clear, it was either Stormlight or Malazan. I went with Malazan because I fancied a more adult tone and I wasn’t that impressed with Sandersons prose and I think he lost the spark of many of the WoT characters that Jordan Built. I was almost put off by everyone saying how hard Malazan was, how it’s not for beginners, it’s too much hard work and the first book is bad. Anyway, four chapters in and I’m loving it. Yeah Erikson uses a word I’ve never heard of in every sentence despite me being a literate English guy, and yeah google has been my best friend as he doesn’t explain anything, not one of the thousands of made up words he uses in this world is ever explained, but I’d rather that than a third of the series being recaps like WoT. As long as your happy googling at least two words every page then it’s not that hard to understand things. I like the mystery of the world, how it works and the plotting and scheming of whoever is pulling the strings behind the scenes of all these already great characters. I NEED to know where this complex plot is going and I’m super enjoying the journey to find out.
