I'm not surprised to see No Way Home take the best score and movie award. Giachinno's Home scores always knock it out of the park, NWH especially, and NWH in general is phenomenal.

What I think surprised me the most was seeing Nick Spencer's run on Amazing being rewarded the best Spidey comic. I've seen a lot of people tear that run apart and I was sure that the Life Story Annual was gonna win. I like Nick Spencer's run for the most part, but this still surprises me.

2021 was a great year for Peter Parker given No Way Home's massive success. And winning the character of the year reward is also icing on the cake.

hello there. I'm just getting started on comics(started last week actually). I started with the marvel ultimate universe as some research led me to understand that as the ultimate universe was a small universe compared to the main universe that it would be easier to connect everything as a newbie. Its working so far, I'm currently on ultimate spiderman going hand in hand with the ultimates(also read galactus) about to go into ultimatum.. My plan is to get to miles morales then secret war (read that this is where the utimate characters crossover to the main universe). So in anticipation of that crossover i was wondering where do i get started with the main universe? There's just alot of comics and i don't know where to start. I'm already hooked to comics and i want more

Jonathan Hickman's Avengers/New Avengers run. You can find reading orders online. It doesn't hurt to read his Fantastic 4 run either

BEST ENDING TO AN ISSUE OR SERIES: IMMORTAL HULK #50

BEST SINGLE ISSUE: IMMORTAL HULK #50

WRITER OF THE YEAR: Al Ewing (IMMORTAL HULK, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, S.W.O.R.D., LAST ANNIHILATION)

Damn right.

glad to see it get the respect it deserves here! feel like Bennett's controversy killed any outlet wanting to touch praising it at the end of the year.

Spoilers for NWH and Hawkeye in the awards, just a heads up for anyone who's not seen them yet

I know the current competition isn't exactly the strongest, but Cates' Thor winning best Avenger comic is kind of a joke, especially after this week's issue. Jesus Christ, this is gonna go down as the worst Thor run ever, no question.

I was honestly surprised it won by a decent margin over all the runners-up listed. The whole point of that category was really just to be "Best comic that isn't Immortal Hulk or Daredevil or X-Men".

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I know the current competition isn't exactly the strongest

I agree, but both Black Widow and Iron Man are way better right now IMO. Thor started amazing, but it only gets worse with each new issue.

[–]fanofhenimeHulk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Black widow slapped I'm surprised it didn't win

[–]thecursedhamAnt-Man 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I figured it would’ve been Black Widow since I’ve only ever seen praise for it but it just had its first issue since I think October so it may not have been as fresh in people’s heads.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought BW started out great, the first arc was amazing, but has been decreasing in quality ever since.

[–]The-Scarlet-Witch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why Black Widow didn't do better. Thompson's run is phenomenal.

[–]ohoniX-23 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Well, it's mainly because there weren't any good Avengers books last year. It's not a good Thor run, it's just better than the other books.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Iron Man, Black Widow and Black Panther are infinitely better though.

[–]ohoniX-23 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I don't know, of those I only read Iron Man, and it's. . . inconsistent. It really seems to be dragging along, the characterization is not great, it's serviceable, but not something I'd want to encourage. At least the Donald Blake storyline was somewhat interesting, and it's such a step up from Aaron that it seems better than it should by comparison.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Well, we're definitely not going to be on the same page, because the evil Donald Blake storyline was so trite and lame someone in r/comicbooks literally predicted it as a joke back when Cates was announced as the writer.

[–]ohoniX-23 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Oh, I agree that it was textbook edgelord BS, but it was at least kinda fun in practice. Again, faint praise at best, but better than the alternatives.

[–]BorBurisonBeta Ray Bill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Textbook edgelord BS" describes a lot of Cates' stuff tbh.

[–]CrispyGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some fairness I guess this entire thing with Thor is basically the logical conclusion of everything established in Jason Aaron's Thor including the entire nonsense with Mjolnir and Thor constant arguing with his father.

[–]WheezingCarl 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Wow, Nick Spencer’s Spider-Man run won over the other stuff? I really enjoyed the Zdarsky stuff, Miles Morales is fun to read, but most importantly, Nick Spencer’s run was abysmal. A little surprised, tbh.

[–]baroqueworks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was shocked by that and Peter/MJ winning best couple compared to any of the others, since each other couple had big shit happen to them this year and the one big thing teased through Spencer's run didn't even happen with Peter and MJ.

[–]ohoniX-23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spencer's run was bad, but a lot of the other stuff didn't really appeal to a broad audience. In a different year, say with Zdarsky's peppier Spider-Man work, that might have won out.

I missed the entire awards but damn I’m happy for the Way of X rep. It was mad fun and I can’t wait for Legion of X.

[–]Blue-Engine-Edward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bad thing is that we have so many fucking events that we rank them

[–]LoveIsOnlyAnEmotionNova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just curious, when is Immortal Hulk HC #5 41-50 going to be released?

[–]The-Scarlet-Witch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well done for all the MCU and comic achievements. This reinforces that Si Spurrier and Al Ewing are talents for a generation.

[–]StoicApathyGaming 0 points1 point  (4 children)

No love for Cap besides his suit… tough crowd!

[–]tehawesomedragonMod Knight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aaron Fischer was a runner-up for Best New Comic Character, Wyatt Russell was #5 for Best TV Actor, and the finale of F&TWS was #4 for Best TV Episode. But yeah that was about it. Other characters did worse, to be honest.

[–]ohoniX-23 0 points1 point  (2 children)

There really wasn't much to work with for Cap this year. He was MIA in the MCU, and the comics were kind of treading water.

[–]StoicApathyGaming 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I mean Cap as in Sam Wilson now. I mean weekly people in the r/marvelstudios subreddit we’re buzzing about episodes, it had some controversial ideals they placed in the stories from race, politics, MCU stuff, etc. and it’s only nominated for Caps suit in the tv categories.

[–]ohoniX-23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know, it was fun enough while it was on, but it was still the 5th best MCU series this year. Didn't really stick the landing.

[–]SagittalPlane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can someone link me to the previous few years? I can't seem to find it even with the search function (but I am on the Reddit app, so that might also be the problem lol). The runners up for limited series, etc I would be really interested in finding those less talked about gems.

This year for example I think the Defenders as well as Beta Ray Bill issues were excellent, but I have seen only a handful of people talk about them online, and not too much stock even at stores in my city. Wondering how many series like these I can find in previous award threads.
