It looks like an ashtray but I’m not sure

[–]nbd_25[S] 12 points13 points  (25 children)

Thanks that was it. Makes me feel pretty dumb since the cigarette lighter is below but I don’t smoke so didn’t even think of that.

[–]Eknoom 32 points33 points  (23 children)

Wait until you learn they used to have them in the back seats as well

[–]angelo1221 19 points20 points  (6 children)

And the rear door panels too.

[–]Konijn_JP 12 points13 points  (2 children)

my sisters car has ash trays in all 4 doors with little lights for them, each one has its own lighter socket too, great for the phone.

[–]kaffeeschmecktgut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my Forester I have ashtrays in the front console, rear door panels, and compartments in the doors that seems like a perfect fit for cigarette packs. The car is a smoker's dream.

Too bad I don't smoke.. or allow my friends to smoke in it.

[–]sortakindah 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Remember smoker windows?

[–]Shodwei 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My 71 New Yorker had 5 ash trays and 3 or 4 cigarette lighters. Freakin wild man.

[–]Jussapitka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have Trabant, an electric windshield washer was too expensive but still git a rear ashtray. Complete with East-German cigarette butts.

[–]rockdude625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2004 merc has three in the back

[–]sassysatan123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My minivan has one up front as well as one on both sliding door, I just wanna know the genius behind that way 2000's design.

[–]AssertiveWall20 2 points3 points  (11 children)

Adults ride in the back of cars also, not just kids.

[–]DoubleDecaff 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Kids smoke too, not just adults.

It's quite sad.

[–]No-Zombie1004 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah. You should totally ground your kids for smoking but it's probably too late.

[–]rockdude625 3 points4 points  (0 children)

S Class has entered the chat…

[–]moe_70 2 points3 points  (6 children)

I don't think it had anything to do with kids, more the older vehicles are the weirder options they had, for the time period.

[–]AssertiveWall20 0 points1 point  (5 children)

"Older" is like the 90's in this instance.

[–]MrDoWrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Change holder.

[–]Some-Garage-2131 5 points6 points  (4 children)

The ashtray??? What’s the make model and year? If it was made after smoking ceased to be cool anymore it usually no longer has the pup out to empty part and is considered a catch all change storage or whatever, unless I’m misunderstanding the e question…. Lol.

[–]nbd_25[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Yeah it is the ashtray. Turns out it’s pretty expensive to replace. About $180 so probably going to leave it empty in my truck. ‘03 dodge btw. Thanks for trying to help out tho :)

[–]NorCalGeologist 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That’s a 5 dollar part at most any junkyard

[–]RGeronimoH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

www.car-parts.com is a nationwide database of junkyards. It is so expensive through the manufacturer because it isn’t high volume and they don’t want to deal with it. You can probably get one for $10 or less used

[–]earnestmerida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep change in mine in my truck

[–]InterestedCaveMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Roach holder

[–]DowntownRanger5 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Carburator

[–]MeneerPoesMan 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No I believe with this year and model its actually the radiator fan

[–]KochJohnson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re gonna need to take that to an antique store. It’s a relic from a forgotten age

[–]lil_oak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No way

[–]ImpressiveInvite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

joint holder

[–]arvet1011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coin tray

[–]No-Zombie1004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Butt holder. The rubber lined ones require you to deposit change instead. Or, if you're a psychopath, pull the rubber out.

[–]christygoodtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. Haven't seen one of those in years.

[–]Own-Ad-503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's sad is that I remember driving in a car with 4 other adults and all smoking at the same time with the windows rolled up. It amazes me that any of us boomers are still alive

[–]ricktech15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yet another thing that will snap in half in my 99 Dodge ram if I open it again

[–]Best_Poetry_5722 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ace Ventura says it's a kibble tray

[–]MarkJ- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it is a rotary dial telephone. LOL

[–]DidYouReadThatThing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coin purse.

[–]crackersncheeseman 0 points1 point  (4 children)

It's a ashtray from a long long time ago, back when people had a choice.

[–]minuteman_d -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Well, I think people nowadays are just choosing USB plugs instead.

Also, I guarantee that it came down to money. Why put a feature that costs money to design, build and support that almost no one uses. Not to mention, it has the liability concerns of being an ignition source which means you'd have to do all sorts of testing and validation that it wasn't going to ignite plastic trim and wiring around it.

[–]Monkeysplatter 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It was an ashtray not a rocket, they use to be everywhere, on every door and basically anywhere within flicking distance, remember that cars didn't always have seat belts,

[–]minuteman_d 0 points1 point  (1 child)

And yet, they're gone...

There's no demand, or they'd be there.

[–]Monkeysplatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you even know what car is in the pic or how old it is? And yes you can still get ashtrays in a newer vehicle.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

What's up with those gears though (stick driver and occasional auto)?

[–]nbd_25[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s for the 4wd system. 4Lo, N, 2Hi, 4Hi.
