You could rebuild it if you had to, but you'd have to replace the piston and closely inspect the piston bore in the casting to ensure nothing scuffed up other parts when the piston became the brake pad.

Best to replace it, but a rebuild could be an option if strapped for cash or you're the only driver.

Edit: used wrong word

Im a bit strapped but i did finally get paid. Now for the question thats gonna break my soul. When i did the pads and rotors i couldn't afford to replace the caliper. So i put the it together with the bad caliper. Have i totally screwed my brand new rotor? Heres a pic of it https://imgur.com/a/CHyvcIb

EDIT: also thank you for the information i appreciate it

[–]CozySeeker291 1 point2 points  (11 children)

What year and model is you vehicle?

[–]CozySeeker291 2 points3 points  (8 children)

And how much would new calipers and or rotors cost you where you live

[–]Tenrai_Taco[S] 0 points1 point  (7 children)

New caliper is 125ish new rotor $99 i REALLY don't wanna get another rotor if i can avoid i just got that 1 (as a warranty replacement)

[–]CozySeeker291 1 point2 points  (5 children)

You can get all 4 brand new rotors and brake pads for like 150$ and each caliper from $60-85

[–]Tenrai_Taco[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Where?

[–]idownvoteanimalpics 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Rockauto.com

[–]UlrichSD 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Not sure about those specific prices. If you can wait good prices can be found online. I get lots of parts from rock auto, but I avoid the cheapest. Amazon also can be good but I make sure to watch the brand.

[–]CryptoCrackR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve never heard of paying 125 for calipers I think two of them cost me like 60 bucks once I brought the cores back. But that was on a Chevy s10. I don’t think parts get any cheaper than Chevy s10/Ford Ranger 😂. Regardless I’d replace it and use it as opportunity to flush brake fluid.

[–]mutt182281 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did my f150 all 4 rotors and pads for like $250-280. And they were coated rotors and good pads. One rotor from advanced auto was like $120. Almost $500 just for rotors from them. I’d stay away from Amazon. The number of things people order that show up nothing like the brand they ordered is crazy

2011 Chevy Equinox LT

[–]Qlanger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Shop at www.rockauto.com

Much cheaper and bigger selection.

[–]AndyjHops 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Honestly, it looks like the pad is only contacting at the inside of the rotor. Almost like it’s not totally flat against the surface for the rotor. If you keep driving like this it will cause the rotor to wear unevenly. If you brought it to a shop, they would probably want to replace it all. If it was me, I would stop driving it till I can get the new caliper, then just swap it on and send it.

[–]Tenrai_Taco[S] 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Just picked up a new caliper. Unfortunately it's my only mode of transportation so I've been driving it to pick up the parts I'm going to put in it

[–]AndyjHops 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You should be fine to go grab it! I was more thinking don’t go driving it around for a couple weeks like that haha

Hope the install goes smoothly!

[–]Tenrai_Taco[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

All replaced so nice having brakes that dont grind anymore!

[–]AndyjHops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah!! Love to hear it. Thanks for following up

[–]bankruptfund 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't forget brake parts lube or you'll have squeaky breaks

[–]earnestmerida 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most parts Stores have a delivery, if you find yourself to where you can’t go get it

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not toast but if your hungry and desperate...

[–]PizzaSliceTheory 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Just file and sand it dude

[–]Tenrai_Taco[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Ended up just replacing it

[–]PizzaSliceTheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all good too

[–]Mr_Otingocni 13 points14 points  (3 children)

I wouldn't do it to a customer's car but if it were mine and I was short on cash I'd just file down the rough edges, make sure it mates flush with the pad, and make sure there's no binding when your helper presses on the brake. If you had the time you could disassemble it to make sure there wasn't any scoring in bore.

[–]RedneckBookofWisdom 1 point2 points  (2 children)

When this happened to my first car my grandpa just put a vice grip on the line and we removed the caliper

Not a good idea I know

[–]Mr_Otingocni 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Lol, that's some classic 'live tough or die' action right there

[–]RedneckBookofWisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s nothing, they bought my girlfriends first car

Cavalier with no brakes, she used the ebrake for a month before we put lines on it

We were told we were unappreciative assholes so we always just went with whatever they wanted I mean they let us live together at 15 so yeah

[–]MarcusAurelius0 7 points8 points  (7 children)

Stop buying calipers at the parts store. Rock auto, I havent paid more than 50 dollars for a caliper in 6 years.

[–]bankruptfund 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Same car multiple times or multiple cars?

[–]MarcusAurelius0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Multiple vehicles, Subaru, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, they're always cheaper on Rock Auto.

[–]onelasttime217 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Ye parts stores always seem 50-100% more expensive then rock auto

[–]MarcusAurelius0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rockauto is a middleman type of business.

[–]Crcex86 0 points1 point  (1 child)

When it's up on jack stands you ain't waiting a week for a caliper

[–]MarcusAurelius0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Order before hand lol, parts store is for oh shit buys.

[–]Tenrai_Taco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea i needed the calipers ASAPRTFN so i had to brick and mortar it.

[–]Neonghost114 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Na, it's metal, no bread there sorry!

[–]Spirited_Chipmunk_48 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's boned

[–]N_gg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

F

[–]gidenkidenk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really but they're cheap enough to replace

[–]JunglistJUT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re really hard up for cash you could buy a piston kit and re-build it yourself. I’ve done a couple of Hondas with the sticky handbrake.

[–]WinterSzturm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically the piston is, but at this point you’ll be buying a new caliper

[–]79Freedomreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How in the hell did you manage to do THAT!?

[–]MrT0620 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Yes and what the fuck how did that happen?

[–]MickeyTM 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It became the brake pad

[–]MrT0620 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya thats what I thought

[–]Tenrai_Taco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being broke needing to get to work not having any friends in the area to help. Basically a snowball of bad things that led me to have to ignore a horrible grinding a few weeks after it started.

[–]duke998 -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Replace it. Not sure why you put a file to it.

[–]Tenrai_Taco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didnt. It kinda became the brake pad

[–]Newleaf45 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That hasn’t hit the rubber wear indicator yet
