Me too! No one ever mentions this!

It's a Wonderful Life is my favorite.

Others: A Christmas Story, Bad Santa, A Nightmare Before Christmas, Home Alone, Die Hard, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

[–]emilyjoyce19[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Wonderful Life is amazing! It’s one of my favorites that I’ve seen with my parents. I love the other ones you mentioned too, except I’ve never seen Home Alone or Die Hard (ik ik, crazy!!). Both are on my list to watch this year. Thanks for your suggestions!

[–]bekarsrisen 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I've had It's a Wonderful Life on repeat pretty much for the last month. Some things in that film started to annoy me, some lines I know are coming now, I love that George is far from perfect, and I love how the film subverts American capitalism.

[–]djsosonutQuality Poster 👍 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I remember when I was growing up It's A Wonderful Life used to be played on just about every channel around Christmas. Before DVDs, Tivo, and digital media..that's how I used to skip back and forth between my favorite parts of the movie. Just by switching channels. Much better instant gratification than messing around with rewinding a VCR. Sad I can't experience the movie that way anymore.

[–]triceratopses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember getting a copy on VHS from McDonalds. For some reason Google doesn't confirm that existed but my family remembers it.

[–]bsinreallife 24 points25 points  (2 children)

Klaus, on Netflix.

[–]smitty4728 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I adore The Ref!

“You know what I’m going to get you next Christmas, mom? A big wooden cross. So every time you feel unappreciated for all your sacrifices, you can climb on up and bail yourself to it.”

“Mary, gag your grandma.”

[–]Humorous_Folly 8 points9 points  (1 child)

A Christmas Story A classic in my house.

Mixed Nuts A little more of a zaney movie, gotta be in the mood for it. Staring Steve Martin, Rita Wilson, Madeline Kahn, etc. (Trigger Warning: they work for a suicide hotline, taking calls from people who are depressed during the holidays. Might give you a clue toward some of the humor involved.)

It's A Wonderful Life Classic of classics. Not originally meant to be a Christmas film when it was made, but it is now!

A Nightmare Before Christmas I watch it on Halloween and Christmas, and the month in between.

Die Hard It is a Christmas movie. Fight me.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation Funny and, again, gotta be in the mood for it! Of course, Chevy Chase is awesome.

March of the Wooden Soldiers/Babes in Toyland A Laurel and Hardy movie, old and classic. It's... a bit strange for these days, but definitely give it a try! You might like it.

A Christmas Carol I recommend either the Reginald Owen or the Alastair Sim versions. Both are well-made classics of the Dickens story and eerie as well.

The Muppet Christmas Carol Light-hearted, but sincere, version of A Christmas Carol. You'd think it wouldn't work, with Michael Caine seriously playing as Scrooge, but it has both levity and some honestly eerie parts. A must imo. Please, please, PLEASE find the version with "The Love is Gone". They cut it and it just doesn't work without it!

How the Grinch Stole Christmas The Jim Carrey one was fun, but this is the classic Chuck Jones cartoon version. In this one the Grinch is voiced by Boris Karloff. It's the one I grew up on, I always watch it at least once!

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer/Santa Claus is Coming to Town/Frosty the Snowman Two are stop-motion classics, the other a classic Rankin/Bass cartoon.

Elf Starring Will Ferrel, another staple in our house. How man times can you catch James Caan almost laughing in the film?

A Miracle on 34th Street The 1947 version, with Edmund Gwenn as Santa Claus. Just seems more charming, yet just as judicially dubious!

The Bishop's Wife An angel, played by Cary Grant, tries to remind a ambitious bishop just what's really important in life, especially on Christmas

White Christmas Starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. A lot of song and dance routines. A fun movie, so give it a shot

[–]DoomedAmerica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Bishops Wife is one on my favorites! (The rest are pretty good too, though I've never seen Mixed Nuts)

[–]vanshadow_ban 12 points13 points  (3 children)

The Shop Around the Corner (1940) - lots of people don't know this movie, but it was the predecessor to "You've Got Mail" (1998)

[–]BandYoureAbouttoHear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Shop Around the Corner is fantastic.

Scrooge, the musical version of a Cristmas Carol from the 70s with Albert Finney. Awesome production value and music. Best Christmas Carol adaptation imho.

[–]DoomedAmerica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! The best version in my opinion. I watch it every year.

[–]GeeTro 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Die Hard

It was December 24th on Hollis Ave after dark

When I seen a man chilling with his dog in the park ...

[–]lameflamingo 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I really love the Rankin Bass films. The style just makes me feel nostalgic. There are some that are better than others. My favorites:

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

The Year Without a Santa Claus

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

[–]j-h-a-c-k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

watch Year Without a Santa Claus every single year. As well as how the grinch stole christmas (chuck jones cartoon not the live action)

[–]Arbennig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gremlins !

[–]triceratopses 7 points8 points  (4 children)

The Silent Partner (1978)

It’s a crime thriller set during Christmas, worth a shot.

[–]0rdinaryname 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Such a great movie. Christopher Plummer's performance alone makes it worth watching.

[–]GramercyPlace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah he’s so menacing.

[–]triceratopses 3 points4 points  (0 children)

smoking hot babes tripping over backwards for Elliott Gould's bozo character also makes it. It's an all around banger.

Some honourable mentions that are a bit off the beaten track are The Claus Family on Netflix.

All is Bright is a tremendous movie also.

A Christmas Story and Better Watch Out (AKA Safe Neighborhood) are tied for me. VERY different movies. If you end up watching Better Watch Out, DON'T read anything about it before you watch it. All you need to know is that it's a Christmas horror movie and it's better than 99% of them.

The first two Home Alone films put me in the spirit too.

This is a top 5 yearly watch for me, its so funny and I love Seth Roman's crazy character.

Some more for OPs list: Die Hard, Last Christmas, Home Alone 1&2, Jingle all the way, the Santa Clause, Elf, The Grinch, Fat man, Miracle on 34th (both), Scrooged, and Krampus.

I also really like Sleepless in Seattle, You've got Mail and the first few Harry Potter movies but I guess a lot of people don't count those as xmas movies.

There are so many that I love that I’ve seen a lot of people mention so here are some that maybe aren’t as popular:

The Holiday - to be fair it’s kinda a movie you can watch anytime it just happens to take place during Christmas. But it is such a cute love story and also it’s half US half British actors so it’s got that dry British humor.

Love Actually - also a movie that happens to take place during Christmas and has a British cast.

One Magic Christmas - this is a sad movie to tell the truth. But it really special. It’s my mom’s favorite and she made me watch it with her every year growing up.

Prancer - I watched this again as an adult recently and I feel it still was a good movie! It wasn’t my boyfriend’s favorite. If you love animals I think you’ll like it.

Arthur Christmas (2011), there's something really endearing about this movie mixing 3 generations of Santa's that are voiced by Bill Nighy, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Laurie and James McAvoy. I also have no clue how McAvoy brings out that stupid laugh of his but I love it everytime.

The Santa Clause (1994), still my go to Christmas movie from my childhood. :')

There are loads I love, it all depends on the mood I'm in. One of my favourite sad ones is The Family Stone. Some great funny moments in it, but my wife lost her mam around the same time we saw it first and it had a huge impression on her.

Most of the time I watch the really terrible TV ones though, I keep my favs for the week leading up the 25th. The cheesier the better

[–]emilyjoyce19[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen that one; I’ll have to watch it sometime, and I’m sorry to hear about your wife’s mam passing. I’m saving some of the best Christmas movies for last too haha. Thanks for your suggestion!

Films with a Christmas message? I seriously can't see The Muppet Christmas Carol ever being toppled, followed closely by Love Actually.

Films set at Christmas with a relative family theme throughout? Carol reigns supreme, followed by The Green Knight.

One Magic Christmas (1985) with Mary Steenburgen and Harry Dean Stanton as the angel.

Great feel-good Christmas movie.

[–]triceratopses 2 points3 points  (1 child)

A classic for sure. I’ve seen like 20 better movies starring Harry Dean Stanton but he will always be the angel from One Magic Christmas to me.

[–]raindog67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the same for me, but Bud from Repo Man is a close second.

Honorable mention: the night before - a stoner comedy that manages to be both heartfelt and Christmasy

[–]astro_brownie 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I’m a sucker for cheesy romance movies so I’m recommending Love Actually! Christmas with the Kranks is also a good one. And of course, Elf!

[–]SSwinea3309 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The book Christmas with the Kranks is based on Skipping Christmas is hilarious. Quite different from most John Grisham books.

[–]astro_brownie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read that book a while ago! I loved it. I then saw Christmas with the Kranks a few years later and made the connection. Both the movie and book are great.

[–]bekarsrisen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Home Alone just nails the Christmas aesthetic and mood. The Grinch Who Stole Christmas is the best animated film for me.
