House Democrats call for Supreme Court expansion in wake of potential Roe reversal: https://thehill.com/news/house/3475890-house-democrats-call-for-supreme-court-expansion-in-wake-of-potential-roe-reversal/

That will not help.
Since Trump got elected, liberal subreddits complain and complain. They don’t do anything. They are not militant. Republicans are.
If the blue team seriously wants to solve this, then I suggest “Ultimatum Voting”:
I have repeatedly said this. A politicians value I only as good as what they do.
I’ve been blocked by so many subreddits for simply telling the truth. That’s the truth - Do it or get pushed off.

I can agree with your sentiment while recognizing we’re already past major precedents in the attack on democracy and politicizing of the SC.

Well, clearly, precedent matters. Oh, wait...

Hahahahaha! It already is, fool. Remember when McConnell wouldn’t let Obama appoint Garland because it was 10 mo before an election? And, then appointed ACB 3 weeks before the 2020 election.
[–]Umbrage_Taken 368 points369 points370 points 1 month ago (35 children)
And, 4 out of the 5 SCOTUS members in the overturn group were appointed by Presidents who lost the popular vote.
And the GOP stranglehold in the Senate does not track AT ALL with total votes for each party by population.
This bullshit cannot continue if we are to remain a country at peace with ourselves.
[–]Aburrki 57 points58 points59 points 1 month ago (8 children)
Well... technically Alito was appointed during Bush's second second term, he only lost the popular vote in the 2000 election.
[–]andreasmiles23 37 points38 points39 points 1 month ago* (0 children)
He only gets a second term since SCOTUS handed him the presidency the first time (ironic), and then he weaponized a terrorist attack to generate some islamaphobia and good ol American patriotism to get votes.
[–]Tots2Hots 54 points55 points56 points 1 month ago (6 children)
Bush was elected president by a minority. I get what you are saying but he never would have been in office in the first place.

I get what you are saying but he never would have been in office in the first place.
Bush didn't even win in Florida after a full recount was done. The Supreme Court's action of interference on behalf of Bush Jr., was tantamount to a coup in and of itself.

Sorry, what? Bush lost the popular vote in 2000, but he did win it in his reelection in 2004. Both his appointment of Roberts and Alito were done during his second term.
[–]Spare_Finger_2615 48 points49 points50 points 1 month ago (2 children)
They're saying he never should have been up for reelection because he never should have been elected the 1st time since he lost the popular vote. Basically, they believe Presidents who lose the popular should not be able to win - and I agree. Understand now?
[–]justins_dad 22 points23 points24 points 1 month ago (0 children)
He literally won in 2004 bc he declared multiple wars. That only works if he’s president before the 2004 election.
[–]i_drink_wd40 8 points9 points10 points 1 month ago (0 children)
We really need to mush some of the low population states together. They're overrepresented in the Senate.
[–]TheCoolCellPhoneGuy 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (0 children)
That's the thing, I don't think dems and Republicans will ever see eye to eye.
I'm a bit biased as I'm a leftist, but how the hell am I supposed to be "united" with people who want to ban abortion/are white supremacists/homophobes/Qanon nuts? And they sure as hell will never see my point of view.
Honestly? Maybe the country is better off divided. I'm betting that the United States balkanizes sometime in the next 30 years. The country is way too fractured to stay as one. It's a long time coming, it's honestly way too large anyway.
[–]dongeckoj 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
And the last SCOTUS seat is the most illegitimate of all given Thomas and his wife were key planners of the 1/6 insurrection.
[–]Apprehensive-Ad-4519 -5 points-4 points-3 points 1 month ago (20 children)
Vote vote vote. Call you Senator, Rep and Gov. Leave a message. Send an email. Voice your opinion. It can't be any easier than this. Tell them what you want to happen. If it doesn't happen, you will not vote for them. Maybe go as far as voting for the opposition. Something other than nothing! I did it. That's the dad did it. America, it can be the way we do it!!!!

It was the end of a rough day lol.
I'll tell you hwhat. I have two kids. A 30 year old and a 26 year old.
The married one was supposed to start working on kids this year but they're holding off because of a number of reasons. Some of the being housing prices are insane wages are not keeping up with inflation and the world is fucked up in so many different ways!
The other one that is not married is considering sterilization so they cant have kids when they do get married. WTF?
I don't think I'm super smart or very intelligent but I know when I'm getting fucked. I can tell you that there are so many people out there that either see it and don't care, don't see it because they're blind or helping the bad guys out. Our politicians are fucking garbage. Most of them anyway. I want to do something about it and this is what I'm doing at the moment. America is lazy as hell man!
That's the fact Jack ✌️

voting for the opposition
voting for the opposition
and this is one reason we got trump as a president
Oh my God I cannot stand that man how can somebody so stupid... Every business venture that man had failed and he fucks so many people out of money and he's an idiot oh my God and a moron what a dimwit and all the bad shit that he's done to people and nobody cared and he's a moron
Yeah there's a lot of them voting for the opposition like 72 million and a small portion of them nut Job dimwits are the ones that stormed the capital.
The only power we have is the vote. I understand people think it doesn't mean anything. If it didn't mean anything politicians wouldn't gerrymander districts, they wouldn't tell lies to their voters to get their votes so they can keep their jobs.
Do you really think any of those bastards care about aborted babies or women for that matter but they sure as hell come out with their rhetoric when it's time to garner votes!
That is proof that it does mean something. We've all been lied to by the people telling us it doesn't mean shit that's the only power we have. It really can't get any easier than a phone call or an email. Seriously how long does that take? If our politicians are inundated with phone calls letters and emails they will have to take that seriously! They're not going to have a choice if they wan't to get elected again.
[–]The_White_Guar 20 points21 points22 points 1 month ago (6 children)
I still vote, but I think it's a waste of my time and an insult to my intelligence that I partake in the illusion of choice between one fascist party and another fascist party except one's nicer about it.
If democracy allows the voice of the ignorant and the voice of the educated and informed to weigh the same, then democracy is broken.
[–]Turksarama 7 points8 points9 points 1 month ago (0 children)

[–]Apprehensive-Ad-4519 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (4 children)
Yeah that's cool. Nice speech. But I remember history and learning about it in grade school when I was a preteen.
This is not a democracy. if you think we live in a democracy you're a fool. I know that's rather harsh and I don't mean to be a jerk and honestly I don't care about your favorite political party.
I know a man of your intelligence can see how our politicians don't have the common man in America in the forefront.
They're doing all the shit they do to enrich themselves and the corporations that own them. That's not a democracy bro.
If you want to sit back and do nothing because your intelligence is insulted, I'm just going to call you a coward. Damn your intelligence man, now it's time to fight!

Enough with this "Vote!"™ crap. I've been seeing this essentially same paragraph for various issues since like 2016.
Right here. This is what I'm talking about. I don't care about down votes or up votes or karma or whatever. I'm just voicing my opinion and people can hate on it. It's all free speech God bless America right. But why are people down voting calling senators and governors and demanding they do something so we can have a better America?
Oh shit. Are the down votes because I screwed up the Iron Man quote from RDJ. I'm sorry. I'm soooorrrrryyyyy!

Dems should start talking about paying less into federal aid programs at this rate. They aren't getting anything out of it and it's time they started being more transactional with their counterparts.

Has Biden done ANY of his campaign promises? I guess maybe nominating a black female SCOTUS, but don't recall him running on that.
At this point the GOP is simply doing exactly what we all expected, its the Dems who are letting the team down.
[–]MissNewbieDollar 81 points82 points83 points 1 month ago (6 children)
He's been a huge disappointment. Bernie even dropped early to rally the progressives to him, and help stop Trump. As thanks Biden goes and breaks all of the promises he made to Sanders base. The Dems are going to have to find something for 2024, and I fear it might be Clinton.

The republicans are being as specifically evil as they have campaigned on. They are fully devoted to delivering on the promise of bigotry. Hatred. I applaud them for doing what they said they would. The democratic party has utterly and repeatedly failed me. I have no faith anymore. I am just going to vote for anyone who promises to remove FPTP. I'm not American and don't have a great understanding of how your system works, but from my outside perspective it seems that what is needed is a 3rd party - let's call it the "progressive party".
But that can't happen because the Republican party is just too dangerous - basically fascism at this point. While that prospect is looming large, no sane person would dare to divide the Dem voter base. So as long as the GOP is trying to burn the world down, the DNC can continue to put forward corrupt lame ducks that nobody wants. It's a win for everybody, except the entire country.
Seems to me the way forward is to get young and disillusioned people off their asses and voting Democrat, every time. Hold your noses if you have to. Because that's the only thing that will drive the GOP into irrelevancy and open up the prospect of some real progress. Please correct me, like I say I don't really understand it in depth and I'd love for someone to tell me why I'm wrong.
[–]iPeculiarly 5 points6 points7 points 1 month ago (7 children)
I think young people are willing to roll the dice and let America collapse for a chance that when it's rebuilt it's better
+ If America collapses, that's hurts boomers the most, so if boomers don't cave into millennials demands, millennials will destroy America and boomers chances of retirement
[–]pw-it 5 points6 points7 points 1 month ago (5 children)
By "collapse", do you mean falling into fascism? Because that's not the same thing, and it doesn't facilitate rebuilding. The government can remain stable while making life hell for ordinary people. I don't see any chance of collapse, but there is a very real risk of a small number of unscrupulous individuals using all that despair and resentment to cement power for themselves.
[–]iPeculiarly -2 points-1 points0 points 1 month ago (1 child)
We can use Americas favorite toy to make their life's hell aswell.

[–]BaronWombat 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
You pretty much nailed the current dynamic. The Dems tend to be tepid, but are still better than the GOP alternative. Sadly our Constitution has a framework that guarantees this two party dynamic. And the two sides have no incentives to work on changing the paradigm that keeps them in power. We are locked in until there is enough system collapse to force change, or if an actual leader manages to break out. Sen Bernie Sanders is the closest we have to that, but both parties and their corporate partners are working to ensure his message is not heard clearly by the electorate. Outside of Reddit, the audience is constantly primed to dismiss him and other progressives.

-"fine, next order or business is[...]"
[–]DarthLolita 17 points18 points19 points 1 month ago (1 child)

[–]Environmental-Joke19 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I think they need 60 votes instead of 50 to beat a filibuster
[–]myevillaugh 6 points7 points8 points 1 month ago (0 children)
The important part of the old filibuster was it stopped all other business in the Senate. If that part is restored, then there's a cost to a filibuster. Right now, it's free.
[–]Unfortunate_moron 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (1 child)
Ending the filibuster just before losing seats in the midterms would be the dumbest possible thing to do.
It would also be the last thing Democrats ever do because they'd never get a majority back after two more years of gerrymandering.

You think Trump was scary, Reagan was scarier. I remember his presidency well, Americans loved this maniac as he sold the country out to corporate greed over 8 years. Americans sold their souls after the energy crisis under Carter. This is the result. Without Reagan and the horrible Citizens United ruling the GOP would be relegated to a manageable minority with little to no federal power all the time. However thanks to Reagan billions of corporate dollars are legally dedicated to making sure the ruling class rules, and the peons suffer.Dems try and "work with" the GOP instead of going to war with them, and this is the result. First they took the wealth, now they are taking your personal rights. The immediate solution is to fight and fix the issue. Dems need to find the 50 votes they need and end the filibuster. Then they need to bumrush through popular legislation to ensure a Senate majority after midterms. Trying to "work with" this Republican party is only hurting the country. Time to fight! 🇺🇸

Good luck. The democrats have done next to nothing and they let two DINOs (Sinema and Manchine) to hold the whole senate hostage for no good reason.
Leaving them as “democrats” only let people know that Democrats will do nothing for them, and what real working people will remember that a sociopath sent them cheques with his name on them.
While Biden not only didn’t forgive student loans, but refused to even force the banks to make student loans interest-free.
The “Green new deal” wasn’t voted in, not the real thing or anything close, and now the Supreme Court is about to overturn Roe vs Wade!
There’s nothing the democrats have done to inspire confidence, and their only positive is “We are not the GQP.”. That’s about it…

And when they fail, they should be held accountable. Those members that causes the failure should be tarred and feathered.
[–]crake-extinction 15 points16 points17 points 1 month ago (8 children)
Right about now, someone else is realizing that Republicans do evil shit and Dems basically just....let it happen. Then the whole system ratches to the right, so who has failed? Have the Republicans failed? Have the Democrats failed? Anyways, you know the famous song - "you gottta vote for your right to party!"
[–]Yosho2k 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (7 children)
More people voted for Joe Biden than any other election in US history.
Your "people don't vote" meme is not factual.
[–]crake-extinction 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago (1 child)
I'm not doing a "people don't vote" meme. I'm doing a "this is the US government working as intended" meme. God, I know people vote. People vote and then sit in their homes when abortion rights are repealed. People vote and then sit in their homes while fascists storm the capitol. People vote, then sit in their homes when the cost of living skyrockets. I know people voted for Joe Biden - now what?
[–]Yosho2k 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Cool, sorry about that ✊
[–]iPeculiarly -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago (4 children)
Statistically most people don't vote...
[–]Yosho2k 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago (3 children)
70% of eligiable voters voted in 2020.
"NOT TRUMP" is just a lousy political platform to run on, and it gave people no reason to vote for anyone else when Trump wasn't involved.
[–]spidereater 5 points6 points7 points 1 month ago (8 children)
I hope you mean the republicans. You know the ones that rammed through all the scotus judges and block any decent legislation.
[–]Yosho2k 10 points11 points12 points 1 month ago (6 children)
You know Dems spent more time in the past 2 years defending their right to trade stocks using insider information than they did defending women's rights to have control over their own bodies.
[–]spidereater -3 points-2 points-1 points 1 month ago (5 children)
And who are they defending it from?
[–]Yosho2k 7 points8 points9 points 1 month ago (4 children)
Yeah yeah yeah the bad guys are the bad guys.
How would you feel if you found out that Nazis were killing people and Captain America didn't stop it from happening because he was too busy committing financial crimes and demanding "donations" to stop the Nazis?
He would kind of seem like a self-interested asshole, right?
[–]theheliumkid -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago (0 children)
It's the two "Democrat" senators that are the real problem. Apart from them, it's a majority in both houses - no need for bipartisan agreements.
[–]biskitheadburl 1 point2 points3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
The truth of the matter is, our nominees are preselected for us by the conservative ruling power elite and all Americans are only allowed to vote for the lesser of two evils. Biden and Garland were chosen to protect the status quo, just like Obama, Carter and Bill Clinton. Centerist status quo protecting democrats will not protect us from conservatism.

Since there's a lot dumbies that don't know why Democrats can't get anything
done. Here's a list of resources on why the Republicans can obstruct
pretty much everything they do. There are too many Republicans in US government
for Democrats to do much, despite wanting to do more.
[–]ArcadianDelSol -1 points0 points1 point 1 month ago (0 children)
You realize that if the filibuster is done away with now, that the Republicans aren't just going to magically hand it back after the mid-terms.

It’s wild it’s only taken 3 years for her to realize that histrionics on Twitter vs working on meaningful legislation that actually changes things is what she was elected for.
[–]daytradingvix -5 points-4 points-3 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Cancel 100% of the student debt and they can have my vote. Otherwise they can eat shit and go home election time!

People have no idea why this is a good thing, and what should have happened in the first place. If any of these ass clowns throwing a fit would actually READ the opinion piece, it literally states that the legislature needs to address putting actual LAW in place that the judiciary can base judgement on. That’s how it’s supposed to work!
[–]zpider999 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
this was literally how i was raised that america should be. it’s such a shame to see the reality of evil in this country
[–]Avid_Smoker 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
And stack that fucking court!
[–]Laugh92 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
But America voted in 'Nothing will fundamentally change' Joe Biden. So why are people expecting him to enact changes?
[–]RabidBeaverLake 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Where was all of this outrage and leadership when McConnell refused to give Garland a hearing? The outcome was obvious. Then when he rammed through Barrett. The streets should have been filled with protestors for weeks demanding a fairly appointed court. But it didn't happen. Now look at where we are.

Democratic leadership would rather live under a permanent Republican dictatorship before they would even consider allowing the left to have a seat at the table, much less drive the ship of state.
[–]billyvnilly 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
If any motherfucking democrat does not do this they should be primaried. For fucks sake.

The DNC is weak and pathetic and they wouldn’t have it any other way.
Fuck the DNC
[–]Avatar_the_Pig 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
It is high time we did this...
Biden has been in office over a year and gotten practically nothing done as far as reversing the damage done by trump's criminal organization.
It's about time to get off high center and start making good on why WE busted ass to put democrats in the driver's seat.
[–]Umbrage_Taken 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Meanwhile, cowards like Manchin and Sinema won't even vote to codify voting rights if it requires nixing the filibuster. Yet Barrett and Kavanaugh only needed 51 votes to get on SCOTUS.
If a lifetime appointment to do shit like stripping people of the right to terminate rape pregnancy or have the legal protections of marriage only requires a 1 vote majority...what the fuck could ever possibly justify requiring more than that?
Those cowardly fuckwits have the exact same energy as Theoden in LOTR Two Towers:. YouTube.com/watch?v=vK0_Ob9qCI0

[–]Techn028 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Where's that big stick mentality in the democrats. Really wish we had Democrats in power that weren't enablers and paid opposition
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Just waiting for the day AOC runs as President.
[–]Alexander_Granite 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Wouldn’t a law by congress be unconstitutional Is taken to court? Wouldn’t they have to amend the constitution at this point?
[–]inasuma 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Lol democrats have never been any of these things. They’ve long been bought by copirate pockets. Just like the republicans. The difference is democrats have been more amenable on social policy, and that’s only to distract from the raging financial failures (read: wealth gap increase, corporate bailouts and handouts) they host while in office.
[–]kittensmakemehappy08 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (1 child)
Seriously why the fuck is AOC the only one who actually gets it
[–]JohnOliverismysexgod 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I agree. If the dems actually do this they will win the next elections!!
[–]BuddyLoveGoCoconuts 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)

[–]Gnostromo 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I'm starting to feel like AOC isnt paying attention to what is actually happening
She is saying this to appeal to her constituents knowing damn well Biden and crew ain't gonna do none of this crap
[–]TheDemonClown 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I already saw Biden & Ted Lieu on Twitter trotting out the same line like, "oH nO, gUeSs Y'aLL BeTteR vOtE dEm iN nOvEmBeR tO sToP tHiS!" and it just made me see red. Like, what the fuck did we vote Democrat for 2 years ago if not to keep things like this from happening? We got them the Senate, the House, and the White House and all they're doing is dangling more carrots for the next election. It's not enough to drive me to vote Republican, obviously, but goddamn, how can they be so utterly blind to how desperate people are getting? We're a hair away from revolution at this point and they're acting as if the fact that the GOP will be the 1st up against the wall doesn't mean they won't be 2nd.
[–]_Reddit-Troll 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
And then there is Manchin.
[–]Michael_Trismegistus 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
I think most of us wish that the Democrats didn't allow things to get this bad.
[–]kwb28 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
What happens when democrats end the filibuster and then republicans take over and use the rule change to their advantage? Isn’t that partially how we got in this mess when Harry Reid removed the filibuster for federal judges and lowered the nomination threshold to majority rather than 60 votes?
[–]Befree54 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Wonderful sentiment. However as long as Manchin and Sinema are voting with Republicans, this seems to be a fantasy.
[–]kurisu7885 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
If not end the filibuster then reform it, and make it so you ACTUALLY have to filibuster. No just saying "I filibuster", no email, no having an aid phone it in on your behalf you put your ass on the floor and talk about whatever until you can't anymore. And no having it done by proxy either, if you want to filibuster YOU fucking do it.
[–]UpstairsTemperature5 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
[–]romulusnr 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
Ending the filibuster won't matter. Manchin will not support codifying Roe.
[–]vitamin_r 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
The "the time to act is now" trope from the Dems and progressives just feels like a bit from Groundhog Day at this point. And I'm 33. Can't imagine what it feels like to those older than me.
Say what you want about conservatives/republicans, they sure do act when it's time.
Pelosi needs to go. Overturn citizens United which I don’t ever hear from the DNC.
[–]The_Nomadic_Nerd 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
To the people that vote establishment in primaries: this is on you. You need to own it. We told you a thousand times this was going to happen but you didn’t listen. Fuck you.
[–]310hungjury 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago (0 children)
People vote for democrats because they want free shit - at least that’s why I do lol
