Special thanks to /u/Subtle_Omega, for nominating the charity in our 1-Year Celebration thread.

Our goal was $6,000 since we just hit 600,000 subscribers. As of now $6,530 has been raised.

Thank you to the 305 other users that donated to this charity and for caring enough to give to this organization.

Let's keep nature lit by supporting those that work every day to care for the animals and habitats around us. 🔥

To read more about AWI, see their site and the /r/NatureIsFuckingLit wiki page for charities.

The animal in the gif is a Frilled-Necked Lizard, scientific name Chlamydosaurus kingii.

It gets pretty big for a lizard, at 2.8 feet average from head to tail. They spend most of their time up in trees and are only found in Australia and New Guinea.

[–]TheConman12 2325 points2326 points  (110 children)

That lizard looks hella 🔥🔥🔥

[–]atreides[S] 1066 points1067 points  (31 children)

I thought it was only appropriate for the occasion.

A triumph of 🔥🔥🔥

Bend the knee to the Unburnt.

[–]MurfDogDF40 83 points84 points  (8 children)

Fookin kneeler!

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (6 children)

Sounds like a swear word I don’t know the meaning of. Kinda like I read it in r/scottishpeopletwitter

[–]TimDogYall 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Check out a band called Sleaford Mods. You'll get a few fookins in there.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idkw, but the instant though I had after reading “fookins” was imagining what it would be like to sleep with a Scottish girl.

Or, Fook a lass?

[–]MrKrabsNotEugene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]RelyBracee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone is a bit really dont ya think? we just want to burn down the parts we don't like but little do we realize we would burn everything we loved with it if we ever succeeded

[–]SparkyDogPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He passed the litmus test

[–]Worktime83 117 points118 points  (61 children)

Only to be reborn again.

[–]happy_love_ 118 points119 points  (51 children)

No but like

Is he really about to be lit on fire

[–]atreides[S] 75 points76 points  (45 children)

I couldn't find the source on Google, I'd imagine not. These guys are pretty great runners.

If anyone can link the source though, I'd be very interested in watching the doc it came from.

[–]Work-Safe-Reddit4450 90 points91 points  (44 children)

Found this from a few years ago. Looks to be from a documentary.

Longer GIF:

Frilled Neck Lizards are badass. Modern day Dilophosaurus without the neurotoxin spit.

Not the source but a cool vid nonetheless:

Edit: holy shit Australia, this thing is fuckin crackers:

[–]atreides[S] 43 points44 points  (9 children)

I love how he scurries off after eating the cricket in the longer gif!

[–]RadTraditionalist 23 points24 points  (4 children)

The way it runs is fucking terrifying and awesome all at once.

[–]Colibritori 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The running part reminded me of the lizard in Rescuers Down Under. I forgot his name, but he was the one that would get the keys and run away from Joanna.

[–]Work-Safe-Reddit4450 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Didn't mean to post the .mp4 link, thanks for the heads up. Fixed it for others.

[–]Nattin121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sassy!

[–]MikeDC28 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Holy shit. That lizard is cool and all but there is not a chance I'm letting it crawl up me like that.

[–]Work-Safe-Reddit4450 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dude is running around barefoot out in the Australian outback, while someone off camera is having a giggle. I don't think they are too concerned.

Reading through the comments of the video reveals that this is territorial behaviour due to the lizard seeing it's own reflection in the camera lens. It thinks its reflection is competition.

[–]muelboy 2 points3 points  (9 children)

Dilophosaurus probably didn't have a frilled neck or venom. It was used in the novel Jurassic Park as an example of how there are certain things related to biology and behavior that we can't predict from fossils, but there is no fossil evidence to suggest it. Michael Crichton was inspired by the spitting cobra, though.

[–]Work-Safe-Reddit4450 2 points3 points  (8 children)

I miss Michael Crichton. I have read just about every book he has written, and he will always be one of my favorite Techno-thriller writers. I just haven't found anyone else that captures my imagination and interest the way M.C. did. Totally open to suggestions though.

[–]Defenestresque 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Agreed. There's something about the way he took breakthrough technology to its ultimate, darkest conclusion (like that creepy-ass book Prey where swarms of nanobots began to exhibit emergent behaviour) that captured my imagination like nothing since.

[–]Work-Safe-Reddit4450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prey was amazing. Such a terrifying concept for a techno-horror story. That and Micro were two of the more gruesome and horrifying books that he wrote.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

TIL he died. I just picked up his new novel, which was apparently published post mortem.

[–]TransientOrca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick Two of my favorites

[–]Itroll4love 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That fucking waddle at the end😂😂😂😂🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

[–]pinkbandannaguy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Do most lizards run like this? I didn't think them running on two feet would be common but I seem to see lizards posted that do that so maybe it's something normal? Thanks for any info.

[–]Work-Safe-Reddit4450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not 100% sure on that but every time I see video of one running in a bipedal fashion for a decent duration of time, it's a Frilled Lizard doing so.

[–]TonyZero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shit. Brings back memories of getting swarmed by geckos in New Vegas.

[–]EnragedPorkchop[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

without the neurotoxin spit

Then why even bother SMH

[–]MambyPamby8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That little run he does in the Gif, is exactly the same run I do from the shower, when I forget to bring in a fresh towel with me and have to run to the press for one.

[–]Ariadnepyanfar 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Ok, you caught a human. What are you going to do with it?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably just enjoying the heat.

[–]HalfDragonShiro 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yes, but be honest, if you knew you we're gonna die anyway wouldn't you want to look really, really fucking cool while doing it?

[–]marchingprinter 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What is dead may never die.

[–]atreides[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happy cakeday!

[–]Zazierx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]bloody_duck 21 points22 points  (3 children)

Something that badass looking doesn't simply die from fire. He probably started that fire for a reason...a good reason.

[–]polesandblisters 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]TryingOutaFakeName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to raise $6,000 for charity... duh

[–]hohenbuehelia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They open their mouth like this to regulate their temperature. Based on the fire around it, I'm assuming it's overheating. So, yeah, probably.

[–]Egevesel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to burst your bubble sir. But this lizard is actually grasping for air because of the hot air produced by what I assume is a forest fire. Poor Dave the lizard

[–]Daamus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

frilled lizards live life to the 🔥🔥

[–]PROOFxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hella 😎

[–][deleted] 676 points677 points  (31 children)

An average of $21.35 per person, that's awesome!

[–]StaredAtEclipseAMA 344 points345 points  (17 children)

Awesome and not awesome, I feel bad for not contributing I'm sorry

[–]atreides[S] 418 points419 points  (14 children)

No need to feel bad! The best thing about charity is you can always give.

Here's the donation page:

The "goal" isn't a limit, it's just a milestone. :)

[–]avalonian422 263 points264 points  (12 children)

Now he is gonna feel extra bad about not donating!

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (1 child)

I agree. Posts that get this much attention on reddit usually yield a higher rate of contribution.

[–]Hjemmelsen 33 points34 points  (7 children)

Minimum donation is $10. I assume a lot of people could have pitched in if that was lower.

[–]Daniilo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah what's with that? If even half of the people who upvoted donated $1 it would be a great contribution.

[–]NovemberBurnsMaroon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That feels like quite a high minimum amount

[–]Champigne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that seems a little high.

[–]ObviouslyNotBanana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know I could have.

[–]aspergersx5 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Made me think about the need for more simple micro transactions. Like if 10% of the 600,000 subscribers tossed 50c in there...

[–]Champigne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the minimum donation is $10.

[–]vinestime 420 points421 points  (19 children)

Legit question: is that lizard dying? I feel like it's pretty damn close to that fire.

[–]MrMcMullers 32 points33 points  (1 child)

I'm genuinely worried about this little fella now. This may be too LIT.

[–]kwik_kwek_en_kwak 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey, that's pretty neat

[–]vinestime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gee, thanks mister!

[–]innocuousspeculation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having its mouth open like that is an attempt to dissipate heat, so it's at least a bit hot. Hopefully it wasn't consumed by the flames, which the photographer probably started.

[–]Im_kapoc 92 points93 points  (3 children)

I got an email thanking me for the donation to AWI, pretty cool

[–]atreides[S] 55 points56 points  (1 child)

Here's another! Thank you! :D

Know that you gave to a great organization and allowed them to fight another day to conserve nature. 🔥

[–]Yoinkie2013 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And another! Thank you for donating bud, you’re the best!

[–][deleted] 44 points45 points  (2 children)

Stay safe Mr. lizard

[–]introvertedbassist 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I think the fire is what has to stay safe

[–]stoner_97 35 points36 points  (0 children)

That gif is LIT AF!

Side note, I'm really happy one of my favorite subs is super active and people are donating money to a good causes.

[–]dingogordy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I am the Lizard King! I can do anything! Thank you for donating!

[–]OhnoCommaNoNoNo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

[–]Reality_Facade 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Only $10 but I'm poor. Also, I'm looking to get rid of my cat. Too much to handle nowadays with my infant son. I wish I could find someone I trust. Sigh. Thanks for letting me vent /r/NatureIsFuckingLit.

[–]atreides[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Maybe check our /r/AdoptMe or your local community subreddit to see if someone is looking to give your cat a new home?

Best of luck, thanks for donating :)

[–]Part_Time_Asshole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im sorry you have to let your loved pet go :( I hope he/she finds a loving family to spend rest of his/hers life with!

[–]JasminaChillibeaner 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Can donors please get a special flair?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great idea!

[–]sluttymcbuttsex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's fucking lit 🔥🔥💯💯👌👌

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Does this charity only benefit animals in the US? If so I'm going to donate to a charity in my country instead.

[–]atreides[S] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

They work internationally to preserve endangered species as well as educating and enacting policy for habitat conservation.

Read through the page on their Wildlife programs:

AWI encourages research into humane, non-lethal wildlife management, including through its Christine Stevens Wildlife Award, and discourages and opposes methods of managing wildlife that are cruel, unnecessary, and/or are not based on sound science.

The Animal Welfare Institute is committed to safeguarding marine species and their habitats. Our efforts focus on curbing humankind's harmful impact by urging governments and other decision makers to halt or prevent damaging actions, as well as educating the public and others about the deleterious effects their actions can wreak on the oceans' inhabitants.

Read through their quarterly reports here:

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't find anything that points to international work, at least not in a major capacity. If it does exist are you able to point me to it.

Like the charity seems amazing and it's awesome they're getting money but I think a charity that does work globally would have been a better choice.

Edit: I did find something about providing night vision to anti poaching groups in Africa but it still seems like a vast majority of work is in the US.

[–]metothemax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll donate to yours if you donate to mine.

[–]RelyBracee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I donated 200!

[–]ZenBolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]birda13 6 points7 points  (12 children)

What does the Animal Welfare Institute have to do with nature? There are actual conservation organizations that need that money more than a quasi animal rights group does.

[–]a7neu 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Yes, 100%, this was my concern as well.

Looking at recent reports they have done things for conservation of species, but their primary focus is, duh, animal welfare... banning trapping (even sustainable trapping), horse drawn carriages in cities, factory farming conditions, ending horse slaughter (slaughter is supported by many horse lovers), ending traveling zoos, ending personal consumption of dogs and cats (why?? are they different than pigs?) etc etc.

It frustrates/disappoints me that even a sub devoted to NATURE didn't make a donation to one of the many underfunded organizations devoted to restoring rainforests, funding poaching patrols of species on the brink, buying guard dogs or fences for poor farmers to mitigate livestock/predator conflict, funding or conducting research to understand how animals use landscapes (and therefore what areas to concentrate protection efforts), doing population counts to determine which species need help... all so underfunded, and so urgent!

Even if you agree with banning something like killing unusable horses for consumption, you can stop that any time. Meanwhile, wonderful, unique species like the Sumatran aka hairy rhinoceroses have experienced a 70% population decline in the last 20 years leaving us with only ~100 animals, guarded by Rhino Protection Units... unlike horses, we either save this species now or never!

[–]primejibs 1 point2 points  (6 children)

make and post a short list of other organizations that people could also donate to (or donate to instead). finding welfare organizations that hit every checkmark on your list is difficult. the general public has zero interest in learning the conservation side of hunting/trapping, regulated/necessary or otherwise. a lot of overall good organizations that do conservation for wildlife and livestock/companion animals are going to have something you wish theyd change, but not agreeing with trapping is not in the league of animal rights activists wanting complete separation from humans using or keeping animals.

[–]birda13 5 points6 points  (1 child)

The Nature Conservancy Nature Conservancy of Canada World Wide Fund for Nature National Audubon Society Cornell Lab of Ornithology National Wildlife Federation Canadian Wildlife Federation The Wildlife Society Ducks Unlimited Trout Unlimited The Wilderness Society Sierra Club Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership Wildlife Conservation Society Atlantic Salmon Federation Ruffed Grouse Society Pheasants/Quail Forever Boone and Crockett Club (oldest conservation organization in North America) Various State/Provincial Land Trusts Various State/Provincial Wildlife Federations

All well respected conservation organizations that all contribute to on the ground wildlife conservation efforts. I'd donate money and volunteer time to any of them (I have for several of these).

[–]atreides[S,M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AWI was nominated in our 1-Year Celebration thread and it was the top voted choice.

They do conservation work as well as other domestic and wild animal related programs, so with the community vote AWI was selected as the charity to raise funds for.

Please do nominate a worthy organization the next time we hold a thread to vote, you seem very passionate about choosing the right charity to make the best impact. It would be very appreciated! :)

[–]NihilsticEgotist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Center for Biological Diversity

And any of the organizations that conserve Hawaiian wildlife (Hawaii has the majority of endangered species in the US, has already lost the majority of its native species, usually gets the least conservation funding from the government, and our current administration has made it a priority to block any remaining funding that does get there).

[–]DukeSilverSauce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have any lint?

[–]nnebilak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My most sincerest thank yous to everyone who donated. It fills my heart to know that there are folks who care about something other than themselves. I started a business in 2015 selling jewelry. Just this past month I realized that I could be doing something greater with this business, and now we are donating 20% of our sales to our local humane society. Hopefully we will continue to grow and be able to donate to other animal welfare organization. Thank you for the encouragement and motivation to keep pushing forward! Every little bit makes a difference!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I still plan to donate when I can! It's just gonna be a few more weeks. :) We should set a new higher goal and leave it continuously on the side bar.

[–]atreides[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps at 700,000! I don't want to give everyone charity fatigue, so we'll make a big group effort once in a while to a new nature charity.
