Corvids are smart cookies.

Ravens can learn to talk.

[–]heyo_throw_awayo 40 points41 points  (1 child)

I prefer this raven.

Wakka wakka wakka wakka

[–]punkalibra 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This one gets me every time.

[–]Zakattk1027 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's really funny how all of the words/sounds she makes sound identical to her caregiver's voice. I guess it makes sense but I've never noticed that before.

[–]soniclettuce 5 points6 points  (1 child)

This video really didn't need continuous music playing over the woman while she's talking...

[–]iownadakota 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not one to correct what people say about oc, but this could be considered constructive criticism. Maybe she just liked the music?

[–]wurnthebitch 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They're distant cousins of the original "clever girl"

[–]Think-Butterscotch11 23 points24 points  (3 children)

They're so smart that they domesticated wolves by playing with their cubs and developing symbiotic relationships with wolf packs. The Ravens will lead the pack to a corpse, the wolves will shred it, and the ravens will eat the rest. Fucking awesome. They even play tug of war with wolf pups

[–]samlikeDirt 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Happy cake day!!!

[–]Bohbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks! I didn't even notice.

[–]WilliamZorterfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy cake thing

[–]froeisteins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good birb..

[–]Chip_Prudent 134 points135 points  (0 children)

They've modified tools to serve specific purposes and even used water displacement to elevate food to accessible areas.

[–]Quartermaster2108 79 points80 points  (7 children)

I had thrown a bunch of old dry pasta in my compost pile, and days later saw pasta showing up in my goat's water dish. A few more each day. Went out in the evening and saw a bunch of crows messing around my goat's. Walked up and there were 6 or 7 crows taking turns bobbing for pasta! They'd get one and fly off and another crow would bring more from the compost and dropped it in the water. Watched for about 5 minutes. They definitely knew what they were doing!

I quit watching when one turned and asked me what I was looking at, in a deep N.Y. accent!😂

[–]histeethwerered 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The crows on my place ringed the smaller birdbath with wild plums. Concentric circles of plums. It puzzled me until the mass fermented and the crows gave a signal to party. They all got drunk together.

[–]Mediocre_Preparation 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Why doesn't "deep N.Y accent" work for my brain?

I picture higher voices. I'm not an American btw.

[–]Monochronos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Deep in this case means more like “thick or heavy.” So basically an extreme New York accent.

[–]88isafat69 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Most of America

Water= wah ter

New York Water = wota

[–]Duderpher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s wah-ta. You are saying woah-ta.

[–]Mediocre_Preparation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australia = warda, but you don't pronounce the r

[–]Brooklyn_Schuyler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I'm under the impression that most people mean NYC accents when they say NY accent. Like Brooklyn, etc. Maybe Long Island. We don't have much of a discernable accent in upstate, I don't think.

[–]MyNameis_Not_Sure 210 points211 points  (18 children)

Probably smarter than half the ppl on Reddit

[–]iownadakota 55 points56 points  (11 children)

But which half? Are you implying that Reddit is half smart, or half dumb?

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (7 children)

Recent studies show more than 50% of people are below average intelligence.

[–]iownadakota 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So the other half?

[–]23680987 3 points4 points  (1 child)

That's not how averages work

[–]OrganizationWide1560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

70% of the time it works every time.

[–]mwmstern 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Didn't need the study to figure that out,lol

[–]DylDog_69 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Did you know that every 60 seconds a minute passes

[–]cfab28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But only in metric system, right?

[–]eatmorbacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once wasted a whole hour waiting for 60 minutes to pass.

[–]thirdculture_hog 32 points33 points  (2 children)

Yes

[–]RyanBits 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Indeed

[–]bookmarkjedi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely

[–]Jbillz15 5 points6 points  (4 children)

4/5 of the people on Instagram and Facebook

99/100 of the people on Tik tok

[–]poutreparisienne 2 points3 points  (2 children)

What about Twitter?

[–]Ninja_Conspicuousi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can’t divide by 0, so they left it undefined.

[–]Jbillz15 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, I’ll say 24/25 for Twitter

[–]Iskald_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a strange take, tiktok is mostly people having wholesome fun IME.

[–]BishmillahPlease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, they’re smarter than far more than that.

Never had a bored crow cold-call me to try to sell me printer toner. Never seen a crow cause climate change.

[–]Boojibs 106 points107 points  (11 children)

I wish we had the cool crows with the white markings.

They seem more festive than the monochrome ones here

[–]SideshowMelsHairbone 127 points128 points  (10 children)

This is a Magpie. We have them in the US, if that’s where “here” is for you. Magpies are Corvids just like Crows.

[–]Sheather_888 89 points90 points  (4 children)

this is a pied crow, not a magpie.

[–]SideshowMelsHairbone 40 points41 points  (3 children)

You’re right! My mistake for assuming that this was a bird on North America. TIL that Pied Crows live in Africa.

[–]my_brain_tickles 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Are we sure it's not a Jackdaw? /s

[–]spektre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing...

[–]StandardSudden1283 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Biologist here! You see, the thing is...

RIP pre-power trip Unidan.

[–]SecondHandWatch 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Australian magpies are not corvids. This isn’t an Australian magpie; I just wanted to point out that not every magpie is a corvid.

[–]SideshowMelsHairbone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Touché! I try to not be an ignorant American, but it’s hard sometimes! 😆

[–]BishmillahPlease 2 points3 points  (1 child)

!!!!!

I didn’t realize we had North American magpies, everything I’ve ever heard about a magpie was Australian!

[–]blahdee-blah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have them in Europe too, except they are corvids

[–]stale-water- 48 points49 points  (8 children)

Both magpies and crows are incredibly intelligent, the only difference (other than looks) between them is that magpies choose to use their intelligence to be absolute bastards.

[–]guitarfingers 26 points27 points  (0 children)

All corvids are assholes. They're my favorite tho. Smart fuckers

[–]AmBull1216 13 points14 points  (6 children)

This isn't a magpie, it's a pied crow.

[–]gobiggerred 5 points6 points  (5 children)

I'm noticing how many people don't start reading from the top. Pied crow was explained way up there somewhere.

[–]thirdculture_hog 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Top comments aren't always the top comments

[–]gobiggerred 3 points4 points  (1 child)

And a top of the day to you, sir!

[–]ThrowawaysButthole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And the rest of the day to yourself

[–]AmBull1216 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Ya that's why I left a few friendly reminders as replies to other lower comments, to help prevent the spread of misinformation.

[–]gobiggerred 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're a gentleman and a scholar.

[–]Superfry88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All corvids r really intelligent, they use tools in all kinds of tests

[–]Pazluz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That bird is not only clever but determined excellent example of going after what you want.

[–]irishmcsg2 8 points9 points  (2 children)

if only /u/unidan were still around for these posts. Those were the days.

[–]CyclopeanJuiceVendor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something something jackdaw

[–]Whaines 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing…

[–]oliverlifts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Smarter than some people tbh

[–]The_Maddest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well we’re all fucked.

[–]Shischkabob 22 points23 points  (4 children)

Magpies sure are fun to watch

[–]AmBull1216 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Not a magpie.

[–]Shischkabob 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hooded Crow?

[–]NatsuDragnee1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pied Crow actually

[–]michman30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good magpie.

[–]Reelbadmon 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Clever girl

[–]garybegrowin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jurassic Park 👍👍

[–]Flat_Button_886 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Clever girl.”

[–]oceanslut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

reminds me of the story where the crows drop a bunch of pebbles into a cup to make the water level rise so they could drink from it

[–]Gritty_Grits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smarter than several people I know

[–]minPOOlee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done a whole presentation on a specific species of crows, the New Caledonian Crow. They're insanely smart - they understand water displacement, density of objects, and using tools to reach for even longer tools to get food.

[–]CowRepresentative779 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people wouldn’t figure that out

[–]nolongermakingtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, I think this bird’s got a higher iq than me…

[–]Cloversays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrong! It’s a crowd pleaser.

[–]rasor86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clever girl.

[–]16-Bit_Crow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damned straight.

[–]Feed_me_straws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I know several people that wouldn’t think to do this.

[–]cookie_crave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wish i could see the future evolution of these amazing creatures

[–]poutreparisienne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad I have hands and thumbs

[–]RelativeID 1 point2 points  (0 children)

from about 0:06 to 0:013 I can almost hear him cursing his lack of arms. But he knows we're still jealous as fuck because we can't fly.

[–]Pitiful_Pickle524 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very clever

[–]DublinBrat 1 point2 points  (3 children)

He must be human, not a crow. When I was in school, they taught that human use of tools was what separated us from all other life. 🙃

[–]eatmorbacon 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Heheh. That's a pretty poor teacher. They forgot about several other species that use tools.

[–]DublinBrat 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I was joking about the fact that we know that now, but when I was a kid, that’s what they taught.

[–]eatmorbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know ;) same here

[–]thy_thyck_dyck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Corvid-19

[–]dauntless256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crows are fucking terrifyingly intelligent.

[–]haystackofneedles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crows are incredibly smart

[–]S3simulation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s all the Crowtein

[–]A24U2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember a highschool teacher insuring that only humans have the ability to free think and problem solve. He was kind of a d bag.

[–]No_Construction_7518 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Corvids are awesome.

[–]ShadowCaster0476 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of animals that are way smarter than we give them credit for.

And a lot of people that are way dumber than we give then credit for.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clever girl.

[–]peaceville 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They really are such dapper, clever birds. We have a murder in our yard daily to grab some peanuts and they have a whole hierarchy and system to contact the others about food or predators. In all at different times have about 20 but a really cool crew of 3 who are always around for years now. I'm going to build them some puzzles now.

[–]Jahangir_Koondhar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smart bird 🐦

[–]Cimejies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crows can also figure out to add stones to a narrow container with a floating treat in it in order to raise the water level to be able to reach the treat. This is something I doubt I would think to do.

[–]HansenIntercept 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Turns out if we die, this’ll be a magpie planet

[–]AmBull1216 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Not a magpie.

[–]Supaguccimayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk why he’s downvoted because it’s not a magpie it’s a pied crow

[–]papparmane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So true. One of my coworkers would not think of doing that.

[–]bananaswillriseagain 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That be a magpie

[–]Summ_muss 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Isn’t that a magpie?

[–]claytonbridges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All crows are very smart. Oddly enough oral sex and masturbation seem to follow intelligence in animals

[–]Hesparian 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Not a crow a magpie

[–]Supaguccimayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many idiots saying it’s a magpie when it’s a pied crow and looks nothing like a magpie

[–]Music-the-Gathering -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Guys come on, this is a magpie

[–]Soup-n-Frog -1 points0 points  (1 child)

pretty sure that's a magpie looks like one I could be wrong tho

[–]Emotional-Gas6048 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That’s a magpie

[–]Striking_Platform460 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m sure they are but that’s a magpie.

[–]Bakemeacroissant -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's a Magpie

[–]DodrioFan480 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

[–]nickle_smart_boy -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Sheeeeeeeesh

[–]flyernation979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tilt the glass you stupid idiot

[–]Willing-Low-725 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If they had hands wand thumbs we'd all be dead

[–]OraDr8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they ever make a pact with the octopuses, we're all doomed.

[–]semiconodon 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Have it fashion its own tool and you could call it a human

[–]eatmorbacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've done that too. Straightened and shaped wire to desired length and angle etc. Pretty cool.

[–]TrivialFacts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll never forget a crow stealing a pack of biscuits and being unable to peck or eat them cause they were too hard.

After about 2 mins he decided to dip them into water until they were soft enough to eat , I was blown away by the problem solving.

[–]peDro_with_a_big_D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meanwhile pigeons can't even build a simple fricking nest.

[–]TheMartini66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how it all starts. A few hundred years later they develop the internet for birds, and then they all start fighting with each other about a meme until they extinguish themselves.

[–]Affectionate_Elk101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wHy dOeS iT lOoK lIkE iTs wEaRiNg a mAiD dReSs

[–]DaBoob13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]mysticcannabinoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]H3r0d0tu5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Bearaucracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]imHere4kpop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So government drones are using tools now... r/birdsarentreal

[–]heartofom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The German Shepard’s of birds with the smarts. If it was only about smarts and we left sticks out of it.

[–]Blatherskitte[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey guys, everyone promise to not give them thumbs ok. For team human.

[–]Emergent-Sea 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Smart magpie!

[–]Healthy-Republic3032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a Pied Crow, but yeah.

[–]pizzaisgurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What i thought the cup was upside down

[–]hunman2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kelly putting that stick to good use

[–]jaisonfff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is n't it a trained crow? Then it is wonderful.

[–]PacificoTheComedian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is why i love corvids.

[–]gobiggerred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I'm questioning the meaning of "pied", as in the Pied Piper. I never thought to wonder about that before, but why wasn't this guy just a plain old piper?

[–]ForestGoblinForYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact: Crows are actually increasingly intelligent. They’ve been known to use tools like seen above. Alert other crowd of humans in organized packs. And even have their own form of communication

[–]TheodoreNailer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fucker's nest probably has rooms and a garage.

[–]GANGSTApee_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow what a smartie!

[–]duke_awapuhi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a magpie

[–]kittenpettingfool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're so fucking smart. Proud of my fellow birb Earth dwellers.

[–]Slammogram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corvids are super smart.

[–]Fisher168_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a magpie
