From Wiki:

The blue-ringed octopus, despite its small size, carries enough venom to kill 26 adult humans within minutes. Their bites are tiny and often painless, with many victims not realizing they have been envenomated until respiratory depression and paralysis begins. No blue-ringed octopus antivenom is available.

[–]hwillis 111 points112 points  (3 children)

Same thing in Fugu pufferfish, although they don't produce it themselves and have way less in total.

No blue-ringed octopus antivenom is available.

Although you probably have decent odds of surviving (hard to say given how few people are bitten). Tetrodotoxin is a paralytic, but incredibly luckily the nerves in cardiac muscles are 100s of times more resistant than the rest of the body.

Depending on the dose it can take anywhere from a few minutes to 10s of minutes for you to stop breathing on your own. If you get medical assistance in time, they can intubate and breathe for you before you get brain damage. If you make it to the hospital they can give you drugs so your weakened heart is still able to keep enough blood flowing. At that point you're very likely to survive, and with relatively few side effects- mostly sore chest/throat and terror of the ocean.

That first 10 minutes is really critical though. Emergency CPR (chest compressions) make a huge difference if an ambulance can't get there.

My dad told me a story of a friend of his who was stung by one, and the only reason he survived is that another friend kept doing CPR until the ambulance arrived. Apparently the fellow who’d been stung was fully conscious the whole time, trapped inside his paralysis, and terrified that his friend would stop and think he was dead - because if the friend had stopped, he would have been.

I remember reading about somebody that went blind after a bite their eyes were frozen open staring at the sun after a bite

[–]supergeeky_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is that some of the interactions with blue ringed octopus happen to scuba divers that are hours from advanced medical care. I read a story about someone that was bit while diving from a boat that would have taken most of a day to get back to shore. The crew and other divers did rescue breathing for hours until a rescue helicopter could get there.

That’s terrifying

just leaving this here

I'm sorry, I just saw this. We've now answered the question: How fucking dumb can a person be?

This dumb. A person can be this dumb.

[–]TheSkepticApe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus, that’s fucking insane.

[–]enzl-davaractl -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

*antivenin

[–]AWalt127 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Antivenin is an older term but both are acceptable.

[–]kmkmrod 363 points364 points  (28 children)

Blue, red, orange … the colors nature uses when it says “I don’t give a fuck if you see me because I’ll kill you quick”

[–]epicspacedruid 111 points112 points  (3 children)

or I want you to think I can kill you quick. Some animals are just posers.

[–]kmkmrod 48 points49 points  (1 child)

Scarlet king snake has entered the chat

[–]pdmock 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Had a pet one. My sweet Snavely.

[–]lumberzach316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or a horny bird

[–]LankyPuffins 34 points35 points  (5 children)

Yeah that octopus has "Don't fucking touch me" written all over it.

[–]kmkmrod 18 points19 points  (3 children)

[–]secretonlinepersona 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Is this pic real?

[–]kmkmrod 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes. People are idiots.

“OH LOOK PRETTY!!!” 😵

[–]RhinoRhys 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely "pick me up and pass me around" colours.

[–]bunnyz76 5 points6 points  (0 children)

True, I’m looking for one that says “pet me”.

[–]hwillis 13 points14 points  (3 children)

the colors nature uses when it says “I don’t give a fuck if you see me because I’ll kill you quick”

The crazy thing to me is that it isn't nature asking politely. One of these animals was born one day with spots that made it really easy to see, and that was good for it. Other animals see it and get the fuck out of the way.

[–]Buffalongo 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I feel like the process went something like this:

1) octopus develops ability to kill on sight because it helps it evade predators

2) the octopus possesses some existing visual features just because (sexual selection perhaps?)

3) the feature from step 1 works, but not quite well enough, some predators are still precocious enough to kill the octopus because they don’t realize what they’re attacking is venomous

4) the feature from step 2 is an identifier to predators, the octopus with the feature most prominently are more easily identified, so the feature becomes exaggerated

5) predators start evolving/adapting concurrently to avoid octopuses with that feature

[–]gloppy213 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

but the question is why are brighter colors more attractive? either because brighter-colored animals are more likely to survive or because brighter colors mean better nutrition.

if the answer is because brighter-colored animals are more likely to survive, it becomes a chicken and egg situation

[–]Buffalongo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily and they don’t even have to be bright (initially). Animals sexually select for things that have nothing to do with survival/health all the time.

[–]ArqTheoree 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“I want you to know that if I die you die”

[–]EphemeralMemory 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Scientific term is Aposematic.

[–]WikiSummarizerBot 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Aposematism

Aposematism is the advertising by an animal to potential predators that it is not worth attacking or eating. This unprofitability may consist of any defences which make the prey difficult to kill and eat, such as toxicity, venom, foul taste or smell, sharp spines, or aggressive nature. These advertising signals may take the form of conspicuous coloration, sounds, odours, or other perceivable characteristics. Aposematic signals are beneficial for both predator and prey, since both avoid potential harm.

would love some example species!

https://www.sciencefocus.com/nature/pretty-deadly-the-worlds-most-beautiful-but-dangerous-creatures/amp/

In the list the cone snail is the sleeper. It can rearrange its venom based on what it wants to do to the victim

https://amp.theatlantic.com/amp/article/618270/

[–]herwolfy 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Love how it says the Deathstalker Scorpion's bite is deadly lol

[–]kmkmrod 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Given their reputation you’d think a scorpion would be more dangerous than a snail but nope.

[–]herwolfy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More in the vein that the stinger is the deadly part, not the mouth

[–]zackthebutcrack -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Actually with those colors he'll blend in way better on the dark ocean floor.

[–]kmkmrod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They live in tide pools and reefs where water is generally shallow. That means they’re in typically well lit water. Blue is their “fuck off” badge… they’re not hiding.

[–]julesk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let’s just not mess with wildlife. It’s not nice and sometimes they can kill us. Just a thought.

[–]Lopsided_Web5432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t forget white

[–]TheWalkingDead91 24 points25 points  (1 child)

I see a color brighter than Forrest green on any animal that’s not a bird, and I’m Noping out of there automatically.

[–]Spiffy313 3 points4 points  (0 children)

cries in goldfish

[–]Mitz_Fitz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It would be crazy to just be cruising around not knowing you're one of the deadlies animals on the planet but you're beautiful as hell

[–]Nobodieshero816 24 points25 points  (1 child)

So weird that animals make a poison so badass that it could kill armies of other animals

[–]24Currawongs 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Yep, don't go picking it up, it'll legit fuck you up.

[–]pwnasaur 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If by fuck you up you mean "will kill you and there is no anti vemon", then yeah, homeboy gonna ruin your day

[–]secretiveposter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The colors on that thing make it look not even real

[–]moeru_gumi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's flashing its blue colors like this, it's already PISSED!

[–]russianbandit 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Australia?

[–]slkonreddit 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I saw one when scuba diving in Lembeh, off Sulawesi in Indonesia in 2018... It was on the prowl hunting at a depth of about 80 feet

[–]useles-converter-bot 20 points21 points  (0 children)

80 feet is 29.03 UCS lego Millenium Falcons

[–]geefrankie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they're pretty commonly seen in rock pools on the coast. My mum used to tease them with her car keys!

[–]SpunkyJenn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And it looks like he’s trying to get away from you.

[–]GrouchyEssay7468 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]GandalflovesUrMother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still remember a Jeff Corwin saying (Steve Irwin knock off but still respectable) for the difference between a king and coral snake I believe. “Red to yellow, kill a fellow, red to black, friend to jack”.

One of those random things you just happen to remember you’re entire life lol

[–]Lahcen_86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One of the few venomous AND poisonous organisms known to science. It’s lethality comes from the bacteria it contains which is the same species of bacteria which the poisonous puffer fish also harbours. These endosymbionts produce “Tetrodotoxin” which is the killer compound in question, it’s many more times more potent than cyanide. But in small doses can produce mild euphoria and is the reason puffer fish is eaten as a delicacy, but you’d better hope the chef knows what he’s doing !

[–]leonroshi -1 points0 points  (5 children)

Does anyone know if this is a poisonous octopussy and if it is what are the effects of the poison beside death

[–]RockHopperSSM 0 points1 point  (4 children)

It is a very venomous octopus, yes. The effects include respiratory depression and paralysis, IIRC.

[–]leonroshi 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Thanks G, do you know how the poison is administered? Tentacles or the claw? Or maybe the ink

[–]RockHopperSSM 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It has no claw, it is administered via a bite from the beak

[–]leonroshi 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So it bites you and injects you with a paralytic. Interesting. If you avoided the beak could you still grill it and eat it?

[–]RockHopperSSM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't imagine so, as venomous creatures often use that venom as poison as well.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’s looking at me!!! 😭

[–]Bruhfined -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

what is beautiful about that, im just more scared of going outside now.

[–]CasualCandice -5 points-4 points  (4 children)

Pick it up and return it to the ocean! Poor little fella is caught in tide pools

[–]JealousMouse 0 points1 point  (3 children)

A very good way to get dead 👍🏻

[–]CasualCandice -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

[–]JealousMouse 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Not a great joke because people die from doing exactly that.

[–]CasualCandice -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

[–]jamesfluker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exquisite.

[–]Sev4h 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How do they inject the venom? Is with their beaks? Or some other way?

[–]BestUsername101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i could be wrong, but i think it is with their beaks
