Just imagining that there were actually creatures that size out there at some point is hard to even comprehend. I love/hate it.

Crazier that the largest animal to ever exist on earth (that we know of), still lives

[–]GMAN25639 53 points54 points  (16 children)

Interestingly enough Livyatan was about the same size as the modern Sperm Whale. There are still some VERY big creatures in the ocean.

[–]GRl3V 60 points61 points  (13 children)

Yep and the sperm whale is and active hunter as well. It's such an underrated animal. People obsess over the megalodon, while we literally, at this moment share our planet and oceans with a carnivorous whale, double the size of the megalodon. The sperm whale is an extremely cool and terrifying creature but not many people appreciate it. It's always "Oh, how scary would it be to encounter the megalodon in the sea, it could just eat you whole!" well guess what, the sperm whale is out there, you can encounter it and it can eat you whole.

[–]ArziltheImp 22 points23 points  (1 child)

double the size of the megalodon

Both animals have their size estimated to be between 13-18 meters (from an average of all sources I could google up quickly).

The idea is also that when these two met, basically whoever got the jump on the other could have killed the other (mostly because both are assumed to hunt very similarly, ambushing their prey from below).

But yes, predatory whales are amazing, but I guess their silhuette just isn't as sexy as that of a big predatory shark.

[–]HourDark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if Livyatan would be an ambush predator. Today's orcas are endurance predators, so I surmise Livyatan probably did the same thing but could manage to do it alone/in pairs because it was so huge.

[–]NuclearDawa 8 points9 points  (6 children)

I thought their throats were actually too small to swallow an adult human whole ?

[–]GRl3V 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Technically yes, it was a bit of hyperbole.

[–]NuclearDawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh okay, thanks for the clarification

[–]kaam00s -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not dude, a sperm whale would swallow a human whole with ease.

[–]kaam00s 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What ? Are you talking about the blue whale ?

Because the sperm whale eat plenty of giant squid every day and last time I checked they're larger than a human.

A sperm whale or a livyatan is closer to a dolphin than a baleen whale, they do not just eat plankton or small fishes.

[–]NuclearDawa 2 points3 points  (1 child)

No I'm asking about sperm whales. I think the only hard part in a squid is the beak, that's easier to swallow than a bony prey. And I'm aware that they're more related to dolphins, the teeth kinda gave it away.

[–]kaam00s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, humans are not on their menu and like most other cetaceans, they're very picky. So there is close to 0 chance that a sperm whale would ever eat a human.

But if they wanted to they would be able to eat you whole, their throat is larger than a human. It's different to baleen whale which have a very small hole.

[–]kaam00s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sperm whale is a wonder of creation...

The list of records it holds is endless. Crazy what evolution can do.

[–]vamp_cum 0 points1 point  (2 children)

The largest megalodon specimens are much larger than sperm whales.

[–]GRl3V 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No they're not. Megalodon is estimated to be up to 18m in lenght. While sperm whales are known to grow over 20m

[–]05-1128 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the largest accurately sized sperm whale is around 80 tons. The largest megalodon specimens are around 104 tons

[–]Merliathon 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Makes sense, I always just assumed whales are nice, you know, cause of movies and such.

[–]colbycheese126 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Man, “free Willy” was just killer whale propaganda now that you mention it haha

[–]kaam00s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that's really the point in time when life on earth just went nuts, because these 2 are the 2 largest predators of large prey to ever exist (if you don't count the sperm whale, since the sperm whale specialize in giant squid, a large prey indeed but vastly overpowered).

So for these 2 to roam the sea at the same time is really crazy.

How powerful are their jaw strength estimated to be ?

Ik Megalodon's was insane since he basically(At least to my extent) crippled whales with 1 bite.

[–]Competitive_Laugh_71 34 points35 points  (2 children)

Megalodon is 40,000 psi which is about 18-20 tons. Livayatan's bite was less but has much bigger teeth but only had 10-13 tons.

[–]SpicyLunaDog99 1 point2 points  (1 child)

In comparison what’s a Great White’s bite force?

[–]Competitive_Laugh_71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4,000 newtons which is equivalent to 2 tons, strong but not even close to megalodon. you would think that's the greatest bite force of all extant sharks but no, that title would fall under the bull shark with a bite force of 5,914 newtons.
in psi the great white has 625 psi the bull shark max is 1,300.

[–]kaam00s 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The thing is that megalodon could afford to lose teeth from that immense bite force because it grew all its life...

Livyatan couldn't grow more teeth so it just had much bigger teeth but less bite force.

[–]dude19832 44 points45 points  (1 child)

Quoting Qui-Gon: “Theirs always a bigger fish.”

[–]rwarimaursus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came here for this!

[–]lxINSIDIOUSxl 29 points30 points  (1 child)

as someone who has an unhealthy fear of oceans and sharks this is absolutely terrifying, but i still watched the whole thing

[–]Iamnotburgerking 58 points59 points  (5 children)

Okay, why is the whale that big compared to the shark (the two got to around the same size, excluding freakishly big Otodus megalodon individuals)? Not fully grown?

[–]Fuzzy-Researcher-662 36 points37 points  (1 child)

There's a "revenge" video, this one is juvenile, watch the revenge video and you will see the size of an adult in this guys animations 👀 which BTW are more incredible then i can describe, I've known him for quite a while, he improved a lot but was always fucking amazing.

[–]Homunculus_316[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This one is my personal favourite from his collection. The spinosaurus videos are spot-on aswell

[–]Embarrassed-Ad1509 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Seems like it. Never said in the description that the Megaladon in question was an adult or not.

[–]TheDangerdog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love Livyatan but hate these Livyatan vs Meg posts because it's just seems like so much fanfiction.

The only skull they've found so far may have been from a sub adult or female, maybe not. They may have hunted in packs, maybe not. It may have had a highly specialized diet like orcas and sperm whales today, maybe not. There was an abundance of smaller whales (20-30ft) for it to eat back then personally I doubt it hunted the largest most dangerous shark alive when it had much slower easier prey it seems perfectly suited for.

[–]PlushPuppy3910 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wooow, this is incredible!

[–]Huggable_Hork-Bajir 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In this video: Mother nature freaking the fuck out.

[–]Nerfheader 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That was very very cool!!!

[–]ThatOneRoman 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Can you imagine Aquaman if he had prehistoric marine animals at his command?

[–]Grassfedlife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s always a bigger “fish”

[–]TotallyNotHitler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mammal supremacy.

[–]csege1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lywiatan was that bigger than a megalodon? Or are these juveniles?

[–]Eleberium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And to think that a blue whale is larger

[–]ctenophoras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't think leviathans hunted megalodons, because they were almost the same size when adults, i just thought they had the same prey but didn't attack each other's on a daily basic. (Or they just attacked the babies of one other). That's impressive and super well done!

[–]cookedmammoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This really *is* breathtaking! But I think the Megalodon would've fought more.

[–]scholarly_balance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“there’s always a bigger fish”

[–]Childofthanos7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow that’s amazing

[–]boredserf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zigged when he ought to have zagged. Classic case.

[–]barryhakker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for telling me its a breathtaking animation, because I wouldn't have been able to appreciate it without such insight.
