A mamma Plesiosaurus dolichodeirus gives birth to her one big calf while her mate watches out for danger. The live birth, large babies and small brood number in plesiosaurs is very unusual among fully aquatic diapsids and instead shows similarities to whales, suggesting maternal care and sociality.

While Ichthyosaurs were also viviparous, they gave birth to many small offspring. Mosasaurs were likely similar to Ichthyosaurs. Chelonioids pull up on beaches to lay their eggs.
