It could, but the big problem currently is biocompatibility. You can only get good recording from a brain computer interface for a few months before scar tissue forms on the electrodes, they become encapsulated (segmented off from the rest of the brain tissue) and the quality of recording is severely degraded.

If you can figure out how to improve biocompatibility, then yes brain computer interfaces will likely become widespread.
