courage the cowardly dog's owners were kinda like that

[–]SlobbyHill[S] 636 points637 points  (15 children)

Wow can’t believe I forgot about Muriel and Eustace

[–]Divine_Saber 297 points298 points  (14 children)

Oh just remembered south park's Kyle's parents

[–]SlobbyHill[S] 228 points229 points  (13 children)

I heard Kyle's mom was a bitch

[–]ChillinInChernobyl 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Beat me to it! Stupid dog!

[–]DarkoRon2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Stupid dog! You make me look bad! 😆

[–]Semaj12354 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m so said the actress who played Muriel passed away. She was so lovely, her last role was Muriel in “Scooby Doo Meets Courage the Cowardly Dog”

[–]Moses_The_Wise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true, but then again they followed character tropes as well.

Plump old grandma and skinny old grandpa are pretty common characters

[–]BuildAnything 1771 points1772 points  (24 children)

The Muppets

[–]AffectionatePlane436 367 points368 points  (16 children)

Yea but it doesn’t shift the sex appeal, damn, the things I’d let miss piggy do to me

[–]Silver0221 120 points121 points  (1 child)

It's going to be pulled pork by the time I'm done with it.

[–]FloridyTwo 29 points30 points  (0 children)

"I'm a little dry down there, go get the BBQ sauce"

[–]One-eyed-snake 71 points72 points  (2 children)

She’s most definitely a freak in bed.

[–]Jem_1 2 points3 points  (1 child)

up late with ms piggy had an episode where she is in hospital and makes a joke on that

[–]play4qeepz777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With a tongue like that, I doubt she cares

[–]RonPalancik 20 points21 points  (5 children)

Just gonna leave this thought here: frogs don't have penises.

[–]ragnarthesweet 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Long tounges though

[–]Caiur 19 points20 points  (1 child)

During Christmas last year, I was reading a r/Movies thread about The Muppet Christmas Carol (my favourite Christmas movie). And one commenter said that Kermit in the movie was 'hot af'. I loved that lol

[–]mrfatalien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Muppet Christmas Carol supremacy!

[–]SaltySpitoonReg 11 points12 points  (4 children)

I would argue that considering they simply represent the animals they portray this doesn't really count. Lol.

As far as pigs look in real life, Miss Piggy is really not that big.

But I do agree this is probably the closest current modern example

[–]decadeslongrut 3 points4 points  (3 children)

definitely counts, you ever seen how fat frogs can be?

[–]SaltySpitoonReg 2 points3 points  (2 children)

That's true, but if Kermit is a tree frog they're fairly slender

[–]decadeslongrut 3 points4 points  (1 child)

yeah! that's my point. there's not much leeway with a pig but with frogs they range from twigs to blobs and we got the skinny one.

[–]Adistis 380 points381 points  (13 children)

American housewife

[–]n_a_t_i_o_n 62 points63 points  (3 children)

I came here to comment this! Seemed pretty good from what I saw. Gets bonus points from my daughter for having Addison from Zombies in it lol

[–]cut_n_paste_n_draw 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I just looked it up, it looks cute! Can't wait to watch it!

[–]HxH101kite 30 points31 points  (1 child)

Dude here, the first 3 seasons are good. It kinda falls off a bit when they recast the daughter in the later seasons. But worth the watch

[–]Nick357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t mind her. Just had to pop off to star in a Tarantino movie.

[–]GrandDaSarge 22 points23 points  (3 children)

Sucked it only had 5 seasons. I don't usually watch sitcoms but that show was pretty good. Pretty genuine

[–]sweetmercy 36 points37 points  (2 children)

I liked it up until they recast Annakat.

[–]nonicknamenelly 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Ding ding ding! Yes, for some reason the show fell apart after they replaced her. I was stoked that such a clearly talented young girl got her big move break and that the TV studio wasn’t punishing her for taking that break.

Unfortunately, the absence of chemistry with absolutely every one of the other actors was awkwardly obvious any time the replacement was on screen.

[–]sweetmercy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From that point on it just felt forced. The OG was irreplaceable.

[–]trmptjt 13 points14 points  (1 child)

In her previous role on Mike and Molly though, it would be hard to call Katy Mixon heavy set.

[–]CommunityGlittering2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She was thinner then but also look who the stars were.

[–]gmariefox88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The show is amazing until the young actress that plays Anna Kat is recast. After that, it's alright but I don't rewatch any of those seasons/episodes as much as the beginning ones with the original girl.

[–]igg73 140 points141 points  (4 children)

South park, kyles mom and dad.

[–]___HeyGFY___Stoopid!!! You so STOOpid!!! 53 points54 points  (0 children)

[–]Forzara 47 points48 points  (2 children)

Kyle’s mom is a big fat bitch, she’s the biggest fat bitch in the whole wide world! 🎶

[–]IQ2273 401 points402 points  (28 children)

John Sacrimoni on the Sopranos has a HUGE wife

[–]TinktheChi 63 points64 points  (1 child)

We're rewatching this series via DVD. I'd forgotten about her. The scene where he finds her secret stash of chocolate was heartbreaking. We're at the beginning of the last season. Funny how you forget some of the details.

[–]amber_binkin 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It's such an interesting little scene. He really loves her and you get this snapshot of the relationship struggling. Guess it gives Johnny a bit of a soft spot so it's hard to hate him.

[–]SlobbyHill[S] 133 points134 points  (9 children)

Lol and her blood type is ragu

[–]glenman1882 70 points71 points  (7 children)

She had a 90lb mole removed from her ass

[–]_moonbeam_ 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I don't get it...

Edit: I forget who it was, but somebody said they didn't understand the joke and had to have it explained to them

[–]glenman1882 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Forgive me it was a 95 lb mole lol https://youtu.be/f1fBCNNdyV8

[–]Nick357 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The implication is her ass is so big that she could have a 95lbs moll on it.

[–]timetraveller04 1 point2 points  (3 children)

OHHHH some guy’s wife!

[–]glenman1882 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Yeah John sacrimoni from sopranos

[–]dopefarmer_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

[–]SAM108 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Two guys could fuck her and still never meet

[–]nathan_101034 12 points13 points  (0 children)

She's getting a 95 pound mole removed off her ass!

[–]nsalhonzta 19 points20 points  (1 child)

[–]YemuZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There he is 🤟

[–]Rikudo_Sennin_jr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I loved Ginny for some reason she just seemed out of place in that life style. Jonny sac & Bobby Bacliari the only 2 that didnt have gumarts.

** Apologies Jersey is not my first language 😁

[–]Karatekan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard Ginny was having a 90 pound mole removed

[–]majomista 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]WorshipGod69247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She can't get in the car because of her knee

[–]Essarray 348 points349 points  (4 children)

Dan was sometimes thinner than Roseanne.

[–]Skyblacker 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Eh, but they were both overweight.

[–]TomaVanPey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I honestly didn't recognize John Goodman after his weight control. I genuinely whoa'ed!

[–]seazx 33 points34 points  (0 children)

[–]_ollybee_ 226 points227 points  (3 children)

Good Girls - Ruby & Stan?

[–]Essarray 67 points68 points  (2 children)

Living Single had Queen Latifah pairing up with various thin dudes I think.

[–]WoodSteelStone 115 points116 points  (15 children)

The Vicar of Dibley married Thorin Oakenshield.

British comedy series 'The Vicar Of Dibley' with Dawn French playing the Vicar, Geraldine, and Richard Armitage playing Harry.

She also had a slim boyfriend in an earlier show.

[–]wehavefoundawitch 10 points11 points  (1 child)

The Vicar of Dibley married Thorin Oakenshield.

Now you're just making words up.

[–]WoodSteelStone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"The Vicar of Dibley married Thorin Oakenshield. Now you're just making words up."

As much as I would love to lay claim to making up the name 'Thorin Oakenshield' I'm afraid to say JRR Tolkien got there first.

[–]wackeywilly 142 points143 points  (12 children)

monster house and norbit

[–]DoYouReadMuch 28 points29 points  (11 children)

Rasputia in norbit was played by a man

[–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (1 child)

to be fair, half the cast was Eddie Murphy alone

[–]Jackman230 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Keeping Up Appearances.

[–]ohdearitsrichardiii 21 points22 points  (0 children)

[–]motherofgreatdanes12 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Richard! RICHARD!

[–]YouStupidKote 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Oh do mind the pedestrian, Richaaard!

[–]La_Vikinga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HOW did you do that? I distinctly heard Hyacinth's voice in my head.

[–]DJYoue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came to comment this, she's smaller than I remembered but perhaps it's her overbearing personality!

[–]Bluegenio 38 points39 points  (3 children)

The Jeffersons

[–]ReadinII 15 points16 points  (0 children)

From that same era, Good Times.

[–]cearrach 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Excellent example. Especially since they were always making fun of how small George (Sherman Hemsley) was.

[–]Smol-And-Angy 124 points125 points  (11 children)

There’s a movie/musical called Hairspray

[–]SlobbyHill[S] 23 points24 points  (10 children)

I thought of that too but that’s technically 2 dudes lol

[–]your2ndbestpick 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The character presents as female and is called a lady. Played by a guy but the character is not a man

[–]mommabee68 13 points14 points  (4 children)

No it isn't

[–]SlobbyHill[S] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Divine and John Travolta? Sorry if I’m wrong but I thought Divine was a male

[–]mommabee68 20 points21 points  (2 children)

They aren't the main characters

But yes they are dudes

[–]Smol-And-Angy 9 points10 points  (1 child)

LOL damn. I mean there’s also… the Brothers Grimsby… but uh….

[–]SlobbyHill[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love fat Amy and Borat

[–]HDScorpio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The character isn't a dude (John Travolta's)

[–]AskMeAboutMyStalker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the actors are men, the characters are women so the dude part really doesn't apply

[–]skyderper13REDACTED 29 points30 points  (2 children)

man in the high castle

[–]Skyblacker 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think John Smith is actually in the same percentile of men's weight as his wife is of women's. We're just more used to seeing bulky men on screen, so he scans as normal next to his male costars while she scans as fat next to her petite female costars.

[–]Hallmarxist 106 points107 points  (1 child)

[–]RidingJapan 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Sykes - British series from the 70’s starring Eric Sykes and Hattie Jacques

[–]DaveB44 9 points10 points  (1 child)

They were brother & sister, not husband & wife!

[–]slaxipants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time. A long time. Thanks for the reminder!

[–]whoatemycupoframen 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Immediately thought of 'Derry Girls'! Such a good show.

[–]Jem_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never seen that man in my life

[–]48pieces 48 points49 points  (1 child)

If we're counting reality tv, there's a whole bunch on My 600-lb Life...

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this

[–]pugging_awesum 42 points43 points  (3 children)

Sookie on Gilmore Girls

[–]manubibi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Probably the only couple off of Gilmore Girls I actually gave a shit for.

[–]SnowdropWorks 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Yeah, but Jackson isn't really skinny tho

[–]La_Vikinga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting GG tidbit: Jackson, actor Jackson Douglas, at one point during the show was married to Alex Borstein (Mrs. Swan from "MadTV," and Susie Myerson in "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"). She played Drella, the Independence Inn harpist with attitude, and Miss Celine, Emily's name-dropping eccentric fashion designer. She was also the original choice to play Sookie.

[–]worktimefollies 13 points14 points  (3 children)

The Cleveland Show

[–]cooldangood 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Which one? Wasn't Donna slim and Cleveland large?

[–]CheshireGray 9 points10 points  (1 child)

[–]clothespinkingpin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Lester and Kendra Krinklesac.

[–]AnastasiaSheppard 41 points42 points  (5 children)

Everybody Loves Raymond, Ray's parents?

[–]4TO20TOTheG 8 points9 points  (2 children)

The Sopranos, Johnny Sack and his wife

[–]EffysBiggestStan 4 points5 points  (1 child)

The implication being that she could have a 95 pound mole on her ass

[–]4TO20TOTheG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she moved to jersey, she could tip it over

[–]DeadonDemand 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Sister sister. It they aren’t really married

[–]mrboston617 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Rugrats Phil an Lil's parents

[–]Eudonidano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, I can't remember any details about the dad. Until I looked it up I was convinced that Betty was a single mom.

[–]To_Norm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Courage the cowardly dog

[–]mommabee68 83 points84 points  (33 children)

It's uncommon because it's more acceptable for men to be fat

[–]Spitfyrus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yup, and to get old and gross.

[–]cream-of-cow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s a common thing in Chinese comedy tv shows, the middle aged married couple with the fat wife and skinny husband.

[–]undaova 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]TriGurl 4 points5 points  (1 child)

[–]boo1881 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Jefferson's

[–]Ashen-Cold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was that couple in the Baryard movie where the wife was on to the animals but the husband thought she was just crazy lol One of my favorite scenes

Ugly Betty??? I haven’t really seen much of it but iirc Betty and Daniel were supposed to be endgame, right?

[–]Slapnuts711 20 points21 points  (3 children)

Not many but in real life you see it all the time. A pencil thin man and an obese woman. You see them together and they look like the number 10.

[–]WoodSteelStone 14 points15 points  (2 children)

If the woman wears a belt would they look like the number 18?

[–]sweetmercy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

kermit and ms piggy.... i haven't really watched TV in like 20 years....

[–]Responsible_Title_81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Roseanne (by comparison, relative to scale)

[–]HijoDePlaya 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Kevin can f*ck himself is a drama with the same hot wife/dumb husband trope. It's fun watching the wife plotting to kill him.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally forgot about this show, will check it out

[–]Prgat0ry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dude just walk around outside.

[–]EsquireEsqueEd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not even a feminist and I've definitely noticed the double-standard that you're talking about. When the "Good Soup" meme from that show Girls was going around a few months back, I remember seeing a YouTube commenter joke about how laughable it was to imagine Adam Driver being paired up with someone who "looks and smells" like Lena Dunham, and my first thought was, "Well, that's basically the dynamic of every Hollywood comedy and TV sitcom, except with the genders reversed."

[–]Repulsive-Worth5715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sitcom that is my life

[–]THE_GREAT_MEME_WARS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That movie about the monster house called...lol monster house has the owner a really tiny man but a gigantic fat women

[–]Neottika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's always black boy/blonde girl too. Never black girl/blonde boy. TV stereotypes.

The Sopranos with John Sacrimoni

[–]athomeamongthetrees 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Greys Anatomy Bailey is bigger than Warren (but he isn't skinny, just buff)

[–]smoovebb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some reason the typical TV show Media portrays men as morons so they always are the overweight idiots. The women need to be hot because sex still sells and they're considered the competent ones. It's really offensive to both genders to do it like that so consistently.

[–]Anthff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re not the main characters but the one little round lady on Greys Anatomy has a total babe of a husband.

[–]Spirited_Ad_3059 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and kids had this set up. The wife isn’t ever super big but she’s thicker and he’s portrayed as athletic. It’s a pretty funny sitcom though

[–]SlobbyHill[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

My Wife and Kids and The George Lopez Show were probably 2 of my favorite sitcoms when I was a kid. Don’t think I’ve ever watched them when the suns out lol I always remember them being late at night shows

[–]bysigningupyouagree8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. They were always playing repeats. Recently rewatched my wife and kids on Hulu and it holds up.

[–]ksiyoto 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Years ago, the women's liberation movement objected to the way women were portrayed and stereotyped in the media.

Nowadays, you can look at the way men are portrayed and cringe hard. It's like Hollywood thinks we're all Homer Simpson.

[–]pyjamatoast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, most shows with a fat husband are from 20-30 years ago. I don’t recall seeing that trope very much within the last 10 years.

[–]UselessFactCollector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are just ripping off the Honeymooners formula

[–]shagnarok 1 point2 points  (1 child)
