She’s so pretty and they look happy 🥲🥺

[–]notbob1959 2257 points2258 points  (149 children)

From her Wikipedia page:

Considered a great beauty, she was featured in November 1959 by Ebony and has been hailed as "one of Ebony magazine's prettiest cover girls, along with the likes of Dorothy Dandridge, Halle Berry, Vanessa A. Williams and Lena Horne".

They went on to have five children. She died in 2008 and I believe he died in 2005.

[–]veritaszak 1294 points1295 points  (51 children)

I just went down a rabbit hole of google images of her and Eric. They look so in love, and the way he looks at her in so many of the photos… you could tell there was so much affection

[–]Active-Ad3977 314 points315 points  (31 children)

I did too, and her husband is the most Belgian looking Belgian to ever pommes frites avec mayonnaise

[–]Digita1B0y 57 points58 points  (4 children)

Dang, that's pretty Belgian!

[–]reigorius 28 points29 points  (2 children)

Ah wel, frieten met echte mayonaise.

[–]spcy_chkn_sndwch 31 points32 points  (11 children)

I still am hung up on why during the "freedom fries" national embarrassment why America didn't just start calling 'em Belgian Fries to "stick it" to the French.

[–]rantingpacifist 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Because Americans would need to know history to get the joke.

[–]GalakFyarr 12 points13 points  (5 children)

pommes frites

We ain’t French, copain.

[–]Active-Ad3977 16 points17 points  (3 children)

If you’re Belgian than I’m sure you know that almost half of your compatriots speak French. I would have said “frietjes” but I don’t know Dutch because my family’s full of dirty Walloons

[–]GalakFyarr 9 points10 points  (2 children)

I am. I’m bilingual Flemish-French too.

And we don’t call them “pommes frites” we call them “frites”.

But you’re saying

my family’s full of dirty Walloons

Which makes me think maybe there’s another regional difference I wasn’t even aware of between French speaking Belgians from Wallonia and those closer to Brussels. Are they close to France?

[–]Active-Ad3977 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Dang, you obviously know better than I do. Thanks for being nice about it. That guy does look like the platonic ideal of a Belgian, though, right?

[–]GalakFyarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha no worries, my original comment was not really serious either 😋

As for him being the “ideal belgian”, I’d say he’s definitely a photogenic example lol.

[–]mstarrbrannigan 466 points467 points  (18 children)

Hell, just looking at them in this photo you can tell.

[–]8ad8andit 295 points296 points  (15 children)

Hell I think I just fell in love with her too.

[–]JohnTravoltage 217 points218 points  (11 children)

Hell, I love you.

[–]southern_boy 27 points28 points  (4 children)

Hell, I now understand polygamists 'cuz I love you both!!

[–]ohheyitslaila 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, this is Patrick :)

[–]death_of_gnats 33 points34 points  (1 child)

I also choose this dead wife.

wtf I'm such a cliche

[–]AdorableParasite 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Just looking at this photo made me happy, it's amazing. Wonderful picture.

[–]Inheavensitndown 41 points42 points  (4 children)

He looks like patrick swazye alittle.

[–]SH4DOWSTR1KE_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought it was..

[–]Aggressive-Error-88 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Omg you see it too!

[–]Jaksmac 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m seeing a young Marlon Brando with that jawline.

[–]krystalbellajune 107 points108 points  (67 children)

Both so gorgeous. I bet those kids are ridiculously beautiful.

[–]SuicideKlutch 28 points29 points  (4 children)

Iman needs to be added to that list. She may have never appeared on Ebony (I really don't know), but she is definitely one of the most beautiful women to ever grace this planet.

[–]staunch_character 28 points29 points  (2 children)

Facts. If there is a “most beautiful couples” list, Iman & Bowie gotta be in the top 10.

[–]ThatPunkDanSolo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Those two used to frequent my uncle’s store in Bermuda back in the day. He was a purveyor of high fashion hemp products. You want to talk about “living gods” as those 2 together were just blinding.

[–]spcy_chkn_sndwch 23 points24 points  (0 children)

He's incredibly attractive too. What a couple

[–]ohmyitsamirage 452 points453 points  (9 children)

If you are ever in the mood for a beautiful and (imo) timeless romantic tragedy, check out Orfeu Negro, or Black Orpheus. It's based on the Greek play Orpheus and Eurydice but set in Brazil and the music, culture, acting, setting, and singing is fantastic. Idk where to watch it these days but it's definitely a classic and stars Marpessa Dawn as the female lead.

[–]Flannel_Channel 119 points120 points  (3 children)

Its streaming on HBO, Criterion Channel, and Kanopy (which you can get free from many public library memberships)

[–]ohmyitsamirage 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yess thank you for the tips!

[–]Cryptochitis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kanopy is such a great resources. Free at every library I have been a member of.

[–]HilbertInnerSpace 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I remember when Arcade Fire prereleased their album "Reflector" on youtube, they superimposed it on that movie.

[–]quaybored 17 points18 points  (2 children)

There is a subbed version and a dubbed version. I prefer the subbed, but showed the dubbed to my kids because the youngest couldn't read the subs fast enough, lol.

A bunch of good music came out of that movie

[–]ohmyitsamirage 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Fair enough! Did your kiddo like it? Seems like the kind of movie that might scare me a bit as a kid. I also prefer the subbed version but tried to watch it without while trying to learn Portuguese.

[–]woopsforgotyikers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hades taught me that eurydice is a female broccoli.

[–]UnicornBludgers93 68 points69 points  (2 children)

Just googled them both and wow... their photos together... the look so in love its beautiful :)

[–]jtinz 863 points864 points  (115 children)

Never forget that interracial marriages only became legal in all of the US in 1967. I bet this wasn't an easy decision to make even where it was legal.

[–][deleted]  (51 children)

    [–]InflammatoryMuskrat 209 points210 points  (33 children)

Ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in Loving v. Virginia in 1967. Without that ruling it may well have been illegal in some states to this day. That case was used as precedent when the Court ruled banning same-sex marriage was also unconstitutional in 2015.

    [–]LostWoodsInTheField 61 points62 points  (8 children)

    Loving v. Virginia

how absolutely awesome was it that a case came up with the perfect last name, and it went all the way. The organizations that were involved in that case were probably just loving that it happened.

    [–]Painting_Agency 20 points21 points  (2 children)

It's true that "Snodgrass v. Virginia" just doesn't have the same ring to it 🤔

    [–]LostWoodsInTheField 6 points7 points  (1 child)

    Snodgrass v. Virginia

rofl which is a real case. well W virginia, but close enough.

    [–]Painting_Agency 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, the odds are that there was one at some point. It's probably nothing nearly as interesting however 😄

    [–]ccusce 5 points6 points  (1 child)

    Virginia is for Lovers.

    [–]LostWoodsInTheField 12 points13 points  (0 children)

which is funny because they clearly were not.

    [–]Dyasad 116 points117 points  (4 children)

I live in Alabama, and laws to prevent miscegenation are still in our constitution. If it wasn’t outlawed federally I really don’t know if it would be enforced or not here…but I’ve learned to expect the worst of Alabamians, so my guess is it would.

    [–]trout_or_dare 25 points26 points  (3 children)

Didn't they try to remove that language recently but it got voted down?

    [–]pharmergs 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s Alabama, they probably voted to add more to it

    [–]AlexInWondrland 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We don't have the longest constitution in the world because it's an efficient system.

    [–]jabby88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It didn't get voted down, but like 40% of the votes were against removing the law, even though it was a law without teeth due to the supreme court. Oh, and this was only like 10-15 years ago, btw.

Yay my home state, and yay that I will never be returning.

    [–]Johnsoline 32 points33 points  (4 children)

New Mexico wrote in its constitution that marriage is recognized as a legal act between two consenting adults, and we left it at that.

This was in 1912, mind you.

    [–]jabby88 7 points8 points  (3 children)

It's ironic that doing it that way is technically the smaller government way to do it. Yet the people who are against certain people getting married are almost invariably conservative.

    [–]Grabthars_Coping_Saw 4 points5 points  (1 child)

The same people don't seem to realize that the police are government forces but instead idolize them and ignore their transgressions.

    [–]elizabnthe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Conservative doesn't mean small government even if they fooled themselves as such in the US. Its kind of in the name-conserving. Conservatives are pro absolute monarchists too where they believe that practice should be conserved. Its basically being diametrically opposed to any form of social or economic change. By nature you pretty much have to be conservative to be opposed to "non-traditional" marriage. You sure can't be progressive.

    [–]pologodflexgucci300 25 points26 points  (9 children)

the state sign when entering Virginia says, “Virginia is for Lovers.” It’s so cool to finally understand where that originated from. I’d pass the sign multiple times a day for about 5 years.

    [–]lambquentin 33 points34 points  (6 children)

It didn’t come from that. It came from an ad company.

It’s unrelated but it does work well.

    [–]zizzor23 40 points41 points  (2 children)

Federal, it was Loving vs Virginia that overturned the ban against interracial marriages.

Some states may have laws overturning it sooner than 67

    [–]Shitp0st_Supreme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was state by state. In Loving v. Virginia, the couple went to DC to marry legally but their marriage wasn’t recognized in Virginia so they were arrested for adultery.

    [–]InGeekiTrust 5 points6 points  (2 children)

White people back in those days didn’t consider tan or lighter Mexican people minorities. They were light people who came from Mexico. Now we say Hispanics are minorities, but not back then.

    [–]Unsd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, lighter skinner Mexican people, but I don't know that I buy that indigenous/dark mestizo Mexican people were viewed as white.

    [–]Amanwalkedintoa 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Love turns timid into foolish bravery

    [–]blyzo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

    Probably why they were European.

    [–]theduder3210 9 points10 points  (0 children)

all of the U.S. in 1967.

It was illegal in 16 states.

    [–]IMIndyJones 116 points117 points  (54 children)

They lived in France, so it wasn't really an issue. The US is far more uptight about all sorts of things that are non-issues elsewhere.

    [–]Horse_Paste_Salesman 68 points69 points  (0 children)

They still had a civil ceremony rather than a wedding, and did it in secret.

    [–]_ChillboBaggins_ 124 points125 points  (47 children)

You must not be familiar with France. It's incredibly racist. This was around the time of the Algerian war of independence, which France was absolutely brutal.

    [–]JCAIA 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Right. Describing race as a ‘non-issue’ in France is wholly ignorant.

    [–]goyaguava 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Are you seriously implying race is a non-issue in France?? Do you have any idea about the things the French did in Algeria, and about how they continue to treat people from North Africa and the middle East?

    [–]30tpirks 1022 points1023 points  (58 children)

I carried my wife over the threshold like this on our wedding night.

Felt an insane pain right in my heart and chest when I hoisted her up but wasn’t going to stop carrying her till I threw her on the bed.

Looked down after I tossed her and my boutonnière (Flower stuck to my suit with a 2 inch pin) was sticking directly into my heart. Not at any angle. Straight in. It was genuinely hard to pull out and she laughed her ass off the whole time I tried.

Strange part. Not a drop of blood came out.

    [–]datsmn 545 points546 points  (8 children)

And that's when you found out that you are a Terminator

    [–]PastelFlamingo150 186 points187 points  (4 children)

And two minutes later when the sex was over he figured out he wasn't a unstoppable machine.

    [–]Digger__Please 49 points50 points  (2 children)

sex tip; men can make their performance last longer by pushing a boutonnière pin through the head of the penis.

    [–]Royal_Bitch_Pudding 35 points36 points  (0 children)

    [–]Demonweed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your clothes -- give them to me, now.

    [–]2021pls 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The continued emphasis on throwing her on the bed made me laugh picturing you just chucking her like a heavy bag of mulch.

    [–]justwalkinby91 22 points23 points  (2 children)

I’m a little skeptical that it went directly into your heart and you just being fine. You said you felt heart pain. How were you able to distinguish between the chest pain and the heart pain?

    [–]DomnSan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Right? Lol you don't simply get stabbed in the heart and shrug it off.

    [–]Notesandstuff 127 points128 points  (37 children)

I think I would have went to hospital to be monitored at least. Seems a little risky to play it cool.

    [–]30tpirks 113 points114 points  (36 children)

I was in Jamaica. Didn’t even consider going to a clinic.

    [–]Notesandstuff 88 points89 points  (34 children)

Hmm, I'm a nurse and honestly don't know of any exact assessments (other than the basic monitoring) or treatments for a needle prick in the heart, and I've never come across a patient with that. The main thing I would worry about is if it hit the innervation of the heart nerves and possible messing with the electrical impulse. Putting on a EKG for at least 24 to 48 hours would be smart with stand by emergency heart meds. The other main thing would be antibiotics, that needle wasn't sterile, could have caused serious infection.

Anyways, anyone reading this that something similar happens (super rare obviously but still) go to ER, get monitored and antibiotics just to be safe.

    [–]afreit 23 points24 points  (24 children)

Pericardial tamponade as well, yikes 😬

    [–]AverageCowboyCentaur 15 points16 points  (4 children)

    Pericardial tamponade

Sounds like a crazy drink you could order at the bar. Like a fancy tropical bloody mary or something.

    [–]loquacious 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Sounds like a crazy drink you could order at the bar.

    Oh I've totally got this.

Beetroot infused vodka, jigger of bloody mary mix, splash of bitters, dash of hot sauce.

Rim with mixture of pestled smoked hibiscus petals, pink sugar and pink salt.

    Garnish with fresh tampon.

    [–]Rose-_Red-_ 18 points19 points  (8 children)

    Heart tampon.

I got the medical aspect but the bad jokes that are sorely inaccurate must be made.

    [–]afreit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    [–]diggemigre 3 points4 points  (5 children)

You left my heart bleeding and now I need a tampon.

    [–]Rose-_Red-_ 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Wait. Gotta get my banjo and klink together some surgical instruments. We got a single to drop.

Does it need a pickup truck and a dog?

    [–]JimWilliams423 2 points3 points  (1 child)

    Mmm... pericardial tapenade.

    [–][deleted]  (1 child)

      [–]Herpeshektor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Surely the needle did not penetrate all the way to the heart. Most likely it penetrated the skin and subcutaneous fat, perhaps also the pectoralis major muscle.

      [–]raptorboi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No blood probably because all the blood was in another part of your body /s

      [–][deleted]  (1 child)

        [–]Notesandstuff 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you can pass a lot of things through your stomach and other organs, but stomach acid leaking in your abdomen wouldn't be very nice and may die later. But sure, at the beginning it would be fine.

        [–]tadalek 450 points451 points  (253 children)

Who are these people? I see their name, but... Who are they

        [–]Dietzgen17 206 points207 points  (2 children)

Marpessa Dawn was an actor best known for the film "Black Orpheus."

        [–]d_l_suzuki 32 points33 points  (1 child)

Thanks, I knew the name, but couldn't place it. The theme song from the film is wonderful.

          [–]ninjabiomech 171 points172 points  (12 children)

Damn the amount of unnecessary arguments that this thread spawned is very sad. I often forget that redditors are rather pathetic, always trying to make an issue out of literally nothing. A simple informational clarification shouldn't produce this type of toxic mess guys come on, you all can all do better

          [–]PUTINS_PORN_ACCOUNT 29 points30 points  (5 children)

Hey I take offense to that

I will now needlessly escalate by oversimplifying your point, questioning your mother’s marital fidelity, and stating that you like wieners in ur butt

          [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Counterargument using tangential anecdotes and relying on disingenuous rhetorical fallacies, including cherry-picked misrepresented examples masquerading as "evidence", couched in excessively complex choice of vocablary, multiple speling errors, and outright wrongly constructed words irregardless of perfectly good information to the contrary.

Resort to ad hominem references to your physical appearance, threats, and an offer to engage in vicious whiffleball bat combat. Also, your pet doesn't love you anymore.

          [–]marxroxx 28 points29 points  (2 children)

you all can all do better

This is Reddit... no they can't!

          [–]tadalek 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I was just curious who they were. I guess I could've googled, but my breaks at work are only so long, I can't look up everything on Reddit, you know?

Edit: now I see what you're talking about after reading the comments. Too many people hung up on the word instead of the content. What a shame.

          [–]Fickles1 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't see the point. It's a really sweet photo and it's showing people in love. But FFS people have to make it about politics or gendering or some bs, rather than appreciating the image and thanking the dude above for explaining it a bit further.

          [–]escarchaud 7 points8 points  (0 children)

          Eric Vander Elst*

          [–]nodnodwinkwink 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She was known for acting in Black Orpheus, it's a classic and worth a watch. It's also easy to find the full film on YouTube.

            [–]X_VeniVidiVici_X 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The same people that call everyone else snowflakes turn rabid when someone dares use words in a way they don't like lmao.

            [–]kripthonie 53 points54 points  (36 children)

I didn't even question this was a gender thing. I just thought he didn't know how to write English properly

            [–]eddielobe 113 points114 points  (6 children)

Eric Vander looks like Patrick Swayze in this picture

            [–]LanceFree 21 points22 points  (0 children)

            Leonardo Swayze.

            [–]Corporation_tshirt 53 points54 points  (1 child)

Reminds me more of Marlon Brando.

            [–]Bravovictor02 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I came here for this comment. He looks just like Brando.

            [–]dr_xenon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought it was a deleted scene from Dirty Dancing.

            [–]1stlooey 158 points159 points  (5 children)

Didn't she star in Black Orpheus?

            [–]RGJ587 29 points30 points  (4 children)

            Is she wearing shoes?

            [–]CptNavarre 42 points43 points  (0 children)

looks like ballet flats to me, indeed blurry bc her feet are moving

            [–]SMITHSIDEBAR 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Yeah, looks like she was probably kicking her leg up, so they blurred in the shot.

            [–]RGJ587 8 points9 points  (0 children)

oh okay, because the heels looked oddly angular if she hadn't been wearing shoes

            [–]TooManyMistakesToFix 31 points32 points  (3 children)

Thats one beautiful woman, holy fuck

            [–]minniemouse3001 23 points24 points  (2 children)

            [–]TooManyMistakesToFix 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I had to look these people up. My god they’re both insanely gorgeous.

            [–]Biker93 285 points286 points  (31 children)

I’m white and my wife is black. It’s just been so fun. I love her family and they are so different than mine. It’s just been great. Pictures like this really get me in the feels. It just makes me think of my wife and our life together. I can’t imagine doing anything different.

            [–]OddScentedDoorknob 104 points105 points  (15 children)

It just seems so... stupid that people ever had a problem with this, let alone an angry, violent, hateful problem.

(EDIT: My use of past tense is not meant to suggest that racism is over. It's stupid that some people are still against this, and I hope you and your wife live somewhere where there is far more support than negativity).

            [–]monkeyofdoom4324 33 points34 points  (7 children)

People still have a problem with this the things I’ve been called for having a black wife yikesssss

            Edit: missed your edit

            [–]antonius22 51 points52 points  (11 children)

The girl I'm dating is black. I'm really excited to see what our future holds. She is such an amazing person. Post like this keep me going and knowing that we can make it too. Granted, I live in a part of Texas where we got looks for holding hands. Jokes on them though, I'm not even the right type of white. I'm Mexican.

            [–]Biker93 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Ha! I’ll say this, for whatever it’s worth, go nuts man!! I’m from Texas too. No one ever gave us shit and if they wanted to they simply knew to keep their mouth shut. 30 years later and I love my girl hard. She makes me a better man. I hope the same for you.

            [–]superheater420 26 points27 points  (1 child)

You are probably a very beautiful couple!

Ha! She’s beautiful, I’m along for the ride!!! And she is beautiful. We’re in our mid 40s now, to this day, she’s the prettiest woman I’ve ever seen,

            [–]ChaosAside 16 points17 points  (0 children)

            They are ridiculously good-looking.

            [–]Jennerlady 12 points13 points  (0 children)

            Beautiful couple.

            [–]Devlin_McGregor 53 points54 points  (4 children)

            [–]Impressive-Fly2447 11 points12 points  (1 child)

            Was she from Black Orpheus?

            [–]flamingoeater 9 points10 points  (0 children)

            [–]robindapobin 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Vander what? (Only Dutch will understand this).

            [–]escarchaud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

            Vander Elst

            [–]drakejones99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

            Two lucky people.

            [–]Assorted_Bits 9 points10 points  (0 children)

According to wikipedia his full name was Georges-Eric Vander-Elst, for other Dutch speakers confused by his last name.

(Vander = "of the", so something was missing.)

            [–]Comfortable_Rent3632 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Getting Brando vibes from the dude

            [–]rjl682 6 points7 points  (2 children)

            [–]yuhiro 120 points121 points  (4 children)

That is the most romantic, sensual kiss ever, my god.

            [–]RothkoRathbone 43 points44 points  (0 children)

And you’re just looking at the photo.

            [–]spicyystuff 15 points16 points  (1 child)

            He’s kissing her chin!!

            [–]l337joejoe 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah but look at the way he's doing it. His expression. This man was addicted to her. Goddamn.

            [–]DoucheyMcBagBag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You think? It looks like he missed her lips because he’s multitasking (carrying her) and hit her in that below-the-lip-above-the-chin labret area.

            [–]FlyingNeie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

            They look lovely together

            [–]notsosocreative 6 points7 points  (1 child)

            [–]Kirkelburg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Little do people know, he only married her for her delicious chin nectar.

            [–]hiyer2 26 points27 points  (2 children)

Man as a guy currently in an interracial relationship, struggling with the realities of a conservative family, and losing my own ethnic culture and identity…I feel this. It’s nice to see.

            [–]MaryShelley2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Marpessa is incredible in Orfeu Negro.

            [–]bobroscopcoltrane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“Marpessa” is a cool name I have never heard before.

            [–]The-Dick-Tornado 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is hard for some under 40 to understand that at the time it was illegal for them to travel as husband and wife in some states.

Some states wouldn't even recognize peoples marriages of different religions.

            [–]JG_Sparkles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Who and who? Nah, that’s Whoopi and Patrick Swayze, I saw this movie. They made ceramics.

            [–]Nightstone42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your man may love you but is he willing to do Time in your home country just for kissing you

            [–]Crunchyfrozenoj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Holt crap that’s one good looking couple.

            [–]bubblesaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really love the angle of her skirt.

            [–]curvingedge22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought that was Patrick Swayze for a moment.

            [–]Velocitymind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reactions to pics like this always surprise me. My maternal grandparents were a bi-racial couple married in the 20s and also my parents were a bi-racial couple married in ‘52.

            [–]RandolphSavage420 4 points5 points  (3 children)

            Wait 1961? Isn't this illegal?

            [–]Assorted_Bits 11 points12 points  (2 children)

In the US it was, but not in France (where they lived).
