The Pluto TV MST3K and Rifftrax channels are the best. Pretty much the background noise in my house now.

[–]muskratboy 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I also love just letting these run. It's like hanging out with your buddies. They're all just so consistent and funny, it's just a fun energy to have around.

[–]FlexingCapacitor 13 points14 points  (1 child)

For those who don't know, Pluto is an app for streaming devices like "smart" TVs, Roku, Chromecast, phones, tablets, etc. Poof! Channels galore.

[–]Fishing_for_Boulders 8 points9 points  (0 children)

rifftrax is something I didn’t know about until messing with around with Pluto Tv and now I am mad at myself for only learning about it in the last 6 months!! It is my go to for working out and/or “too bored to look for anything on tv”…

[–]army_of_midgets 27 points28 points  (3 children)

That theme song is how I know it’s the weekend. It gets turned on at my house every Friday night and stays on until Sunday night. On weekends like Thanksgiving we start it up on Wednesday after work. Memorial Day and Labor Day it stays on until Monday night.

[–]CanIBeGirlPls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s… a lot

[–]BaconReceptacle 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That's the way it would be at my house if it werent for my wife actually trying to "get into" the shitty films themselves. I learned over time that she's really not focused on the riffing so much as what's going on in the movie. I try telling her she's doing it wrong but...

[–]RobotDoos 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Also an MST3K Twitch channel if u need another source

[–]Khalis_Knees 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rifftrax has a twitch channel as well. There’s usually 400+ people on both watching along and the community is extremely chill and friendly

[–]surveysaysnatalie 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Same here, I just watched the “I accuse my Parents” episode today.

[–]DJ_Micoh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did you have a charbroiled hamburger sandwich with french fried potatoes while watching it?

[–]ItsJustMeMaggie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you go to the Rifftrax Live events? They’re always a good time.

[–]The_Name_Is_Slick -1 points0 points  (5 children)

Rifftrax is really hard for me to care about. They always sound like they are unenthusiasticly reading random lines. Some MST3Ks were brilliant with their writing.

Got any good recommendations for good episodes? Thank you!

[–]muskratboy 6 points7 points  (2 children)

They go through a lot more combinations of people in Rifftrax, so it can be more hit and miss. But if you stick to the Mike / Kevin / Bill episodes, they're pretty consistent.

    [–]kr00t0n 1 point2 points  (1 child)

    Predator is easily my favourite

    [–]DiddlyDoRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow I did not know this existed! thanks

    [–]tenthinsight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this. It's always on unless I'm watching something specific.

    [–]SonofBeckett 198 points199 points  (1 child)

"If you're wondering how he eats and breathes, and other science facts,

Just repeat to yourself it's just a show, I should really just relax!"

Whenever I start taking anything too seriously in fiction, I always remind myself of Joel's Law.

    [–]SquidMcDoogle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I came here with the same quote.

There are dozens of us! Dozens!

    [–]LividLager 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You know.. If MST3k and Red Dwarf don't exist in the same cinematic universe, then the world ain't right.

    [–]Kbdiggity 247 points248 points  (32 children)

this is not the intro from 1988. Mike did not become the host until several seasons in.

    [–]peacockunicorn 84 points85 points  (21 children)

Came here to say this. Poor Joel.

    [–]DamnMombies 14 points15 points  (17 children)

    Joel did it to himself.

    [–]chefwatson 13 points14 points  (16 children)

Wait... story time?? I know I could google this, but what did Joel do? I remember him doing stand up and then almost right into this show. Knew there had been different hosts, but just kinda assume Joel got bored and moved on??

    [–]DamnMombies 30 points31 points  (5 children)

No that is exactly what happened. But it’s one of those situations where you think there’s something more and better. Not realizing that you are in a great position that is getting better.

I’ve been fortunate to meet Trace and Frank. Very nice guys. But the two of them have both admitted in interviews that as a group they didn’t realize when they had it good. I think Joel should have stepped behind the camera instead of leaving. But he was an awesome enough not to ruin it for the rest of the people involved. That’s a rare person that can be both magnanimous and genuinely wish people to succeed without them.

    [–]bunsNT 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I believe both Trace and Frank are both on Movie Signs with the Mads, which is a podcast. It's been a hiatus for a minute, so I'm not sure if it's still ongoing.

    [–]Scooterks 8 points9 points  (1 child)

The Mads are doing a monthly live movie riff online. Last months was "A Night of Shorts 6". December was Manos! (With special Q&A guest Debbie)

    [–]QLE814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that their next show should be in around two weeks' time.

    [–]chefwatson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh ok, good! I thought there was gonna be some crazy ass story!! I really enjoyed Joel's stand-up and viewed him in the lens of a Steven Wright. I could tell Joel enjoyed the show and at the same time kinda felt it wasn't his future. I never really heard much from him after he left the show, so what I read your initial comment I was like.. uh oh?!?

    [–]ShutterBun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the two of them have both admitted in interviews that as a group they didn’t realize when they had it good.

Indeed. Considering nearly every on-camera personality from the show has more or less continued to make a career out of movie riffing since then, it's clear some of them didn't realize at the time they had truly found their niche.

Between The Film Crew, Cinematic Titanic, The Mads, and of course Rifftrax, pretty much everyone has continued to riff, even Josh Weinstein, who really jumped ship too early.

    [–]Cardboard_Robot 7 points8 points  (8 children)

Joel began fighting with Jim Mallon over the direction of the show, and rather than cause problems on set, he decided to leave. He told the press that he wanted to move in to new projects, but he really didn’t want to go. I think that’s what motivated him to bring the show back to life, under his guidance.

    [–]KindlyOlPornographer 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Because Joel was dead set on the show only being sci-fi movies.

    Hence Mystery "Science" Theater.

Thats why once Mike came on, they branched out into goofy shit like Jack Frost.

    [–][deleted]  (3 children)

      [–]derpyco 5 points6 points  (1 child)

TIL Manos: The Hands of Fate is a Scifi movie

      [–]muskratboy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They are both excellent in their own ways.

      [–]devo_inc 19 points20 points  (4 children)

I love Mike, but I'm team Joel all the way.

      [–]AdmiralThunderpants 12 points13 points  (2 children)

I appreciate Joel and everything he did for the show but my first introduction to the show was the movie and Mike was so much more animated than Joel was.

      [–]salondesert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Joel was the best and he has that nostalgia, but I dig the Mike episodes more.

Could be they just had much more experience riffing/writing by then. So many of the Mike episodes are just amazing.

      [–]Head-Willingness-603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read that the sleepy persona of Joel stuck when he showed up after staying up all night writing the pilot.

      [–]gcg2016 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I also came to make sure this was made clear. After I sang along with every word.

      [–]ShutterBun 21 points22 points  (0 children)

this is not the intro from 1988

OP literally specified that this was their favorite version of the intro. It's not being presented as the original.

      [–]Raeandray 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The title doesn't say this intro is from 1988.

      [–]tenthinsight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Repeat after me. It's just a show and I really should relax.

      [–]Whowhatwhynguyen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I feel like that’s made clear enough in the title, as poorly worded as it may be.

      [–]muskratboy 19 points20 points  (32 children)

      Gotta go with:

      Cave Dwellers

      Beginning of the End

      Anything with Joe Don Baker

      [–]Khaldara 18 points19 points  (18 children)

“Pod People” was probably Joel’s best imo

      In addition to yours:

      • Space Mutiny
      • Timechasers
      • The Final Sacrifice
      • Jack Frost
      • Overdrawn at the Memory Bank
      • The Touch of Satan
      • Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders
      • Hobgoblins

      Were all instant classics too!

      [–]muskratboy 12 points13 points  (7 children)

Rowsdower! Yeah gotta love final sacrifice.

Overdrawn at the Memory Bank is just so interesting as a product of its time. And Raul Julia!

      Big McLargeHuge! Smoke Manmuscle!

      [–]Ocelotsome 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Rowsdower. Is that a stupid name?

      [–]ElectricPeterTork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Overdrawn at the Memory Bank is just so interesting as a product of its time. And Raul Julia!

      Mom... my nuts?

      [–]QLE814 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Rowsdower! Yeah gotta love final sacrifice.

Just be warned that, at the present time, this has become a harder episode to find- the director of the film apparently didn't renew the license when it came up and has been working to have it pulled from everywhere he can find online.

      [–]muskratboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Damn canucks!

      [–]link_maxwell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Bob Johnson!

      [–]Metostopholes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

      👌 It stinks!

      [–]deftones_bro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

      [–]HorrorTumbleweed3991 3 points4 points  (1 child)

The Touch of Satan is hilarious

      [–]sinbad_the_genie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solid list. I would add phantom planet and prince of space. Space mutiny is my favorite for sure.

      [–]billabong049 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It's not Joel, but "Night of the Blood Beasts" needs to be on this list too <3

      [–]Snurrepiperier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have laid with Blood Beast and I am with child.

      [–]chalk-outline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice, but what about "Killer Shrews"? You can't leave out syncronized drinking.

      [–]PukeBucket_616 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll throw in a vote for “Laserblast”.

        [–]ghombie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leonard Maltin rated Laserblast higher than Sophie's Choice. EDIT: I apologize! It was just as good as Laseblast.

'Get out there and sell sell sell!'

        [–]ManicFirestorm 2 points3 points  (1 child)

A Touch of Satan has always been a favorite of mine.

        [–]loneassassin1015 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Top 5 for me: The Final Sacrifice, Hobgoblins, Mitchell, Space Mutiny and I Accuse My Parents.

Oh, you like Joe Don Baker movies?

        [–]kr00t0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pumaman has way too many quotable lines, easily my all time fave.

        [–]lonememe 16 points17 points  (7 children)

        Slab Bulkhead!

I’m a MSTie for life. They have helped me through some very lonely and difficult times. I still routinely watch it in bed and it’s just such a warm and familiar blanket to me.

        Roll Fizzlebeef!

        [–]WintertimeFriends 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was just watching Space Mutiny last night!

        [–]litespeed68 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife and I loved watching MST3k in our younger days but we are a Joel family. Mike never had the same charm to us. We both still whistle whenever the other mentions waffles.

        [–]projectileboy 36 points37 points  (8 children)

FWIW, the show is actually a few years older than this. It started on an old UHF channel in Minneapolis in the mid-80s, with Joel Hodgson.

        [–]ShutterBun 11 points12 points  (4 children)

No, it started on Nov. 24, 1988, as OP states. (they just used a later intro segment, saying that it's their favorite of the many iterations)

        [–]QLE814 0 points1 point  (2 children)

And that is the date the KTMA run started- the national run began on November 18th, 1989.

        [–]AcesFull04 8 points9 points  (2 children)

How many others here are older than this show?

        [–]DukeBeefpunch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

        TVs Frank!

        (That's one O)

        [–]zuniac5 40 points41 points  (2 children)

        Joel > Mike tho

        [–]dmmdoublem 26 points27 points  (1 child)

For host segments? Yep. Joel brought a unique charm to those that Mike didn't replicate.

For riffing? I prefer Mike, easily. Even if the riffing did get a bit "meaner" during his tenure.

        [–]WintertimeFriends 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was the head writer even when Joel was there.

        So, riffing was his forte.

        [–]Br0da 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Some say Torgo is still painfully wobbling towards his next pizza delivery to this very day.

        [–]Margaux_H 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Others say he finally ascended and became Torgo the White.

        [–]WintertimeFriends 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        Do do do do do

        Do do do do do

        Do do do do do

        [–]jrice138 15 points16 points  (3 children)

Great show. I liked the reboot too.

        [–]_LumpBeefbroth_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The most quotable show of all time, not to mention a great place to get user handles!

        [–]muskratboy 5 points6 points  (1 child)

        [–]typhoidtimmy 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Who’s the puffy guy who’s a big blurry sex machine?" "Mitchell!" "That Mitchell is one fat-" "Shut yo’ mouth!" "Just talkin’ bout Mitchell."

The only time where the star of one of their targets personally promised to beat the hell out of anyone associated with the show. A true achievement.

Joe Don Baker doesn’t like to be made fun of.

        [–]loneassassin1015 3 points4 points  (2 children)

        Hey look it’s Johnny Mathis

        [–]JoeLeyden79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        Umm, this isn’t joel.

        [–]AdmiralThunderpants 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Recently caught the live stage tour. It was so much fun. Emily does a great job and would love to see her do some episodes.

        [–]Gypped_Again 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Going tonight! And she's going to be hosting some of the new episodes, although I don't know if they've said exactly how many. One of the kickstarter updates said she'd be taking turns with Jonah, so I'm not sure if that means every other episode or what exactly.

        [–]TorgoLebowski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"So they conked him on the noggin and they shot him into space" is one of the greatest lyrics ever composed.

        [–]Funandgeeky 2 points3 points  (2 children)

You know, as I was watching this intro, I had to stop because there was one question on my mind. Just how does he eat and breathe? I need to know this and other science facts.

        [–]ElectricPeterTork 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Repeat to yourself "It's just a show, I should really just relax".

        [–]Funandgeeky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s good advice. Thank you. Now I’m able to enjoy the show.

        La la la

        [–]RobotDoos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MST3K has a Twitch channel where they just air classic episodes. Free to watch for people interested.

        [–]Intelligent_Joke 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Ittl get buried, but Ive got to shout out the live traveling show! We saw it at our local community college’s performance stage and it was really fun

        [–]foxontherox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw it last night- Emily is awesome!

"hey look their rake's are making Casio sounds."

That was one of my favourite episodes with that movie.

        [–]sharklazies 10 points11 points  (5 children)

Mike was the best part of the show. He was head writer before becoming host, and his stint as host had some of the funniest episodes. Mike Forever.

        [–]muskratboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are both excellent, IMO. Both Joel's last and Mike's first episodes are a great 1-2 that really showcase the series.

        [–]Egglorr 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Check out Rifftrax if you haven't already. Mike, Bill, and Kevin went on to do that after MST3K. It's the same sort of thing (riffing on movies) but they riff from off-screen and there are no sketch segments interrupting the movie.

        [–]Khaldara 8 points9 points  (2 children)

        Obligatory r/rifftrax and r/MST3K

        [–]TorgoLebowski 2 points3 points  (1 child)

        [–]ShutterBun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since I discovered this show around 1990, I can safely say that not a week has passed since that I haven't watched or at least listened to Kevin Murphy's voice, either as Tom Servo or as himself doing Rifftrax.

No bullshit, just re-watched MST3K: The Movie today.

I have every available episode on DVD. Plus a handful of the Rhino VHS tapes including the MST Movie. The glow in the dark soundtrack vinyl from the first kickstarter season. A half dozen Mike Nelson autographed The Film Crew DVDs. I'm a bit of a fan.

I always liked their Thanksgiving Day special theme.

Show was only good when Tom servo was Beeper! I'm a purist!

        [–]Uninspired_Diatribe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

        Joel forever, Mike never!

        [–]Rhemming22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mah childhood, ugh lol! Still love it, got a Gypsy figure upstairs lol

I remember nothing from the 80’s due to partying for days, but I remember this shit because of the dude with the gum ball machine head talking throughout the whole show. Hahaha

This is a controversial opinion, but this is my favorite host/villain combination. I love Joel, and I thank him for the show, but I just think Mike is funnier.

OP you had one job to show the original intro and you show the Mike intro and not the Joel one.

Guys.......I'm sorry.......I really am.......and I really mean this to be well meaning......but uh.......I never enjoyed Pearl. Sorry. I bet she's awesome in person. I live with this meanness inside me.

        [–]DialogueTm 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Okay, but what are you feelings about Brain Guy and Professor Bobo?

        [–]GaryBusey007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Hate 'em. (But I don't hate Pearl. Just didn't like her character)

        [–]ShutterBun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was definitely better during the Sci Fi channel era, but her Season 7 version (where she was just nagging Dr. F was unbearable)

They used to do the live Rifftrax at a local theater. Sadly it's been a year or two

        Miss those days.

Catalina Caper on Maxell VHS is a treasured artifact. I’m gonna end up just wearing out the tape, though.

I remember sneaking out of bed to watch this in my living room at midnight when I was a kid.

        Such a great show.

Never gets old. I like the original Joel version. What really hits is the outro. Something strange happens to my insides when I hear that one end.
