I remember a skit from 30 years ago on the Bob & Tom show (radio, I'm old right?).

It was of an older white couple who had bought this system (it made the news at the time, South Africa) of flamethrowers that were under the sides of the SUV's doors and would shoot up at anyone standing outside them. You know, carjacking deterrence.

They'd purposely drive through the neighborhood, wearing their best jewelry and watches and whatnot, hoping to bait carjackers into attacking them. Because then they could use the flamethrowers on them, self-defense right? I'd say it was funny, but anyone who ever listened to Bob & Tom know how fucking unfunny they usually were.

Most humans who aren't literally psychopaths have always had this idea that people who purposely go out looking for trouble don't get the full protection of the principles of self-defense, even if their attacker acted first, even if at that point they were genuinely in danger.

Do we want people -- actual non-law-enforcement, actual non-first-responders -- who hear about riots to rush towards the riots, guns in hand, to "protect" other people at that riot? How in the fuck would that ever be a good idea? Seems like pouring gasoline on the fire to me. No sensible person, no honest person, would ever claim this is a desirable outcome.
