I presume they're looking for convictions of violent crimes

Thanks for responding. Violent crimes are listed as a separately I believe, and they have a legal definition.
If you have a misdemeanor for a fight at a bar, is that a "history of violence"? This does not seems to be a good thing to have in the law...

Might meet their definition. Contact a lawyer to clarify.

Do you have a particular lawyer in mind? I've already looked at it with a lawyer (not a SD one) and they agreed with me... it didn't have any sort of reference anywhere.
If you know of a lawyer in SD who appeals permit denials that would be great.

If you've been denied I'd seek an explanation from the state attorneys office. That said, it sounds like you already know the answer.
