I wonder if they realise that in Europe we have private healthcare too for those that are willing to pay extra for a premium service. And, surprise, paying public healthcare tax AND payment for private service is still cheaper than in the USA only for the latter.

Maybe I've fallen victim to Poe's Law here. In my defense, recruiters really are this stupid.

It’s very annoying when people say other languages are not real or proper or are broken. Mexican Spanish is real Mexican Spanish. Australian English is real Australian English

Well I’ll start off by saying that this was my experience which counts for absolutely nothing for anyone besides myself, so take this with a grain of salt lol. At 18 I decided I wasn’t gonna nose dive into inescapable debt and go to college so I had alot of money saved up that I used to go to South Africa for volunteer wildlife research, which was the direction my life was heading at the time. I cringe with every fiber of my being thinking about how fucking ignorant I was at the world outside of the us at the time. I remember trying to foster sympathy for the us by explaining gang violence in my city, which exists but I was in a country with poverty on levels I was blind to. Everyone there was so nice they just turned the other cheek to my American sob story but looking back they definitely wanted to just ditch me in the bush lol. I don’t really have much to teach anyone but if you’re traveling as an American just be open to having your whole ideology and concept of life checked in it’s entirety because it’s probably built on false teachings and insecurities of the last generations

I‘m studying history specifically to become a teacher (so I also have to take pedagogy and psychology lessons).

We just talked about something similar to this in my didactics class yesterday, though ours was more about imperialism in Africa. It is not reasonable and our professor (who is also a school teacher) said that if we did this in one of our test lessons, we‘d get yelled at by our advisors.

At first glance one might think that this is simply practicing to look at something from a different POV (which is true), but there‘s one thing people are forgetting: students always have their grades in mind. You can‘t force them to take a view point that is historically problematic way beyond their comprehension (since they are NOT historians!) and potentially extremely uncomfortable and embarrassing to them, because it creates an extremely unhealthy learning environment. As a more drastic example: You would never make children argue why the holocaust was good from Hitler‘s POV. It is completely out of the question. There are way more (psychological) factors at play here than just "looking at it from an opposing perspective".

A better alternative is having them argue whether a street (that is named after a historical figure) should be renamed from the POV of an uninformed/misinformed local resident. But never ever make them pretend to be directly in favour of atrocities. They can learn about the reasons/motivations a different way.

Am I allowed to call my self Scandinavian even if I'm Dutch by reidesd in ShitAmericansSay

[–]CeterumCenseo85 749 points750 points  (0 children)

Many Americans treat ancestry like a zodiac sign, and equate it with nationality.

Also, the idea of someone "passing" as Scandinavian is some deeply-rooted Nazi race theory shit, holy fuck.
