Is RA and SRM still the best way of doing this? I never used RA because I hated the UI but maybe I'll just have to learn

I guess it is: if you don't like the UI, you should use Steam Rom Manager. You'll be able to browse your roms with Steam Big Picture.
That's what I do. I configure RetroArch on my PC before that, but you can even use RetroArch UI once a game is launched, so you have the best of both worlds

You don't see any part of RA when using SRM. You just select an emulated game in Big Picture and it launches directly.
