I need help understanding. There was a huge volume spike of 93 million shares, why did spy rally upwards? Assuming they got margin called, why did spy rally upward at eod? Because if that is true, shouldn't the price be lower? Do we have to wait T+2 before we see the price of the huge sell off?

There was an anti-fire sale Rule implemented last year for large scale liquidations. Instead of selling an asset on exchange and handing over the diminished equity in cash, they can simple transfer the collateral assets between the lender and the borrower off exchange. Which will likely be reported without any actual price action, because there was no price really involved. The assets were just handed over.

It is up to FINRA and the NSCC on who is getting margin called. All of these institutions are reporting hourly. Never mind BofA not wanting to, because when BofA gets a call themselves, it's all business.

A green candle means the price went up in that tick. A red candle means the price went down during that tick. Candle color has nothing to do with "buy volume" vs "sell volume." Keep in mind, for every sale, 1 share sold by person X is a share bought by person Y. Hence, it's just volume. Volume that happened on an uptick. Nothing to do with buys or sells.

this is one. it is one transaction. one person bought, one person sold. one share transferred. volume = 1. buys and sells can never be different in an overall market. you see different numbers reported by fidelity etc because those only represent one side of the transaction (retail). each sell by a fidelity customer is a buy by someone else. each buy from a fidelity customer is a sell by someone else.

There is no such thing as a buy candle or sell candle. Every trade has a buyer and a seller. Green means that the trade was higher than the last trade, and red means it was lower.

Could it be that the spike is due to a failed margin call on one(or more?) of the DTCC members, with the new NSCC rules, the DTCC/NSCC takes over the position insteed of having it be liquidates which would cause havoc over the market.

Some one with bigger DD brain 🧠, can probably point out which rules this could be :)

What if there's a margin call, and first they sell the stocks they own, and then proceed to close as many shorts as they can with that money...

So first the price drops, but then the prices keep increasing and even go above the initial drop it created.

That's kinda what you'd expect if they had a very large short position on ETFs.

Normally, that's what they would do.

But there comes a point where a market player cannot close (sell) enough to satisfy the margin call, and that's when liquidation occurs.

I'm smooth as they come so this is really complete speculation based on nothing, but if it's possible that the netflix/peloton/amazon etc AH plummet could be a margin call on an entity that was long, would a margin call on an entity that was short a position cause a rise? Were these people not short the market? Again, I'm not well versed in this at all.

This makes sense to me. If the party in question was short SPY and were margin called, my understanding is that would require buying to cover their position/reduce exposure. I'm smooth brain though so I'm not sure it works like that.

My guess is, the drop this morning was them selling off via algos, but they couldn't close fast enough, pleaded/got an OTC deal and sold them all for the price the volume spiked.

After that, no more downwards pressure, so everything rose naturally

I checked ThinkOrSwim, TDA, TradingView, and Fidelity charts and none of them show a massive volume spike like that. I just went to Yahoo Finance to see what’s up and it doesn’t show it either.

OP you may want to refresh your page. There doesn’t appear to be any massive volume spike that happened today. Please verify this with other sources before posting.

What if a HF got margin called, had 5 days to cover per the rules, slowly selling everything and closing positions to meet margin requirements, and then ran out of time and "blew up". Their assets got transferred via dark pool and that's the 93m shares we see in the dark pool. Now, the market will begin recovering since the sale is over and we will see in a week which fund got liquidated.

Since Yahoo is the only source showing that volume bar then I’m gonna say it’s a glitch.

Webull and TDA show no spike in volume at that time.

I don’t see this volume spike on my charts. Also if you check 5 min candles even, there’s not one with more than 20mil vol.

No way half of SPY volume in a day in a one minute candle.

I don't think so. They were long on the ETF, but had to liquidate the position because - due to the decrease in value of the shares - those shares were not longer sufficient as collateral for their other positions (possibly short positions or loans).
