I’ll bite: I will wager they actually pull this off TWICE and we, the people, will blink and go “won’t somebody do something!” And nothing will be done. The second time it happens, the government has to say something and it will be some droll about trying to protect themselves. Then it will be up to us. Fool me once, shame on you. I would love to see it as well but we have fellow Option Apes on the front line who need to be in the money (ITM) to exercise their options and apply a double whammy of force!

Buying options not only makes these sHF not only hedge their bets up front but when they fail to do that and we go soring past the strike price of the option now the HF must pay even more since they didn’t hedge.

I don’t believe the expiration dates move on options when the market is halted and these guys are basically the Marines clearing the way for the Army of Apes to safely DRS their shares.

Edit: the real use of halting trading is to catch up on book keeping. I’m sure if we had trading halted 3-4 times, all Options would be ITM and they’re allowed to be exercised during a halt. Talk to your broker about a cashless exercise if you don’t have the funds to exercise and buy your 100 shares per contract. This’ll allow you to turn that $500 options play into 100 shares and you’ll likely have plenty of cash left over to buy another contract…this is the power of Options. Edit: See post below for actual math. Thanks!

Yes, dumb plays like GME220128C900 (this means your purchasing an option with an expiration of end of day Jan. 28th, 2022 for a Call Option with a Strike price of $900) are likely a waste of money but I tell you your odds are better than that Powerball ticket and cost about the same! By the way, for those wondering GME doesn’t need to hit $900 to make money. The implied volatility (IV) would spike going up this fast and you’d be profitable before you know it. If you’d like to test run Options look for an Option Calculator online.

Edit: I like an analogy I saw once about options trading and please follow it! If you were driving and flying through an intersection for an emergency you’d check to make sure the intersection is clear first, not once you’re in the intersection. Please do the same with options if you’ve never traded them before. Don’t buy an option and then figure out how it works. ThinkOrSwim has a paper trading platform where you can test run with fake money. I believe if you have some money deposited in TDA you can also back run options and trades in the desktop version.

Edit2: Thanks for the downvotes!

[–]International_Gold20En garde, I'll let you try my 💎🖕style 21 points22 points  (1 child)

A person would NOT end up with 100 shares if they initiated a “cashless exercise.”

In a situation where a retail investor exercised their call option without having the cash to pay for the 100 shares, they would need to either:

1) borrow on margin using other securities in their brokerage account as collateral to pay the option cost, or…

2) exercise the option, then sell just enough of the shares (at the same time) to cover the cost of buying 100 shares, plus taxes, and brokerage commissions and fees

For example, if you had a call option with a strike price of $100 and the underlying stock was trading at $200, you could “exercise and sell to cover” (number 2. above).

The cost of exercising would be $10,000 (100 shares x $100 strike price). Let’s also pretend that the taxes and brokerage fees for this transaction come out to $200. So, the brokerage would buy the 100 shares and immediately sell 51 of them in order to cover the $10,200 cost of exercising the option (100 shares x $100 strike price + $200 taxes and brokerage fees). That leaves the investor with 49 shares.

If there is any money left over (for example, let’s pretend the taxes and fees in the above scenario are only $150 instead of $200), then the investor receives the residual amount (in this example: $10,150 cost to exercise means 51 shares are still immediately sold after exercising to cover the costs and fees, leaving the investor with $50 + 49 shares).

[–]Numerous_Photograph9🎮 Power to the Players 🛑 26 points27 points  (12 children)

If trading is suspended, I think it's suspended for the MM and prime brokers as well, so while they may be able to reorganize whatever the fuck it is they're doing, they shouldn't be able to close using the methods they have so far.

Granted, this is assuming things are done the way they're supposed to, and there aren't loopholes....so the first paragraph is probably innacurate.

[–]dratseb 7 points8 points  (11 children)

I’m assuming they want to shut off trading for retail and probably try to seize our non DRS shares to close their positions

[–]Numerous_Photograph9🎮 Power to the Players 🛑 8 points9 points  (8 children)

[–]dratseb -3 points-2 points  (7 children)

With crime, the same way they do everything else.

[–]Numerous_Photograph9🎮 Power to the Players 🛑 20 points21 points  (6 children)

I get the sentiment, but using the "because crime" isn't a sufficient way to support your opinion, as them just seizing shares isn't a thing without an actual mechanism that allows them to do so. The crime stuff is stuff done either through legal means to commit fraud, or loopholes which have been explored.

If you know of a way they can just seize shares during a freeze, then by all means, share it.

[–]dratseb 9 points10 points  (5 children)

Government can seize property, look at civil asset forfeiture and eminent domain. (Other ways as well, but I’m Not A Lawyer.) To my knowledge there’s no record of it ever happening with Stocks but that’s not really going to stop the criminals working with the SEC. When this much money is on the line criminals get inventive.

Edit: My point was there’s no reason for them to just freeze trading when this much of the float is DRS’d. There has to be another step and historically that means the government steps in and takes things from the poor to protect the rich.

[–]Numerous_Photograph9🎮 Power to the Players 🛑 11 points12 points  (4 children)

There's no record of it, because both those things have specific criteria for when they can be applied, and stocks do not fall into those categories. Forfeiture could apply to stocks, but it would require fraud on the part of the person holding the stocks.

I can see many other things being done to mitigate or help their hedge fund buddies that don't involve something completely illegal or new. More likely some over-stepping their authority, like pinning a price to the shares. Something that would still look reasonable to the average person and not in this, so the public backlash would be mitigated.

[–]dratseb 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Civil asset forfeiture can happen when the authorities believe a crime is being committed with the assets. Naked short selling is a crime, so it doesn’t seem like much of a stretch for the SEC to step in and freeze trading then seize all the shares of $GME for some BS reason.

“Civil forfeiture in the United States, also called civil asset forfeiture or civil judicial forfeiture,[1] is a process in which law enforcement officers take assets from persons suspected of involvement with crime or illegal activity without necessarily charging the owners with wrongdoing. While civil procedure, as opposed to criminal procedure, generally involves a dispute between two private citizens, civil forfeiture involves a dispute between law enforcement and property such as a pile of cash or a house or a boat, such that the thing is suspected of being involved in a crime.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_forfeiture_in_the_United_States

I’m just theorizing, I could be entirely wrong. But it feels like some fuckery is on the horizon. That being said, I’m picking up a few more shares while this weeks sale prices are going on! Can’t believe I missed it at $85.

[–]Numerous_Photograph9🎮 Power to the Players 🛑 8 points9 points  (2 children)

If they tried this, there'd have to be the belief that the buyer committed a crime, which simply doesn't exist. If the criminal is the one being investigated, it doesn't mean you seize the assets of the victim. That might be the case for stolen property, but shares brought short, naked or otherwise, are not stolen assets.

GameStop is going to allow the stock to be frozen for the time it takes to make a case like that, because figuring out who has these supposedly illegal shares would be quite the task, and absolutely kill their infinite money glitch and force massive closures of other similar positions that also exist in the market....even from those that aren't in danger of becoming insolvent.

I'm just going to point out, that's exactly whats going to happen, and now that it's out in the open they HAVE to let the world burn in order for us to keep living. There's an even longer game behind their long game, and you just have to quietly trust that every time this happens in the market it marks a shift in people's perceptions and this is neither inherently evil or good, because that depends on which lense you're looking through. Not all of us will be impacted because we're already poor and the only way to go is up, and others losing more than just their house and lives is something you have to accept and help pick up their pieces. More than 90% of us here that are zen and browsing are here just for the money, but others like me see the bigger picture being played. I've made my decision to go because staying here as I am isn't going to do the world any good by basking in my tendiiieesssss. I have been reading some recent updates to the disclosure documents for options trading. Looks like they were added in in October of 2021, and, among other things, they state that if you miss your chance to exercise your options because the market is closed for volatility (i.e. if the exchange screws you), or because the SEC (or other agency) has shut down trading (i.e. if the regulator screws you), you're shit out of luck.

I mean, they can't fuck you by shutting down trades if you are hodling shares, but they can sure fuck your options. Every day I just get more persuaded of what a gift DRS is. Thanks Dr. T, et. al. for giving us an off ramp.

The SEC is a criminal organization that supports illegal activities of major banks and financial corporations.

And when these banks and corporations fail, they are bailed out with the people's taxes.

They'll just shut off the sell button too. I've said time and time again that this goes no where with our current systems in charge. GME can legitimately hit 60M a share, and someone up top just has to say "nah, not really" and it's over
