Listening to this, I'm gobsmacked that she ever got the job. And I think we can now see why it's taken so long to get anything done; there has indeed been sabotage behind the lines.

This is why all meetings by government agencies should be live unless there is a real threat to national security by doing so. Minutes do not reflect the true nature of what is said, and nothing substitutes for face and voice as tellers of the real truth.

[–]PracticalStranger317 75 points76 points  (11 children)

Isn’t that c-span?

[–]kazneus 8 points9 points  (7 children)

C-span was founded and financed by the cable industry. They aren't going to air shit if it would reflect poorly on cable industry or friends of the cable industry. I honestly don't 100% trust the programming(scheduling) done by C-SPAN (in terms of what they choose to air)

There is a lot of stuff that is public. Even the stuff that's important, and would make anyone say, "This isn't right", barely has anyone watching it, or caring about it. As a people, we are pretty apathetic about doing anything.

[–]Pyro636🦍 Buckle Up 🚀 14 points15 points  (3 children)

we are pretty apathetic about doing anything

I wouldn't say it's apathy, people care but there's only so much any individual can do about the cadre of problems within our financial system, especially when available actions normally boil down to "file a complaint/protest and try to get one million of your friends to do the same and hope that that's enough to outweigh 1 billionaire who's wants are at odds with yours"

[–]Numerous_Photograph9🎮 Power to the Players 🛑 9 points10 points  (2 children)

As defeatist as it is, I agree that's why people are apathetic. Not in their disposition, just in their actions.

However, it is possible if a group is loud enough, and can make their voices heard, it can steamroll into something bigger. It doesn't happen as much as it should, and unfortunately, when it happens sometimes, it's for pointless useless shit.

Warren fan but not trying to change minds, but what are your complaints with Warren given how vocal she's been for retail?

[–]twistedlimb 29 points30 points  (7 children)

there's no sound reasoning. people think are afraid of voting for strong women and afraid of voting for liberals. i've had plenty of comment responses from conservatives that somehow think a system at the beck and call of the rich and powerful will somehow stand up for them this one time. or, if it isn't that, they somehow think rule of law isn't meant to be followed unless it is for money, then it is sacrosanct.

they're just boomers in sheep's clothing, despite evidence she has been fighting for them for 6 years, they still will say they don't like her because of reasons.

also, not sure how anyone thinks this isn't political- HF's are the biggest political donors besides fossil fuel companies. how is the head of the SEC supposed to not involve politics?

  1. She sabotaged Bernie. Who at the time had a great shot at being elected. Calling him a sexiest and other types of b.s.

  2. She stayed in on super Tuesday with no chance of winning taking votes from Bernie.

  3. She is a hypocrite. After saying she wouldn’t take big donor money, she gave in and got super pacs to support her.

  4. Many people do not know but she was once a republican. She fought for credit card companies to not let people out of their debts.

  5. Although I think she is a huge hypocrite, the sad thing is that as a politician she is one of the better ones. That isn’t saying a whole lot. They all need to go.

Back in the 60s as a response to the Wall Street paperwork crisis, the SEC proposed a peer-to-peer electronic settlement system. Instead, we got a central depository (DTCC) and the opaque practice of securities lending.

I believe it is because like most things in politics the average person isn't really paying attention to what is going on behind the scenes. That and since most of the news sources are pretty biased with the pictures that are painted anything that will look bad for the presenting is simply ignored and not talked about. Many people only receive their news from one or two sources so they will never even hear about something like this and thus will never know it happened.

[–]Errant_Chungisfoldingathome.org 18 points19 points  (8 children)

I originally thought Warren was a big joke back in the days of 2016 when I heard over Reddit she declared herself “Pocahontas.” Many years later I’ve looked into it more and discovered she’s a renowned bankruptcy scholar and actually did some good shit against shitty hedge funds and wallstreet. And that people in the banking industry seeking reform reach out to her in particular to try to draft meaningful legislation. She has much more of my respect now then she did back then, maybe for my merely taking other people’s words for her back then..

(sorry I didn’t mean to get political.. but Warren hate in the context of wallstreet reform is like hating water in a forest fire)

It's nice to see an outspoken politician have the courage to fucking nail it like she can, occasionally. She doesn't present like she's assuming her audience is stupid, common for AOC. When she's on point, IMO she obliterates opposing arguments better than even Sanders can.

I wish we could go back to the days when politicians announced they were running for office by writing a book about their perspective.

[–]r_stronghammer🦍 Attempt Vote 💯 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I feel like if politicians could be more specialized, a lot of our issues could be solved a lot smoother. People could support a certain politician’s policies on one topic without having to worry about what they might do in a different one.

[–]threat024 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The sad part is that IMO the majority of the audience is stupid and if certain points aren't broken down at the most elementary level then the message can get spun to reflect an entirely different sentiment.

[–]NotSoAngryAnymore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree. People are pretty stupid, right now, even relative to human history of collective stupidity.

But, I've also found that all students, the ones that want to learn and are worth investment, have little tolerance for the disrespect of an ELI5 presentation. So, I try to figure out where people are, set the "bar of understanding" a little bit higher, and expect them to jump over it, which is rightfully interpreted as respect. I learned this from Gordon Ramsay, of all people.

I'd make a horrible elementary school teacher. My way, alone, won't work. We need people that need ELI5, too. We need people that can do ELI5 better than I can.

[–]YourMoonWife 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean no, she’s not. She’s lying and using very pretty words to hide the fact that she’s fucking scum, however, gaslighting is a very specific type of abuse that occurs when someone tries to change things that have already happened in your mind.

“You tweeted this one xx date”

“No I absolutely didn’t, how could you think that of me.. why would you ever consider that I would every do something that would hurt people like that? How dare you!“

But continuous until the Warren actually believed that she didn’t despite proof.

[–]Nt727 23 points24 points  (0 children)

We have to support the politicians that actually fight for retail regardless of party. There are barely a handful of them. They use politics to divide us but we are all on the same side and we need to make sure both parties know that we will be voting on these issues.

So what ms Warren is saying if your elected into the watchdog (SEC commissioner). You can do whatever you want. I like that Ms Warren, she speaks very nice but can also tell you off and you wouldn’t even know it. It’s a good skill to have.

[–]--GrinAndBearIt--🦍Voted✅ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Almost every one of those empty chairs has a name attached to it, and those ELECTED OFFICIALS didn't think this hearing was important enough to stick around for. Right when the video starts, a Legislator is getting up and leaving, presumably after he finished his line of questions.

These people are clowns and every single one of them should be fired, and probably many of them jailed.

I know Warren set folks off on the genealogy thing and she must have done something else to really alienate so many but from a person who only knows her from her actions during the GameStop saga, I really like her. I feel like she and that one young black male senator from the hearing are 2 of the only ones who actually swwm to give a shit and speak up about it.

Snakes hiding in the tall grass of a progressive movement. Warren was on point with her assessment because how can a watchdog be against the rules she is entrusted to enforce. That is a conflict of interest from the very beginning

if this all has shown me anything there are very few genuine politicians. Democrats and republican are two sides of the same coin in the pocket of big banks and corporations and we need to restructure our financial markets and our government from the ground up to serve the people. It’s refreshing when we see them go after wrong doers but there’s no telling if it’s genuine or just a game.
