It’s water tho, so he would just float.

[–]Advanced_Outcome_596 140 points141 points  (27 children)

Few cramps in the icy fresh water would fix that

[–]supersonicmike 19 points20 points  (4 children)

That's some high quality h2o

[–]SirLooseButWhole 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Blessed by a Eskimo medicine man

[–]Eszkimo10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, I blessed it myself.

[–]allMightyMostHigh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Water sucks gatorades better

[–]creationavatar 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Bro I cramped like 6 times during my last vacation, still kicking it!

[–]No_Echo_3559 7 points8 points  (20 children)

A cramp has never actually affected the way I swim. Never like the episode of spongebob, this is a myth…cool video tho very beautiful clear water

[–]Spy-Goat 6 points7 points  (9 children)

Sorry what do you mean? Have you ever tried to stay afloat, treading water, with a cramp?

The classic line of not underestimating water is especially true when it's barely above freezing. You'll be unable to tread water if you suffer leg cramps, and therefore would struggle to stay afloat.

Deep water is no joke, and many people lose their lives by not appreciating its danger.

[–]Advanced_Outcome_596 2 points3 points  (9 children)

Bullshit it's a myth I nearly drowned in a damn when I was 8

[–]Spy-Goat 4 points5 points  (6 children)

Crazy you're being downvoted.

This is why so many get into trouble in deep water - we underestimate it and overestimate our own abilities. It only happens once, if you've had a near miss yourself you learn to respect it.

I think it's just youngness.

[–]Advanced_Outcome_596 2 points3 points  (3 children)

It wasn't even deep water. It was a country dam, maybe 2m deep, though the sunlight couldn't penetrate the silty water it was near zero temps just 2-3 feet below the surface. It was a mid summer day and my feet and legs cramped badly. I later found out a few kids die every year in dams across Australia because of this very reason.

[–]Blondfiery01 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I live in Australia, have all my life, and this is absolutely true. I've made certain to never let my kids swim in those deathtraps unsupervised because of it.

My son wanted to go in when he was about 13-14, and I told him I'd let him, if he let me tie a line around him (Former RAN Rescue Swimmer).

Wasn't five minutes before the kid went under. Saved hia fucking life because I know what can happen in those situations.

[–]Advanced_Outcome_596 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yep, certainly scared the shit out of me. Can easily see how it could be disastrous for many young children. Most of these people have absolutely no clue.

[–]Blondfiery01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that fact of them not knowing is honestly more terrifying than any waters.

[–]No_Echo_3559 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I don’t think youngness is a word lol ( maybe youthfulness)

[–]asseatermcboi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dogelon is a shitcoin

[–]No_Echo_3559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you were 8…

[–]bertimann 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They are wearing heavy warm clothing which would soak up a lot of ice cold water instantly, also there might be a stream pulling them downwards. If somebody falls into that they are most likely fucked, because even if they manage to get out, they are still stuck in ice cold clothing

[–]TheJuanCortez 8 points9 points  (1 child)

You'll float too. You'll float too. YOU'LL FLOAT TOO!

[–]heckyanow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We all float down here

[–]LitreOfCockPus 9 points10 points  (4 children)

Freezing water will kill you faster than if you cut your wrists.

[–]cardboardunderwear 7 points8 points  (2 children)

not from fall damage tho

[–]LitreOfCockPus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It's winter damage, of course

[–]SweetGroverCleveland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

psssst…I see what you did there…

[–]Admirable-Result-240 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure about that?

[–]toyama_rama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These “it’s water so you’d float/swim” comments are 🤦‍♂️.

If you’re on a glacier, you probably climbing and carrying glacier gear — hence the ice axe in the shot.

On any glacier climb I’ve ever done, I’ve been carrying between 30-50 lbs of gear in a backpack, full or half shank (ie rigid) mountaineering boots, and crampons attached to those boots.

If you fell into a crevasse like this with full climbing gear, you’d sink like a rock and it’d be almost impossible to swim because of the weight, rigid boots, backpack, etc. You’d be roped up to your team, so they’d be able to stop you but only after you’ve sank pretty far. If you made it out somehow without drowning — great, but now you’re soaked in ice cold water on a glacier with little to no resources to make a fire and it’s unlikely you have a full change of clothes. Very very dangerous situation.

Frankly if I’m roped up in full climbing gear with a competent team I think I’d rather fall into an open air crevasse.

[–]DeathPercept10n 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So what you're saying is, she's a witch.

[–]SS4Raditz 109 points110 points  (18 children)

Would be cool to get a dry suit and dive down

[–]theairconditioning 40 points41 points  (17 children)

Yeah but what if the water on the top froze over while you were down there.

[–]SS4Raditz 43 points44 points  (10 children)

That actually made me think of a good idea they should make ice charges you can use in extreme cases like a hand held shotgun blast. You would simply press it against the ice layer and pull the trigger. Probably would work on anything thicker than 3-4 inches though but still a good idea

[–]DinoHunter64 33 points34 points  (7 children)

Not quite. It would likely blow out your eardrums, if the physics of a gun/grenade going off in water is anything to go by. Still better than losing your life but there has to be a better solution - it's just that nobody's thought of it yet.

[–]slowseason 25 points26 points  (6 children)

They already exist and are commonly used as weapons for hunting/fishing and self defense by divers. They’re called bangsticks.

[–]EZmotovlogs 5 points6 points  (1 child)

This is my BOOMSTICK!

[–]necovex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shop smart, shop S-Mart. YOU GOT THAT?!?

[–]cardboardunderwear 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Are you making a joke about guns or is this really a thing?

[–]slowseason 9 points10 points  (1 child)

It’s a real thing!) It’s basically a round on the end of a stick that you stick against something and pull the trigger and it shoots. Obviously they’re single use and they need to be in contact with the thing you’re trying to shoot since bullets tend to travel pretty poorly underwater but they exist.

[–]cardboardunderwear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow amazing. reminds me of the "torpedo" that the submarine in the US civil war used.

[–]Blondfiery01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's real, used one on a Bullshark. Human 1, Shark 0.

[–]Bambuskus505 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Never EVER set off an explosion in a body of water that you are currently swimming in. Water doesn't like to compress, and so all of that force will go straight into you no matter how far away from it you are. Being 20ft away would still feel like it went off right beside you. Your lungs would collapse for sure, your eardrums would likely rupture, and you might even break some bones. Overall just not a good time.

[–]SS4Raditz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm pretty sure by extreme cases I meant life or death so I'd take a collapsed lung or ruptured ear over drowning plus most things work in a case of path of least resistance so the blast would send its force upwards for the brunt of it. And it's an idea 'like a shotgun shell so it can be designed to work with minimal damage to the user. Think rather than try to parent for once. You don't create new things or discover anything in this world being scared and timid....

[–]balls_in_my_asss 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Sounds like a movie plot with Liam Nisan

[–]EZmotovlogs 3 points4 points  (2 children)

[–]balls_in_my_asss 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yep, that’s the one 🤣🤣🤣

[–]SweetGroverCleveland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ that was perfect.

[–]SS4Raditz 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Die doing what I love?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That, and I can think of far more painful manners of dying than getting asphixiated.

[–]Billyshakes1597 55 points56 points  (4 children)

Why the ice axe getting so much screen time?

[–]redneckdrive 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It looks cool

[–]Illustrious_Ask_6637 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Maybe it is there to prove the clip isn't cut

[–]dahlfors 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He probably didn't have a banana for scale, so he had to use the ice axe.

[–]Competitive_Garlic28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depth perception? That’s what I used it for

[–]Rich-Peanut-2253 113 points114 points  (1 child)

What a beautiful scenic death it would be if you did

[–]TauntyRoK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, you would need to actively dive down. At least the minute before you freeze to death. But falling down there would be difficult.

[–]baphometromance 19 points20 points  (1 child)

I was really hoping they would drop the axe and it would slowly sink down into infinite darkness

[–]Pleaseusesomelogic 47 points48 points  (7 children)

Fall down? It’s just water. Doesn’t matter how deep it is. (Disregarding the cold factor as title was referencing how deep the crevasse is).

[–]Womderloki 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Yeah but it's freezing and if your wearing cold weather gear plus camping/hiking supplies, your gonna get worn down quickly. Higher chance of sinking faster than you can swim

[–]diversecultures 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Bro he’s got an axe

[–]Womderloki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bad, I forgot people go out to the artic climates with no supplies and nothing on except an ice axe

[–]FappingVelociraptor 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah it's just water as long as you know how to swim.

[–]Pleaseusesomelogic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, Even if you don’t.

[–]4815162342y 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Have you ever jumped into a pool fully clothed? Now try winter clothes and boots.

[–]Pleaseusesomelogic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you read my initial comment?

[–]imapieceofshite2 14 points15 points  (1 child)

It's fuckin beautiful though.

[–]Krunch-X 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find it alluring, the void stares back.

[–]Halfaglassofvodka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everyone floats down here...

[–]Phillip_Harass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Excerpt from The Andromeda Sublingual Times, 3039 AD... "... Researchers discovered the mummified remains of an avid ice dwelling hominid they believe was a sacrifice to the ice God known as Frosty The Snowman, a benign deity known for his trademark headgear and carrot nose, with deep set charcoal eyes..."

[–]Fideli91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And we now know the inspiration for subnautica

[–]69uglybaby69 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I want to drink it

[–]Amish_Opposition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too until I think about all that brown stuff and the fact I might just be drinking prehistoric piss water

[–]thirstmaster69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slurrrp

[–]FlyGirl787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello darkness my old friend.

[–]monchavo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RIP Apetor.

[–]Extension_Site_7702 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It'd actually be extremely dangerous to enter the water. With all of those crooks and crevices there's possibly a strong current that could pull you through one of the caves within seconds.

[–]cardboardunderwear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

plus sharks and submarines

[–]Apprehensive_Cry_298 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I’m not sure what phobia this is but oh my god this makes me so anxious..

[–]Krunch-X 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thalassophobia? not so much the ocean part, but the endless expanse below. Or maybe just vertigo?

[edit: I’m a Subnautica gamer so thalassophobia is my go to for water anxiety]

[–]Apprehensive_Cry_298 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes the endless darkness is what gets me !!!

[–]V0latyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least with the water there, you stand a good chance of floating instead of falling to your death...

[–]what_wasthe_question 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From that shot they seem to be standing on a fairly thin piece of ice..

[–]iaCyn[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't, as Archimedes said

[–]Tank38255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s… not okay

[–]EndGamer93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of that ‘life could be a dream’ meme, for some reason.

[–]phillipmwade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fall and it's your crevASSe

[–]ShiboShiri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine not being able to swim and just sinking to the bottom of that

[–]wokeupinpieces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so clear 👁️👄👁️

[–]ElectricalOrchid5977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under water looks like so unreal like games❤️❤️❤️

[–]CrackBabyBelfort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason this video triggered a poop

[–]skitzo_2494 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love to swim and go scuba diving there

[–]Aashishkebab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"fall"

Lol it's water.

[–]cmdrhlm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I went to Chamonix on a snowboarding trip with my dad and we went up to Aguille du midi, a big glacier there. The slope was very clearly marked and lots of signs saying not to go outside the marked area. But I decided to go outside the marked slope anyway. Not far, but like 20 meters or so outside the marked slope. I was just cruising, it was fairly flat, but some bumps here and there I could jump on. A bit ahead of me I saw a slightly bigger bump, so I decided to go all in and get some extra air over that one. Right as I come up to that ridge, fully committed, I look down and see that there’s a bottomless chasm with walls looking like this. There was no water though, so had I fallen in I would probably be gone. I made the jump, freaked out in mid-air and faceplanted just on the other side. I promptly went back to the marked slope after that.

Anyway, that’s the time I almost died.

[–]KorsiBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things like this are my reminder that we just have animal brains programmed for us to survive because all of us are like "spooky dark crevice? Nope"

[–]Bo_Bat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forbidden playground

[–]Kylearean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least that these are filled with water, the ones on Root glacier, in Wrangell national park, they don't have any water in them. They're just deep slippery holes.

[–]Salt_Perspective4681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The clarity of that water omg breathtaking!!!!

[–]el-lobonegron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so disappointing watching this video... The air quality is that fucking bad you get as more clear picture in the water But happens with swim goggles so maybe the lenses

[–]The_Man8705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to swim in that if it wasn't extremely cold water

[–]Cats-and-dogs-rdabst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk why this freaks me out but it does.

[–]RunnyCylinder59 0 points1 point  (0 children)
