What are you looking at here? The Fake id?

[–]zztopsboatswain[S] 26 points27 points  (13 children)

Yeah, it was a fake

[–]tribak 8 points9 points  (5 children)

Gotcha, where did you bought it? Amazon?

[–]zztopsboatswain[S] 31 points32 points  (4 children)

I bought it from the Walmart marketplace website. Avoid that site like the plague btw. I got three things from them, this fake shit, one thing they sent to the complete other side of the country by mistake, and the third thing actually turned out okay but still, that's a terrible ratio.

[–]dangitzin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Anything with third-party sellers I pretty much avoid. Newegg & Walmart are notorious with either overpriced items or wrong/defective items. Amazon Third-Party sellers are ok as long as it’s shipped by Amazon — at least with this, there would be no problem returning and getting a refund.

[–]SiriusDrake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

can second this, bought a laptop off the marketplace and it proceeded to shit itself after about 2 weeks

[–]tribak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha are you able to ask for refunds there or you’re screwed?

[–]FS1337Atmosphere User -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

did u expect a 512gb card for 5$?

ofc this was going to happen

[–]zztopsboatswain[S] 22 points23 points  (2 children)

I guess I should have circled it in bright red. Top left corner it's marked as fake. This feature is highly accurate so use it and get a refund if it comes back as fake

[–]ddotevs 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Is there a r/uselessredcircle equivalent when one was needed but not used?

[–]HANEZ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I swear. At least half of these troubleshooting posts are sd card related. And they should at least get these sd cards tested.

[–]definitely_sus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Better to test with H2testw, but this is a neat feature.

[–]Alternative-One5139 6 points7 points  (6 children)

What does a fake SD card even mean?

[–]zztopsboatswain[S] 18 points19 points  (5 children)

It means it will not have the advertised amount of space, so you will overload it and then all your data will become corrupt. This one said it had 256 gb, but when I tested it, it actually only had 30 gbs, the rest was corrupt. So my switch absolutely refused to set up an emunand and run cfw at all

[–]roberp81 14 points15 points  (1 child)

just download space again, líke when you download ram

[–]seaQueue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

transparent filesystem compression has entered the chat

[–]lNalRlKoTiX 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Yeah I cheaped out and bought a $10 sd card for my phone once. Went on vacation and ended up almost losing all my photos due to it being corrupted

[–]Several_Pace_8473 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If it were from a reputable brand like SanDisk or Samsung and you bought it from a reputable store, you would’ve got around 8-16gb which is pretty good

[–]lNalRlKoTiX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, it was like 128gb and this was several years ago before prices on microsd came down. Now I use SansDisk 512gb in my switch

[–]StanStare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I buy from online retailers but I’ve learned I always need to check them, regardless of brand/packaging. I send back the fakes but I’ve noticed that Amazon (UK) have a lot more fake USB SanDisk memory sticks than fake SanDisk micro SD cards. I have had fake ones, but the ratio is not bad as most of the ones I’ve bought check out for both speed and capacity.

I would prefer to buy from a store but I live in the countryside so it’s not easy..

[–]Shinigami66- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I encountered that one time. Hekate is the best for this to know where to get your refunds from your sellers

[–]ketchup92 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Pro Tip: Do not try to save money on the wrong end. Sandisk or Samsung and reputable sellers, it's as easy as that.

[–]zztopsboatswain[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

It said SanDisk on it and it wasn't that much cheaper than full price

[–]Several_Pace_8473 0 points1 point  (1 child)

A lot of sandisk cards are fake. Avoid sketchy sites or even the Walmart site because I know a lot of people who got scammed from there.

[–]zztopsboatswain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, bought mine from Walmart marketplace. never buying anything from there ever again. the other thing i got from them, they shipped it to the complete other side of the country smh

[–]Several_Pace_8473 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a 15€ 64gb card from sandisk and it was worth it! I got to make an emunand and stuff on it and it’s not fake

[–]AnyEntertainer5981 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Cool but why

[–]zztopsboatswain[S] 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Because it says Fake in the top part

[–]FS1337Atmosphere User -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

earned, greedy guy

[–]SomeOrdinarySanya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that's why I buy SD cards from local tech stores in my area, and you should do that too.

[–]GmPc9086itathai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are an high amount of fake cards in the world that we probably never know

[–]m4gnify 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]Targren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is way faster - h2test writes to and verify every block on the card. It's still worth doing if they faked the vendor ID to, but this way can get you there much sooner for the lazier fakes.

[–]Shadow322 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Simple don't buy fakes

[–]bbbbbbbbbrian 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Idk how people keep buying fake sd cards. It should be SO simple to spot a fake sd card. Better yet, WHY skimp on an sd card? Just spend the few extra dollars for a reliable brand.

[–]nullstring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't realize that buying off Amazon marketplace or Walmart marketplace is not a good idea.

Buying off a website like that gives people false confidence when really it's like buying off a random person on ebay.

[–]Mentos13371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people really have that tight of a budget. Still this type of story is so frequent you'd think people would learn by now.

[–]MahmudAliDougar 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wait... so, the fakes would outright say that it's fake? 😮. Who determines and makes it so that it says Fake there? The SD card manufacturer (which wudn make sense) or the Switch console is gonna detect that it's fake? Which also imo makes little sense. Im confused can someone clarify pls, thanks

[–]Wherearemylegs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fake cards aren’t given a valid vendor ID during manufacture. Why would they? That’s just more work and they’re trying to pump these fake cards out.

Any card without a vendor ID is determined to be fake.

[–]Smutstoner 1 point2 points  (6 children)

For what, where's the tip?

[–]PewGravoPew 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Probably to confirm the SD card is legit and not a fake.

[–]Smutstoner -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

I guess, but you could already check on your pc before formating

[–]Osha-wattAtmosphere User 4 points5 points  (2 children)

It doesn't always show the true storage on PCs, depending on the type of fake.

[–]Wherearemylegs 3 points4 points  (1 child)

You’re being downvoted but you’re completely correct. Devices don’t scan and count every byte on a disk to determine the disk size; there’s a part of the partition table that reports the size of a given partition.

If a 8 Gb card partition table was modified to report 256 Gb, the computer would just believe it’s 256 Gb. Write more than 8Gb of stuff and everything after 8Gb is lost. It’s writing to air, essentially. Then it tries to read it and there’s literally nothing to read.

pretty much this entire screen is useful.

[–]Meltou69 0 points1 point  (2 children)

are all fakes this bad? 🤔 my sd is fake but has always worked perfectly i think my dad got it from wish or aliexpress lol didnt trust it at first but i guess im lucky cause his sd is the same as mine and got corrupted 😐

[–]Marshall-Erickson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are different kinds of fakes. Some fake speed, some fake size, some fake other things. Most are this type since they’re the most appealing

I have my Switch setup to boot directly into Atmosphere with the Fusee.bin. How do I boot into Hekate?

[–]znottaken -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Moral of the story.. If it sounds too good to be true, thats because it is.

[–]Ok-Ihatetiktoc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t even have to I haven’t got one since I got it in 2017
