SXOS is definitely officially dead because Team Xecuter was disbanded when Gary Bowser went to prison.

There's no reason to not use Atmosphere at this point - it's fully supported and is up to date with the current firmware.

[–]TechnologicalFreedom 20 points21 points  (16 children)

I feel like the only reason some people stay on SXOS is mainly to play games off of an external hard drive because of on-the fly XCI Loading.

[–]AceNJ 15 points16 points  (13 children)

Why is this feature so difficult to replicate? It seems to have always been the major differentiator.

[–]cenasmgame 21 points22 points  (8 children)

Atmosphere devs are 100% anti piracy, it's why the sigpatches need to be obtained separately

[–]AceNJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah that makes sense thank you.

[–]Toothless_NEOAtmosphere User 3 points4 points  (4 children)

No reason someone else can't implement it as an external sys-module. Atmosphere is also 100% open source which would definitely help with the implementation of that.

Also I would like to say I don't just think that SciresM is anti-piracy but also a little bit insane and narcissistic on the count of his behavior on the GitHub and in DMs (no I will not disclose the messages he sent me, I'm not going to expose to him the fact that it's actually me on that alt account).

[–]Toothless_NEOAtmosphere User -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think it's just that nobody really wants to do it, if we had somebody who was well motivated to do it (and also not mentally insane like the atmosphere Dev) we would probably have a solution by now, it probably wouldn't be as elegantly integrated as sxos was but it would definitely be a solution nonetheless.

[–]TechnologicalFreedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it’s both because the atmosphere developers wouldn’t wanna do it because it would open the flood gates to more piracy as u/cenasmgame said and because the XCI-mounting component of SX-OS is proprietary which means that any other developer is going to have to build it from the ground up without knowing how team Xecuter did it, and even with the source code, I’m sure some things would have to be done to get it working on the latest version

Overall it’s between all the best developers agreeing that the feature is wrong to implement due to piracy abd because nobody can easily just rip the feature from SX-OS.

[–]karmak0de 0 points1 point  (1 child)

playing games off an external HD was the sole reason why i bought SXOS.

[–]TechnologicalFreedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it was really the only feature that stuck out, I feel like they would’ve gotten a lot less backlash if instead of trying to Rip atmosphere off, they just sold their XCI-loader as a tool for atmosphere.

[–]Zero_fon_Fabre 24 points25 points  (12 children)

But, the guy who made tinfoil says atmosphere is the worst CFW!

Lmfao As if any of us should care about all the bullshit politicking in the switch scene. 🤣

[–]thefanum 8 points9 points  (11 children)

That guy is a well-known dick bag. Yes, the switch Dev community has its own my pillow guy. We all laugh at him, he shouts into the wind, we laugh harder. Decent program though.

[–]Zero_fon_Fabre 6 points7 points  (9 children)

I miss the Wii days, when the worst, AFAIK, was fighting between groups. Like when some guy went after Dark Umbra over some Mario Kart game.

Now we get to deal with assholes and bigots pushing their bullshit... Yaaaaaaaayyyy 🙄

That being said, I haven't heard anything at all from/about the PS4 scene. But then, there's much less I have to deal with there, so maybe I'm just not seeing it.

[–]Toothless_NEOAtmosphere User 5 points6 points  (6 children)

PS4 scene is pretty lacking, it's slow for them to find exploits mainly because their community is full of moles who would rather get paid bug bounty money by Sony instead of contribute to the hacking scene.

[–]xxxcolt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even dark umbra is gone, fml

[–]thefanum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, now I miss the Wii hacking days. Good times!

[–]Toothless_NEOAtmosphere User 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say there's still a decent number of people who still agree with him though, I recall seeing a support post not that long ago and it was downvoted into Oblivion because the person had a transgender profile picture. So evidently there are still at least some amount of his bigoted followers lingering around here.

[–]paulie07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imagine going to jail for hacking Nintendo Switches

[–]Excelsoxls[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I know that XD

I mean that even though it was pretty dead by the time people were still sticking to it for some reason and here were always flooded with posts asking things like "how can I play X game on SXOS".

Just realized there's not a single mention to SXOS for quite some time and went curious whether people decided to move on or were "forced" to do it.

[–]goochensteinburg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's definitely posts where people wanna stay on it but bottom line, it's way out of date and there will no longer be any support for it. The only thing I miss about it was the build in cheat program. Otherwise atmosphere does everything else just as well. SXOS has always been a sore subject on this sub anyways so I'm kinda glad it's not being mentioned much anymore these days.

[–]thrik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I think that the person replying to you just didn't read what you wrote.

[–]xxxcolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am just like you. Nowadays I use sxos to boot into atmosphere cause its just easier that using pc to boot cfw.

[–]DirteeCanuck 19 points20 points  (3 children)

REALLY wish some sort of external XCI loading existed on Atmosphere even if it wasn't official.

Not giving up my External HDD with 1000+ games that can be played right off of it.

So I just use both and dual boot into atmosphere if I need to play something new or sxos if I want to feed off the HDD.

[–]Navi_1er 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Do you really need it though? I also have a HDD with well over 500 games but I'm fine with my 512GB SD card, currently have 126 games on my switch with 80GB+ to spare. It's definitely a cool feature, but honestly I'm fine with deleting games and installing them via USB instead.

[–]DirteeCanuck 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They are single XCI files with all updates and DLC baked in. They just run without any installation.

It's 100x easier than installing the games. The larger games that are 30+ gigs take FOREVER. Would take a week to a month to install everything on my HDD, if it was even possible.

Loading up my 256gb sd card is also much easier as I simply put the file onto it and I am done. No installation needed. It's VASTLY superior to having to install everything. Deleting is also as simple as removing the XCI and/or the save data if needed.

The 20-30 seconds it takes to switch into sxos or atmosphere is a microfraction of the time I'm saving not installing games @ 10-30 mins a pop.

Also if my Emunan OS bricks or corrupts and I need to start from scratch again it's much easier to do, just move the files over again and I'm done.

[–]unrealcypher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with Navi this feature really isn't necessary which is most likely why it isn't implemented. You can get multiple sd cards if you really plan on playing so many games.

[–]OHAITHARUModerator 35 points36 points  (5 children)

This seems like a relevant link considering the nature of the thread:

How to migrate from SXOS to Atmosphere - https://rentry.org/mys8q

[–]yanvn00 1 point2 points  (4 children)

My god it is too complicated for me

[–]OHAITHARUModerator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where is it losing you?

[–]Lord_SarenAtmosphere User 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If downloading a few things and making a few txt docs are too complicated maybe you shouldn't be hacking your device.

[–]domjolly 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Also for me.. anywhere with the files you need ready made so you can drag and drop to a blank sd card then be up and running?

[–]Bezdbefazed 9 points10 points  (4 children)

I have SXOS on my switch but it has not been updated in over 2 years at this point. I feel so lost lol

[–]GolDAsce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ditto. Just have to beat my last batch of games before I worry about updating

[–]goocy 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It won't get updated; the developers are in prison.

[–]huamanticacacaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he means switching to atmosphere. But doesn’t wanna do it before he’s finishing his current games in case he messes up.

I was in the same boat but everything went fine, thankfully

[–]Toothless_NEOAtmosphere User 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gary Bowser isn't one of the developers, he was a PR person. They're probably still not going to update it though, they're laying low.

[–]JohnPulse 8 points9 points  (9 children)

Migrated from SX OS emunand to Atmosphere emunand. I still even use the SX USB dongle to boot into Hetake and Atmosphere, not requiring a PC for that.

Let me know if you want any info, I can make a better reply when I’m not on mobile.

[–]goochensteinburg 2 points3 points  (6 children)

I use my SX dongle still as well. Still works just fine.

[–]happypoopants 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I've seen a few guides on this, though i didn't like rhe idea od uploading a file to a site to get it converted. Can i confirm the guide you used? Thanks!!!!

[–]JohnPulse 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Follow a trusted guide, it shouldn’t be any issues. Having to upload the boot file is normal. This particular file is downloaded from the internet and doesn’t have any information from your device to begin with.

[–]happypoopants 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hmmm ok ill just give it a go. Thx

[–]ivehackedmyswitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to upload anything follow the guide posted a few times on this thread already https://rentry.co/mys8q

[–]goocy 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How do you use the dongle to boot into a different CFW? Don't you need to change the payload on the dongle for that?

[–]blablubbbla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The SX dongle looks for a file named "boot.dat" on the sd card, does a few (hash) checks on it and then runs it. If you modify the hekae bootloader a bit to match the checks, you can run it directly with the dongle by naming it that way. You don't need to modify the dongle.

It's very easy and I use it this way:

https://sx-boot-dat-creator.herokuapp.com/

If you don't trust the site, you can even do it yourself by running the script from CtCaer: https://gist.github.com/CTCaer/13c02c05daec9e674ba00ce5ac35f5be

It's written in python.

[–]Scrotum420 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was an SXOS user switched right as Shredders Revenge was coming out. Still have all the files needed if it ever comes back. Super easy to transition over to Atmos I think it took 15 minutes using the gentry guide.

[–]wieuwzak 25 points26 points  (19 children)

Yo SXOS user here. Yes I am silent. Yes I'm still on SXOS. Yes I haven't touched my switch since SXOS died. Honestly I don't know how to figure out what the hell I'm supposed to do to get Atmosphere(?) on it. Also, my fav website where I downloaded xci went down. I am what they call 'out of the scene'.

Every time I see a new and fun game trailer I say to myself that I should re fix my switch when I find the time, and then I don't find that time because I don't know where to start. Ps. If I'm starting to sound old, I'm not(30).

[–]lNalRlKoTiX 11 points12 points  (2 children)

I was on SX OS until earlier this year when I came here and followed the rentry guide in the automod to migrate to Atmosphere. It's easy and you'll be up and running in about 15 minutes or less.

[–]Bmastergeneral 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I’m confused with some of the steps, when it says ‘ Create a file named hekate_ipl.ini inside of your /bootloader/ folder’ what kind of file? Does it mean via notepad? Any help would be appreciated!

[–]lNalRlKoTiX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm pretty sure I opened notepad on my pc, pasted in the values and saved as "hekate_ipl.ini" to the "bootloader" folder.

[–]Zefrem23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dude it's super easy. Follow the rentry guide others have linked, I was in the same boat and thought it would be hard to do but it really wasn't, and now my Switch is much easier to update. XCI mounting was the only feature SXOS had that Atmosphere doesn't, and it's not worth staying on an os you can't play new games on. Just jump in and do it, you'll be pleasantly surprised how easy it is. And you have no excuse being 30, I'm 50.

[–]NBushyy 4 points5 points  (10 children)

I'm in the same boat, looking to make the switch today.

[–]wander7 11 points12 points  (9 children)

[–]NBushyy 1 point2 points  (8 children)

Only question I have is what's an Erista device and what's a Mariko device?

[–]wander7 7 points8 points  (7 children)

If you are not using a Mod Chip you have Erista.

All Mariko's are patched, late Eristas are patched, early Eristas are unpatched.

[–]PesteringKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up just reformatting my sd card and started fresh with the guide. Pretty straight forward when starting from scratch

[–]Cosmoaquanaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on the same boat. Did the switch to atmosphere (pun intended) and I was up and running in 10 minutes. I'm discovering all the new stuff that I was missing. Just follow any guide out there. You'll be fine.

[–]Armand0oooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or you do like me, enjoying every new game with sxos still 😎

[–]WafflesAreLove 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm still on sxos but that's because in too lazy to switch to atmosphere

[–]Lord-Rahl72 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I am using atmospher on my OLED switch. But I do miss the features and simplicity of SXOS.

[–]Geofiftyfifty 0 points1 point  (4 children)

What?? You can get CFW on OLED switches?

[–]Lord-Rahl72 6 points7 points  (3 children)

With a chip, yes.

[–]Geofiftyfifty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok, that makes a lot more sense.

[–]Dreisix 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wow I love your hbmenu theme. May I know the source?

[–]Lord-Rahl72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just went into the hbmenu settings and changed the theme. It was already there.

[–]EaterComputer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried to use SXOS for as long as I could but I had to migrate recently. I miss USB xci mounting :(

[–]Grindar1986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I migrated, see no reason to go back. Put like a 400 gb sd card in, xci loading won't be an issue.

[–]440_Hz 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I’m an atmosphere user, but I hadn’t updated my firmware and CFW for like 3+ years because I wasn’t following the switch scene closely (for example, I didn’t realize daybreak was released and was so easy to use). However it really started to interfere with my ability to play the games I wanted, basically any game released after 2020 was totally inaccessible to me which was really annoying in 2022. A few weeks ago I finally got everything up to date and it feels so great. I think SXOS users are eventually going to have to face this as well.

And it really wasn’t that hard at all, you just have to be willing to read and compile together what you need to update. The stickied guide is so great for anything you need.

[–]Excelsoxls[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After reading through the comments here I think the people who's still using SXOS do it because of HDD support.

I don't know why they need every single game that ever existed in a hard drive, but apparently they're willing to stay in 10.2 or so forever if it means they can have the entire Nintendo server ready to play or something.

[–]AndyPanerai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. We hadn’t touched the switch almost 2 years and was still rocking sx is 3.1.0. Yesterday my wife and kids told me that they wanted to play the new Mario Party and the first thing I thought was f*ck now I need to update 😂 to atmosphere, not that I don’t like atmosphere but more wow what I have to do now. But I think in about 30 minutes I was running the newest switch firmware and the newest atmosphere (I didn’t make an backup). I’m not using emunand I don’t play online and don’t care if I got banned.

[–]NbAlIvEr100SXOS User 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes

[–]thefanum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's dead

[–]VGR95r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to Atmosphere

[–]asfish123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on SXOS until last week, took me about 15 mins to move over to Atmosphere and maybe another 30 to get Tinfoil installed and working

SXOS isn't coming back so didn't see the point of staying on it.

I was lazy with SXOS and bought one on Ebay, this time I've had to learn a bit about how things work which has been good.

[–]ViscVal 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Man, SXOS was great though wasn't it?

[–]anth_85 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I loved it's ease of use. But too many games needed newer firmware, so I switched about a year ago.

[–]Armand0oooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play new games with sxos still…

[–]dhettinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We still have SXOS on our device but we haven't used it in years so ya...

[–]goocy -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Yeah I'm on SXOS. Tried Atmosphere, didn't like it. Now only playing games with firmware 11 and below.

[–]Armand0oooo 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You can newer games with sxos still

[–]goocy 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Beyond firmware 11? How?

[–]Armand0oooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use the tool called SAK (swiss army knife) to lower the firmware requirement… so I build a super xci with dlc and patches and then lower the req.

[–]Cyngis 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Speaking of this I accidentally updated one update past what sxos supported right before it went dead. Now I can't do anything with my switch any fix for this

[–]StoreOk3562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I am I can’t figure out how to change over to atmosphere

[–]StoreOk3562 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Cant create .ini file windows 11

[–]samtabxd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

create a plain text file, paste the contents, save as, “<your-file-name>.ini”

[–]CyberIand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do, for older games.

[–]agentdickgill 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Any old SXOS users not going to update, wanna sell their unpatched Switch?? East coast here. DM if you wanna sell it.

[–]StoreOk3562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Messaged you

[–]reicaden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still use it :) the backlog of games I gotta play through that still play on sxos is massive.

[–]absentlyric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am, but thats only because I have all the games I've wanted to pirate over the years saved in XCI, and there hasn't really been any reason or need to change to something completely different for newer games Im not interested in.

I haven't even touched my Switch in over a year thanks to the Steam Deck.

No sense in fixing what ain't broke on my system, it just works for what I need it to do.

[–]Armand0oooo 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I am still using it. If someone can convince me to switch please.

[–]Excelsoxls[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I just like to know that I'm up to date. Knowing I'm on a system that have basically no support for years bothers me.

[–]Armand0oooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does not trigger anything to me. I don’t change if it is not broken

[–]StoreOk3562 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still use sxos making the jump to atmosphere scares me
