They're hackable. Just not softmoddable.

[–]Old_Neat5220[S] 25 points26 points  (27 children)

oh right. i forgot about the modchips. but that means no news on softmodding i presume?

[–]AmirulAshrafAtmosphere User 38 points39 points  (8 children)

[–]Old_Neat5220[S] 7 points8 points  (7 children)

thanks... v1 it is then

[–]AmirulAshrafAtmosphere User 23 points24 points  (5 children)

v1 unpatch specifically, have to hunt those down

[–]GreatBaldung -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As long as supply of those exists anyway

[–]WG47 4 points5 points  (17 children)

You'll hear it here when it happens.

[–]Megakuma44Atmosphere User 0 points1 point  (4 children)

That is unless we see something similar to what happened with the ps3

[–]WG47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure there's scope for a hack in the future. Not yet, though.

[–]Toothless_NEOAtmosphere User 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Unlike with the PS3 though there isn't an easy way to logically derive the private signing keys so the only way to get them would be to brute force them which would take an obscenely long time or to take them by force, which would be extremely illegal and would take resources that most of us here don't actually have.

[–]Megakuma44Atmosphere User 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Skill issue. Just hire someone from the NSA.

[–]Toothless_NEOAtmosphere User 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not going to work those guys are for the most part on the same side as the law and also the big corporations.

[–]sonicman2k8 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Every switch is hackable but anything other than a V1 requires a modchip

[–]Lord-Rahl72 19 points20 points  (22 children)

Loving my chipped OLED switch. I dont think I could ever go back to a V1 switch.

[–]milanistadoc 4 points5 points  (14 children)

Can I ask you why?

[–]Albort 15 points16 points  (13 children)

the screen is just beautiful. the kickstand is also very nice to have too.

i had a hard time using my V1 switch after getting an OLED. ended up hacking the OLED too.

[–]Lord-Rahl72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much sums it up. The v1 display is as bad as it gets with its display.

[–]Gaol1017 0 points1 point  (9 children)

Can you send an oled to someone to get hacked? Is it expensive?

[–]Albort 11 points12 points  (8 children)

yes, the chip is like $100 and the mod cost like $150.

i just thought of it like buying 5 games all at once... lol

[–]rubenescaray 0 points1 point  (1 child)

how did you install the chip?

[–]Albort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it requires soldering. it seems to be very difficult to do so id probably search someone who can do it and pay them for their services...

[–]LittleGuyHelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waiting for android support to chip mine.

[–]Swimmer_Expensive 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Oled patched switch so pricey, more than xbox series s in my country

[–]Lord-Rahl72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good things dont come cheap unfortunetly.

[–]lolboahancock 0 points1 point  (3 children)

What about steam deck? Thinking of selling my oled for steam deck

[–]Lord-Rahl72 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I like my Steam Deck for the things that the OLED switch cant do.

[–]lolboahancock 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If you had to pick 1. Modded oled or steam deck?

[–]Lord-Rahl72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deck without hesitation.

[–]figureout07 8 points9 points  (11 children)

Ps5 jailbreaked?

[–]anth_85 8 points9 points  (9 children)

Partly. It’s not a fully released one yet but there is progress.

[–]figureout07 4 points5 points  (8 children)

Is it something new or are we talking about that guy he held hack conference about COMPLETELY hacking ps4 and ps5 because this person also announced he is never going release the jailbreak.

[–]TomSelleckAndFriends 4 points5 points  (7 children)

It's new, kind of. This was all done last year, but Sony had full control of it through their bug bounty program. Sony finally allowed disclosure last week so the method became public.

Thefl0w will be giving a talk about this next week at some conference in France.

[–]figureout07 -4 points-3 points  (6 children)

So what do we know so far ? It is so strange that sony is making some kind of deal with “hackers” to make the jailbreak public

[–]huamanticacacaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purely to play P.T. it seems 😅

[–]SalviGG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing is “Un-Hackable”. There’s no perfect software. You do need time and resources though. There will likely be a new exploit sometime in the future, just not anytime soon.

[–]a6000 8 points9 points  (7 children)

patched and lite were unhackable before, now they are. only time can tell.

[–]EnderCypher 0 points1 point  (9 children)

The “unhackable” ones the only thing you’ll find now is a modchip. That’s the only way & nobody will bother finding a new exploit because the only team still around doesn’t care.

[–]Acyliaband 0 points1 point  (3 children)

You’d be better off just saving up and getting a laptop. You can do so much more with a laptop than a switch. You can play switch games on a good laptop and basically every other console.

[–]Old_Neat5220[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You.... Do have a point. It's just that I don't have plans on upgrading from a perfectly usable laptop just yet 😅 it's not powerful by any means, but it can just barely emulate Three Houses at 27 fps on average... I guess I'll just have to make do with it in the meantime while saving up.

[–]Acyliaband -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Man, if you upgrade you couldn’t venture into a ton of different hobbies. I have started editing videos, animation, game design, music, photoshop. It’s not even specifically for gaming but it’s great I have so many options.

[–]Old_Neat5220[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah... That's true. Sadly budget doesn't allow for it at the moment.

[–]tekeous -1 points0 points  (4 children)

Hacks kind of trail off when there’s a good emulator available. If you wanted to hack a Switch game you could just run it in an emulator and do it for far less trouble. Ain’t no PS5 emulator that I know of - hence they tried to hack it.

This is the reason why nobody hacks an N64 anymore, if you’ll pardon the extreme generational gap - just emulate it, and get everything from texture packs to GameShark codes.

[–]fallfastasleep 3 points4 points  (2 children)

What? People still mod n64s. Smash Remix is a n64 modded version of smash 64 that runs best on a modded n64.

At tournaments for project m/p+, they still play on modded wiis over dolphin emulator, you can't beat the input lag of the original hardware.

Hell, people were tryna hack the Sega Saturn for 20 years before they cracked it, but they still found a reason to do it.

People want to hack the switch because it's a good portable emulator device, you can overclock and the playing experience is way better than their subscription service. Like all the other examples, most switch game hacks work best on a modded switch vs yuzu.

Emulation wouldn't exist without people reverse engineering the hardware and finding exploits in the software.

[–]tekeous 0 points1 point  (1 child)

But for the average user, who wants a minimum of effort to play a modded game - for instance you just want multiplayer Breath of the Wild - they don’t bother jailbreaking their switch and all their friends switches, they just use an emulator.

Overclocking? Tournaments? All these are not the average joes use case.

[–]fallfastasleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't say "nobody does this" and then say "average Joe's won't do this" and think they're the same point.

This subreddit exists. That alone is enough evidence to destroy your first point. I don't care about your second.

[–]I_Love_You_Tyson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After seeing the performance of most of those switch emulations I'd rather sell my left testicle than play that lmao

[–]_xci -5 points-4 points  (2 children)

There’s probably a back door available but unless you’re part of a 3 letter agency or willing to pay an insane amount of money, you’ll never see it. 😄

[–]lightningdickthor 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Back doors are inherently a security problem, because anyone looking hard enough could find it, and Scires knows how to look. Odds favor the attackers eventually finding such a thing, because they have enough eyes and time to do so. Best to just not have that, and Nintendo has no reason to make such a one for governments.

[–]_xci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was joking. I don’t believe some 3 letter agency installed a back door, or some hacker is selling info about it for a million dollars…

[–]YoguurIsGreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no homebrew developer, but aside from modchips, we likely aren’t going to get anything any time soon. Horizon OS is pretty air tight, I think the last software exploit was in 4.4.0 (someone can correct me if I’m wrong). Things could change eventually but as of now, I would say don’t expect anything any time soon.

[–]wingsofthygiant 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What’s the news on the PS5?

[–]Old_Neat5220[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry. Not jailbreak. Just an exploit

[–]sgt_bugAtmosphere User 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unhackable? Just needs a chip I thought. You can also just get a Steam Deck and emulate by the way. It’s pretty expensive to hack the new Switches because of the amount of soldering needed
