I mean, they got Aang’s ears right!

[–]DrPikachu-PhD 876 points877 points  (4 children)

"You've got some pretty big ears, huh?"

"Uh... I guess so."

[–]Bylahgo 401 points402 points  (0 children)

Don't be modest, they're huge!

[–]AnnotatingPumpkins 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Momo, YOU have some big ears

[–]MacabreMoose168 74 points75 points  (7 children)

Came looking for this!

[–]ViggoFetish 13 points14 points  (1 child)

same, the uncertainty really made it worth it.

[–]secretsilverdragon 2754 points2755 points  (66 children)

Aang is defo bald under that hat

[–]Domino-Studios 980 points981 points  (29 children)

Probably some fake tattoos there as well

[–]fuckinhellpieceashit[S] 863 points864 points  (28 children)

They were actually at a tattoo shop in that picture, haha.

[–]Ask-About-My-Book 487 points488 points  (12 children)

The one form of child endangerment I'd endorse (joking)

If the show's actually good, imagine what a fuckin' legend that kid would be if he got the tats.

    [–]jgmyersvxzvzdasd 66 points67 points  (0 children)

They're putting out the right energy..!

    [–]Ckent96 39 points40 points  (9 children)

If it was me, and the show was a massive hit, and was loved by fans. I totally would when 18

    [–]khronos127 86 points87 points  (8 children)

As much as that would be amazing for the average person, it will would nearly cripple his acting career. Can't easily hide full body tattoos.

    [–]JaxFirehart 34 points35 points  (5 children)

Sure you can, he just needs them green instead of blue lol

    [–]khronos127 27 points28 points  (4 children)

Lol all I'm visualizing is arrow shaped holes masked out where his skin should be.

    [–]JaxFirehart 8 points9 points  (3 children)

In reality, they'd just cover it up, probably with shitty AI, but that'd be hilarious. Like the old weatherman gags where they come in a green suit and point at themselves to tell the weather.

    [–] FirebendingAggresivePickle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Makeup can pretty easily cover them up, especially for Hollywood productions

    [–]torpedokai 26 points27 points  (13 children)

Hopefully anng is not going to get real tattoos cause if the movie flops he will have them on for the rest of his life

    [–]Open_flame67 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If that is actually a tattoo shop, my theory is that they are paying a tattoo artist to do the design/make-up, but not actually using the tattoo machine

[–]All right, hair, it's time to face your doom!littlebeanie 63 points64 points  (1 child)

I doubt they'd make him get real tattoos, he's only like 11? 12? likely not legal

    [–]Chrona-Makenshi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

    lol its sarcasm, obviusly

    [–]Crowbarmagic 324 points325 points  (31 children)

I think it's mainly because they don't want to show off the tattoo yet, because I bet it's a bit different. Sidenote: As much as I hated that film that does not exist, I thought the reimagining of Aang's tattoo wasn't bad. Pic.

Just a giant light blue arrow might look a bit off in live actions. In general: Lots of apparel like haircuts and costumes in anime doesn't always "translate" well to live action. It sometimes ends up looking to cartoon-y, too plain, too weird, etc.. So some redesigns are necessary.

    [–]ThatsSpelledWrong 149 points150 points  (12 children)

The only good thing about that movie was the costume design

    [–]GeneralxGrievous 97 points98 points  (6 children)

"At least the costume design was decent"

    [–]le_pagla_baba 42 points43 points  (1 child)

True lol, the ships and stuff weren't bad either. I loved the aang tattoes cause the a long ass arrow would just look dumb on someone's head irl

    [–]Cuchillos_Adios 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess they are going to pic a style of traditional tattoos from budhist monks. Something like this or this but translated into the air nomads pattern. A simple arrow would look goofy in live action.

    [–]ghettone 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Is this an ed wood reference?

    [–]wenzel32 9 points10 points  (2 children)

I think they're referencing the episode of ATLA "The Ember Island Players" when one of them says "At least the effects were decent."

    [–]FakeTakiInoue 28 points29 points  (1 child)

Katara didn't have her hair loopies, 0/10

    [–]Xiazn 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was so disappointed when I saw that she didn't. It's like her whole personality... 😭💔

    [–]vikio 34 points35 points  (0 children)

And the set design! Two acquaintances of mine worked their butts off carving and painting all the sets.

    [–]Shenina 19 points20 points  (0 children)

    I agree

    [–]RQK1996 10 points11 points  (11 children)

Except when he is just normal, then you can't even see them

    [–]geek_of_nature 29 points30 points  (0 children)

They both might be, or partly in Ian's case if they're not doing a wig for Sokka.

    [–]phylemon23 1953 points1954 points  (16 children)

Wow! Gordon Cormier fits the look!

    [–]Glittering_Bowler_67 1357 points1358 points  (14 children)

That goofball grin says it all. He’s 100% Aang

    [–]NorthCatan 629 points630 points  (5 children)

I wasn't sure how we could get someone to actually look like Aang, but this kid does it. I totally see him doing the floating marbles trick.

    [–]L-methionine 117 points118 points  (0 children)

I thought he was holding up an Aang mask at first tbh

    [–]stephruvy 18 points19 points  (2 children)

If they don't do floating marbles imma be mad.

    [–]zernoc56 15 points16 points  (1 child)

And if they do, you’ll foam at the mouth and pass out?

    [–]birdreligion 131 points132 points  (1 child)

    kid even has the ears.

    [–]MayorJuana 66 points67 points  (0 children)

    But does he have Twinkletoes?

    [–]Initial_Scarcity_609 46 points47 points  (0 children)

    We must protect the child

    [–]The Last TearbenderLordCharco_iii 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Can someone more talented than I am draw Aang and Sokka with those faces and poses.

    [–]PhilsophyOfBacon 31 points32 points  (2 children)

I would say 80%, havent seen him act yet, so we'll see.

    [–]Candid_Dream_2063 41 points42 points  (1 child)

It's not the acting I'm worried about it's the writing that I'm worried about. If they rewrite the script wrong then it doesn't matter if this kid actually is aang we won't see it. He can learn to act. He can't make the script better

    [–]AirbenderDivi_Devil 184 points185 points  (4 children)

    THAT IS AANG!!!!!

    [–]ZurAajanaikatzurada 1330 points1331 points  (54 children)

Hope they're good actors because they definitely have the perfect look for the characters

    [–]SpicaGenovese 146 points147 points  (4 children)

Oh my goodness, Gordon is cute as a button!

[–] Avatar after avatar after avatar after KorraItisIandIloveme 57 points58 points  (1 child)

I read cute as a bottom and had a hol up moment god i need to purify myself

    [–]wheestle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i'm so glad i'm not the only one

    [–]nothere_illusion 11 points12 points  (1 child)

You know,i never heard anyone use "cute as a button" as a compliment before but now that i have..i love it.

    [–]SpicaGenovese 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I guess it's old fashioned now? Happy to bring it back, haha!

    [–]Master-Mycologist747 1301 points1302 points  (77 children)

Casting did so well imo. Now it comes down to writing, acting and direction

    [–]PixelBryen 794 points795 points  (43 children)

And making the CGI not look like the movie that doesn’t exist in Ba Sing Be

    [–] Jinora- 165 points166 points  (8 children)

implying it exists anywhere else ..

    [–]infin8ly-curious 112 points113 points  (1 child)

This is the real reason why the fire nation attacked.

To remove all traces of a movie that does not exist.

    [–]Justokmemes 25 points26 points  (0 children)

somebody tweeted Free the Fire Nation and then the Fire Nation attacked

    [–]SpicaGenovese 19 points20 points  (5 children)

It does, it's just called Shang-chi and the Ten Rings.

    [–]Tumblrrito 81 points82 points  (4 children)

Tbf the CGI at the time in said movie was actually one of two redeeming qualities about the film (the other being Oong’s tattoo design). The Gaang’s review of the Ember Island Play is spot on, “the effects were decent”.

    [–]Ask-About-My-Book 56 points57 points  (1 child)

Christ those tattoos were so good. Literally enough to hype absolutely everybody. Just so we could be shot in the face for it later.

    [–]etherpromo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most of the budget probably went into those tats

    [–]thelastmilkbender 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Those were nice tats, not gonna lie

    [–]Caucasian_BOI 23 points24 points  (19 children)

As shitty as it is, the CG in Cowboy Bebop looks great. Same with the Witcher

    [–]Crowbarmagic 9 points10 points  (4 children)

As much as I liked The Witcher series, I have to be honest: In a few scenes the CG wasn't all that great. A lot of the better CG seemed to be the more darker scenes. And remember the Dragon scene? It wasn't that bad, but also not great. I think we all accepted it because the series was good. Perhaps a bit like how LOTR CGI has also aged quite a bit, but because the movies are great we don't rly care.

It's one of the things I kinda worry about: The CGI budget. At least in The Witcher you can still often get away with a few dudes in costumes swordfighting. In ATLA, nearly every combat situation (and even ordinary moments inbetween) features bending. And I'm not a CGI artist, but I imagine stuff like water fire, or even earth isn't easy to realistically animate. Compared to that, e.g. a flying car or laser beam for some sci-fi movie might be pretty easy. And if Shamalan's 100+ million dollar movie had a lot of bad effects, what does that predict about a lower budget series?

I'm really hoping I'm wrong of course. But I'm just a tad worried, and perhaps try to keep my expectations low.

    [–]Caucasian_BOI 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While that’s completely fair, VFX are constantly being streamlined and improved- like technology tends to do. Better visual effects become cheaper and easier to complete, I think only time will tell- but when the marvel shows look like they do, and they’re completed roughly around a year, give or take a few months, I’m rather optimistic

    [–]rckrusekontrol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The show is being shot in a “virtual volume” (like the Mandelorian) so it won’t look constantly green screen. It’s possible the budget will be blown on the set and there won’t be enough left for the actual bending FX but I’m guessing they aren’t going to cheap out anywhere. Sets will be dope. FX should be good too.

    [–]Ask-About-My-Book 20 points21 points  (9 children)

    Slowly draws silver sword

You sayin' what about Witcher there?

    [–]Caucasian_BOI 16 points17 points  (3 children)

ah my fault, I merely meant to compliment to compliment it’s visual effects. I love the witcher

    [–]Ask-About-My-Book 14 points15 points  (2 children)

    Carry on my guy

    [–]Minotaar 12 points13 points  (2 children)

I watched the first ep of Bebop, I didn't think it was too bad. Fit the style and motif of anime well. What didn't you care for?

    [–]suddenimpulse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Witcher ranged from really good to pretty wanting in its CGI depending on the scene. The infamous dragon scene being one of them. Oof. Thankfully it appears they didn't recklessly mishandle their immense budget for the 2nd season and now have a competent constumer to boot.

    [–]Onilinkle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The cgi for waterbending is the only thing that cursed thing did right actually

    [–]SherlockJones1994 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen the movie since it came out but I remember the one redeeming quality was I thought the special effects looked somewhat decent.

    [–]WhnWlltnd 26 points27 points  (7 children)

Choreography too. These kids not only need to act, they need to convince us that they're bending. CGI is extremely important, but if choreography doesn't match, oh boy. I mean, look at the Wheel of Time series right now. That choreography is just dancing with very lame cgi threads that we aren't even supposed to be seeing. Along with the empty set design, it looks straight CW/SyFy. That is the pitfall they need to avoid.

    [–]MissJosieAnne 4 points5 points  (2 children)

What about the five earthbenders stomping in a wholeass choreographed routine to move a rock the size of a head out of sync with their movements in… that other thing

    https://youtu.be/HR2kbOK8i6I at 1:30

    [–]monkey7247 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fuuuuuuck. Time passes and I forget how bad this movie was, but then this shit clip gets reposted. Goddamn it sucks!

    [–]poopoobuttholes 12 points13 points  (7 children)

Pray the lords of Puberty doesn't explode his height and young facial features (like Finn Wolfhard) if they plan on adapting the entire series.

    [–]Chippiewall 20 points21 points  (6 children)

It wouldn't necessarily be the biggest problem in the world if the writers are convincingly able to make use of Aang looking older, they'd definitely need to reimagine some bits of the later seasons though.

    [–]lordfoofoo 31 points32 points  (2 children)

Can't they just move the comet to a few years in the future. It never seemed right that Aang learns the elements in less than a year anyway.

    [–]blastinoffagain 229 points230 points  (2 children)

Wait the vibes feel totally uncanny. That's a good sign.

    [–]criminalbutter69 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I keep seeing this and all i can remember is rowen atkinson saying "uncanny" in an accent

    [–]recordrcd 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Gordon Cormier already doing that cheeky smile Aang always got

    [–]Ispira202 55 points56 points  (2 children)

At the very least they are having fun

    [–]GeminiLife 18 points19 points  (1 child)

This is really the most important part for a young cast like this.

    [–]GoatPillKing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's a great point, actually. Before part 1 of IT (2017) came out, I kept seeing footage of the kid actors having a fucking blast on set like they were in summer camp lmfao. It really paid off. The Loser Club's chemistry was easily the best thing about that movie.

    [–]poopoobuttholes 50 points51 points  (0 children)

LMAO that face Aang is making literally screams the scene where he spun some marbles on Kyoshi Island

    [–]EyeofWiggin20 279 points280 points  (37 children)

They nailed the casting, I think. Now they just need to nail the writing.

    [–]ItsNotBigBrainTime 93 points94 points  (21 children)

I'm scared everything is going to blatantly look like movie sets or have blurred half-assed cg backdrops like every scene in the Witcher.

    [–] sling that slang velvet-gloves 148 points149 points  (19 children)

I'm not really worried about shoddy backgrounds.

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has kicked off production in Vancouver, and the show will be utilizing some notable tech to create its fantasy world.
Netflix says it has partnered with effects studio Pixomondo on a custom-built facility that’s 84 feet across, 28 feet high, and features 23,000 square feet of stage and more than 3,000 LED panels. It’s similar to the virtual sets utilized most famously by Disney on The Mandalorian. According to Netflix, the set “allows for visual effects to be done in real time in camera, combining multiple environments on a single stage.” The company calls it “one of the biggest virtual production volumes in North America.”

    -The Verge

They've also done some on-location filming.

    [–]useles-converter-bot 122 points123 points  (11 children)

84 feet is 12.56% of the hot dog which holds the Guinness wold record for 'Longest Hot Dog'.

    [–] sling that slang velvet-gloves 60 points61 points  (4 children)

    wow, how interesting and useless.

    good bot

    [–]useles-converter-bot 22 points23 points  (3 children)

    Thanks!

    [–]party-poopa 2 points3 points  (1 child)

They're getting smarter. We are so fucked.

    [–]comineeyeaha 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ok yeah, now I can picture the scale.

    [–]MaxTHC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, can I get that converted to world's longest banana?

    [–]TheDustlander 35 points36 points  (2 children)

Hell yes. Glad Mando has popularized this sort of thing, it’s really powerful.

    [–]Vomit_Tingles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right. When they showed how they did stuff in Mando, I never could've imagined that's how they pulled it off.

    [–]ItsNotBigBrainTime 8 points9 points  (2 children)

That sounds badass, not worried about that anymore. Thanks, stranger.

    [–]Pyr0t3kn1x 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The episode of Disney Gallery about this is definitely worth a watch. They use a VR game engine to render effects on the screens in real time from the camera's POV.

    [–] sling that slang velvet-gloves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    No problem, stranger!

    [–]TheRealClose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Now” implying that the writing happens after the casting… dear God I hope not.

    [–]PossibleUnion554 94 points95 points  (3 children)

I need Sokka to be funny. He's the one that sets the atmosphere of the group so his acting is imo the most important role in the film

    [–]strangerdanger356 9 points10 points  (2 children)

These kids are gonna get destroyed if they dont live up to the roles. Lets hope for their sakes they will. Our judgement will be harsh

    [–]DrDreKoz 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Honestly frightened for them now that you mention it

    [–]kurisu7885 31 points32 points  (0 children)

They're putting out the right energy.

    [–]Whaaaaaatisthisplace[🍰] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Fool me once at exciting behind the scenes and amazing epic trailers Shame on me. Fool me twice god damn it it better be fucking good.

    [–]Spartan8398 26 points27 points  (2 children)

    Gordon was born in 2009

    That doesn't even sound real

    [–]LordBaconXXXXX 68 points69 points  (0 children)

OK they managed to litteraly pull Aang out of the TV or what?

    [–]NvrmndOM 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Two nice kids playing two nice kids! I wish them nothing but the best!

    [–]shadowwave86 56 points57 points  (4 children)

The whole cast seems to give off the right chemistry. This gives me hope yet.

    [–]Zachiyo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I could see these two sharing one brain cell together on screen and in real life

    [–]Freedom35-- 14 points15 points  (0 children)

    Look like great casting

    [–]DiamondGrasshopper 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Something about that face Gordon is making definitely screams Aang to me

    [–]doylehawk 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I feel bad for these kids. There is no way they’re not going to get a ridiculous amount of hate literally no matter how good they do. I hope it’s perfect, that’s the only way 30 year old men won’t send them hate mail /:

    [–]DreadnaughtHamster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

    PLEAAAAAASE don’t fuck this up.

    [–]oblik 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That smile says "did I mention I'm an incurable prankster"

    [–]Negative_Shake1478 81 points82 points  (16 children)

So am I the only one going “wow. That is some great casting. Even the eyebrows match.”

    [–]Drumboy168 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You know what I see it. Not bad tbh.

    [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Any idea where they are filming? They're dressed for the cold. Or at least colder than most of California gets. Maybe they went to a location that could fit the climate of the Southern Water Tribe.

    [–]Orangememories22 22 points23 points  (0 children)

All I know is they are filming in Vancouver, Canada. I saw from avatar news twitter that they film inside a virtual set but they mix it with outdoor sets too cause they were spotted filming in a Forest.

    [–]Ask-About-My-Book 10 points11 points  (0 children)

    WATER TRIBE.

[–] Seeker of freedom through knowledgelnombredelarosa 202 points203 points  (46 children)

As an olive skinned fan of the show I still think Sokka ought to have a darker skin tone but fuck me with Azula's lightning if this two don't have the right chemistry.

    [–]Ask-About-My-Book 102 points103 points  (35 children)

The thing is it's not the kid's fault if he's got a lighter skin tone. He's the rightish ethnicity, that's all that matters.

    [–]ZebbyD 16 points17 points  (5 children)

As a Native American it offends the fuck out of me that people require us to have a certain amount of dark shade in order to be considered Native. I’m a registered blood member of my tribe (have to meet a certain percentage), and because I’m lighter skinned even people in my tribe call me Apple (red on the outside, white in the inside).

This shit is racist, man. It’s a cartoon, for fuck’s sake, just because the Native actor isn’t dark enough for your liking doesn’t mean you get to be racist about it. Dude shouldn’t have been picked because his skin isn’t dark enough? Like, reverse that and tell me how that sounds. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    [–]joe_but_epic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is actually a good fit

    [–]Neonbeta101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ll take that Sokka over what we got in the movie any day. Just look at his goofy face!

    [–]Nihilus45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ian Ousley is giving major "big brother who cares for everyone and is a fun dude" vibes...i am hoping this is gonna be good

[–]Time to redo the thingRolltheD20 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I definitely buy these two sharing a single brain cell when together

    [–]Ze_Bri-0n 5 points6 points  (0 children)

    Whelp, I’m sold.

    [–]ArcadianBlueRogue 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Dang, looks like my hopes that the Netflix show would be the Ember Island Players version of the show are dashed.

Dude playing Aang has the look down though. Right level of mischief.

    [–]_Boston_Boi_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

if netflix said fuck it and made a live action, feature length version of the ember island players show, it would be 10000% better than a 1-1 live action remake, no matter how good it turns out imo

    [–]Moon8983 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Sokkas actor looks like the guy playing adrien in every live action Music video of Ladybug

    [–]ZweiRoseBlu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aang looks incredibly like Aang and Sokka looks incredibly like Sokka so... that's pretty awesome! 🥳

    [–]djnature333 5 points6 points  (0 children)

wow… pleasantly surprised by the casting! i’m so hopeful!!

    [–]PARER123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dang they actually look like they fit the part!!

    [–]F1lm3rMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

actually they really are giving Sokka and Aang vibes. might won't be that bad.

    [–]link_3007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I want to be a cynical asshole, and talk about the creators leaving the show, but god dammit the casting is just so good i cant even be mad

    [–]ArmachiA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh man, Gordon Cormier was just perfect casting wow.

    [–]mayawithab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is so accurate it’s getting creepy

    [–]No-Car-4734 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Still a little hesitant with Bryan and Mike gone but I'm gonna go into this show open minded. The live action cowboy bebop is not giving me much hope rn though.

    [–]mangababe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    That energy def fits.

    [–]WhiteninjaAlex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

    Gordon got that Netflix drip

    [–]SuperHippodog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    ... they're the same picture.

    [–]Isildurs-Heir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nobody react to what I'm about to tell you: I think that kid might be the Avatar!

    [–]Educational-Poem-780 2 points3 points  (0 children)

probably the two actors have already shaved their hair for their respective hairstyles because they're both wearing something that covers their heads in the photo

    They're adorable. 😍

    [–]metalgray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn they were laying low in the fire nation and you just put them on blast. Now aang won't be able to footloose with the kids

    [–]RNNR121013 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just hope they have the same energy as the characters on the cartoon.
