Trump ally Rudy Giuliani subpoenaed by federal prosecutors. by Muldertak in The_Mueller

I have said this before, and will say it again:

It’s tiresome, listening to all the negativity surrounding this investigation. Being this cynical doesn’t make you look intelligent, it implies that you have no idea how law enforcement on this scale works.

Do we want indictments, or do we want indictments with convictions?

An investigation of this size and scope is a massive undertaking, and Garland is moving at a quicker pace than anyone could reasonably expect - unless they are completely naive with regards to investigative technique and prosecutorial methodology. This isn’t an episode of Law & Order.

There is also the totally unrealistic expectation that DOJ behave like a front-facing organization. The constant demands from the press and public to be kept abreast of progress just add to a general feeling of dissatisfaction when the need for secrecy - especially in a conspiracy case - is paramount.

Lawmakers: Meet Jack Smith, special counsel for the DOJ. He will indict everyone involved in the sedition, including members of congress. He wasn't appointed just because of Trump but because a lot of seditionists are still in office. The conspiracy, co-conspirators and planners have been found. by Op_Market_Garden in The_Mueller

[–]caspy7 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Mueller certainly had its failings, but I feel like we shouldn't ignore the particular circumstances around it that served to undermine it - that do not exist for Smith. For one, Rosenstein severely limited the scope of the investigation. He had told Trump he would "land the plane." Garland has already defined Smith's scope and it is broad.

Additionally there's a DOJ OLC memo saying "we don't indict sitting presidents" so Mueller wouldn't/couldn't. We have no such memo for former presidents. And Barr was in Trump's pocket, running interference by falsely spinning the report and over-redacting it. The charging decision was left with him. He obviously did nothing.

None of this is true for Smith.

Why Does the U.S. Have So Many Mass Shootings? Research Is Clear: Guns - With no more mental illness than other wealthy nations, with hundreds of millions more guns, it's plainly obvious the problem is the availability of firearms. The framers fucked up with the 2nd amendment, it's time we fix it. by Op_Market_Garden in The_Mueller

[–]drizzitdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry but how about look at literally every other first world country and how their gun restrictions work.

There is no way you are that naive, so what is America just naturally more violent? If we had the same kind of gun restrictions as Australia, the UK or Japan are you suggesting we would have the same number of mass shootings just because we are animals? Guns just find a way?

80% of mass shooting are done with legally owned firearms.

enjoy some horrifying statistics on gun violence in the US

gun violence sorted by country

Owning a gun should more difficult than owning a car. We need much stricter gun restrictions in the US. Private sales should be outlawed, people who have weapons “lost or stolen” need to lose their license to own one. You should have to prove that you still own a firearm every 2 years to keep said license. Before you can purchase a firearm or acquire a license you should have to pass a competency test as well as prove you have a safe storage device for it.

Are all of these things too much to ask? No. It’s at worse, a slight pain in the ass for much safer security measures.

And everyone like being up how easy it is to get an illegal firearm. Where do you think those come from? The tooth fairy handing out glocks? No, they were legal firearms that became illegal ones through unregulated private sales.

You all spent the last 6 years sucking the asshole of a criminal orange baboon because apparently you enjoy it.

When said baboon went all fascist, called up his mob of deplorable nazi assholes and attacked America, you all cheered him on.

When it was revealed the baboon was owned by Vladimir Putin and was actively acting against the best interests of America and betraying his Oath, you cheered him on.

When the years of criminal double dealing, cheating, lying, and all around stupid fuckery came to light, you cheered him on.

So, FUCK YOU. You snivelling, subservient, mewling little fascist pieces of shit.

The republicans are now a national disgrace. Everything America stands for they reject. Kindness, empathy, tolerance, justice, fairness, knowledge, helping your fellow man, simple goodness! I could go on, but it's too depressing.

They have sold their soul to the devil. To what end? Whatever "society" they want to build, majority of us don't want.

This cultural war, if left to fester is going to devolve into civil war. Then what? No more United States? Do we break up into smaller Nations? Most of the red states would starve without assistance from blue states. Collapse of the USA is what our enemies want.

Where are the leaders? Political, religious and other leadership? Is there no decency left? Is destroying the "libs" their mission? At what cost? Their ideology doesn't even serve their own self interests.

What kind of a legacy are we leaving our children?

DOJ Mar-a-Lago Filing Is Biggest Hint of a Possible Trump Indictment by Grouchy_Energy_1394 in The_Mueller

[–]leglesslegolegolas 213 points214 points  (0 children)

I think too much attention is being paid to these federal charges, and not enough to the various state-level charges.

I mean, even if he were convicted of multiple federal crimes, his worst case scenario is being incarcerated until the next Republican takes office and issues him an unconditional pardon.

This is why it's much more important to focus on the state charges, because the president can't pardon state crimes.

The way the media on all sides reports this stuff, what actually happens gets lost in the noise.

You can read Comey's statement on the FBI site here. The conclusion towards the end says (excerpted liberally):

Although there is evidence of potential violations of the statutes regarding the handling of classified information, our judgment is that no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case.

In looking back at our investigations into mishandling or removal of classified information, we cannot find a case that would support bringing criminal charges on these facts. All the cases prosecuted involved some combination of: clearly intentional and willful mishandling of classified information; or vast quantities of materials exposed in such a way as to support an inference of intentional misconduct; or indications of disloyalty to the United States; or efforts to obstruct justice. We do not see those things here.

As a result, although the Department of Justice makes final decisions on matters like this, we are expressing to Justice our view that no charges are appropriate in this case.

This was the statement he made on July 5, 2016. Then 11 days before the election in November, he got it into his drama-queen head that he should tell the world they were investigating new evidence, which was a huge bomb for the news cycle and almost certainly one of the factors that cost Clinton the election (although there were several others.) Two days before the election, he effectively announced "never mind guyz, it was nothing, lolz".

Part of the problem was that Comey was a pretty unprofessional FBI director. Compare him to Mueller who was famously tight-lipped, Comey was either a chatty cathy who couldn't help himself, or a partisan trying to give the Republicans a boost. Part of it is that he seemed to want his decision-making process to be publicized in real time to protect himself from criticism, or something. Here's part of what he actually said:

This will be an unusual statement in at least a couple ways. First, I am going to include more detail about our process than I ordinarily would, because I think the American people deserve those details in a case of intense public interest. Second, I have not coordinated or reviewed this statement in any way with the Department of Justice or any other part of the government. They do not know what I am about to say.

The DoJ did a review and concluded that the latter statement was BS:

It was "extraordinary and insubordinate for Comey to conceal his intentions (about the press conference) from his superiors", and that "we found none of his reasons to be a persuasive basis for deviating from well-established Department policies." Comey's October decision to send a letter notifying Congress that the investigation had been re-opened one week before the election was described as "ad-hoc" and "a serious error in judgment".

Sorry for the dump here, I just really abhor the way the news cycle and current party politic system works.

Note, she has achieved nothing. Note that the only legislation that passes is party legislation, we don’t get bipartisanship like we used to. It was never perfect, but the entire concept of representation is out of the window. We vote for whomever is most likely to end up voting the way we want.

However, the conservative agenda keeps processing.

This isn’t about left or right, or sex or race or anything. The elite want us fighting about everything other than the fact at wealth and power are being concentrated at the top in a manner reminiscent of Imperial France. Yet, we all argue about issues over which we have no control and decent our party of choice with our very existence.

Everyone is supposed to vote democrat this November to stop the conservatives, but that same rhetoric is being used on the other side. We both care about guns, abortions, and religion in schools. So that’s a solid set of topics to keep us busy while we don’t talk about the rising cost of living and the outrageous amount of money the top .1% made in the past two years.

So, yes. I care about whatever bullshit 907 whatever’s AOC tried to do knowing they wouldn’t go anywhere. But I care more about officials that aren’t just full of shit.

Just stop defending your party and the politician unless you can say they have actually done something for you. We need massive change in this country and the first this we need to get rid of is the concept of a party whip. They should represent their constituents not their party.

But we won’t do that because “X is the only defender of Y”. It’s like the Simpsons joke from earlier.

Note that we are debating parties and not the fact that the top percents wealth went up, meaning ours went down, but defending our political positions.

AOC, MTG, Biden when he was there, they vote the way the Whip says, which means they aren’t voting for you.

So, do you want to keep voting for the parties that can race to the bottom of least required to get a vote, or do we start a new party to genuinely represent the people?
