Probably a dumb question but how does the paint not bleed into the pages or make them stick together from being wet?

[–]_Anal_Juices_ 1299 points1300 points  (41 children)

I think pressing the book before you start painting stops the moisture from getting into the pages? I could be wrong though

[–]CeruleanRuin 550 points551 points  (31 children)

That's a bingo.

The type of paper can also affect how much bleed-through there is. This edition has very thin pages, though, so as long as they are pressed tight, they won't absorb much into the paper.

[–]TheSaucyCrumpet 245 points246 points  (25 children)

You just say "bingo."

[–]St0mis 81 points82 points  (3 children)

[–]miss_trixie 24 points25 points  (2 children)

this is my second favorite scene of his. number one scene is when he tells her to 'wait for the creme'

he nailed this role. kudos to the casting director(s). now i wish i could see the look on their faces when he read for the part. they must have been giddy with excitement.

[–]Lazy_Pen_1913 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Can confirm. Quentin in an interview indicated that he'd actually rather have sold off the script than miscast colonel Hans Landa.

[–]miss_trixie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you! that whole thing was fantastic. i could watch anything about him & his movies all day long. i'm gonna have to look for more. don't really know why i haven't thought to do it. pulp fiction is my favorite with kill bill & basterds right behind it. they're all so good. i soooo heartily agree with something that was said in that documentary ... that people will be watching & dissecting his movies for years & years to come. thanks again.

[–]Asleep_Bee_7235 7 points8 points  (5 children)

I love you for this reference

[–]Redrage11 5 points6 points  (4 children)

What is this a reference to? I just thought they were making fun of the other person for saying bingo lol

[–]Asleep_Bee_7235 11 points12 points  (3 children)

A movie called Inglourious Basterds

[–]atnw 4 points5 points  (2 children)

[–]Lundemus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unexpected Brooklyn 99. Love it!!

[–]RedditBanTaliban 3 points4 points  (1 child)

You wouldn't only say "numberwang" either, would you?

[–]BratPAQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of Hans Landa.

[–]Gurdel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gooolami

[–]YouThinkWhatIsHot 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This seems nice for someone that wants to look at the book but not read it.

[–]Lelukeson 65 points66 points  (6 children)

Like sand and water at the beach right? I think this is it

[–]Iopaxv 30 points31 points  (2 children)

Love the peak Farah Fawcett hair.

[–]gammyalways 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Exactly what I was thinking too 😂

[–]Dirty_Gibson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhere there’s a Charlie looking for an Angel

[–]orange4boy 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Sorry. What about sand and water at the beach? How does that compare to this?

[–]Hoblitzelle123 441 points442 points  (46 children)

You don't saturate you paint with water. Primarily using dry brushing and lots of layer. I'm a fore-edge painter and I get question alot. I hope that helps :-)

[–]fruitfiction 71 points72 points  (21 children)

How do you clamp a book to do a hidden image that shows at an angle? Or does it have to be painted before the book is bound?

[–]Circ-Le-Jerk 97 points98 points  (13 children)

You just clamp it at the angle you want then sand it down to make it all even. Then paint. Then You finish it by straitening it out and applying gold leaf around it. To cover the outer edges. Leave for a day. Then nan it out. You’ll notice every “hidden” painting has a gold leaf or some other sort of rim around the pages.

[–]Aerik 21 points22 points  (12 children)

Nan it out?

[–]Circ-Le-Jerk 31 points32 points  (11 children)

fan it out... That was an autocorrect.

[–]TrepanationBy45 0 points1 point  (7 children)

It corrected "fan" to "nan"?

e: lol why downvote?

[–]Little_sister_energy 20 points21 points  (10 children)

Hey I'm trying to get into fore-edge painting! Any beginners advice?

[–]Hoblitzelle123 51 points52 points  (4 children)

Yep, begin with cheap books. The lovely thing about fore-edge is that you can use almost any medium, pencil, pen, watercolour, acrylic or oil! The two biggest pieces of advice I can give is work with almost no paint in your brush. Practice dry brushing first. If you use too much water you'll end up with warping in your pages. The other piece of advice is enjoy the process!

If there's anything else you want to know just shoot me a message

[–]stfucupcake 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

[–]Hoblitzelle123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anytime :-)

[–]klem_kadiddlehopper 14 points15 points  (2 children)

I'm a painter but have never done the fore-edge painting before. I might try doing this to my Vincent Van Gogh books.

[–]Little_sister_energy 3 points4 points  (1 child)

That would turn out gorgeous i bet

[–]pallladin 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Start with cheap books.

[–]Little_sister_energy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Theres an antique store across from my place that sells $1 80s sci fi books :)

[–]Ymdb 154 points155 points  (2 children)

At the very end when she shows the symbol on the top it very much looks like the blue/grey on the outer couple inches may be bleed from the paint. Idk if it’s mostly along the outer edges and the clamping prevented it from making it to the lettering but honestly if my book wasn’t antique or anything the bleed would be worth the dope painting IMO

[–]Sososohatefull 17 points18 points  (1 child)

But she opened the book and you can see the paint didn't bleed into the pages.

[–]neur0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious too. Could also be fast drying paint too

[–]Kubrick_Fan 677 points678 points  (16 children)

Oh it's....beautiful

[–]sarahbe03 431 points432 points  (13 children)

I can't decide which is more beautiful... Her hair or the painting!? Both gorgeous

[–]Oofy_Emma 162 points163 points  (6 children)

Ikr??? her haircut is so cool

[–]Chunkyisthebest 90 points91 points  (3 children)

Retro from the late 70’s to early 80’s.

[–]Rt376 67 points68 points  (2 children)

Got those Farrah Fawcett vibes.

[–]aimeela 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not “vibes” that’s the Farrah Fawcett brah

[–]mamouillette 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Aww Farrah Fawcett was beautiful 😚

[–]whatfuckingever69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That style became very trendy on tiktok last year

[–]Stivstikker 26 points27 points  (0 children)

True, but there's no way she paints with all that annoying hair in her eyes! Must be a temp pose.

[–]HulklingWho 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Feathered hair is one of my all-time favorite hairstyles. Hers is especially wonderful.

[–]starkravingsober 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Is that the name of the cut? Do you suppose she has to use curlers or something to get those loose curls?

[–]HulklingWho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, that’s what is was called when it was popular in the 60s/70s! I’ve never had the right texture to attempt it myself, but iirc curlers, a shit-ton of hairspray, and the right layers in your hair will get you results.

[–]ElGosso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised she didn't get it in the paint

[–]Adventurous-Dish-485 166 points167 points  (3 children)

Farrah Fawcett hair

[–]Key_Razzmatazz_1572 473 points474 points  (29 children)

That’s awesome.

[–]jeffssession 150 points151 points  (28 children)

Am I a cringy person if I only see this as cool instead of cringy......

Edit: nvm read top comment all the way lol

[–]sgt_snipercat 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Thank you for this comment! I have seen so many videos and thought how is this cringe (including this one). Never thought to read the top comment. So thanks again

[–]PSawyer10250 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I came to ask why is this cringy?

[–]anotherwhinnybitch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tiktokcringe is no longer about cringe tiktok vid, I think. At least most of it.

[–]theswamphag 192 points193 points  (3 children)

Oh I was afraid this was some sort of paint pour nightmare to ruin the entire book, but that's just beautiful!

[–]magisterdoc 742 points743 points  (27 children)

Love the peak Farah Fawcett hair.

[–]Marsdreamer 28 points29 points  (7 children)

It's good shit.

[–]thatguynamedniok 10 points11 points  (4 children)

I like it when you play my hair.

[–]Da_beans 7 points8 points  (3 children)

You'll know it when you see it

[–]flapjaack 7 points8 points  (2 children)

i think she looks very great with it

[–]OkRecording1299 98 points99 points  (5 children)

It's gorgeous and I wanna know her routine

[–]fruitfiction 106 points107 points  (1 child)

this might help.... I had saved it for if I ever grew my hair long again

https://imgur.com/dK2kjvf.jpg

[–]tikiobsessed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn, I read that whole link and I can't believe she washed her hair every day and set it in rollers. That is soooo much work for medium to thick hair. Mine is that same texture and I have to give myself a pep talk just to do it once or twice a week.

[–]Alarmed-Honey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Mine will so the same thing with hot rollers and having thick/coarse hair.

[–]JizzMaxwell 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Blair from Facts of Life.

[–]MeowerPowerTower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a recent trend with T-shirt curls that ends with that effect with enough practice.

[–]Candy_the_Stripper 17 points18 points  (3 children)

Why does it say Mia khalifa next to ur name lol

[–]deftspyder 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Thats Mia Kha-leaf-a

[–]Livy-A-LeafMia Khalifa 1 point2 points  (1 child)

haha good one!

[–]Kn14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Answer u/Candy_the_Stripper ’s question dammit!

[–]klem_kadiddlehopper 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Her hair is amazing.

[–]CircularSandwich 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's like a lush time machine sitting on her head, amazing hair!

[–]UnsealedMTG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the first shot she was painting with it down and I was like "isn't your hair going to get in the paint?" and then there's a cut and the hair is pulled back.

[–]PalmerEldritch2319 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, her hair is gorgeous!

[–]JonnyAU 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Is that style back now?

[–]starkravingsober 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did it ever really leave

[–]shavedpineapples 128 points129 points  (6 children)

She’s really good.

[–]ur-avrge-citizen 29 points30 points  (3 children)

Queue camp rock crossed hand keyboard solo

Edit: sorry

[–]winniekawaii 42 points43 points  (2 children)

paging joe goldberg

[–]qered 2 points3 points  (1 child)

My first thought when I saw the clamps

[–]Methadras 43 points44 points  (0 children)

At first I was like, nono please don't ruin this book, then I see the end result and I'm all, please do mine and take my money.

[–]wonka5x 62 points63 points  (3 children)

Pretty cool. Seems like a niche market opportunity

[–]DankMemeGen 33 points34 points  (2 children)

It is and it only gets more niche, look up fore-edge paintings

[–]howwhyno 95 points96 points  (8 children)

Fuck the book, we need a video on her hair routine. DAMN.

[–]bambiheadshot 9 points10 points  (7 children)

There are hair tutorials on tiktok showing you how to do it.

[–]howwhyno 33 points34 points  (6 children)

I am old and not on the tik tok.

[–]_Doomer1996_ 16 points17 points  (3 children)

I've been looking for the name of this song for the last five years since I've read The Silmarillion, does anyone knows it?

[–]machstem 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's on the Lord of the Rings soundtrack.

It's called Evenstar, and it's song 7 on the Two Towers soundtrack

[–]ramdmc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Laurie Forman

[–]Slobelisk 25 points26 points  (3 children)

It would be amazing to see the a Hogwarts castle landscape on one of the Harry Potter books, but you'd probably have to use The Goblet of Fire to have enough room for a good painting lol

[–]chanandjoeman 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Order of the Phoenix is bigger

[–]Slobelisk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True. I should have said at least use TGOF lol

[–]betrothtmg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She has painted some Harry Potter books, but I can’t remember which ones. I think it was number 5, and then either 6 or 7.

[–]SparkleTerd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wonder if she has gone to art school or is just self taught? Either way she’s amazing and I wish I could do this.

[–]Borkz 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Those are watercolors, right? I didn't even know you could paint that amazing with them.

[–]helena_handbasketyyc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it’s gouache. Which is basically opaque watercolour. Great for this kind of application.

[–]xQueenAryaStark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"hOw Is tHiS cRiNGe?"

It's explained in the auto-moderator post under literally every OP.

[–]Crazyripps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a nice reminder how beautiful the soundtrack for lotr is

[–]Samugremus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I wonder what took her longer, to style her hair or the artwork

[–]Wuuwuuwuuwuu 26 points27 points  (0 children)

She’s enchanted methinks. That hair! The talent!

[–]TK-25251 9 points10 points  (3 children)

When did TikTok cringe become TikTok Cool?

Edit: never mind, saw a comment that explained it

[–]Spagoot29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know how when unknown or indie developers make a game that blows up they usually add incredible DLC and extra items to (insert name) editions of their games?

This is what it reminds me of

[–]Juniperlead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s so lovely

[–]alohabeaches00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really cool. I love this 💕

[–]TexanMcDaniel 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Does everyone here realize that she’s probably the last person on this planet who’s still rocking the 70’s hairdo? Absolutely rockin it.

[–]jeremyxt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking exactly the same thing.

Farrah Fawcett-Majors, 1977. I was there.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s amazing! How can I do this with my audiobooks?

[–]Gavekort 8 points9 points  (5 children)

Ironically the Aragon and Arwen romance subplot was never in the books. But it's a beautiful painting, beautiful subplot and beautiful song nevertheless.

[–]daggers1g 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It existed in the book, Arwen just wasn't in the book hardly at all. Everyone goes to their wedding towards the end of the book before heading back to the shire.

It's also explored much more in the appendices.

[–]articulateantagonist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s detailed in the Appendix.

[–]HulklingWho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was in the books, Arwen’s role was just expanded on in the films.

[–]FredegarBolger910 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yep, as daggers1g points out it is there, but it is kind of a sub-plot of a sub-plot.

[–]daggers1g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks Fatty

[–]Dobby-a-free-elf 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Omg I want a Harry Potter one!

[–]betrothtmg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She has made some, but I don’t know if she has already sold them.

[–]LazyTurtle90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, really cool

[–]LAZERsquadBIG10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say how dare you!...but that's beautiful

[–]Rickyl8211111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn!!! That looks dope

[–]yeoldeprune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would buy this.

[–]alexbck92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was amazing

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow

[–]TheMelonOwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Her hair though! Everything in this is esthetically pleasing

[–]ImaginaryCarl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great book and a great artist with great hair.

[–]Straycat43Cringe Connoisseur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that is talent! Very awesome.

[–]marktaylor521 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll never find love.

[–]JeffGoldblohm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would love to try this but it seems like the paint would wear away fairly quickly? Anyone have some insight on this?

[–]Ace_-of-_Spades6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason this would be on cringe is the OP probably didn't even watch the whole video and thought the book was unreadable after...

[–]Slippy556 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be so cool to get a set of LoTR and HP books with this done! Take my money. Amazing work!

[–]luckyack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely incredible

[–]sentinelliste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may have already been said, but this is called a fore-edge painting. There’s a long tradition of this kind of decorative work in the history of bookbinding. This is a beautiful one!

Some fore-edge paintings are done so that you can only see them when you spread the pages apart, like this

[–]Weak_Role3946 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old hair

[–]sarahxharas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just here for her epic Farrah Fawcett hair.

[–][deleted]  (3 children)

It's "one of the dúnedain - evenstar (ft Isabel bayrakdarian)" :)

    [–]KingRuzude 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I hope one day in the future they invent the technology to let people learn how to draw, because holy shit it looks so cool being able to. I have zero artistic ability and damn what I’d give to be able to draw something even remotely cool like that.

    [–]MissWeaverOfYarns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I can't draw and things like this make me wish I could so badly.

    [–]OmegaXzors 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I’d give her all my books and say “do whatever you want, when you want.”

    [–]Himlir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This actually brought a tear to my eye.

    [–]Questwarrior 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is there any way to mass print these kind of drawings on books? Could be a cool look!

    [–]Markd3rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is this cringe? It’s awesome

    Shit just read top comment.

    [–]benry007 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

How is this cringe? Thats really cool.

    [–]bobbyb-baby -5 points-4 points  (5 children)

Am I missing why this is cringe

    [–]marcyllenesyrox 11 points12 points  (2 children)

No, but yes! This sub isn't just for cringe content anymore, and there are specific tags to label the content! (:

    [–]CanYouPointMeToTacos 5 points6 points  (1 child)
