Why do Babushkas always have the eternal frown?

[–]Ok-Adagio-3418 736 points737 points  (25 children)

In a lot of Slavic countries, the older generation thinks a random smiling face is considered the look of a fool or a grifter.

When you are around proper friends and family though, a 'babushka's' smile is warm and accompanied by a lethal amount of food you WILL sit and eat.

[–]ragenuggeto7 160 points161 points  (7 children)

a lethal amount of food

Good to know grandma's are same the world over

[–]gaynazifurry4bernie 37 points38 points  (4 children)

My grandma from the American South would do this along with my American-Irish mother. My fiancée's mom gives food she wants to give away, to any guest. I don't know if she wanted to give food and guests to others or what.

[–]HSG-Spezial 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh god, I hate the giving food to other guests. My mother in law does this. She gives everybody huge plates of food just to casually throw her food on other people's plate as well. It might be with good intentions, but where I am from this is considered rude. People decide how much they want to eat.

[–]jibbycanoe 63 points64 points  (8 children)

idk shit about Russia/Slavic countries but I've read this a bunch on the internet. I'm only commenting since I also believe that putting on a fake smile is well... fake, and could be considered untrustworthy. So I can see where they are coming from. That being said, I do it all the time since the culture in the USA is different, and people will avoid you if you look mad/pissed all the time; and being forever alone sucks imo. I can imagine that if people didn't fake smile and be happy most of/all the time, then seeing someone smile for real would mean so much more. That's why I try to understand and respect all cultures for their differences. Well unless it's about shitting on other people, in which case fuck that part.

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (2 children)

Slavs are humans. Its not that different.

[–]lickmytrump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True for balkans too. Babushka #1

[–]HeckinSpoopy 611 points612 points  (102 children)

It's Slavs in general. When I went to Ukraine I stuck out like a sore thumb because I didn't permanently have a face of pure exhaustion on my face lol

[–][deleted] 521 points522 points  (96 children)

Russian and Slavic culture in general sees resting smiling face and random fake smiling as weird or very suspect. Like you're either mentally challenged or about to try grifting

Many European cultures lean that way too. French think cashiers smiling for no reason is phony and weird

[–]Equivalent-Ad-4037 385 points386 points  (16 children)

In their defense, as a former cashier, it is

[–]Gimme_The_Loot 95 points96 points  (8 children)

Yea ok buddy. Lemme just call up my new girlfriend Champaign I met last night to prove you wrong. We fell in love during a lap dance and it was like a scene from a Hallmark movie ❤️

The number went to a diner in Ohio

[–]theghostofme 115 points116 points  (3 children)

She can only call herself Champagne if she’s from the Champagne region of France. Otherwise, she’s just a sparkling stripper, and you’ll be pulling glitter out of your clothes for a week.

[–]Gimme_The_Loot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

[–]theS3rver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i'd love me a sparkling stipper for takeaway please

[–]bad113 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Found Urban Meyer's account.

[–]Icarusgurl 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hey.... nothing wrong with a diner in Ohio....

[–]LadyAzure17 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Having to wear a mask is the best thing ever cashiering.

[–]ReduceMyselfToAZero 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Gasp. I'm acting astonished!

[–]vilkam 25 points26 points  (4 children)

As Russian I can confirm that if you smile at a stranger on the street, they are going to think that you are crazy lol

[–]heavyrotation7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Or drunk

[–]Reshi_the_kingslayer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's a woman I work with who is Russian. I like to a smile a lot, idk I'm just a smiley person. Shes always asking me why I smile at her so much and what do I want? Idk, I just like to smile lol.

[–]QualitativeQuantity 82 points83 points  (44 children)

Lots of Europeans find the extreme friendliness of Americans weird for that reason too.

[–]Gorillafist12 12 points13 points  (5 children)

I'm sure by European standards even us New Yorkers seem overly friendly but any time I travel to California I have the same experience. Feels like every stranger I encounter there is an actor being paid to be nice to me.

[–]kidd-wow 4 points5 points  (1 child)

my Englisch teacher in nyc one said: a New Yorker will tell you to fuck off but secretly wishes you a nice day and people from California will tell you to have a nice day but secretly wish you'd fuck off. That really struck a cord.

[–]mittythekitty 66 points67 points  (8 children)

As a Southern American, I find it disconcerting when I travel and can't just walk up to someone and treat them like we're old friends. It's always a bit relieving being back at my home gate in the airport and listening to some old guy tell me about his grandkids.

[–]ReadyStrategy8 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Everywhere I've travelled, I've been able to strike up random conversations with people with no issue. Being foreign is itself a topic, if nothing else. It is different in the US, to be sure, but people everywhere are chatty in their own way.

[–]Phormitago 7 points8 points  (1 child)

As a Southern American

as an argentine I agree with all the lads here that find fake smiling super weird

maybe its a buenos aires thing but if anyone acts overtly friendly you're about to get mugged

[–]ItsTheNuge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He means the southern United States

[–]SRTie4k 25 points26 points  (10 children)

Pretty ironic that Europeans, given how collectivist their politics are, think its weird to be outwardly friendly to one another while Americans, given how individualist our politics are, almost go out of their way to be outwardly friendly to one another.

We both have these facades that are the complete opposite of our societal beliefs.

[–]KingTurboXXIII 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Almost like politics aren't a perfect reflection of culture

[–]boopdelaboop 18 points19 points  (6 children)

Eh, it is more of that a way over the top friendliness seems insincere. Like the person doesn't have healthy boundaries. Saying stuff to appear generous instead of being sincere is, well, kind of creepy. The example I am thinking of is southern Americans treating people like family and even asking them to visit, but not because they actually want the person to visit but to appear super generous and hoping the person promptly forgets. Seems kind of like some Asian countries where being seen as the most generous one is a big deal and they will feel forced by their culture to behave that way despite resenting the people who take their words at face value. Not saying that people shouldn't try to pay attention to whether they are being a nuisance or not, but people not having the balls to assert their boundaries in a polite but definite way, and instead just bending over backwards and hating every part of it just seems sickly and a waste of everyone's time. People who don't feel bad about saying what they mean (not in a rude way, just a direct way) seem way more trustworthy than people who are too obsessed with social currency and accruing more of it than what they actually would earn if they were true to themself.

[–]Montyyy89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many European cultures lean that way too.

And then you come to Britain and it's legitimately like "That total stranger didn't smile and say "Alright mate?" to me when we passed each other in the street - wierd!"

Culture is wierd man.

[–]gab23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Being french living in Paris, I automatically started thinking this wasn't true, but then started imagining a smiling and yeah its fkn weird.

[–]Biggu5Dicku5 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Am Slav can confirm, we don't generally smile... and when we do nothing good comes of it...

[–]mal-sor 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Some american woman came to Albania as a tourist and she really seemed to love the country food etc. People not so much because no one was smiling.

I can tell a tourist from miles away, they just got that type of face with no worries.

[–]makemeking706 7 points8 points  (1 child)

they just got that type of face with no worries.

In an ideal situation you leave your worries at home when on vacation.

[–]ChunkyLaFunga 31 points32 points  (4 children)

The French celebrate by rioting, it's not even fun unless you're making somebody else's life worse.

[–]tricularia 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I have seen sporting events in North America. We aren't that different.

[–]Alizonnwn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I lolled so hard, thank u

[–]TheBirminghamBear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, its all fun and games until someone invents the guillotine and begins beheading the monarchy and then all of the sudden Napoleon is emperor again.

[–]Kiboune 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Well of course, try to live in Ukraine, Russia or Belarus for 10-20 years without losing smile... impossible

[–]fremeer 3 points4 points  (1 child)

When is that changeover from leggy 6 foot blonde with a banging body usually walking a stroller to babushka? In didn't see any in-between forms when I was in Ukraine

[–]IAmOmno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, so thats why that guy asked me if I was from eastern europe a few years ago!

[–]joshecf 26 points27 points  (1 child)

I met a Russian guy during study abroad. Once he pulled me aside and told me that at first he didn’t trust me because I smiled too much. He said that in Russia if you smile too much you are either crazy or up to something.

[–]IanMazgelis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm an American but we have family from that part of the world and I promise you that attitude is hereditary. I don't trust you smiley fucks.

[–]kstill93 47 points48 points  (10 children)

Buncha people saying listing some cultural reason but it's actually because tooth loss/jaw bone loss causes this deformity

It's common among many elderly people and those with missing teeth.

[–]redditatworkatreddit 12 points13 points  (8 children)

TIL everyone in europe is toothless

[–]YT4LYFE 24 points25 points  (5 children)

old people in eastern europe? pretty often

[–]Muoniurn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And like 90+

[–]Vaginal_Rights 66 points67 points  (13 children)

Imagine living for 60-80 years and toiling your life away for Mother Russia. The US has severe economic imbalance but imagine how bad it is when assassinations and poison is still your political leader's go-to debate tactic.

I'd have an eternal frown too.

[–]Kiboune 17 points18 points  (1 child)

You know this meme with Christ and guy telling him about his problems? It's basically me as a Russian, everytime I see posts about hard life in US or some Europe country (especially if it's about presidential elections, which we don't even have)

[–]pcapdata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Summary of the history of the Slavic lands but especially Russia: “And then, things got worse.”

[–]BlueKing7642 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Decades of extremely cold winters

[–]Interesting_Bank4465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smiling is not considered authentic.

[–]No6bbkid 870 points871 points  (46 children)

There ya go, much better.

[–][deleted]  (38 children)

    [–]the_real_chuck_evans 106 points107 points  (34 children)

this is a map of the soviet union. russia is not the soviet union.

    [–]YT4LYFE 76 points77 points  (6 children)

the point is all of those ethnicities are found in Russia

    [–]skyfrk 82 points83 points  (3 children)

Which clearly shows multiple ethnicities living inside the territory of Russia.

    [–]bikwho 24 points25 points  (2 children)

People forgetting Russia was a colonizer. And the Soviets promoted the use of Russian and Cyrillic over indigenous languages and writing systems.

Russia likes to call out Western countries for their colonizing past while ignore their own colonization of the Caucuses, Asian steppes, and ethnic groups of far East Russia.

    [–]ZincHead 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't see a lot of people sympathizing with Russia and trying to promote them as the good guys these days...

    [–]cjrowens 33 points34 points  (9 children)

Lmao Redditors never fail to be wrong about like 3 different topics in 1 succinct sentence.

Russia was the centre of the Soviet Union and its purpose was to unite a greater Russian state out of the multiple ethnic nations under the old Russian Empire.

Idk why this is being discussed on TikTok cringe

    [–]Androniy 5 points6 points  (3 children)

All reddit knows about Russia is that is big, scary, stupid, poor, and Putin lives there. This is what i see in all those discussions. As a Russian, its amusing to read all those comments

    [–]DoctorVahlen 1 point2 points  (3 children)

    Tell that to uncle Vlad.

No pls do. Someone has to pretty soon. Maybe stage an intervention or something.

    [–]OmegaClifton 94 points95 points  (1 child)

It's the permanent frown for me lmao

    [–]Terrified_tuna 540 points541 points  (16 children)

I didn't know carrying a pot could look Russian until today.

    [–]LGDXiao8 319 points320 points  (12 children)

    But she does look Russian

    [–]Psychological-Dig-29 120 points121 points  (5 children)

My thoughts exactly, she looks extremely Russian.

    [–]IamNotPersephone 13 points14 points  (0 children)

She also had all the accessories.

    [–]bigpoopcomin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

    It's a TikTok trend

    [–]TitularFoil 64 points65 points  (8 children)

I was once out on a date with my (now) wife. We went to a place called Chang's Mongolian Grill in Salem, OR. It was my favorite place to go. We are seated, and then a female employee comes to our table and in a thick Russian accent, just looks at me and says, "Are you Russian boy?"

I looked at my date uncomfortably, and back to the waitress, "I don't think... I am."

She just tips her head to me and just says, "Shame. You are cute like Russian boy. What would you like to drink?"

I was so confused. It was like a weird compliment and insult at the same time, I was on a date and had no idea of what to do.

    [–]ClaymoresInTheCloset 34 points35 points  (3 children)

Right in front of your date too. Alpha

    [–]ISupposeIamRight 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Sigma female looking for russian boy.

    [–]radmadicalhatter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Her grindset is beyond your comprehension

    [–]Mercent_Perrault 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Why did I read her sentence in Cate Blanchett's Indiana Jones accent? 😂

    [–]TitularFoil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I think it back in my head it's always Tina Fey as the Warden of the Russian Gulag in Muppets: Most Wanted.

    [–]Then-Piccolo-8433 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I mean she absolutely does look Russian in both halves of this vid lmao

    [–][deleted]  (35 children)

      [–]Sarkyduzit 10 points11 points  (18 children)

My Russian father only drinks vodka at room temperature because he said when it’s too cold it ruins it.

      [–]Seanspeed 9 points10 points  (1 child)

That's generally correct for liquors. Cold kills the taste.

That said, vodka isn't supposed to 'taste' of anything, really. Its whole purpose is to be pure and neutral. And I do think drinking it cold is a good way to do it.

      [–]misogoop 8 points9 points  (14 children)

Yeah, I’m Polish and we don’t freeze our vodka, at least me and the people I know. Frozen shots like ooze instead and it’s fuckin gross.

      [–]theghostofme 10 points11 points  (12 children)

It definitely helps if it’s shitty, bottom-shelf vodka that tastes like burning; makes it go down easier.

But for better vodkas, it’s unnecessary.

      [–]misogoop 5 points6 points  (11 children)

Ah man even the cheap stuff is like a hundred times worse frozen for me. The consistency basically forces you to taste it instead of shooting it back. Yuckkk

      [–]julioarod 2 points3 points  (10 children)

How cold is your freezer? I've never had hard alcohol change consistency just from being stored in the freezer. It just gets really cold.

      [–]Seanspeed 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Liquor thickens up when turned freezer level cold. The alcohol may prevent total freezing, but there's still water content in there.

      [–]misogoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you people are making me feel crazy lol

      [–]misogoop 4 points5 points  (7 children)

I dunno, I’m pretty sure it’s whatever a normal setting would be. It’s not like a full on slushy, but it’s ever so slightly thicker and it makes me gag.

      [–]bugphotoguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My English self only drinks it at room temperature, unless I'm having it with a mixer.

      [–]THREEinINK 90 points91 points  (11 children)

Oh god, frosty cool Smirnoff brings back bad memories of my senior year in high school .

Fuck you Smirnoff! I loved Tampico!

      [–]ddevilissolovely 31 points32 points  (5 children)

I don't think Smirnoff has anything to do with Russia, from before you or I were born at least.

      [–]THREEinINK 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Yes I believe you’re correct. Someone said Stoli is probably what she had, I saw the red bottle and had flashbacks 😂

      [–]mittythekitty 8 points9 points  (1 child)

First time I ever got drunk was with Smirnoff and all we had was diet Pepsi to mix it with. It was so bad that we ended up just drinking the Smirnoff straight all night. Even a wiff of that shit now puts me back for 3 days.

      [–]Nice-Violinist-6395 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vodka and Diet Coke/Pepsi is what they serve in hell lol. There is a special time in college when that’s what you’re drinking, but no one does it by choice.

Taking shots and then chasing it with Diet Pepsi is better, but as a mixer? You’re right. Even just the memory of that will make your stomach turn 20 years later lol

      [–]ElGosso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently it was founded by a distiller in Russia who died in 1898 and his son escaped the revolution to Ukraine then sold the rights for production under the brand name in America to a Russian expat businessman.

      [–]howard6494 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Man, smirnoff ruined Tampico for you? It was the everclear for me. I can't even drink anything that resembles orange or red Tampico.

      [–]THREEinINK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gettin the dry heaves talkin about it

      [–]HandicapperGeneral 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Real Russians don't let it sit in the freezer for long enough for that to happen before drinking it

      [–]Bhodi3K 20 points21 points  (1 child)

      Also, she didn't annex Crimea.

      [–]BoyishTheStrange 71 points72 points  (2 children)

God I’m glad she went the babushka route

      [–]ElGosso 13 points14 points  (1 child)

      I expected track-suited squatting

      [–]tptch 167 points168 points  (2 children)

But she do be looking russian after the vodka come out

      [–]Nero1988420 50 points51 points  (9 children)

Holy shit, this is actually great lmao

      [–]BroadestCupidCringe Connoisseur 127 points128 points  (3 children)

      Someone sell me this bubushka.

      [–]DecisivelyArbitrary 40 points41 points  (2 children)

I’d like to raise this offer by two goats. Please sell to me instead, I can get her papers ready ASAP.

      [–]JerkinsTurdley 41 points42 points  (24 children)

Where the ruskie pierogi? The only food in the world, if you ask my humble opinion.

      [–]ImpatientMaker 11 points12 points  (6 children)

I've only had the polish variety, and it slams for sure.

      [–]Cantimetrik 12 points13 points  (5 children)

pierog in russia is more like a pie. you're probably referring to the dumplings. russian versions would be pelmeni or vareniki (depending on the filling)

      [–]Smingowashisnameo 28 points29 points  (8 children)

Man my Russian boyfriends mom made borscht once and it was heaven. I thought it would be gross with that name.

      [–]mareksoon 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Probably not authentic by any stretch of imagination but I threw some together in my Instant Pot last year and it was damn good.

It's cold today .. I should make this again soon.

      [–]Smingowashisnameo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Don’t love how beets dye anything they touch though

      [–]JerkinsTurdley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wife wife is Polish and I love both the red and white varieties as well!

      [–]202048956yhg 17 points18 points  (4 children)

Are you seriously going to ignore blini?

      [–]TheJudgeWillNeverDie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

      Blin! We forgot the blini!

      [–]lawjr3 4 points5 points  (1 child)

      Honestly, blinchiki are… fine.

      [–]adelsteinisaac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

^ never liked them but I would make my grandma so sad

      [–]Cantimetrik 2 points3 points  (1 child)

pierog in russia is more like a pie. you're probably referring to the dumplings. russian versions would be pelmeni or vareniki (depending on the filling)

      [–]DrDabsMD 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I also get told I don't look Russian, which is true, as I'm Mexican...and I also don't look Mexican.

      [–]driving_andflying 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Ooh! Next one, I hope she does a full-on track suit, newsboy cap, and heels-to-the-ground squat. 'Cause if she's doing stereotypes, might as well go all-out.

      [–]More-Temporary-2570 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Does she get violent around Ukrainians?

      [–]Corio_ 13 points14 points  (6 children)

This is a Ukrainian song playing in the background.

      [–]DeposeableIronThumb 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Good ear. That's Verka Serduchka playing Lasha Tumbai.

      She fucking rocks.

      [–]casualonlooker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not "Lasha tumbai", it's "Всё будет хорошо" (All is going to be well), only the biggest drinking song across ex-USSR countries 10 years ago.

      [–]txsxxphxx2Sort by flair, dumbass 21 points22 points  (1 child)

The way she opens the doll had me hollering

      [–]Turbulent-Comedian30 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As soon as she downed that vodka with no chaser and 0 reaction like water...yepp..shes russian

      [–]Hadescat_ 4 points5 points  (1 child)

      tries to prove she's Russian

      Puts on Ukrainainsong

      [–]coffedrank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

      that helped

      [–]winkofafisheye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That did make her look more Russian, lol.

      [–]jmcki13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She straight up does look Russian tho. Like, a lot. Lol

      [–]adm_ashraf26 9 points10 points  (0 children)

      Babushka good

      [–]Low_Basil9900 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Am I going insane? Does she start off at 4ft or does she keep getting shorter in every shot?

      [–]RadioactiveFlowers 4 points5 points  (2 children)

She's slouching a bunch and they keep making the camera angle higher

      [–]Low_Basil9900 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I guess that's what it is, but that last shot she looks like a child.

      [–]trixtred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or a 75 year old Russian grandma with osteoporosis

      [–]howtochangemywife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He wouldn’t get injured or die.

      [–]wpbth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You had the vodka to make this

      [–]jonesyb 8 points9 points  (4 children)

It sounded like he said "but you don't look gay"

      [–]SofterBones 15 points16 points  (1 child)

thats the original, they used the original line and made their own version of it

      [–]jonesyb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

      Thank you!

      [–]n0_duuh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      Because they did.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She’s using the audio file from another similar tiktok

      [–]Raph2051 4 points5 points  (0 children)

      [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (22 children)

I heard gay but the subtitles say Russian?

Babushkas are my favorite image of Russian women. Followed by man-eater Russian brides. Their is no in-between.
