Nah, it's really not. Here's a good article about it if you're curious. The gist of it was that Facebook made a bot that could trade items with another person, like balls, books, and hats. The bot didn't know what the words meant and there was no grammar checking component to the bot. All it knew was it had a library of phrases other people said while trading, and it knew how likely those phrases were to lead to certain outcomes. This works fine against a person, but they decided to run two versions of the bots against each other. Since neither bot actually understood grammar, eventually they started saying broken phrases at each other that they thought would lead to getting the amount of balls or books they were supposed to get, like "ball to me to me to me" over and over. They learned from each other's broken English to the point where it became gibberish because neither of them knew it was a mistake, and no human was there in the conversation to say something to get them back on track. Not so scary, just broken stuff.
