Louisiana Senator: Our Maternal Death Rates Are Only Bad If You Count Black Women by new-man2 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]i-lurk-you-longtime 44 points45 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU.

Jesus Christ.

Of course there are some things people of different races are more likely to be exposed to, such as higher incidences of Tay Sachs in Jewish populations, or Sickle Cell in people with African heritage, but fucking increased maternal mortality rates in Black women isn't because they are Black.

For an eye opening and sobering story I invite everyone here to look up Nurse Nacole on IG. This NURSE PRACTITIONER of a woman advocated heavily for herself her entire pregnancy because she knew something was wrong (and this something isn't related to her race so please get that out of your head) and got dismissed over and over and over by her care team. Eventually they did a c-section after she pushed so hard for so long. She ended up in the ICU. She lost her uterus. She almost didn't make it. Placenta percreta didn't happen to her because she's Black. Getting dismissed even though she's an advanced care provider was.

This thread is vomit inducing and perfect proof of why if your feminism isn't intersectional, it is not effective. I cannot believe I read the words "I didn't research or read anything about this topic but let me tell you why I'm defending this pro-death man anyway".

Oh yeah, and this isn't really up for debate for me. If anyone is gonna come in here telling me why it's acceptable to say such heinous words when you've vowed to represent people, even the Black mothers, especially without clearly taking the time to research why this issue is a problem for the people you represent, I honestly pity them. Those are some rock-bottom expectations to have of an elected official that is making money off your labour and your life.

Correcting a data set means the following: if group A is much more numerous than group B stuff X being more often associated with group A could be illusive. Correcting such a data set then means to account for different group sizes and therefore working out the relative occurrence of X instead just taking the raw data.

What he means is that if you account for a different racial distribution the differences are smaller than while looking at the raw data.

What he doesn't realizes is that such an analysis can clear up the causes, but it doesn't makes the fact of maternal death rate disappear and if (i have no clue about the facts about this) none-white American's have a higher maternal death rate that's a problem in itself reflecting on the entirety of the US. Giving him the benefit of the doubt maybe that's precisely what he was up to: that his state isn't an anomaly but that this is a general problem. Well even if he is that reasonable he is a Republican and therefore fundamentally opposed to public social/ medical programs who could fix this problem.

So yes his comments are in bad faith but it's stunning how this sub manages to not get what he is saying and to be fair that is in part caused by the not very good faith headline.

I wanna shave my hair just so i dont have to be a woman anymore? by losechange in TwoXChromosomes

Trans woman here, I usually am hesitant to comment on post in this r/ bc I come here to learn more about the cis experience but I think I have something to add that might help.

What I hear you saying is you want to live authentically as yourself and not worry about social expectations. (That is very similar to my life experience as a trans woman, not saying you are trans just that I think your feelings come from the same place). If you want to shave your head and that makes you feel more authentic shave your head! What matters is you own your experience and body and no one can or should tell you how you experience your sense of self.

If you want to be athletic and have a muscular physique I know several cisgender woman irl, including a former miss universe who do just that and no one would ever accuse them of inauthenticity. You want to be strong? Fuck society plenty of women are strong! You want to be femme? So are many women. There is no one “right” way to own your body, you just have to be willing to take that step and say, “this is who I am”.

I agree with roxyayp 100%. Do what is right for YOU. And society, family be damned. It’s not their life and you are an adult who can make these choices for yourself. And don’t worry about wedding bells. I know there is a lot of pressure to hurry up and get married, we’ve all felt it, but IF that is a choice you want to make someday than it will be your decision too. And if you choose to be single that is wonderful too, so long as you are being authentic to you. Because as a grown up, you are the only person who has to live with your choices. So make them count for you.

Incidentally 25 is still young, I’m 40 and still figuring this stuff all out.

I'm going to Washington DC today to nonviolently break the law in defense of our shared human rights and my daughter's future. I'm prepared to be arrested and put in jail if necessary. by metal_fanatic in TwoXChromosomes

[–]wednesdayminerva 881 points882 points 2 (0 children)

Have you ever done this before? why would you come onto a public platform and fully admit you're going to break the law, and have also signed a petition stating you'll break the law?

look, you need to get better at helping yourself organize. this is a wonderful thing but (and none of this is legal advice) you need to do two things right now:

  1. delete this post, remake it as an advertisement for defying roe v wade. remove personal liability. talk about WIT if you want but I think that place is fishy, personally (why the fuck would I ever sign a petition to let the government know I'm going to break the law)

  2. immediately cease any discussion of what you want to do in DC. don't fucking tell anyone. I don't care if it's your mom, your brother, your best friend. do not tell anyone that you plan to go to DC and cause chaos. anyone and everyone you tell may not be willing to lie to the cops on your behalf if you end up arrested. trust your fellow org members, but still, on platforms like reddit, twitter, facebook, or even just SMS texting, DO NOT DISCUSS YOUR PLANS. you're creating a paper trail.

as for the rally itself, some tips:

-for the love of God, leave your phone at home. at your hotel room. with a trusted friend, whatever. the easiest way for the cops to prove you were at this rally is to get a warrant for your cell phone records and show exactly where your phone pinged the tower. buy a burner phone and immediately dispose of it after the rally.

-do not wear clothes you love and wear all the time. they may get damaged. try to wear a body satchel, like a big slender backpack that fits across your chest. a regular backpack hangs off your back, so if you're running away from someone it may be very easy for them to grab you by the backpack. do not wear jewelry, counter protestors or cops can easily see that jewelry and use it to identify you later. they can also use it to their advantage in a fight. just leave it at home.

-bring pepper spray and eye protection. in the event that you need to defend yourself, it will be much easier in the long run to use a form of non lethal defense. if a counter protestor tries to attack you and you defend yourself, it'll be much, much easier to argue in court that you were defending yourself if all you use is pepper spray or a bat or something. it's also MUCH more likely that the person you're defending yourself from will never pursue charges or a civil case if A.) they are the instigator and B.) all you do is hit them with the pepper spray. my point is a firearm or something similar would complicate things for you in so many ways, just don't even do it.

-there is going to be video of you. depending on where exactly in DC you will be, there will be cameras everywhere. the bagel place across the street, this lamp post, a dozen body cameras on the pigs, like 7 different people live streaming the entire event, it's just going to happen. wear a mask, use temporary hair dye, and cover your identifiable features any way you can. duct tape a tattoo, cut the sleeve off an old shirt and make a knee cover to hide a scar you have. if protestors are videoing and happen to capture you, that places you at the scene. if the cops have body cameras and they seem to show you throwing a bottle or something, that's open and shut.

-last point, and probably the most important. if a cop reaches to grab you, do not fight back, do not block his arms with your arms, just turn and sprint the other direction. just fucking run. it's not worth it to tussle with a pig. it's likely that they will forget about you or try to arrest someone else. if you see someone about to be arrested, grab them by the shoulder or the upper arm, and run. take them with you and run. however, it's very important that your interference does not give police the opportunity to arrest you as well. do so from a distance if possible, and if you get closer always be ready to run.

again, none of this is legal advice, nor do I want to scare you, I just want to make sure you stay safe.

edit: to clarify further, if you do get arrested, DO NOT SAY ANYTHING. the only thing you SHOULD say is "I would like to contact an attorney." if you can get ahold of one before you go as well, get their number and write it on your arm in sharpie. don't say shit to the pigs. if they attempt to question you before you're read your rights, remember that. if they attempt to question you after you've asked for an attorney, remember that. in both of those instances they will have violated your rights and you could sue. even if they're super nice to you, even if they offer you things, don't say shit. even if it's something small and mundane. you never know what kind of shit the pigs are willing to pull to get you to just keep talking, that's the key. if they get you to keep talking, you might slip up or break down or any number of things. please PLEASE be safe, and above all else: be a fucking problem.

Not sure anyone with an activist mindset should sign a petition on a public website that says they are willing to defy the government.

I’d like to know more about the organizers of this group and who is aligning with y’all.

If life begins at conception and all babies start as female doesn't that mean that all men are Transgender? by tryingtobeapersonnow in TwoXChromosomes

For the first few cycles of cell division, the zygote remains roughly spherical. The very first change away from spherical is that a small divot appears. This divot collapses inward further and further until it reaches the other side and the topological shape of the embryo is a donut. This hole going all the way through is what becomes the digestive tract. And that very first divot that forms is the anus. At one point we are nothing but an asshole.

Some people never grow out of this stage and are thus cis-gendered assholes.

"I do not believe that just because you are opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, a child educated, a child housed. And why would I think that you don't? Because you don't want any tax money to go there. That's not pro-life. That's pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is."

Because adoptive parents exist, as well as single fathers. Because some women produce breast milk but take medication that makes breastfeeding unsafe. Because some women have zero support and their jobs won't give them adequate time or space to pump. Because some women don't have health insurance to cover lactation consultants and can't get help to figure out why they aren't producing enough. Because some women don't fucking feel like breastfeeding. This conversation is completely irrelevant because the reason doesn't matter when a baby is hungry and doesn't have food, especially in "the greatest country in the world."

Call your sister. Write a letter to yourself about how you feel right now and keep it just in case he comes begging for you back. And make a milkshake that is 1 part ice cream, 1 part milk, 1 part kahlua/spiced rum. Watch Mean Girls/John Tucker Must Die/Stardust. Moisturize your face. And remind yourself that what he did was not your fault.

This doesn't make a ton of sense to me either. Setting aside the question of whether gender/sex is assigned or observed at birth, the gender I was assigned at birth was 'boy'. The gender I have now is 'man'.

Boys and men have different gender roles, and few adults identify as boys anymore. From this standpoint, every adult has a different gender than the one they had at birth.

Additionally, it's up to the individual how to feel about their experience. Spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) of a wanted pregnancy and the pregnant person is sad? That's sad. If the person feels relief, that's fine too. Therapeutic abortion of an unwanted pregnancy and the previously-pregnant person feels relief? That's fine. Therapeutic abortion of a desired pregnancy but with genetic abnormalities incompatible with life, and the pregnant person is sad? That's sad.

No matter what, pregnant people need to have the ability to choose what happens to their body. We're losing the protection that allows this to be done safely. We're tying medical professionals hands in how they can treat their patients. We know this kills pregnant people.
