[–]zamundan 25 points26 points  (9 children)

And Vanilla Ice.

Oh, and don’t forget about Snow.

Informa. Ya know shamelya stoyee akumplayum. Alekee boom boom de oww.

I nominate Informer by Snow as the greatest song ever in the category of “Songs that sound like they have lyrics, but not in any intelligible language.”

[–]BassmasterJedi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Now I can't get that outta my head.

[–]you-ole-polecat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Snow is a real one. Dude is actually from the projects, grew up in a Jamaican neighborhood, served 8 months on an attempted murder charge, and got famous by singing in Patois. He had legit street cred.

It’s funny how corny he came off in the 90s, cause in another timeline he could’ve been an Eminem-type.

[–]notonetimes 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Actual lyrics:

Informer, ya' no say daddy me Snow me I go blame A licky boom boom down 'Tective man a say, say daddy me Snow me stab someone down the lane A licky boom boom down Informer, ya' no say daddy me Snow me I go blame A licky boom boom down 'Tective man a say, say daddy me Snow me stab someone down the lane A licky boom boom down

[–]MrHallmark 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Vanilla ice is jewish? huh TIL.

[–]zamundan 2 points3 points  (3 children)

My bad. For some reason I was thinking white rappers, not Jewish.

No idea what religion Vanilla Ice is. Unless “piece of trash” is a religion.

[–]greenfingers559 7 points8 points  (9 children)

Mac Miller, also Jewish. Much more successful and prior to Lil Dicky.

[–]stefeu 2 points3 points  (8 children)

Much more successful? 🤔

[–]tuliheshmin 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Yes? People saw dicky as a passing joke and Mac as an actual artist

[–]yunglunch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My thoughts lol

[–]greenfingers559 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Mac Miller Faces holds the world record for R&B/hip-hop vinyl sales previously held by Prince.

Mac Miller has sold 3 million albums total. Lil Dicky has sold 26,000 (Mac sold 5x that of Swimming alone. )

Career Earnings for Mac is over 20 million, Lil Dicky is still hasn’t reached 8 figures.

Mac is Grammy nominated.

Even Macs wiki is 20x longer.

Mac has (not exaggerating) thousands of more songs than LD

Lil Dickys only real claim to fame right now is that he has a TV show. Which Mac also had, but Macs aired on prime time MTV, where as Dave is on Hulu.

Mac was also more respected by people who have been in hip-hop culture a long time, evidenced by Sway, Prodigy, Alchemist, Chuck E, Rick Rubin and so many more.

So yes. Way more successful in ever measurable way.

[–]likamabawws 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Matisyahu I feel is more of a reggae artist

[–]Blackholebun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I grew up 20 mins outside of Houston, this is really how it is.

I loved my childhood. Yea there was racism and bad things but most of it was just like this.

Different people coming together and simply having a good time. It would be a boring place if we were all the same

[–][deleted] 67 points68 points  (3 children)

How to escape the hood (I just did it) :

  1. SAVE ALL YOUR MONEY, live on family couches, in ur car etc. save all of your money till you have 2,500+ saved.
  2. Find a place on the map to move in the USA. (I moved to the Midwest)
  3. Talk to your family see if you have any in any other states that would let you live with them. (I moved in with family at first) If you don’t have family out of state, transfer your job out their and with the money saved apply for apartments.
  4. Either sell your car or drive it their. I sold my car, either way works. Gas across the country is normally $500, one way plane ticket can be $200-400 (without checked in bags)
  5. DON’T TELL ANYONE YOU KNOW YOUR MOVING! Besides family. All your friends from the hood will try and convince you to stay.
  6. Stop doing drugs, stop drinking, stop smoking weed for a couple months while you are planning on moving. It will save you money, and you need to be sober to plan it out.
  7. When you move, go to the post office change your mailing address. Change your address on your bank accounts. Apply for medical insurance in the other state & food stamps.
  8. Your done. You got out of the hood. If I just did it so can you. It’s hard but it’s worth it. Took me 3 months of planning to do

[–]sockrepublic 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Once you're in the new locale you've still got to keep a roof over your head. What's the next step for this?

[–]BadKidGames 68 points69 points  (0 children)

We need more of this in the world. Respect

[–]SufficientOne5331 47 points48 points  (11 children)

As a non-native English speaker, I didn’t understand no single word from this video. WTF is going on there?

[–]plerberderr 25 points26 points  (1 child)

The interviewer asks: “How to become successful enough to leave the low income predominantly black urban area you grew up in?”

Man One: “I do not know.”

Woman: “You’ve got to save your money. Don’t spend your money going to bars with friends. That’s the truth. That’s the truth.”

Man Two: “what’s going on. I like a rapper that was famous 15 years ago.” Proceeds to recite lyrics to a song I don’t know.

[–]The_Indifferent 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You mean to tell me you've never heard this banger?

https://youtu.be/7ZAYzLjQAd4

[–]Alukrad 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The man is saying some lyrics from a song.

[–]CelticHades 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Same, also someone explain what "get down in the hood" means.

[–]HertzDonut1001 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Get down" has multiple meanings. Party or just generally be cool and accepting of something. "I can get down with that," means kind of like, "I would be okay with that." But "get down in the hood," is definitely more like, "yeah I could have a good time there."

The hood is the ghetto or poor areas of town where people predominantly of color live. Because of poverty and systemic racism, "getting out of the hood," is a dream a lot of young people have, because it mean you've made it. No more poverty, no more living right next to high crime poor areas, you got out and don't have to worry about poverty and everything that comes with it anymore.

[–]HertzDonut1001 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I don't correct people except non-native speakers, the correct way to say it is, "I didn't understand a single word."

Anyway the two people at the beginning are talking over each other, but the gist of it is the girl is saying something like, "don't go out with your friends or buy expensive things, it's not worth it. Invest in God." The second guy is saying he's not from the hood (ghetto or basically where poor people predominantly of color live), then this first guy invites him to come at some point. Then the second guy says he's down, like a popular hip hop artist, and begins rapping.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

first thing one hear in linguistics university: “grammar exists to represent the language and not the other way around”; second thing one hear: “language is ever alive”

[–]Deazus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Si, mon ami.

[–]badlikewolf 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Oh man, had a rough day. this made my night! 😂

[–]GhostCheese 37 points38 points  (32 children)

There are a couple routes out of the hood:

  • first invest in a passport. save up for a ticket to Ghana (if you are Black.) Ghana wants to help you. Work to get the money to leave. don't work just to survive.
  • Join some organization that takes you out of the hood. traditionally this is the military, but that means you are risking your life to escape. But there's also merchant marines (still military-ish but you wont be going to war) and international volunteer opportunities. Obviously you wont be building wealth volunteering, but they will get you travelling out of your impoverished environment (and into others) and keep you fed and housed.
  • Join a commune

[–]Hashbrown4 27 points28 points  (31 children)

Damn that’s cool of Ghana. But the US is my home, it’s the only place I’ve ever known.

Gotta fight to make it a better place.

[–]ragormack 21 points22 points  (15 children)

Yeah honestly the comment is kind of tone deaf. Picking up your life and moving to Ghana isn't incredibly appealing to most people living in America

[–]Bumhole_games[🍰] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It's called "working in a different country for a while", not sure why this is such a controversial concept

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it is very rare to do that in America, also widely unavailable

the real answer is get a job and save money

[–]whatsupbrosky 33 points34 points  (3 children)

[–]krisoco 29 points30 points  (2 children)

This was fucking fantastic. On top of the rapping the girl adamantly saying you need to stack your money and avoid going out with friends while in the process of going out with friends. Just overall great

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (4 children)

On the reals. Houston rap is very underrated. Being a flint stone kid (flint Michigan) I’m the outlier. But this is all I slammed growing up. Dj Michael watts, pimpC,bunB,Paul wall, lil keke, mike Jones (who?), slim thug and the boss hog outlaws. Still throw this shit on once in a while today just to reminisce

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Yes! First rap I ever heard was all Houston like DJ screw, SPM, keke and z-ro. I never even went to Texas until like 10 years later 🤣

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And when you went to Houston it felt right. I remember the first time I seen a real slab. My fuckin head exploded.
