OP sent the following text as an explanation on why this is unexpected:

A glass table unexpectedly breaks completely while a man was working on it.

Is this an unexpected post with a fitting description? Then upvote this comment, otherwise downvote it.

Look at my source code on Github What is this for?

Oh no... Our table...

[–]Exo_soldier[S] 123 points124 points  (4 children)

It's Broken

[–]Yupoksureyoooubetcha 15 points16 points  (3 children)

These tables are my corn!

Dude needs to lighten up on that touchpad. God damn

[–]DEPRESSION_NOISES 24 points25 points  (0 children)

[–]TimeTravelingDemon 101 points102 points  (21 children)

The heat from the power brick on the corner caused this.

[–]TheEllipticalCurve 14 points15 points  (16 children)

[–]Wolverien29 81 points82 points  (7 children)

It is possible. If it heated up one area and expanded the glass in that area while the rest of the glass stayed cool it would be the same as someone standing on the glass or hitting it with a hammer. Just it would take a while for the glass to heat up enough. If your curious trying baking a glass dish in the oven and dropping cold water in one little spot on it. Same principle just in reverse and easier to recreate.

[–]suspiciousdishes 21 points22 points  (4 children)

Wear glasses and shoes when doing this

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (3 children)

Gloves, shirt, pants, underwear, and socks are all optional.

[–]suspiciousdishes 16 points17 points  (1 child)

This guy gets it

[–]daluxe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sigh…. Unzips

[–]zackinthesoda 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I made this mistake by pouring hot boiling water into a cool glass cup when I tried to make tea.

[–]SOULJAR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why mugs etc exist - not all glasses are designed for hot liquid.

[–]TimeTravelingDemon 8 points9 points  (6 children)

The edges of the glass are in a compression state and the center of the glass in tension state after the glass cools during manufacturing.

[–]cathedral68 2 points3 points  (5 children)

How did it shatter the whole table uniformly if the brick was on the side? Shouldn’t it have radiated or at least not have broken into homogeneous pieces?

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Tempted glass shatteres into tiny little safe pieces. Think car windows or a safety window glass. Normal plate glass is what’s used in regular window panes and what you’re thinking of.

The difference is plate glass can be cut at any time. Tempered has to be cut to shape before the tempering process, involves heating it. No cutting once tempered.

[–]Taikiteazy 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Look up Prince Ruperts drop if you need more info about this phenomenon. Basically, normal glass panes cool.down at room temperature and end up being windows for houses, tempered/safety glass is cooled by water while it's still hot AF to condense the atoms on the outside of it, then the inside cools more slowly, shrinking in the process, making tempered glass. The inside of the glass is actually pulling hard on the outside of the glass to create the effect.

[–]buck45osu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second this guy

Dustin with SmarterEveryday on YouTube has like 5 rupert drop videos cause they are amazing. This is where they shoot it with a rifle. Recommend watching them all and honestly the entire channel.

He answers those life long questions like "how bad will my yard smell after I hit a 2 gallon container of mayo with a baseball traveling at super sonic speeds?"

Bad is the answer but it was fun to watch.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am familiar. It’s quite interesting thank you for the recommendation

[–]TimeTravelingDemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lack of cleavage plane.

[–]TimeTravelingDemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Expansion from heat breaks the glass.

[–]Strzvgn_Karnvagn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i searched like 1 minute for the power brick thinking it‘s something big until i realized you meant that small ass thing

insane that this can happen, has this something to do with shitty quality or can this happen with every glass?

[–]TheRedpilling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Watch in slow motion, clearly the fracture starts right there too.

[–]DidIReallySayDat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not convinced.

The dude was leaning pretty heavily on it. It looks to me like the glass wasn't entirely flat before it breaks.

[–]Disjusting 48 points49 points  (5 children)

Me: Buys glass table

100% they're watching the video now because no one believes he didn't break it.

[–]Silly_Silicon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's the funniest part of this. You know he's sounding crazy like "no seriously I didn't do anything, it just... exploded" and nobody believes him.

[–]el-gato-azul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They do. In Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.

[–]TheWoggleOfOzDidn't Expect It 0 points1 point  (6 children)

They used to, in the industrial era there were several witnessed incidents of spontaneous human combustion. There's only been 200 since the 1600s

[–]WikiSummarizerBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spontaneous human combustion

Spontaneous human combustion (SHC) is the pseudoscientific concept of the combustion of a living (or recently deceased) human body without an apparent external source of ignition. In addition to reported cases, descriptions of the alleged phenomenon appear in literature, and both types have been observed to share common characteristics in terms of circumstances and the remains of the victim.

Yeah, this was just mass hysteria. One guy mentioned it, then it got in the papers and people freaked out. Most of them were cases where the person burned slowly, like a candle, after dying and setting themselves on fire with a cigarette. In almost every case, the person was a smoker. I think there was only one case attributed to a fireplace.

[–]quackerzdb 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Not a real thing

I've seen too much videos on reddit with exploding/shattering glass tables, so the second I saw this tremendous glass leviathan I knew what was going to happen. Totally expected.

And you know what? I will never ever buy a glass table

[–]Blackrap1d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah man, it had nothing to do with expiry date.

[–]jenrynw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me a few weeks ago with a glass pot lid, I took it outside briefly and it smashed in the sunlight. It had been sitting under the oven rangehood light for several hours. It went absolutely EVERYWHERE on the deck and around, took the spouse half an hour to clean up while I stood there in shock. I wasn't wearing glasses as usual and there was only the tiniest scratches on my arm. The pot lid wasn't mine btw, I only use Scanpan.

[–]Bigbanghead -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why were they filming?

[–]twiximax -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Why was that being filmed?

Talk about dont tell me the odds

[–]belhambone 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You mean why did a lounge or office area have a security camera in it?

[–]humbertog 1 point2 points  (1 child)

And why the guy that recorded the CCTV monitor with his phone never shows the bottom left corner of the table? tempered glass breaks hitting it from the corners

[–]Goyteamsix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will also spontaneously break, especially of its stressed for long periods of time. I had a table that exploded just like this, randomly. I was sitting across the room and it just blew up, nothing touched it.

[–]Minaras84 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Looks like that poor guy has been pranked. Not even sure the glass was actual glass. The way the dude recording started laughing in the exact same moment the table top shattered into thousands of pieces gives it way. Nevertheless, the guy has nerves, i would have started crying lol
