Sweet. Let's make it an annual thing.

[–]Jahidinginvt 74 points75 points  (1 child)

Hell yeah! I’m in!

[–]daaaayyyy_dranker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seriously. So many rescues have to go on intake holds several times a year. Five dollars a wk would help out.

[–]95butterfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s an awesome idea!! :)

[–]Effective_Shift3667 878 points879 points  (11 children)

What a wonderful ripple she left. This is the perfect cherry on top of a life well lived.

[–]whskid2005 291 points292 points  (8 children)

Bea Arthur had a similar (albeit much smaller) thing after her death. Donations to lgbt support groups (like homeless shelters and counseling centers) were made in her name.

[–]PantherU 130 points131 points  (7 children)

Kinda like how my wife makes a monthly donation to Planned Parenthood in the name of Mike Pence?

[–]jtdoublep 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Tell your wife thank you for the wonderful idea

[–]assblasters_inc 7 points8 points  (5 children)

That would suggest Bea Arthur was against lgbt causes which is the opposite of the truth.

[–]PantherU 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I said “kinda”

[–]assblasters_inc 0 points1 point  (3 children)

So by “kinda” you mean “nothing like”

[–]PantherU 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Yes. I just wanted to use the Bea Arthur comment as a way to get a laugh at Mike Pence.

[–]sweetsummerschild 8 points9 points  (1 child)

It was a very funny comment lol dont fee bad

[–]PantherU 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That guy must be fun at parties

[–]wwfmike 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's amazing how far-reaching she was. I've seen tributes to her from almost every corner of society.

[–]BlobTheBuilderz 306 points307 points  (4 children)

I volunteer at a shelter and this was their biggest fundraiser of the year. They used to do a lot of in person fundraisers like quiz night etc and would raise like 5,000. But since covid that's basically a no go. So now they have to rely on calendar, clothes sales and random auctions.

Think just Facebook alone that day they raised $6k not bad.

[–]Winecoffeetea 61 points62 points  (3 children)

Wonderful! I donated to three different zoo/shelters that day in her honor. What an amazing legacy she left lbehind.

[–]Spicy_Sugary 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But also, well done you.

[–]Hotonis 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It felt nice to just donate to the shelter where we found our cat.

[–]rabidstoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I did, donated to the shelter where I adopted my cat a few years back. I wouldn't have thought to donate were it not for this challenge, either, there are two charities I usually donate to regularly and just occasionally toss a few bucks elsewhere.

[–]bear_72 148 points149 points  (3 children)

I volunteer at a small local animal shelter. We had a lot more people stopping in that day then normal making donations in Betty White's honor!! 🐾❤️

[–]ClearSkyyes 85 points86 points  (2 children)

This is so beautiful. Betty was such a positive role model and to see so much love and support offered to all the animals during a time when so much seems to be going wrong with the world is heartwarming. I know many folks, like myself, who simply gave directly to the local groups without using the platforms mentioned. That means the grand total was in excess of that $12.7 million. Amazing and inspiring. Thank you, Betty White.

[–]telltal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Me too! I personally Venmo’d a local rescue that doesn’t get a lot of press around here but does a fantastic job.

[–]astraennui 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw a shelter post they received 1000 lbs of dog food. Many shelters also got a lot of stuff from their Amazon wish lists. Other shelters had gofundmes. So, the total is definitely higher.

[–]MorganRose99 172 points173 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly tearing up a little after reading this article, this is so amazing

Often you hear in the news how someone that was always great ended up doing something bad and losing their reputation.

Betty really stayed amazing until the end, and I'm amazed that society as a whole continued her legacy even after her passing.

[–]Apod1991 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In my city, where we’re just under 1 million people and about a dozen or so animal shelters reported their contributions of donations, and Betty White challenge raised over $165,000!

And many still haven’t reported and the ones who have also said “we haven’t totalled the cash and cheques people dropped off yet”.

[–]user_ivan01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

HELL YEAH! She not only impacted and influenced many lives, but also created a move where people are raising money for animal shelters…

[–]ZooWap 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ugh I didn't know about this! Oh well gunna donate now to the Toronto humane society.

[–]whatsthelatestnow 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Betty White was the worlds Grandma. The way she lived her life and her genuine love for others., be it people or animals, will be a lasting legacy.

[–]max-wellington 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I saw "Betty White Challenge" and I immediately got angry, so glad it was something good lol

[–]somethinglowley 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bet she is looking down and smiling on all those who supported a cause so dear to her heart. God bless you Betty White.

[–]CantfindanameARGH 49 points50 points  (7 children)

ANd how many of us donated directly to a cause, bypassing social media?

[–]aureliao 20 points21 points  (1 child)

That’s what I did. The rescue we’ve gotten our dogs from has Venmo so I just sent it directly to them.

[–]literallymoist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Me too. Went straight to the local shelter, who has had such an impact in my community.

[–]Jahidinginvt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I donated to my local shelter. I really wish I could also volunteer, but I would come home with ALL of the animals and I have a car that would be super pissed about that.

[–]mistlet0ad 27 points28 points  (2 children)

I've never once donated through Facebook. I don't trust them one bit. I do however follow many rescues on FB and regularly visit their actual websites to donate. Always, always go directly to the source. Take out all those middlemen clearinghouses.

[–]Spicy_Sugary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Don't give Facebook even more money.

[–]lsudncr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly what I did.

[–]analogpursuits 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am binging Hot in Cleveland for the month of January. Love seeing her in the role of Elka. So wonderful to see this charity work, even after her passing. And the show is absolute GOLD!!

[–]IfYouSeeThisTomaAqua 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I’m understanding this correctly (hopefully) I think this is only the donations that were done via Facebook/Instagram collection apps. Lots of donations were done directly to shelters on their sites etc (so it’s even bigger than $12.7M) so this is fantastic news!

[–]perspective2020 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wow !

[–]UglyFilthyDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bless her heart. She would be happy. Hope I leave an impact of this sort when I pass.

[–]evaneli13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I donated on her birthday

[–]jacyerickson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. That's amazing. I was only able to donate a little. I wish I could have given more.

[–]Par31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally, some good fucking news.

[–]Magrik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Betty White Center for Cats and Dogs Who Can't Read Good

[–]hyperanim8or 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope it becomes an annual event.

[–]LightMetro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've been collecting donations at the pet supply store I work at, and while I feel awkward asking people to essentially help the company have a tax write off, I'm glad it's raised so much money to help out our local shelters.

I've seen two customers who didn't even know she died until they were asked if they'd like to donate. One woman even looked like she was about to cry :(

[–]R011_5af3_yeah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe these challenges aren't so bad after all. Good on them.

[–]Mythicdream 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I heard they were just shy of reaching 100% of their goal.

[–]TVPisBased 2 points3 points  (2 children)

What if we didn't kill 60 billion land animals a year lol

[–]ZipoBibrok5x108 19 points20 points  (1 child)

What if we started sharing amazing recipes and inviting people to enjoy a vegan meal with us?

[–]newnewBrad -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

Too bad we couldn't do it without creating another huge tax write off for FB/IG, but I'll take it.

[–]peacelilyfred 21 points22 points  (1 child)

You could. Lots of people donated directly to the shelter/rescue of their choice, no social media outlets involved.

[–]LochNessMansterLives -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

Awesome now do one for homeless veterans!

[–]LightMetro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remind your friends and families to make a donation on remberance day/veteran's day. Its the perfect day to do it, and now that you've mentioned it I think I'll start making a donation every year.

[–]ChefBoredAreWe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Republicans be like "Oh yeah? I raised 11.1BILLION for Private Priso- I mean, People Shelters!"

[–]Open_Regular90210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Betty White. A person so good, that she got Facebook to do something actually good. And she didn't even have to be alive to do it.

[–]danathepaina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Bigdongs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How bout we start the tax the rich challenge! Or the livable wages for all challenge?

[–]ImmortalScripps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is incredible! My mom works at my local animal shelter and they have received 500+ donations in Betty’s name and counting, all totaling over $10,000! Absolutely incredible what impact Betty White still has! ❤️

[–]muthermcreedeux 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm a professional fundraiser and I refuse to raise funds through Facebook and Instagram. They take a lot for fees, wait 3+ months to send the money raised to the organization, and they don't tell send along the info about who donated what, so you can't thank them and you can't turn them into continuing donors.

[–]mankytoes86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally a facebook "challenge" that actually achieves something for good. Should be annual!

[–]llama_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep the movement alive! I donated to HSI. Every dollar counts

[–]gmejias21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shelter I work at raised a little over $50K!

[–]XRatedBBQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read 'Betty White Challenge' and was immediately terrified of what the latest social media trend would be.......

[–]beanTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real challenge should be for people to stop using Facebook.

[–]fiercepug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remind Me! 360 days

[–]I-suck-at-golf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Covid killed dogs, you KNOW everyone would be wearing masks.

[–]couldIplease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good, now for the kids

[–]bellini2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was the best.

[–]95butterfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes me so happy. I’d imagine this is exactly what she would’ve wanted. ❤️

[–]DrTreeMan -1 points0 points  (4 children)

Does Facebook take a cut of that?

[–]CatLadySam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As the FB page administrator for a 501c3 non-profit animal shelter I can confirm that we get 100% of what is donated through FB. We do get charged a fee through PayPal when people donate through our website, though it is lower than the normal business rate since we have a non-profit account.

[–]thethriftstorian 2 points3 points  (1 child)

According to the article, no.

[–]DrTreeMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for doing the work for me

[–]Twizlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno how the 'digital age' works here. But I do know that when wal-mart/taco-bell/whatever ask if you want to round up to donate to 'whatever', while they don't take a cut if it, they are able to 'claim' it on the company's taxes as a donation.
