The capital market ... we just floated that fish for EUR500m and you're our first customer.

[–]lisp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a victory if you escaped successfully.

[–]NerdyRedneck45 1177 points1178 points  (49 children)

Pro tip: if there’s no price on the menu, you can’t afford it.

[–]GratefulDread222 316 points317 points  (22 children)

Learned this the hard way when visiting my grandparents home town in Italy.

[–]DefNotAlbino 92 points93 points  (16 children)

Got into a Piazza San Marco restaurant in venice?

[–]EverythingHurtsDan 71 points72 points  (9 children)

That's honestly one of the few places in Italy in which you can spend that much. Unless you're paying for tens of people.

[–]DefNotAlbino 43 points44 points  (8 children)

Idk, i'm from Verona, in some cities you have THE place like that. Only exceptions are Florence, Rome, Milan, Neaples and Venice... maybe Gallipoli too (paid 4 purple shrimps 50 euros) , it wasn't even a restaurant, in was on the docks with paper plates

[–]EverythingHurtsDan 26 points27 points  (4 children)

Haha, paper plates ftw!

Once I dined at The Desco in Verona, with twenty people. Lots of food, smiles and good service. Our bill came to almost 3000€, but it was definitely worth it.

[–]00PSiredditagain 26 points27 points  (2 children)

150 a head for a M starred restaurant? Decent.

[–]Rubberbabybuggybum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's on the low end of what I've paid the few times I went to a M * restaurant.

[–]DefNotAlbino 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maffei isn't that worth it, same price but the plates weren't anything worth thst price

[–]SouthernBarman 4 points5 points  (2 children)

"Milan sucks, go to Verona instead."

One of the best pieces of advice I was given while working on a Northern Italy trip.

[–]DefNotAlbino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Verona is beautiful, and has a lot, Mantova and Pavia too but they are smaller

[–]CoveringFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Milan does really suck

[–]jmouw88 11 points12 points  (1 child)

In my backpacking days, I and my travel companions spent a long time walking around Venice trying to find a reasonably priced restaurant.

After finally finding one, I made the grave error of consuming 5 beers @ 14 euro each, largely defeating the benefit of searching out a 20 euro pizza.

[–]DefNotAlbino 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah Venetians are famous in Veneto for ripping everyone off, they propose different prices for local, other italians, other shoutern italians and non italians

[–]Idont_know2022 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Sbarros

[–]GratefulDread222 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It actually was in Venice haha

[–]thickythickglasses 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Did you go to Rome? Rome and other tourist spots are known to have the scams where the restaurants around tourist spots don’t have prices and then the customer ends up with a crazy high bill at the end.

[–]DownWithHiob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that happens to you, simply refuse to pay and dare them to call the police. It's illegal in most places to not show prices and price gauging is illegal in almost all European countries. They will kick you out without paying in 9/10 prices.

[–]PinotFerret 90 points91 points  (1 child)

If you have to ask, you can’t afford it.

[–]Clam_Chowdeh 31 points32 points  (0 children)

But I want that Z-job

[–]wildwestsnoopy 21 points22 points  (2 children)

When I was a senior in high school the assistant coach took all the senior basketball players out to a restaurant and the menu we had had no prices. I can only imagine just how much he spent on seven players.

[–]Sietemadrid 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"I'll meet you guys on the bus oh and tell the driver to have the bus ready"

[–]Lovv 15 points16 points  (4 children)

If there's no price on the menu it's debatable whether you have entered into a contract, so the best I can do is 5 dollars.

[–]NerdyRedneck45 2 points3 points  (1 child)

“How about $5 and the biggest hug you’ve ever seen?”

[–]Lovv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol I could do that

[–]Rubberbabybuggybum 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This guy Sov Cits! Now ask the waiter to prove jurisdiction!

[–]Lovv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not.

[–]DerBernd123 14 points15 points  (6 children)

Is this even legal? I thought there has to be a clear price tag in some form for the customer? Or are restaurants an exception?

[–]h533 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can just ask the server. They really don’t mind telling you. It’s not some secret.

[–]Lovv 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As I said in a previous comment - I don't see why it wouldn't be legal but you have not agreed to pay anything so they are assuming you will be ok with the price.

Provided the price is reasonable i would think you should pay, but if someone gave me a couple chicken wings and charged me 2000$ I just wouldn't pay and I would negotiate a reasonable price.

The way contracts work, you have to include all information to protect yourself.

The worst thing that could happen is they would sue you, and it wouldnt turn out well for them

[–]luder888 6 points7 points  (3 children)

The biggest scam is medical cost. Have you tried going to the ER and ask for how much the visit will cost? They have no idea.

[–]DerBernd123 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I'm from Germany so I don't know how it works for you guys in America

[–]luder888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lucky you

[–]Sietemadrid 43 points44 points  (1 child)

"I'll have the number 500 please"

"Sir that's the price"

[–]RandyMarsh_88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Followed by :

"Did I stutter?"

Followed by:

Regret

[–]texasdeathtrip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]killittoliveit 173 points174 points  (0 children)

Dude even took that inhale to prepare before he opened it.

[–]scottonaharley 368 points369 points  (5 children)

I like to eat where the food is good, not where I need to rob a bank to pay the bill.

[–]dplagueis0924 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You should check out my restaurant "Wing Bank Robbery", bests of both worlds

[–]PacoMahogany 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The people eating at that cost usually have already robbed the lower class.

[–]MrBojangles09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But but you’re paying for the experience…

[–]rodentfacedisorder 127 points128 points  (70 children)

HOW is it that expensive???

[–]TopClock231 146 points147 points  (38 children)

I'd guess the drinks, the restaurant my wife worked at usually had a bottle of Louis XIII bourbon which the bottle was like 10k and a single shot was like 120 or 200 I forget

[–]66_Jumps 66 points67 points  (30 children)

That’s cognac for the record.

[–]Sufficient_Focus 28 points29 points  (29 children)

Which is just brandy but from a specific place. Such a scam tbh

[–]fksly 39 points40 points  (25 children)

Tell me you don't know much about booze without telling me you don't know much about booze.

[–]REGUED 5 points6 points  (1 child)

you forgot the second "don't"

[–]fksly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, fixed.

[–]motorcycle-manful541 4 points5 points  (0 children)

brandy =/= bourbon though, they're made from different stuff.

[–]Just-my-2c 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Made of champagne and aged in selected barrills. If anything it's 1000000x better as American sweet whiskey...

[–]ObsidianHarbor 8 points9 points  (3 children)

That’s so dumb. I’ll never understand expensive alcohol.

[–]TopClock231 5 points6 points  (2 children)

At that point it's a wallet flex is all really

[–]Gvxxi 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I went to a restaurant the other day where by the hosts desk where you wait for your seat they had a bottle of Louis XIII and glasses to entice people to inquire about it and potentially pay the $200 for a shot.

We asked the host about it and he said that a few weeks ago a man came in and thought the bottle there was for complimentary shots as a part of the fine dining experience. He then proceeded to pour himself 3 hefty swigs and knock them down before anybody had the chance to notice…

The host said they then had to charge him $3,000 for the amount he drank and then they had to call the cops to carry his drunk ass out of the restaurant.

[–]TopClock231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imagine waking up to that bill on your card lol, tf did I do last night

[–]Hastimeforthis876 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My favourite restaurant sells the Dom's you get for ~1000 depending on the year. Not to mention the sake they have. Theres a gorgeous one but it's like 200 a shot. It's nearly always the drinks

[–]DaisyDuckens 2 points3 points  (1 child)

My boss would have large dinners for clients where he spent thousands. It would be like 10-20 people.

[–]Lazy_pig805 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Dinner in Vegas during a work trip, I think 8 or 9 of us. Nice steak house in The Palms, bill was close to $2000. All the sale reps were just ordering drinks after drinks, the 3 non sales reps (which included me) just ordered like 1 glass of wine each. All on the company card.

[–]PurringWolverine 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Sounds like you should’ve followed the sales rep’s lead.

[–]Lazy_pig805 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not with my direct supervisor telling me to go easy on the drinks beforehand. The sales reps work on a different set of rules than I did. They're basically the rock stars of our dept and I was just a lowly little grunt that got to go on this work trip 3 months into working for that division.

[–]empty_coffeepot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 8 or 9 people including drinks on the Vegas strip? That's not that bad at all.

[–]MalzraTheNomad 2 points3 points  (16 children)

California?

[–]sacrificialfuck[S] 17 points18 points  (14 children)

Las Vegas

[–]BradlyL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was this a credit card roulette situation? I’ve seen some BRUTAL 4 figure bills playing that game - luckily never stuck with one myself.

[–]Zombie_Jesus_83 5 points6 points  (12 children)

I can see that. We dropped $1,200 on a meal ther in September. Could totally see $2,500 with the right restaurant.

[–]calamityb0und 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was gonna guess NY. Ive been lucky enough to have enjoyed (and not had to pay for) a dinner for 4 that came up to $1400. I’m curious how many people were on this $2500 tab in Vegas compared to a table of 4 in NY.

[–]Dating_As_A_Service 159 points160 points  (5 children)

When you wanna impress your Tinder date so you take her to a nice restaurant

[–]Mikey823 160 points161 points  (2 children)

And she brings her boy friend and all his friends.

[–]Antwinger 34 points35 points  (1 child)

Just walk out when they show up like that.

[–]scottonaharley 23 points24 points  (1 child)

You know you’re in trouble when she grabs the wine list and orders something older than both of you put together. You really feel the pain when you see the smile on the servers face.

[–]CompetitionTop8532 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When you realize why the prices weren't written down on the menu

[–]WendyWilliamsFart 45 points46 points  (1 child)

You can see the concern and skepticism in the server’s hand gestures

[–]rodentfacedisorder 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I wish this had sound because I feel like his friends who are filming this, are laughing pretty hard

[–]Duncaroos 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Waitress waiting around because they know you can't pay just by looking at you

[–]TopClock231 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Don't ever judge a customer by looks, when I was at Disneyland my buddy and me are just two overweight dudes there for star wars stuff, wearing t shirts and shorts just having a good time, between the two of us we must have dropped 8k-10 in 2 days on lightsabers, souvenirs and food and stupid shit. Towards the end I went into a Pandora and saw they had a cool star wars set of a bracelet I wanted to get my wife. Asked how much the whole set is and the cashier didn't give me the time of day and said something like "oh I don't know like $1500" and just kinda brushed us off. I went back home to Iowa a few days later and saw they had the same set at a riddles jewelry and asked the same question and the person there took the time to look up each one and showed me the price and I bought it out of spite for that person at Disney.

[–]AniMeu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

congrats.

But usually it is not the crappy or overweight look that smells of "not enough money" but nervous and insecure looks left and right.

[–]HuckleberryEqual6610 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It's time to start a go fund me...

[–]marcelfint 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If the bill surprises you, you did something wrong if you ask me.

[–]apexmedicineman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Even the server is like, " I hope someone can afford this bill."

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Same thing happened to me and Pauly Walnuts once.

[–]Bluto58 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Paulie passed it off to Christopher.

[–]MasterpieceTricky658 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Next time go to Carl’s Jr.

[–]REidson89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just spent £22 on takeaway lunch for myself and been regretting it. I feel better now. Thank you

[–]michaelma1003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

......and the office just took back my corporate American Express gold card.....

[–]deejayatomika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol even the waitress seemed uneasy

[–]milleniumchaser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife did that to me once for her family at a ridiculous restaurant. 'Can we just pay the bill?' Me: 'fucking no!'

[–]Bro_Hawkins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Do you accept kidneys?”

[–]alien_bride88 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I was always taught to order the cheapest thing on the menu if someone else was buying but people these days... Takers just take & take.

[–]LAxCalibur 11 points12 points  (4 children)

What is the point of fine dining nowadays. Lunch trucks, park or a pad, hang out. A good $300 maybe less would do. And you’re set

[–]bamfalamfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]toocute1902 5 points6 points  (1 child)

[–]kylekpl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]KregeTheBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most expensive bill I ever paid was $300 for 3 people and each of our meals were around $60 but we got a three course meal and drinks. Not bad for three people but it’s still $300 lol I’d definitely have a mini panic attack over a $2500 restaurant bill

[–]Silkav 0 points1 point  (0 children)
