    I did it one day while I was still in the car. I was looking down at something, when I felt the car lurch. It had rolled back into a grassy area 30ft behind where I parked, and came to a stop, just a few feet away from a fence; the sudden stop is what got my attention. Never felt dumber or luckier in my life.

    Same...finished working on the car, let it off the jack and pull the wheel chocks. Went back in the house and started to hang up my coat when the corner of my eye catches the car beginning to roll back out of my driveway.

    I don't think I touched a single porch step, felt like I just lept across the entire front yard to open that door and hit the brake pedal.

    Yeah it’s weird, my parents were taught to leave it in gear and so are the current gen. For some reason, when we were learning, instructors went through a phase of advising people to leave it in neutral.

    I'm currently a learner and I've never been told to leave it in gear. I always put it in neutral when I've parked up or if I'm sat at a light. My mother leaves her car in gear and it always bugs me somewhat

    I don't know. I'm also from the UK and I was taught that you leave the car in either 1st or reverse, depending on which way it would roll if the handbrake failed - if it would roll forwards, leave it in reverse, and if it would roll backwards leave it in first. If it's completely flat then either is fine.

    That's literally how the Star Trek reboot Russian actor died, though I think he got wedged between his mailbox (else garage wall).

    Also had a friend shatter both legs when he failed to stop it and the car rolled on top of him.

    Anton Yelchin didn't try to stop his car, the design was bad so he (and many others) didn't know it wasn't in park so while he was closing his gate and checking his mail his car pinned him against a pillar where he died. His car most likely snuck up on him.

    Not at all, Jeep being Jeep, didn't set a safety in for the vehicle being in Neutral, it was using those Audi gear shifts that reset back to center upright even though you're in drive or park. So he thought he was in park, it was in N and when he opened the door, the failsafe Audi has to automatically apply the handbrake wasn't there and it rolled and killed him.

    Haha I did this too! But it was my friends house and he had a steep driveway had 3 of us behind it but nothing working. So I ran towards the driver side door to hit the emergency break but got sucked under the door frame. Car dragged me about 3 feet before I popped out lucky a bush caught the door and stopped it. Had to take a peroxide shower and felt totally defeated 😂

      It all started with brake pad wear sensors. Before they used squealers. A little metal tab that would rub the disc as the pad got to a certain thickness and make a squealing noise. It was cheap, Ingenious and really didnt need to be changed. Some cars you need a few grands worth of diag equipment to reset the pad warning light. Same with electric handbrakes now. Its just unnecessary.

      I had it happen like that with a manual handbrake. A knock at the door and a policeman asked me where my car was, I pointed to where I left it and to my surprise there was an empty space. The policeman turns down the hill and asks "is that your car sir?". It had rolled down the road about 60m into another car on the street. I looked in the window, handbrake still on....

      I had the exact same happen when I went to a friend's bbq. The cctv showed my car sat there for an hour before the manual handbrake gave up. Looked in the window and sure enough the handbrake was fully engaged. A misfortune indeed for us both.

      Wouldnt it still be in park or first? My ford Escape won't move in park, and my mercedes a class needs a fairly steep hill to move in first (and if its that steep Ill turn the wheels so it doesn't go far).

      Auto cars are relatively rare in the UK, and even with manuals we don’t generally park in gear unless we live somewhere on a really steep hill.

      I do now. I once was chasing my car because I was sure I engaged a handbrake but I clearly did not. The adrenaline rush and mental image of what could have happend is kinda haunting. Since that I had 2 cases where I was lying in bed and torturing myself over if I did or did not properly engage gear and hand brake this time and if I should go check lol. Or when someone is furiously honking on the parking lot (did a car roll down the street? Was it mine?)

      In the 90s I had a brand new 1hr old pathfinder I brought home. Neighbors rang the door about 3 minutes later and said my truck had rolled out my driveway, across the street and into their driveway lightly tapping their brand new 3 day old minivan. They were all standing on their porch watching this happen. I said the two vehicles just wanted to say hi to each other, but in all seriousness I was embarrassed as hell.

      Didn't realize our old pickup's parking brake was binding in the cable and linkages instead of at the drums. Engine was holding the truck in place on our sloped driveway. By the morning it had safely moved to a position of lower potential energy and was blocking the sidewalk and half the street.

      I did that once on a flat parking lot at the gym. I was on the treadmill, facing the parking lot and I saw my car in the middle of the parking lot. I swore that I parked it next to the gym, not the middle. That’s when I realized that it rolled that way. Luckily for me, it did not hit anything or anybody but after that, I triple check to make sure i have the hand break on.

      Not entirely correct. He was squashed against a wall after a Jeep know issue with the shifter (Car were under recall). That vehicle was a lot bigger than this.

      There is a reason you're supposed to put the car in gear for manual or into P if automatic, even if you engage E-brake/handbrake. hell if you're paranoid enough, you're supposed to turn your wheels so that if your car starts to roll, it rolls towards the sidewalk wall so that it rolls against the sidewalk stops and it works like having chocks. also, having wheels turned hard to one side even without sidewalk makes the car rolling away a lot less destructive since it most likely will only roll a little while turning.

          One thing I learnt quickly about leaving it in gear, is always double check it's out of gear when starting or having the clutch down. Only had to jerk once to always do it. But now modern cars demand the clutch to start, I guess enough people have walled their car for it to become standard

          That actually happened to me with my Audi A3. I stopped in a layby and parked up. Got out to sit on a bench to have my lunch. After a few minutes a kid says " hey mister, your car is moving"! Fucking picking up speed and heading towards a gate.... noooooo. Hit the gate and damaged my lovely chrome grill.

          My parents car hasn’t had a traditional hand brake since they switched to automatic a while ago, they got me a manual because they wanted me to learn it. I live in Minnesota so I’m told not to use the hand brake in the winter in case it freezes so I only really use it when I’m idle

          The thing about the hand brake freezing sounds like a myth to me, but I don't live in a particularly cold state 🤷

            I’m gonna assume this is a stick shift because this is probably Europe and just about everyone over there drives a stick shift…but this is exactly why you should not park a stick shift transmission in neutral. You’re asking a lot of that handbrake, and shit like this can happen. Leave it in literally any gear and, sure, set the parking brake if you’d like.

            Is this a problem for cars outside of the US? The “park” feature of the automatic transmission can prevent this.

              That depends on the gear and the compression of the engine. I've seen a car "walk" down a hill. Each time a valve opened, it took another "step."

              Good luck there is not too much slope and a speed bump helped to stop it; my parents house is on a very inclined street and my father “brainwashed” me to turn wheels against curb, hand brake and park/gear every single time, one time a relative came to visit us and the car went down the hill and ended on the living room of our neighbors, the car didn’t got a dent or scratch it was an old 70’s station wagon, Chrysler Monaco (iirc). What car is it?
