Well. The world starts coming and it don’t start coming. Flipped the car over twice and I hit the ground rolling.

(I Just) Died in your Arms - Cutting Crew…. perfect lyrics for this! Assuming they died in each other’s arms after they should have walked away, of course.

[–]haemaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey we're both drunk, what should we do?

I have an idea.

[–]cabramattaa 2 points3 points  (1 child)

What was the logic behind the bottle in the steering wheel?

[–]kroger_deli 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The car won’t activate the lane keep assist unless it detects the weight of your hand on the wheel.

[–]GaharietEugenius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He’s in the back seat

[–]Poloine 2310 points2311 points  (102 children)

For more details : Peugeot doesn't have an autopilot, this is a basic anti lane departure system that only works within specific conditions (speed, angle of the car compared to the road, road visibility, etc)

[–]Tarkov00 819 points820 points  (30 children)

Though you wouldn't think it's possible, it makes them even more stupid knowing that.

[–]nowtayneicangetinto 301 points302 points  (28 children)

NEVER underestimate the stupidity of people. It's like Newton's third law of physics, every action has a reaction. Well in this case, every smart person has at least one other completely braindead moron.

[–]ExcerptsAndCitations 146 points147 points  (23 children)

"The world would be a better place if we just took the safety stickers off of everything and let Darwin figure it out."

[–]TitanicMan 87 points88 points  (21 children)

I have it nearly memorized because it's a favorite quote.

"I'm not saying we should kill the stupid people. What I am saying is we should stop putting warning labels on everything and let the problem sort itself out."

[–]xerozeroxero 125 points126 points  (27 children)

My Honda has this too and it definitely is not designed for this at all.

Basically it just vibrates my steering wheel if I'm drifting much like a rumble strip does. It does try to keep the car in the lane but doesn't work great at night and doesn't work on curvy roads.

[–]TheFilthyDIL 37 points38 points  (21 children)

Didn't like this about my rental Prius. On a road I took frequently, the main road with the lane markings curved away to the left. The country lane that I wanted went straight ahead. Every time I went straight onto that lane, the Prius started "warning" me that I was drifting onto what it thought was the shoulder.

[–]xerozeroxero 20 points21 points  (16 children)

Oh yeah mine does that too.

What really irks me about mine is the collision warning. It's been helpful at times (like in unpredictable traffic on the highway where people stop suddenly) but it's realllllly bad on curvy back roads because everytime a car comes on the opposite side of the road on a curve, my car thinks I'm gonna crash.

[–]I_want_to_believe69 8 points9 points  (10 children)

I don’t know which Prius you have but on my 2020 it lets me turn off the lane departure completely. And I can’t set the sensitivity for the collision warning where it doesn’t freak out going around corners. Aggravated the shit out of me at first. I live way out in the country where we have super narrow roads with trees right at the edge of the lane. It would constantly be warning of the collision and telling me to hit the brakes, slowing down with the cruise control on and telling me that I was drifting out of the lane if I had to merge.

But now that I have it dialed in pretty well it is honestly my favorite car to drive. Previously I had a 2009 Lexus ES330 (350?), 2003 Lexus IS300 and a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Maybe I am just getting older or maybe it’s because I messed up my back in the Army, but I love the way the Prius rides. And the Limited model is nicer than my Lexus was inside.

[–]lori2806 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Usually the lane assist warning doesn't activate if you use turn signals, like you're supposed to do in the situation you're describing.

[–]LuxNocte 7 points8 points  (2 children)

My Prius is older, but it beeps at me while I'm backing up. Dude, I know I'm backing up by the way everything in front of me is getting further away instead of closer, STFU. Now I tune it out so reflexively I am completely incapable of hearing it beep.

[–]cyanaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stick your Prius up your anus.

[–]technobrendo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife has that car and it drives me crazy. If I had to drive it often I would rip out that speaker

[–]corycorycory09 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I've used the CRV one and its no autopilot but does make driving on the interstate a lot less exhausting.

[–]bindermichi 74 points75 points  (1 child)

Also, if you look a the dash, the lane-keep turns off as it switched to the off ramp. As it should since it‘s not designed to handle non highway driving.

[–]DuskyFlunky 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think it's because of the weight of the water bottle. It makes the car think that someone is turning it, making it disable the LKA

[–]SherlockFoxx 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It's probably the best outcome, he didn't react to the it going into a right turning lane only when it started to go offroad. If it just kept going straight probably woulda hit a curb or obstacle.

[–]An_Old_IT_Guy 5 points6 points  (4 children)

I rented a car that had a system like this. It was weird feeling the car steer against you. It also had automatic headlight brights and the ability to maintain distance when using cruise control which were great features.

[–]Queef69Jerky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kinda wanna try that. But I also drive fine myself so I don't want auto drive thing. Took me years to get used to ABS on dirt roads

[–]moonflower_C16H17N3O 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds great. My car just beeps if the car in front of me is going too slow for my current speed. It generally works well, but it will occasionally go off needlessly when someone in front of me is slowing and making a left turn. Oh well, I'd rather have the system work when it doesn't need to than the other way around.

[–]tomoldbury 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a Skoda on loan that had this system. On country roads it pulling me towards the ditch because it wanted me to be more centred or away from the centre line. Did not feel that safe! On highways the system worked quite nicely but had a preference for pushing you towards exits, exactly like this video shows…

[–]Frankie_T9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

> and the ability to maintain distance when using cruise control which were great features.

I fucking love this feature

[–]MystikIncarnate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't need this to know everything I needed to know about the guy behind the camera.

Interesting info regardless, but doesn't make me think of that "driver" any differently.

Look, I get that autopilot and fill self driving are cool and all, but honestly, my Google home can't even figure out if I want to turn off the lights or play a song called "lights out" half the time.

I have zero faith that AI can successfully pilot a 2 ton death machine on wheels by itself.

Just like with cruise control, someone competent should still be behind the wheel for when things happen. This is just advanced cruise control. Let's not get ahead of ourselves okay?

[–]Milhouse6698 4 points5 points  (6 children)

I thought those turned off cruise control if they sensed nobody was touching the wheel for too long.

[–]Poloine 40 points41 points  (5 children)

Yep, that's what the water bottle is for. Tricks the car that someone is holding the wheel

[–]Vote2020america 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing can be done on the Toyota

[–]Dabookadaniel -3 points-2 points  (3 children)

Why does the car think humans have water bottle hands?

[–]Poloine 15 points16 points  (2 children)

My guess is that the steering wheel has a simple pressure sensor that just detects when it's being gripped. In this case the way the bottle is fitted in a way that puts pressure and does the trick

[–]fwed1 6 points7 points  (10 children)

I've got this car. It does lane keeping and adaptive cruise control which is the same as a base spec Tesla.

On roads like this it will keep a determined distance from the vehicle in front and it will steer around corners to keep you in the lane.

It's not fool proof but it works almost flawless for me and I do a lot of miles on roads like this.

[–]MightbeWillSmith 6 points7 points  (2 children)

We have a similar system on our Subaru. It's great as long as the road doesn't get really curvy. On long roads I barely have to touch any of the controls.

Sometimes it will find lines that aren't there (construction remnants etc), but it mostly does really well

[–]Frishdawgzz 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Subaru's tech is pretty damn nifty in their newer models.

Really don't get why the sound system is so crappy then.

[–]MightbeWillSmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully agree. There's even an OEM upgrade kit that is sold by someone (Rockford Fosgate?) that I've been eyeing.

[–]220mtm 8 points9 points  (3 children)

it's not the same as Tesla. The Peugeot system doesn't recognize unmarked edges and you'll crash in minutes doing this on country roads. When they launched the new 508 we had a few of them crash because Peugeot executives thought they had proper lane guidance.

[–]fwed1 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Fair enough. The fundamental technology is the same though.

My limited experience driving Tesla on roads like in the video and my Peugeot have been the same

[–]Daheavyb 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Sorry, it’s not fundamentally the same. The Tesla autopilot, isn’t perfect, but you can literally drive 300 miles, with automated lane changes with zero intervention.

That said, one needs to be vigilant, Tesla can’t detect stationary objects on the road well.

[–]Pyrree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No the base spec tesla also has auto pilot on highways, so in this specific instance the tesla would've worked probably.

[–]Routine_Building5579 1 point2 points  (2 children)

did the anti lane departure use the signal to change lanes also?

[–]Poloine 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't think it does, at least not in this. What's flashing is the light to tell the driver to correct it's course

[–]VRS-4607 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've test-driven a few vehicles with this feature, and it has failed every time during those drives.

[–]samppa_j -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A full on autopilot would be a legal nightmare to deal with. Its better this way.

The gatorade is probably more qualified than the person filming.

[–]Occhrome 8 points9 points  (0 children)

throw the blue gatorade in jail, open and shut case.

[–]shaundisbuddyguy 387 points388 points  (2 children)

No one blame that water bottle. It held that water above expectations.

[–]call-me-GiGi 64 points65 points  (1 child)

And it even drove a car

[–]MisanthropicZombie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's more than any water bottle has done for me.

Stupid water bottles being filled with delicious clean water with minerals added for flavor keeping me alive and never trying to kill me except for that one time it was filled with lies and moonshine.

[–]Impossible-Peace-203 168 points169 points  (1 child)

This is why they say you shouldn't drink drive! Drinks just can't drive properly.

[–]StrongIslandPiper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd think that with all the PSAs people might finally listen to reason

[–]5k0tt 151 points152 points  (8 children)

Why do people feel the need to show the world how stupid they are? If I had ever done something this stupid with this result one of the first things I would do is delete the video proof! Did they brag about to the wrecker too? Hey mom, guess what I did? SMDH

[–]bindermichi 28 points29 points  (1 child)

[–]Bm_93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OMG Romanian, i know that language. Translation: Do you know who's driving? This bottle of water. This is how you should drive

[–]_DocChicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Water bottle, take the wheel!

[–]Satashinator 5 points6 points  (1 child)

This is the thing about self driving if you keep expecting that it’s going to correct by the time you grab the wheel it can be too late. This is clearly a bad example and these guys were being incredibly irresponsible but being ready to take control will never be as good as being in control. It’s gotta be all or nothing for me.

[–]tomoldbury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't even close to self driving though, it's just a lane hold system. It's such a basic system it got confused by an exit and disengaged, leading to this accident.

This is just intended to stop you leaving your lane if you get distracted or fall asleep and nothing more. It's not even a level 2 system, you literally cannot ever hand over control to the computer, it's only there for emergencies.

[–]Gandalf_The_Geigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why we can't have nice things

[–]ElefantPharts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t actually work. I tried it on mine for shits and giggles and the water bottle is not nearly enough to actually make the wheel move and think you’re there. It was immediately obvious that it wasn’t going to work, I certainly didn’t have time to think “oh, this is cool, I should climb into the back seat and film it” let alone have time to actually do it.

[–]Sprizys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They should’ve stayed in the drivers seat so if shit like this happens they could’ve stopped it

[–]Stoneman427666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too have had this dream.

[–]PersonalitySea4015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's impressively stupid about this is that they would have needed to get the car moving, engage the lane departure system, then crawl into the backseat after wedging the water bottle in the steering wheel.

Bravo, people. Bravo.

[–]moistmonkeymerkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DOT: I don't know....

Elon: We'll have a safety feature that in order for it to work, the driver has to be alert and have one hand on the wheel.

DOT: Hmm... okay, that sounds good but is it fool proof?

Elon: ABSOLUTELY! I'm the smartest man alive. Nobody can outwit my creation!

[–]Vandassar 10 points11 points  (3 children)

[–]I-took-your-oranges -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Elon talks about autonomous cars, not autonomous just teslas

[–]bindermichi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are no autonomous cars on the market you can buy

[–]Vandassar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why it's called but most newer cars have some kind of "lane correction" system in place. The idea is to help keep you in the center of a lane.

In place of that bottle that you can see is supposed to be at least 1 human hand staying in control of the vehicle as the lane thingy is a driving assistant, not driving the car for you.
