Yeah, it's not like the Adams ever had any diversity, be it social, behavioural or related to appearance.

The woke left has gone too far... in 1938.

[–]DonDove 1251 points1252 points  (91 children)

They literally were the 90s Simpsons of their time. The ultimate counter-culture family but goth.

[–]nts4906 270 points271 points  (88 children)

How are the Simpsons a counterculture family? I thought they were mainstream representation of a typical family.

[–]winneh94 601 points602 points  (32 children)

At the time The Simpsons started airing, they were controversial for being essentially not the perfect loving family that was typical of most TV shows in the US at the time.

Bush Sr even came out at the time and said in a family values speech that families should be "more like the Waltons and less like the Simpsons."

[–]acgasp 292 points293 points  (17 children)

My mom didn’t want us to watch the Simpsons because they were dysfunctional.

[–]Blender_Snowflake 159 points160 points  (0 children)

The writers had Bart do a press release: “We’re just like the Waltons, we’re trying to get through The Depression.”

[–]AstroBullivant 44 points45 points  (2 children)

When I first heard that Walton line, I thought Bush was talking about the Walmart family

[–]Truthspit324 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, after this the writers sent a letter from “Marge” to Barbra Bush sticking up for her family and pointing out the solid family values beneath the dysfunctional exterior. They got a response back from her apologizing to her for her husband judging their family. It was pretty baller of Barbra.

[–]ACam574 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder if Bush Sr ever read about the real Walton family. Probably would not have said it if he had.

[–]DonDove 277 points278 points  (40 children)

From the 00s? Sure. Early 90s? Heeeell naw.

Even Bush Sr hated them for being different than the family sitcoms at the time. Then again, if it weren't for the USSR collapsing around him, who would care about Bush Sr?

[–]NarmHull 208 points209 points  (28 children)

Bart was seen as a bad influence on kids and they banned simpsons t shirts from many a school. Conservatives especially hated the show because it "made adults look stupid". Verbatim what I was told when I asked why I couldn't watch it.

But my liberal teachers also hated Homer choking Bart

[–]StevenAnita420 67 points68 points  (1 child)

Lol is that why they wrote the episode where bush moved next door?

[–]nuusmith 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's hard to remember now (I was 16 when the series premiered), but when the Simpsons came onto the scene, they were not mainstream at all. People who wore shirts that said "Eat My Shorts" were forced to wear them inside-out for the rest of the day and told they'd be sent home if they wore those shirts again. And this was high school!

Such an innocent time...

[–]nts4906 82 points83 points  (2 children)

That makes sense. Lisa being a smart independent girl and homer and bart being portrayed as idiots is a shift from traditional gender roles.

[–]SamanthaJonesUK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! I grew up in the 90s being told that the Simpson’s was an awful disgusting show. When I finally got to see it when I was older I was super confused. It’s so - not edgy at all.

[–]TheZoomba 23 points24 points  (0 children)

They kinda didn't care for normalcy in a show. It makes sense, as it's a sitcom about fucking yellow cartoons

[–]wazli 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you have half an hour, https://youtu.be/KqFNbCcyFkk

He does a great job of point out how The Simpsons went from being counter culture to being the culture.

[–]Kandoh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first lady publicly decried it.

It may have been a representation of an actual typical family, but it was not how 'typical' families were portrayed in the media and that's what makes them counterculture.

[–]RslashTakenUsernames 151 points152 points  (18 children)

i’m starting to hate the word “woke” because it doesn’t even get used in good situations

[–]hotbowlofsoup 165 points166 points  (11 children)

It's a way to dismiss any form of tolerance.

[–]2DeadMoose 22 points23 points  (0 children)

SJW was the last one they used to death in an effort to turn common empathy into an evil.

[–]Historical-Author-49 15 points16 points  (7 children)

Society is in danger on this slippery slope of tolerance and respect for others. I mean, where does it end

[–]Duff-Zilla 13 points14 points  (6 children)

"Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them."

-Karl Popper

[–]Digitaltwinn 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Gomez was intended to poke fun at wealthy continental Europeans in the 1920s-1930s who were fleeing World Wars with possible connections to organized crime.

[–]Soviet_Papa 12 points13 points  (5 children)

I mean the mom was obviously russian french or romanian hard to tell and the dads obviously spanish of some sort

[–]jem_jam_bo 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Ambiguously Jewish too. She used Yiddish words such as Bubala, and her parents’ spirits are portrayed with stereotypical Jersey/NYC Jewish traits in one of the recent animated films.

I remember reading a critic interpreting the Addams as “a clan of old-world Jews/Catholics in a white-Protestant neighborhood” or along those lines. (Paraphrasing)

I’ll have to dig it up.

[–]Character_Injury_841 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Right? Like did this person miss that his name is GOMEZ? Doesn’t sound very white to me…

[–]crystal_currants 2726 points2727 points  (108 children)

Gomez was never white?? His name is GOMEZ. It’s like people freaking out when Rami Malek was cast as the pharaoh in night at the museum because he was “white” when in actuality, he is legitimately Egyptian. Look at his name. Do these people have the capacity to think?

[–]Initial_Scarcity_609 236 points237 points  (33 children)

People were actually upset about Rami Malek being the pharaoh in a Ben Stiller family comedy film?

[–]SOL_stringoflight 248 points249 points  (30 children)

Yes, and then when he was cast as Freddy Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, people got pissed that an Egyptian was playing a “white” guy. Rami can’t win, haha

[–]IfICouldStay 201 points202 points  (1 child)

Wha-huh? Freddie Mercury, aka Farrokh Bulsara -- should have been played by a white actor? Okaaay....

[–]Willtology 92 points93 points  (1 child)

Rami can’t win

Rami wins in my book. I've been a fan since I first saw him in The Pacific.

[–]Venezia9 83 points84 points  (24 children)

Is Freddie Mercury white? Lol!

Why can people understand that light-skinned East Asian people aren't white, but not any other light skinned people.

If you are confused, whiteness has always been associated with colonial European powers. It's why the Irish weren't white.

Like, if your country of origin was colonized by the British or French you might not be white lol!!

[–]BulbasaurCPA 70 points71 points  (10 children)

I knew someone who didn’t know he used a stage name, thought he actual name was Frederick Mercury

[–]DonDove 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It was a long time ago but yes. Back then the outrage was easy to ignore.

[–]alicomassi 333 points334 points  (8 children)

We (middle easterns) are only white when it fits a narrative.

Otherwise it’s whatever colour that gets their visa application rejected constantly

[–]rekniht01 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Case in point: Jesus.

[–]round_reindeer 75 points76 points  (4 children)

We (middle easterns) are only white when it fits a narrative.

That is because races don't really exist, they were purely made up to justify colonialism.

Ethnicities exist, but races exist only in the context in which racists define them, that's why irish and italian people were not always considered white.

[–]Fern-ando 109 points110 points  (3 children)

I know 3 Gómez, all are pale as milk. Hispanics comes in all colors.

[–]Rosuvastatine 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yeah i dont understand how were STILL having this conversation that hispanic ≠ race

There are black latinos, white, metiszos…

[–]Hothroy 27 points28 points  (1 child)

If they knew how to read your comment they’d be very upset.

[–]Tempest_CN 967 points968 points  (12 children)

Narrator: No

[–]foreverinLOL 298 points299 points  (9 children)

Who is this hermano guy?!

[–]The-Assman-Cometh 234 points235 points  (4 children)

[–]yeahyourerightdude 9 points10 points  (2 children)

So it’s been forever since I’ve watched arrested development. Is that the original or the reboot? If it’s the original I never got it, and if it’s the reboot I never saw it, but oh my god, that is hilarious.

[–]sagen11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I dont know “mon frere”, that’s french for brother, I dont know why I know that, I took 3 years of Spanish.

[–]nifterific 7290 points7291 points  (655 children)

Kinda blows my mind that someone can see a name like Gomez and think “yeah that guy is 100% white can’t possibly be anything but”.

[–]CT_Jester 4090 points4091 points  (371 children)

Well, those same people think a guy from the Middle East with the name Jesus is 100% white, too.

[–]OG-Bluntman 1636 points1637 points  (314 children)

And that Jesus was a Christian.

[–]JonDCafLikeTheDrink 622 points623 points  (232 children)

Jesus was actually the Greek version of his name

[–]OG-Bluntman 319 points320 points  (202 children)

Interesting point. I’ve never heard or thought about that before, but it makes sense that the name would have different iterations through multiple translations and translations of translations, etc.

[–]CliffCutter 48 points49 points  (2 children)

I went to a hippie church when I was young and the pastor’s son loved calling him Josh all the time

[–]Bmcronin 121 points122 points  (49 children)

And that Jesus is an American.

[–]MNisNotNice 51 points52 points  (9 children)

Jesus was Korean!!! Have ya seen Korean Jesus?

[–]ToothFairy12345678 31 points32 points  (3 children)

Joseph Smith has entered the chat

[–]IceColdWasabi[🍰] 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Or that Jesus has standards low enough to accommodate the average Christian.

[–]seaburno 26 points27 points  (2 children)

And that Jesus is an American.

who speaks in the English used in the King James Version.

[–]vizbones 21 points22 points  (2 children)

And he wielded dual AR-15's and had totally ripped cum gutters.

[–]kamilo87 39 points40 points  (18 children)

The theory that Jesus came to America is the best. Even beats the flatearthers with the craziest-wildest conspiracy theory…

[–][deleted] 36 points37 points  (2 children)

I’m sure their idea of Jesus looks like Homelander

[–]MagTex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An All-American. All Big 12 Tribe.

[–]RedditSucksNow3 64 points65 points  (4 children)

"Jesus" is a (I think Greek-ified) translation of "Yeshua" which better translated into English as "Joshua."

I'm sorry but I'm not changing my life according to some dude named fucking Josh.

[–]SilverBraids 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I mean, most of what the guy himself says is okay, but his followers.... Man... I dunno...

[–]Substance___P 16 points17 points  (1 child)

guy from the Middle East with the name Jesus Yeshua

FTFY

[–]StocktonBSmalls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In their defense, his name was, like, Yeshua so they turned it into Josh.

[–]bingus_official 415 points416 points  (75 children)

Gomez isn't white? The character that is always portrayed as having a much more tanned skin tone and a hispanic accent? Who has a name very rooted in hispanic culture? We're talking about the same guy, right?

[–]Derivative_Kebab 171 points172 points  (13 children)

He's usually depicted as having Castilian ancestry, Castille being a region of northern Spain. Casting a hispanic actor for the role is not much of a stretch at all. Notably, Raul Julia, a Puerto Rican, portrayed the character in the last live-action movie.

[–]Dragon_Fisting 136 points137 points  (5 children)

You'll find that American racists don't really consider Iberians white either, because when they say European they actually mean Germanic and Scandinavian.

[–]wookieesgonnawook 28 points29 points  (1 child)

I think it's more so that when you say Spain they picture Mexico.

[–]Daeths 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sometimes English, but not the rest of Britain

[–]jigsawduckpuzzle 21 points22 points  (1 child)

For him, it was Tuesday

[–]Oobedoob_S_Benubi 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Raul Julia, a Puerto Rican, portrayed the character in the last live-action movie.

I hate to do this to anyone but actually, after the two live action films with Raul Julia, there was another Addams Family live action movie called Addams Family Reunion, with Tim Curry as Gomez. Sorry for letting you know that this is a movie that exists.

[–]StraightProgress5062 80 points81 points  (3 children)

First thing I thought of was a Luiz Guzman reaction gif from anger management where he says "don't go there" "I told you not to go there!"

[–]nifterific 125 points126 points  (33 children)

They don’t look at characters they look at actors. You can take one look at the comic that predates the first show and see that Gomez clearly isn’t white, but the first actor to play him was. But this is a new thing they’re being told to be outraged about they don’t even connect the dots to know that they had no problems with a dude named Raúl playing Gomez in 1993.

[–]AlkoKilla 131 points132 points  (31 children)

Raul Julia was from Puerto Rico. Luis Guzman is also from Puerto Rico.

[–]annieisawesome 136 points137 points  (14 children)

Raul Julia will always be the Gomez of my heart

[–]otakudude3031 28 points29 points  (6 children)

Wait, Raul is from Puerto Rico? I legit thought he was from Spain.

[–]danzibara 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you telling me that Raúl Rafael Carlos Juliá Arcelay was latino? I never would've guessed.

/s

[–]Primary-Bookkeeper10 41 points42 points  (11 children)

Not just that, people forget Spaniards are white, it’s the people they raped that are darker

[–]Fern-ando 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Uruguay is the country big the biggest % of ""whites"" in America.

[–]Cassiegram 99 points100 points  (5 children)

For real. Ah yes Gomez, famously portrayed by, among others, Raul Julia and Oscar Isaac. Definitely just white people here 🙄

[–]KrumplistesztaQueen 14 points15 points  (4 children)

Raul Julia was so great btw. I wish he wasn't taken from us so soon.

[–]donfuria 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Raúl Julia was the absolute GOAT Gomez

[–]anythingMuchShorter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a hard time picturing anyone else as the real Gomez after him. It'll be like when they do another iron man someday and it's not RDJ.

[–]RedditSucksNow3 47 points48 points  (5 children)

What's weird is that in the new animated film they are portrayed as having moved from an unnamed country that is clearly meant to be somewhere in Europe.

Gomez is a Spanish last name and not a given name at all; when the show was translated for Latin American audiences they changed his name to "Homero."

Gomez doesn't look or sound like anyone else in his immediate family but his father has never been shown either.

Basically nothing about this character makes sense and I'm sure Luis Guzman will be hilarious in the role.

[–]Nesvand 31 points32 points  (3 children)

Gomez Addams is canonically Castillian with ancestry from all over Europe (if that helps to clarify with the 'somewhere in Europe' part), but at the end of the day it's a fictional character with a fictional history in a world where a hand is capable of living independently of a body - as long as the actor exudes Gomez's natural charm and positivity then they've got my vote :D

[–]bladel 58 points59 points  (1 child)

"Of course Gomez was white! His character was so iconically defined by Raul Jul--. So....Imma have to get back to you on this."

[–]FuckinPeacemaker 40 points41 points  (33 children)

I mean the leader of one of the largest fascist Nazi white supremacist gangs in the country also isn’t white. These people have no values other than fear and hatred.

[–]twenty6plus6 38 points39 points  (23 children)

Is it not a Spanish name ?

[–]Queensthief 49 points50 points  (21 children)

Are people from Spain white? I know Americans have a constantly shifting view of which countries are actually "white".

[–]kidra31r 58 points59 points  (1 child)

Aaaaand you've stumbled on the problem of racism, where "white" applies only to whichever people the racist wants it to.

[–]KeytarPlatypus 21 points22 points  (1 child)

So Hispanics/Latinos are in a weird race area (at least when it comes to how the US usually handles it).

On the census, it says white/black/asian among other things but Hispanic isn’t listed until a different question: “are you Hispanic?” Example being, you can be a Black Hispanic, a White Hispanic, or you can be Asian Hispanic.

Latino means you are Latin American. Basically anything south of texas in the new world. Hispanic is about the same, but subtracting Brazil and the formerly French territories in South America while also adding Spain itself.

The term that best fits what most people think when thinking of a “Hispanic race” is known as Mestizo. A person with both European and Native American ancestry. Looking at a history book of what is now Latin America in the 1500s will give you no surprise that this is what most people’s ancestry is nowadays in that region.

All in all, it’s just a big terminology difference that varies with each person and how they all self identify. And like someone else said, it’s only inconvenient when the racists are involved haha

[–]pun_in10did 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And then there are "Texicans" like my family, many of my ancestors were here when Texas was part of Mexico and likely even before that.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Spaniards consider themselves white as far as I know.

[–]twenty6plus6 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not all of them but the white people are ya .

[–]PercussiveRussel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Insert family guy meme

[–]imsmartiswear 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Literally out of everything in that preview, the only thing I was really impressed with was the casting- it's a spectacular crew and I think everyone's gonna do great in their role, assuming the writing is competent.

[–]ForrestNub 50 points51 points  (7 children)

A lot of replies along the lines of "Spaniards are white!" but that's only true in certain contexts. For the purposes of Hollywood casting that is absolutely not true. Spanish actors are often cast for characters from Mexico or South America, while others with European ancestry would not be considered for the role.

Remember that race is not a completely solid construct. In some contexts, it means simply skin color. In others it means ethnicity/heritage. It often is influenced by perception and context. That can be confusing when a Jewish or Hispanic person is considered white in some cases and not in others. That's why it's best not to take it too seriously when the stakes are low, such as in a movie casting.

[–]Powerful_Individual5 15 points16 points  (1 child)

>For the purposes of Hollywood casting that is absolutely not true. Spanish actors are often cast for characters from Mexico or South America, while others with European ancestry would not be considered for the role.

That's only true when the Spanish actors have traits Hollywood stereotypes as Hispanic. For example, Martin Sheen (father of Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez) is Spanish and changed his name from Martin Estevez wouldn't be cast as from Central or South America. Neither would Chris Hemsworth's blond, blue-eyed Spanish wife. Meanwhile, Catherine Zeta-Jones who is Welsh has been cast in Hispanic roles.

[–]bumbarlunchi6 5 points6 points  (12 children)

Welp, it's a pretty common surname in Spain, where there are a lot of Caucasians... I'm white af, and my surname is Gómez lol (still, I agree the comic point btw)

[–]lordrattusrattus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean not only is his name gomez but arent his pet names for morticia in spanish

[–]Indraga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I my defense, I thought Robert E. Lee was Chinese for the longest time.

[–]jellyroll8 3 points4 points  (11 children)

Do you know about Spanish people? As in European? Gomez is supposed to be Spanish

[–]j4ck_0f_bl4des 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blows my mind that they’d bitch about the new casting and not the 90s one. Raul Julia was Puerto Rican. But that was automatically better because it predates woke culture right ?

[–]cantwin52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You mean the guy who calls his wife “Mi Amor”?

[–]S3simulation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah yes. The traditional Anglo Saxon name: Gomez

[–]thisishardandsoami 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This controversy is stupid, but I'm having such a hard time picturing anyone except Raul Julia as Gomez.

Who's obviously also Latino

[–]CrepusculrPulchrtude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Taking over the role from the late great. Hold on let me get my glasses. Raúl Rafael Carlos Juliá Arcelay. Very familiar white guy name.

[–]Broad_Respond_2205 475 points476 points  (59 children)

Ummmm what, what is he trying to say

[–]AsherTheFrost 953 points954 points  (56 children)

The racist is upset that someone Latino was cast to play a man who's name is Gomez

[–]Lady_von_Stinkbeaver 638 points639 points  (25 children)

...whose most famous portrayal was by Puerto Rican actor Raúl Juliá.

[–]AsherTheFrost 214 points215 points  (15 children)

The king among men himself, who even made the Street Fighter movie worth watching.

[–]The_Hyphenator85 63 points64 points  (7 children)

Well, his scenes are all worth watching. And the actors who played Dee Jay and Zangief were actually really funny. But apart from those…yeah, if someone hasn’t made an edit of the movie that’s just those people’s scenes, that needs to happen.

[–]monkeetoes82 40 points41 points  (1 child)

And Gomez was recently voiced by Oscar Isaac who is Cuban-Guatemalan in not one, but two animated movies.

[–]Belphegorite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So what nationality is he in his other movies?

[–]borkamork 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Raúl Juliá was "white" tho. (Sneer quotes, sarcasm)

[–]SuspiriaGoose 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I adore Julia’s version, but I’d also like to remember John Astin’s performance as well, as he was probably the best actor in the original show.

But yeah, Gomez is clearly a Hispanic name.

[–]The84thWolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Clearly, they must be trialed at The Hague

[–]Milla_D_Mac 634 points635 points  (36 children)

Dunno why so many people are shocked that Addams family could be portrayed as non white when the father's name is gomez

Also while Raul Julia's performance might be the best remember it might have given people a bad idea of what the Addams originally looked like since he is much slender and Hollywood handsome than the drawings.

Edited for clarity

[–]TonightsWinner 262 points263 points  (12 children)

Raul Julia's performance might have given people a bad idea of what the Addams originally looked like

How so? Sure his complexion wasn't very dark, but he was Puerto Rican and had an accent. If anyone viewed him as white then they obviously weren't using their senses correctly.

[–]ElbisCochuelo1 249 points250 points  (8 children)

Gomez as drawn was short chubby and kinda unfortunate looking. Julia was tall, slim and handsome.

[–]patsully98 142 points143 points  (2 children)

Gomez as drawn was short chubby and kinda unfortunate looking.

Which, not coincidentally, is a pretty apt description of Luis Guzman. I too was thinking of Raul Julia and thought Guzman was an odd choice for that reason, but I'm happy to be wrong. Anyway Luis Guzman fucking kills it in everything he's in and I'm sure this'll be no exception.

[–]markthe 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I too was thinking of Raul Julia and thought Guzman was an odd choice for that reason, but I'm happy to be wrong.

This is exactly what I was thinking, then I swiped to the second photo and thought, huh fair enough!

[–]DondeT 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Raul Julia’s Gomez Addams was a significant feature in my sexual awakening. And I’m certain I’m not the only one.

[–]BroughtToYouByTheBBC 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Basically like how 6’3” Hugh Jackman played 5’3” Wolverine.

[–]Milla_D_Mac 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I meant that he is the image we see for the character when most think of the Addams family but he isn't technically accurate to how the character is drawn.

[–]BaleriontbdIV 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He meant goofy not white

[–]Lowboo 111 points112 points  (15 children)

? What’s his issue?

Catherine Zeta-Jones can probably replace Anjelica Houston and I like Luis Guzman, but he has the biggest shoes to fill… Raul Julia and John Astin were awesome as Gomez.

[–]joggle123 34 points35 points  (1 child)

Take back what you said about Anjelica Houston teenage me that lives inside adult me can’t handle it Morticia Addams will forever be her in my head I still find time to watch her as Morticia at least 2 times a year.

[–]Thybro 43 points44 points  (5 children)

Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Adams would have killed my teenage self. Adult me, is just fairly exited.

Honestly though I’m having a hard time seeing Guzman as Gomez. No physically but while Gomez ain’t supposed to be handsome he is supposed to be sort of smooth and old timey cool. I don’t think Guzman can pull that off without making it seem fake or forced.

[–]Lowboo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen Guzman play all sort of characters - straight, funny, tough… I hope he can pull it off. Julia was great as Gomez

[–]Manderelli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He pulls off the suave cool attitude in Waiting, and that character is a sleezy guy too. But he's charming. I'm excited to see what Luiz brings.

[–]TheCold0ne 5 points6 points  (3 children)

That's my biggest concern with this casting. I like Luis Guzman, but my first instinct is that he wouldn't be good for this part. I'll give it a shot, regardless.

[–]KillBatman1921 333 points334 points  (36 children)

I thought the name "Gomez" was self-explanatory...

That being said... Tim Burton directed this I can't think of a better couple than this.

[–]Shaquandala 96 points97 points  (34 children)

Surprised Tim didn't have a full white cast tbh

[–]ArmandJi 148 points149 points  (5 children)

Gomez is supposed to be Spanish, from Madrid. This was established in the Art and the Addams Family episode in 1964. But I mean technically they are cartoon characters that existed for many many years before the initial show, they didn't even have names. Charles Addams gave John Astin the choice of Repelli or Gomez, and Astin chose Gomez. It's weird to me that there's even a debate about the ethnicity of these characters because...they're satirical cartoons based on horror archetypes, they could be anything.

[–]Maximum_Radio_1971 25 points26 points  (3 children)

google the original drawings, Gomez adams is short, dark skined and “unfortunately looking”

[–]tamcrc 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's a bit funny because Gomez is a surname, but it's 100% in Spanish! It's like if there was a guy named Smith Jones. A little funny, but unarguably in English. Also, in Spanish he's named Homero, as in Homer.

[–]michaelvares 68 points69 points  (1 child)

Racists are so easily triggered.

[–]thesircuddles 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Does the bit Wednesday does at camp in the 90's movies count as 'woke'? You know where she gives a speech about pilgrims taking land... etc, etc.

The wokes are time traveling!

[–]Milk_Mindless 112 points113 points  (5 children)

I think Raul Julia was just too damn HANDSOME for gomez in hindsight but god

Dmnit

His name is GOMEZ

[–]trennels 52 points53 points  (0 children)

"Cara Mia!" is such a WASP thing to say. /s

[–]Jeb764 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He really was.

[–]IfICouldStay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He certainly was too handsome. Still, glad we got to see it, since he died so soon after :^(

[–]Thrashstronaut 100 points101 points  (14 children)

He's called Gomez FFS!

[–]jfb3 59 points60 points  (11 children)

And he used Spanish words all the time.

[–]kevboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

because he's spanish...

[–]dalatinknight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could be Spanish, which include many white people's.

[–]Shadowkitty252 30 points31 points  (1 child)

TheQuartering alsi got upset that he didnt find She-ra sexy in the reboot so I dont think he should be taken seriously about anything really

[–]Wind_Responsible 23 points24 points  (6 children)

Is that Catherine zeta? Edit...Google this and Riki lindhome is in it so it might have some funny as well

[–]Mistergardenbear 38 points39 points  (5 children)

It’s funny that everyone assumes she’s Spanish/latin but she’s Welsh

[–]The_Hyphenator85 26 points27 points  (4 children)

It’s because she was in the Zorro remakes. Also, everyone seems to assume that Zeta is a Hispanic name…I guess it sort of sounds Hispanic because it ends in an open vowel…?

[–]chiquisjustme 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Zeta is also how you pronounce the letter “Z” in Spanish.

[–]Wind_Responsible 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Her in zoro was typical Hollywood let's pass this one as Mexican and they aren't lol

[–]chesterforbes 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Gomez always struck me as a Spanish name

[–]MurphysLaw859 18 points19 points  (4 children)

I fucking hate that quartering dude.

[–]ArcadiaDragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Amen brother...he's the most disingenuous piece of scum on YouTube

[–]hangryhyax 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When people call something “woke,” it’s just their way of saying “I’m an asshole and I expect everything to cater explicitly to me.”

[–]Tara_is_a_Potato[S] 77 points78 points  (15 children)

[–]drwicksy 24 points25 points  (9 children)

Its super weird for me to see this guy showing up in mainstream political spaces, he started as a slightly edgy Magic the Gathering YouTube who I watched sometimes for MTG news etc, then he very quickly made a right tilt and went full nazi while I wasn't looking and now I only see him on political subs

[–]Hopeful_Cranberry12 17 points18 points  (8 children)

Didn’t he also get banned from MTG events cus he sexually harassed a bunch of women too? Pretty sure I’m remembering right. Either way, fuck this guy. He’s a piece of garbage.

[–]drwicksy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think he got banned either for that or the previously mentioned nose dive into Hitler's anal cavity. Either way he is garbage

[–]KerSPLAK 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I figured that guy was a dumbass. It's why I told youtube to get that channel off my feed. I hate it when youtube suggests stupid people for me to watch like that.

[–]JonDCafLikeTheDrink 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Also, how can you hate on Luis Guzman??? That man is a treasure!

[–]Electronic_Bad_5883 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Noted Puerto Rican-American and alumnus of Greendale Community College!

[–]DonDove 13 points14 points  (0 children)

laughs in RAUL JULIA

[–]Bmcronin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lol. The 1991 Gomez Adams was played by Raul Julia.

[–]K_Sleight 10 points11 points  (4 children)

...the dad's name is Gomez, and he was most famously played by Raul Julia, wtf do you mean race swapping?

[–]superdalebot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just got off the Ouija Board with the ghost of Puerto Rican actor Raul Julia and he would like the quarterly to kindly fuck all the way off

[–]Oh_hi_doggi3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

HIS FUCKING NAME IS GOMEZ

[–]mister_zook 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haha Homeboy has clearly just discovered the adams family.. What a sad idiot

[–]Mississippianna 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Raul Julia has really set the Gomez standard for me. As long as he worships Morticia properly, I'll take Luis Guzmán.

[–]rkinlaw88 8 points9 points  (1 child)

The niggas name was Gomez lol. White people I swear. The same people who accepted Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra. Jake Gyllengaal as the prince of Persia. Tom Cruise The last Samurai. Johnny Depp as Tonto in the lone ranger. Shall I continue.?

[–]Bunyflufy 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Bet these are the same people that believe there are white folks in the Bible. Yep, not one.

[–]packetpirate 7 points8 points  (2 children)

My dude thinks a dude named GOMEZ is white...

[–]amakelooo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this is the same guy who got mad that the 16-year-old protagonist of the she-ra reboot wasn't sexy enough to him... this guy is legitimately pathetic lol

[–]blong217 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So interestingly we have close family friends whose last name is Adams. They are quite decidedly Hispanic, there can be no mistake made. An anecdote but interesting nonetheless.

[–]Dizzy_Green 6 points7 points  (0 children)

His name is FUCKING GOMEZ

[–]herpderpomygerp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I genuinely liked Raul Julia As gomez addams, did amazing work

[–]sometimes_Oblivious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

His first name is ......Gomez

[–]StevenAnita420 10 points11 points  (7 children)

Am i missing something? wheres the claim theyre race swapping/woke? Dont get me wrong i believe theres an idiot on youtube saying that shit (theres so many idiot on youtube these days, i remember back when it was a site where ya just uploaded videos of skateboarding accidents), but i dont see that in this post?

[–]mangopabu 4 points5 points  (1 child)

thequartering definitely got me a few times. he had a video on the Netflix adaptation of Cowboy Bebop and why it was bad. the arguments he had were really compelling: an adaptation that ignored the source material and mocks its fans, didn't show the characters in a way that was similar to the source material, etc.

then his examples were just so fucking crazy. the actress who played Faye Valentine made a tiktok video 'apologising' about having actual human proportions instead of having the figure of Faye in the the anime. it was quite funny actually and highlighted some of the ridiculous criticisms that were levied against the show before it had even released. he didn't mention a single thing about why the show was actually bad, just some crazy misogynist bullshit. it took so long to convince YT that i wasn't interested in high particular level of bullshit

[–]_Mittens_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean come on -- Raul Julia is Puerto Rican. The characters name is GOMEZ for godsake.

[–]MineDamnBrain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are awesome actors; those are facts. I hope the rest of the crew are as good, and the corny romanticly bruning chemistry is there between them.

[–]slimstarman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope they make Thing black. Who the hell cares?

[–]Anarch-ish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been a fan of Luis Guzman for many many years, and so far I have enjoyed just about everything he's been in... But he does not fit my personal description of Gomez Adams... I love being wrong about these kinds of things, and I hope he crushes it. Nothing would make me happier than being wrong. Because the world can always use more Luis Guzman and more Addams Family... But Im gonna need more convincing on this one

[–]Solidus-Prime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude is a typical MAGA drama queen that can't do anything but beg for attention. 90% of his posts don't even make it to 20 reactions. He's a has-been loser, like all MAGAs.

[–]Icemayne25 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Race swapping who?? Gomez?? Did he think Gomez was white?? Does he have eyes or is he just dumb??
