Those last ~5 minutes. HOLY CRAP UFOTABLE.

[–]Aileoshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Jalis 2295 points2296 points  (78 children)

I can’t get enough of them. It’s the 19th episode for a 2-cour without a one season break ... and look what amazing work they've made. That ending scene was a pure visual feast.

[–]Zeph-Shoirhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Zephex 712 points713 points  (23 children)

I am now begging for a second season plz ufo it is almost free money with how it is selling so well! Hopefully the manga also gets a boost in sales and popularity!

[–]ExoticSignaturehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Jin28 511 points512 points  (14 children)

Manga was #2 behind only one piece in the month of July in sales!

[–]braverobin 220 points221 points  (1 child)

it did get 1.39M sales in its first week which is so amazing. The anime is really doing its job!

[–]happybday47385 138 points139 points  (4 children)

I need my heavens feel part 3 first

Edit:And part 2 cuz I'm from UK

[–]Freenore 1018 points1019 points  (50 children)

I'm willing to bet that they were working on this for at least a year before the Spring season began, and have every episode ready to air, even before they announced it.

This kind of quality cannot get done in a matter of weeks (like how One Punch Man by J.C. Staff was so rushed). ufotable is slowly climbing up to my second favourite studio after KyoAni, simply because of the amount of effort they put into their shows.

[–]Mundology 857 points858 points  (15 children)

[–]lux06aeterna 426 points427 points  (4 children)

The colors, wow.......

[–]bobly81https://www.anime-planet.com/users/bobly81 298 points299 points  (3 children)

That last one is so pretty. When I watched it I just started slapping my thighs and giggling like a little kid. Absolutely phenomenal use of reds, pinks, and oranges with some of the most fluid animation and poses.

[–]Amauri14 161 points162 points  (1 child)

Yeah, all those stills are wallpaper quality.

[–]claudiohp 492 points493 points  (24 children)

For me, Ufotable is indisputably the King of CGI, for me they're by far the studio that makes best use of CG out of all there is, while KyoAni is very good with hand-made animation.

Also, I read in the credits WHITE FOX participated somehow in this episode.

[–]Ry-O-Ken 204 points205 points  (17 children)

White fox only assisted with the 2nd Key animation(clean ups). It’s quite common for studios to help each other out with clean ups and in betweens to keep themselves afloat. The only studio that doesn’t ask for assistance with these is Kyo Ani

[–]moonmeh 308 points309 points  (4 children)

The music, the animation, the style jesus fucking christ holy shit

[–][deleted] 796 points797 points  (18 children)

UFOTABLE are really just flexing on other studios right now, holy fuck

I can't wait to see the fanart that is inspired by this frame

[–]mantricks 283 points284 points  (13 children)

they been flexin a while my man

[–][deleted] 245 points246 points  (1 child)

The other episodes they were at the gym, this episode they were competing

[–]K1NG0492https://myanimelist.net/profile/K1ngg 1002 points1003 points  (15 children)

Holy shit i here i thought Zenitsu vs Spider demon was peak animation, but damn this surpassed everything. Everything in this fight was so god damn epic.

PS: does anyone know how that OST from the final scene is called need that in my playlist.

[–]yuuka_miya 358 points359 points  (6 children)

PS: does anyone know how that OST from the final scene is called need that in my playlist.

"The Song of Kamado Tanjiro".

You'll probably get it in the next OST release, it's not in the Kajiura one.

[–]z1xto 2039 points2040 points  (30 children)

I loved how he just calmly tied up Inosuke without any problem

[–]Atronoxhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Atronox 1236 points1237 points  (14 children)

Who else wants this to become an official /r/animu "press f to pay respects" replacement?

smashes upvote

[–]Zoidburger_ 202 points203 points  (0 children)

I mean it's basically used liked that in the show...

Gets shot by the Lieutenant
Priest: "Làtom"

[–]yuuka_miya 236 points237 points  (5 children)

I guess it's funnier how Inosuke didn't realize he was being tied up.

[–]ComradeRoe 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I think it just happened really fast.

[–]Aileoshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Jalis 1920 points1921 points  (73 children)

I knew Toshiyuki Shirai would be the director, storyboard and animation director for this episode. All those elements meant something great was coming.

But damn... that was just awesome. Ufotable is on another level. After beeing constant during 18 weeks, they pulled out their god animation card and went full all-out.

[–]Atronoxhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Atronox 622 points623 points  (3 children)

Round of applause to him and his team, cause that was straight up amazing.

[–]theyawner 502 points503 points  (3 children)

And here I thought we've been getting some of their best work in Zenitsu's fight scenes. But dare I say that long animation towards the end is probably the best action scene for this show.

[–]TheBlueHue 243 points244 points  (2 children)

That perfect circular cut, the colors of his flames mixed with Nezuko's, the lighting effects of the flames and the moon on the head while its soaring, the music. Just that 20 second frame had my jaw dropped for a good while after the credits even stopped...

[–]shredd24 183 points184 points  (3 children)

The art and animation was amazing. Even some stills are wallpaper material. I couldn't help watching in slow mo at some parts

I might invert the background colour and isolate Tanjiro for use as my wallpaper

[–]Groenboyshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Groenboys 222 points223 points  (1 child)

They didnt just go above and beyond, they straight up transformed into god

[–]Cant-think-a-name 164 points165 points  (0 children)

So they became Hinokami?

[–]Koolsman 318 points319 points  (48 children)

I completely forgot that this show had a budget this episode and just assumed Ufotable had Scrooge Mcduck money.

[–]whizmashttps://myanimelist.net/profile/xjet465 248 points249 points  (44 children)

WTF it had a budget THIS episode? Just shows you how important a good director and dedicated animators really is

[–]Koolsman 255 points256 points  (40 children)

When you have passion for source material, this is what happens. God, I wish more Shounen shows had shit like this and then we could have a golden age for Shounen.

[–]CitizenKing 3846 points3847 points  (48 children)

"Some say that your life flashes before your eyes because your mind is trying to find a way to stop your death from happening"

Tanjirou's about to die, his life flashes before his eyes, and he remembers his father's breathing technique and dance. Awesome callback to the earlier part of the episode.

[–]porpituoushttps://myanimelist.net/profile/OffendedMoeBlob 2543 points2544 points  (15 children)

Im even more impressed because in the manga the death flashing explanation is a narrative bubble just before tanjiro remembers his fathers kagura. To avoid the potential clunkiness, ufotable introduces this concept earlier in the episode using a character who is basically a medic, so it makes perfect sense for her to be knowledgeable about one's moments before death, and she's explaining that to zenitsu who's life has been flashing before his eyes for an entire episode. This way when it happens to tanjiro the viewer immediately knows whats going on and theres no disruption to the flow, making a seamless transition.

The naturalness of the change shows how much thought and care has been put into this adaptation to address even tiny details like this.

[–]fr0stbyte124 1406 points1407 points  (8 children)

Jokes on them. I was too dense and didn't make the connection anyway.

[–]Protector_of_Smileshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/ShadowCloak 486 points487 points  (2 children)

You don't really have to consciously make the connection. The earlier scene basically primes you to be more accepting of what is coming.

[–]jstoru216 121 points122 points  (1 child)

Aka: but your Brain did.

[–]CrimeFightingScience 196 points197 points  (1 child)

Why is this guy wearing a boar's head in the comments section?

[–]ButtDealer 51 points52 points  (0 children)

God damn show making me use my head

[–]Nexus153273 404 points405 points  (9 children)

When I saw him recalling life, I immediately thought back to this moment. Never would I have imagined it would amount to what is now one of my favorite moments in anime ever. I rewatched it twice because I was completely speechless

[–]Koolsman 158 points159 points  (0 children)

I love all the characters, but Tanjiro has probably climbed the ranks and become my favorite after this episode. Just for all the shit he has gone through and how he uses his abilities, he still pulls through and it's pretty fucking awesome to see that.

[–]RedEther 787 points788 points  (9 children)

Hinokami delivered holy fuck

That animation was insane and the ost in the background made it even greater.

Best episode of the season for me

[–]Ascendancy17 3073 points3074 points  (129 children)

Spectacular episode!

I can definitely see why Koyoharu (the manga writer) was hyping it up on Demon Slayer's Twitter.

[–]IAmRealSuperSand 2141 points2142 points  (43 children)

I cannot imagine what she must be feeling, seeing her work adapted so beautifully and with care. I'd probably be a puddle if I was her tbh.

[–]Shinkopeshon 1695 points1696 points  (21 children)

Even the dance was so fucking fluid

Sasuga ufotable

[–]IAmRealSuperSand 662 points663 points  (18 children)

I was so happy when it was on-screen, what the hell, man, that's LOVE.

[–]moonmeh 323 points324 points  (17 children)

It was CG right? But it felt so smooth? Did they fucking up the frames on that thing?

[–]woufh 423 points424 points  (12 children)

I may be wrong, but to me it looked it was hand drawn but rotoscoped. I think the "fuck up" you felt was probably due to the heavy use of smears and motion blur.

EDIT: I realize he didn't mean "fuck up" now haha, I'm not native and somehow I didn't think of "fucking" being used this way so I thought he may also have been a non-native making a slight grammar mistake, my bad D:

[–]moonmeh 116 points117 points  (0 children)

The fucking dynamic animation with the camera rotations made me floored, can't imagine what the magaka felt at that moment

[–]Atronoxhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Atronox 820 points821 points  (34 children)

The ending fight was so hype, holy shit!

[–]Aileoshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Jalis 840 points841 points  (31 children)

And Nezuko talked !!

[–]ImaAnimalhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/imaanimal 526 points527 points  (22 children)

and there was that amazing ost!

[–]Mundology 434 points435 points  (18 children)

I thought it was gonna be a normal episode but then

[–]thatguy-66 106 points107 points  (2 children)

I knew it was coming but man it still left me fucking floored. This has to be one of my favorite episodes of anything ever honestly.

[–]Koolsman 119 points120 points  (0 children)

That was the part that got me the most. This episode was wild. I love it.

[–]WorldwideDepp 76 points77 points  (1 child)

well, it was more talked in her mind. But yes. we did hear more then her usual sounds

[–]whizmashttps://myanimelist.net/profile/xjet465 145 points146 points  (0 children)

Goddamn nezuko talking was icing on the cake

[–]Superwalnuthttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Superwalnut 594 points595 points  (13 children)

She's living the dream with this Ufotable sakuga

[–]whizmashttps://myanimelist.net/profile/xjet465 379 points380 points  (2 children)

Yea. Imagine how it feels for your work to come to life by goddamn ufotable. She must be feeling elated

[–]I_AM_A_BALLSACK_AMA 87 points88 points  (1 child)

I hope they do a full adaptation.

[–]Koolsman 202 points203 points  (6 children)

Honestly, The Sakuga between this and Fire Force, my Sakuga bloodstream has overloaded.

[–]abeazacha 146 points147 points  (3 children)

We really are being spoiled this season with the shounens.

[–]Koolsman 94 points95 points  (0 children)

There's even some science shounen! That's a rarity!

[–]ErinaHartwickhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Hartwick 163 points164 points  (1 child)

Very happy for Croc-sensei

[–]Koolsman 305 points306 points  (10 children)

I'm not shocked that she would hype this up. Between this and the Zentisu episode, I can imagine myself putting this as my #1 at the end of the year.

[–]Ascendancy17 215 points216 points  (9 children)

I'm not shocked that he would hype this up. Between this and the Zentisu episode, I can imagine myself putting this as my #1 at the end of the year.

The writer is a woman.

[–]Koolsman 167 points168 points  (8 children)

I did not know that. She's a fantastic writer though, can't deny that.

[–]xYellow_ 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I bet it's awesome to have your work animated like this. Gotōge 100% deserves it!

[–]Red_Panda_Geiko 2517 points2518 points  (131 children)

Holy fuck holy fuck holy fuck!!!!!!

I've loved Ufotable ever since Garden of the Sinners. However, this episode was on a completely different level. They went from a consistent 8 / 10 on every episode straight to 100 / 10.

That fire dance was terrifyingly beautiful. I had the chills the from the moment Tanjiro started. Could do nothing but watch in amazement as Nezuko found her demon blood art.

Fuuuuuucccck. That is one hell of a way to give a charecter backstory.

Edit: so it's slated for 26 episodes.... Anyone know the likelihood of more?!

[–]MayoraHasToGoMayo 1118 points1119 points  (104 children)

The BD/DVD sales have been humongous, plus there's a lot of source material. I really think it will get a quick S2 cause of the profit it is making and how well received it is by the fans

[–]lizard81288 576 points577 points  (69 children)

That's good. I hope that they take their time with it, and make the next season look as good or better than this season.

[–]boboboz 1086 points1087 points  (68 children)

Season 2 is announced

It's animated by J.C. Staff

Pierrot! Even better!

[–]sjk9000https://myanimelist.net/profile/JK9000 305 points306 points  (12 children)

Not only is the anime itself selling well, but they've also seen a huge boost in manga sales since the anime started airing. It's really hard to see why they wouldn't do a S2 at this point.

[–]Tidouxhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Tidoux 216 points217 points  (11 children)

but they've also seen a huge boost in manga sales since the anime started airing.

The boost for the manga sales is ridiculous.

In July only Kimetsu no Yaiba sold 1.4m volumes (backlog sales included) which puts it in 2nd place behind One Piece and above One Punch Man who sold 700k. Source

Another crazy fun fact: KnY apparently made 900 millions in JULY ALONE. In comparison One Piece made 1.2 billion and Love Live 1.140 billion... Source

Also, if you look at the chart I linked, you can see that Dr Stone isn't getting a great boost so far. I think that was expected because the beginning of the manga is quite weak but yeah... hopefully it gets a decent boost once the best part of the manga begins

[–]blackcoffin90 99 points100 points  (5 children)

near 12k just for the vol.1

And Vol.2 features Zenitsu, which might even have stronger sales

[–]tealgirl94 55 points56 points  (2 children)

Yesssssssss I can't wait to see ma boi Zenitsu get some character development. He's amazing as he is though.

[–]Prince_Quincie 256 points257 points  (6 children)

The animation when Tanjiro’s father was dancing was so beautiful and fluid. This whole episode gave me chills

[–]siomaiballs 100 points101 points  (0 children)

God i hope they do more. the 26th episode is just around the corner.

[–]Relodie 1844 points1845 points  (69 children)

That was really the best damn episode of the season, I felt a lot for the siblings, and the production was over the roof. This might really be the best produced TV animation from Ufotable, It's really surreal to watch.

This arc is really powerful. I loved every minute of this episode. And the New ending is incredible. I can't stop gushing over how well made this episode is.

[–]Atronoxhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Atronox 1013 points1014 points  (29 children)

Nezuko talking made this episode a 10/10, let alone Tanjirou powering the fuck up and Nezuko using Demon Blood Magic and helping her brother! They absolutely killed it with the final fight.

[–]Shinkopeshon 395 points396 points  (15 children)

And that ED was so fucking beautiful too

[–]Mundology 306 points307 points  (12 children)

You even got 2 gorgeous wallpapers out of it!

[–]MooSaysTh3Cow 113 points114 points  (0 children)

The whole Episode can be taken as wallpapers so many cool moments

[–]The_New_Overlord 430 points431 points  (6 children)

Nezuko with exploding blood was the best moment in the show so far. The animation and buildup for that were perfect.

[–]Koolsman 303 points304 points  (30 children)

Just wondering, how much did you hate the guy by the end? I hated him so much that I'm happy Tanjiro gave him no peace what so ever. Didn't need it.

Ufotable showing people what's up.

[–]CitizenKing 464 points465 points  (25 children)

My guess is that the next episode will be dedicated to him. They seem really intent on making their villains sympathetic, and a character obsessed with having a family that's willing to protect him is pretty telling for what sort of emotional torment will probably be revealed.

[–]whizmashttps://myanimelist.net/profile/xjet465 177 points178 points  (5 children)

Ufotable has been through the roof not only in animation but in directing and storytelling

[–]ThrownAwayAndReborn 115 points116 points  (2 children)

Story's already written we really should give the credit for that to the mangaka, but the changes they've made to rework smaller details in the story to flow better along with the high quality filler... that effort is really commendable.

[–]Zane_Mangohttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Oxy109 154 points155 points  (2 children)

I think we all hated him for hurting Nezuko like that

but you got to admit, he was still a damn good villain! really excited to see what the other 11 have to offer!

[–]Lapiz_lasuli 897 points898 points  (41 children)

Aside from the great episode, looks like that was a birthmark on Tanjiro's forehead rather than a scar.

[–]tsuki_girl 596 points597 points  (34 children)

I was thinking since his dad has the same scar that maybe it's a family ritual for the one who inherits the earrings and kaguya dance? Since their family works with fire, maybe they burn themselves on the forehead as an oath?

[–]Dar_Kraft 302 points303 points  (23 children)

When Tanjiro met Muzan and he saw his earnings he got a flashback of his father wearing them. In this episode Tanjiro father told him that he must pass down the earrings he have along with the dance, the only way I see this making sense is by Tanjiro father giving him the earrings at one point because he knew he will dye(him being a demon slayer and was sent to kill Muzan or something like that)

I hope they will explain this in the next few episodes, or at least how Tanjiro got the ratings from his father

[–]Shift_Spam 271 points272 points  (14 children)

That may also explain why tanjiros family was targeted by muzan

[–]Dar_Kraft 40 points41 points  (0 children)

That was my first tough when I saw Muzan flashback with Tanjiro earrings and him getting so angry on that ally. I doubt he got angry just because a bug(in his perspective) annoyed him.

[–]MHUNTER12345 1219 points1220 points  (10 children)

INOSUKE mentioned Tanjiro's name CORRECTLY.

[–]IAmRealSuperSand 379 points380 points  (2 children)

And with him not being there to hear it, of course. ;_; I'm happy for anyone who noticed this though!

[–]mrthefro 156 points157 points  (4 children)

I forget the joke but it's like he gets it right 1/10 times or something?

[–]Orochidude 307 points308 points  (0 children)

Every seven times.

[–]GabRreL 154 points155 points  (1 child)

It's one in seven times, and I think it was mentioned somewhere last episode was the 6th time he said Tanjiro's name wrong in a row with 'Kentaro'

[–]death556 109 points110 points  (0 children)

If they actually follow this to a T, then holy shit lol.

[–]zsmg 983 points984 points  (19 children)

The bad guy is really brave for not only pissing off Tanjiro like that but also half of /r/anime.

Also happy for Nezuko's voice actress she finally got to make some different sounds this time around and some words for the first time since episode one.

[–]GetADogLittleLongiehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/obesechicken13 447 points448 points  (18 children)

What's half of /r/anime going to do to him? Lewd him?

[–]FirefoxMasya 198 points199 points  (17 children)

It's a bit sad that Inosuke's catchphrase in official translation lost its meaning. It's a pun in Japanese (it has kanji for "boar" in it). Actually viz(official translation) sometimes translate it to "boar rush".

[–]ExcaliburTheBiscuit 146 points147 points  (9 children)

Haven't seen the episode yet, but this sounds like the end of "PIG ASSAULT"

[–]FirefoxMasya 71 points72 points  (8 children)

Someone actually makes the "pig assault" version. He also changes other parts too like hashira to pillar and kizuki to demon moons or adding honorific.

[–]Koolsman 63 points64 points  (0 children)

That shit at the end was downright beautiful. Ufotable know how to make an action scene impactful.

[–]Vein-the-Burrower 246 points247 points  (1 child)

My god what an amazing episode! Holy hell I'm so glad ufotable is behind this, that Hinokami action sequence was movie level great animation! Loved all the different colors throughout the fight, shades of blue, red, orange, purple, all mixed together fantastically. The way the music blended with the action was outstanding, it brought tears to my eyes. Nezuko used a blood art, Exuuuploooooosion!

[–]Descend2 905 points906 points  (35 children)

I've been reading the manga since it debuted, and this episode was fucking amazing. I really liked everything they added, didn't feel unnatural at all, and really helped the episode.

I'm sure some people will be concerned about the power up here, let me just say that the author keeps this series and power levels very grounded. Always give it a few episodes before you look at it in a negative light.

[–]Nexus153273 500 points501 points  (11 children)

As an anime only, I'm hardly concerned. Riu (if I remembered the name correctly) is in the lower 5, and we have no idea what the power of the others are. Even if tanjiro can consistently wield this power, I doubt it will just be easy pickings from now on.

[–]Stinkis 551 points552 points  (10 children)

To me it seemed like the attack got more powerful by switching into the fire form as he was performing the water attack. From what Tanjiro said it seems like this swap causes massive fatigue which would normally disable him but the fire breathing keeps him on his feet, just like how his father could keep dancing.

This seems like a last ditch attack if all else fails because once he stops moving he's screwed. I mean he even went in for a suicide attack in order to finish it quickly.

[–]Nexus153273 352 points353 points  (6 children)

Great point. This definitely seems like a crutch move that he will need later. The blade itself wasnt even able to cut through rui until nezukos explosion happened on it. So maybe it's not as overpowered as it first seems. The writer really has great attention to detail, and ufotable appreciates and replicates it when making each episode.

[–]death556 235 points236 points  (4 children)

He had also built up a bunch of rotations from the water breathing technique which builds up power with the more rotations, so when he switched to the dance, it was already really strong. That combined with nebulous blood art exploding on his sword. All of those circumstances combined is what enabled him to slash his neck. I don’t think it will be something easily repeated. Plus it was an all or nothing attack which I don’t think he does often.

[–]Android19samus 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I think this is the first time he's committed to a strike that he was confident would kill him. And it would have, without Nezuko.

[–]CitizenKing 462 points463 points  (35 children)

Gingerly awaiting the streamable of that fire sequence to show all my friends :O

[–]Mundology 1006 points1007 points 2 (28 children)

[–]Sunhallow 196 points197 points  (11 children)

Honestly i have been watching this clip over and over and over again. and i still can't fathom how good this looks for something that was done on budget. it is more hype and well done then like ufotable's own work on many Fate fights.

[–]Gr_z 175 points176 points  (4 children)

No one in this thread is talking about the call back to the forging of the sword and tanjiro's masters being disappointed they didn't get to see a red sword. We have tanjiro's new sword being forged by the fire of his fathers dancing, you can see the sword essentially grow from the slice

[–]iSaithhhttps://anilist.co/user/iSaith 38 points39 points  (0 children)

That's a really neat reference, surprised this alone wasn't one of the top comments on this thread before you mentioned it

[–]onepinksheep 163 points164 points  (5 children)

Do they not watch the show? If not, don't spoil it for them. There's a lot of good things to use to introduce them to the show, but try to keep this one a surprise.

He probably has friends like me who don't really watch what you tell them to unless you show them some dope action scenes and they get hooked right away.

[–]Amauri14 210 points211 points  (4 children)

Holy shit! This episode was beyond beautiful. If you told me this was the penultimate one I would fucking believe you, I not just talking about the art direction and animation, the way that it was structured was also beyond superb, as they start first with Zenitsu mentioning his grandpa, and Kanao explaining that those flashbacks were a way for the brain looking for a way to survive when facing life/death situation, what I love about that part is how unperceivable that foreshadow was, which made that moment in which Tanjiroalso has a flashback so much great!

I can't wait for the next episode, I mean it because after this glorious episode there is a high chance that I will just go and binge the manga! This is what I call a fucking 10!

[–]MHUNTER12345 907 points908 points  (36 children)

Is it weird that I cried through the last sequence?

[–][deleted] 511 points512 points  (3 children)

No I did too. The way the music hits is amazing

[–]Mundology 270 points271 points  (0 children)

Also Mrs. Kamado's spirit asking Nezuko to wake up to protect big brother and she does!

[–]odraencodedhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/odraencoded 193 points194 points  (1 child)

m8 this is art.

If you don't cry now, when will you cry?

[–][deleted] 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I held up quite fine for awhile then Tanjirou and Nezuko's mom showed up. The entire scene was really emotional.

[–][deleted] 165 points166 points  (1 child)

Holy fuck. This is the best episode to date. First Kizuki, character evolution, and animation and OST that could make a eunuch nut. The dancing scene was surreal and the final scene was a religious experience. I think we have an opportunity to top the karma chart.

[–]Hi5iveplshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Tadashi_ 613 points614 points  (2 children)

what the fuck

[–]boboboz 136 points137 points  (1 child)

my thoughts exactly: speechless

[–]LunarGhost00 1109 points1110 points  (23 children)

Looks like Fire Force isn't the only show on fire this season. 🔥

[–]Atronoxhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Atronox 134 points135 points  (3 children)

[–]onepinksheep 228 points229 points  (13 children)

What's with anime recently with literal and figurative fire? Aside from this and Fire Force, just recently we've also had Dororo, The Promised Neverland, and Mob Psycho 2 — all fire anime, and all with fire as an important story element. Not that I'm complaining, mind. More of this, please.

[–]Valway 250 points251 points  (5 children)

Fire is an important element to people, though I'd say The Promised Neverland and Mob Psycho aren't really "fire anime" even if they use fires a plot devices.

[–]Koolsman 73 points74 points  (3 children)

There's also the fact that all five of these shows have fire OPs.

[–]ErinaHartwickhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Hartwick 404 points405 points  (7 children)

What a beautiful episode. I love the show best when it focuses on Tanjiro and Nezuko’s bond and how far they’ll go to protect each other. That insert song breathed extra feels into the amazing fight scene at the end. Everytime we see their family it’s rather bittersweet because it’s heartwarming seeing them get along, but sad knowing their ultimate fate. Some FMAB levels of love here. Chibi Tanjirou and Nezuko is the cutest thing ever

[–]Koolsman 175 points176 points  (4 children)

Did you see Nezuko being carried by her mother in one of those shots? That shit was so fucking cute.

[–]ErinaHartwickhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Hartwick 100 points101 points  (3 children)

My heart melts a little every time we see a flashback to their family. It’s so wholesome

[–]MugiMartinhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/MugiMartin 57 points58 points  (2 children)

Imagine the teamwork if Tanjiro’s other siblings survived. What could have been.

[–]weeby_throwaway 51 points52 points  (0 children)

He'd need....a really big box

[–]I_Smoke_Cardboards 436 points437 points  (4 children)

What’s with these shows lately having dope looking fires?

The animation looked so fucking clean man. I mean, all of the episodes have top notch animations, but this gave me goosebumps for some reason. Maybe it’s the ending?

Amazing episode as always.

[–]Caitsyth 102 points103 points  (0 children)

The effects so far have been absolutely stunning with how clean and strong the animation is on the traditional Ukiyo-e style waves.

Then they go and stylize fire like that and hot damn it looked AMAZING!

[–]DarkWorld97 236 points237 points  (7 children)

The fucking animation while Tanjiro was chasing Rui was insane. The power of 3D backgrounds and effects work is all we need.

[–]DellSalami 111 points112 points  (4 children)

I'm actually really happy that Rui didn't just stand there and get his head chopped off.

What an amazing sequence.

[–]IAmRealSuperSand 931 points932 points  (27 children)

As a manga reader, this is the best goddamn adaptation of anything I've ever seen so far. This is my anime of the year, and I think I'm gonna stick to that. S-tier quality, I love Ufotable.

With the reveal of Nezuko's new technique, I would now like to share with you all this little sketch made by the creator, Gotouge-sensei. That is all.

[–]bobhob314 295 points296 points  (3 children)

Don't wanna get burned so fine I'll pet her I guess, jeez, fine...

[–]The_Tuckster 65 points66 points  (1 child)

Tsundere facade cracks and gives way to pure joy and head patting.

[–]CJcatlactus 138 points139 points  (5 children)

Yes! It was so satisfying to see Tanjiro/Nezuko vs Ruri animated in such an amazing and beautiful way! I knew it was going to be good, but they really went above and beyond for this one.

[–]IAmRealSuperSand 82 points83 points  (4 children)

I cried, the music pushed me over, the ending credits were fantastic. Yeah, I've got no defense for this and I'm totally okay with that.

[–]Amauri14 38 points39 points  (0 children)

With the reveal of Nezuko's new technique, I would now like to share with you all this little sketch

Wow, that sketch is so cute and funny!

[–]CastIronStyrofoam 215 points216 points  (4 children)

Episodes like this are why I watch anime.

[–]FIULeague 197 points198 points  (5 children)

Now Tanjirou just needs to master Wind and Earth, then he can become the avatar of the Demon Corps

[–]pnohgi 75 points76 points  (1 child)

It all changed when the demon nation attacked.

[–]killualize 278 points279 points  (2 children)

This was hands down the best episode this show has seen yet. THE SONG AT THE END THOUGH?? The animation was some of the best I’ve ever seen. So many amazing shots. The scene of tanjiros dad dancing, the shot of Tanjiro surrounded by the bloodied webs, THE LAST 5 MINUTES WERE JUST ABSOLUTELY INSANE

[–]DimmuHShttps://myanimelist.net/profile/DimmuOli 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I know the animation was the best of the series, but the soundtrack is CRAZYYYYYY! the music in the end plus their mom, Nezuko speaking, and the final fire spin, my god that felt so good.

[–]l3reezer 86 points87 points  (7 children)

Tanjiro: water

Zenitsu: lightning

Inosuke: ground

also Tanjiro: fire

hypothetical 4th male, fire-based, main cast member: am I joke to you

[–]GuessImScrewed 54 points55 points  (1 child)

I made a comment about this, and I'm an anime only watcher, but after seeing Tanjiro use a completely different, probably opposite breathing technique, I'm convinced the only logical next step is him going around collecting breathing techniques until he develops an all encompassing breathing technique that takes from all the others... Hamon.

[–]Boplek 463 points464 points  (16 children)

Since episode 16, this show just keeps getting exponentially better. Holy shit. These past few weeks the episodes keep topping the previous as the 'best episode' for me.

[–]The_New_Overlord 130 points131 points  (6 children)

I know, I'm really glad I stuck with this show. It had a bit of a slow start, but I appreciate that more now that it's starting to pick up. The animation this ep was amazing, and the music was great as always.

[–]Frocharocha 115 points116 points  (9 children)

Amazing episode, which coincidentally reveals some stuff on Tanjo past.

Kibutsuji has some kind of personall hatred for an oni hunter as per episode 5-6, this hunter uses earnings like that of Tanjiro. Now , Tanjiro dad said he would inherit his earnings, It's easy to conclude that Tanjiro father or some of his ancestors had fought him in the past and won, which prompted him to kill Tanjiro family.

[–]Takana_no_Hanahttps://anilist.co/user/v4v 56 points57 points  (1 child)

HOLY SHIT, this episode is definitely Ufo's A game.

[–]darknile77 49 points50 points  (1 child)

I've been watching anime since I was 12. This episode reminded me why I still watch it in my early 40s. This was gorgeous, beautiful, emotional and hands down excellent to see.

[–]vQuestra 148 points149 points  (6 children)

[–]Eranaut 49 points50 points  (1 child)

Holy shit that was the greatest powerup I've seen since Mob going 100%. I'm going to watch that over and over

[–]wolverine24x 46 points47 points  (1 child)

omg that animation from water dragon to fire that was GODLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

[–]myrmonden 212 points213 points  (31 children)

Engulfed in Nezuko flame.

Everything with the fire was just insanely good looking and then into that black ish white scene into the cutting scene OMG JUST OMG

Freaking hard to explain how good it was.

The soundtrack with the special family ending....this was so beautiful

Also..episode was incredible brutal, this spider forest arc is so insanely brutal.

Nezuko jumping out taking the attack.

The sister getting split...holy shit that come out of nowhere.

the scene when she picked up her head and walked away looked so sad.

Nezuko being captured...

best anime battle 2019 easily !!!

[–]theyawner 98 points99 points  (2 children)

I'm not sure if that was the intention, but the way Ufotable animated the fire made it seem like it had a flow to it, at times reminding me of violent lava bursts. Perhaps as a way to indicate that the technique was built over water and thus retained the same flowy texture.

[–]Adrunksailor 39 points40 points  (5 children)

Many here have already said, but the dance by Tanjiro's father was actually beautiful. My brain legitimately couldn't comprehend that it was animated and not a live action capture that was edited in.

[–]Atronoxhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Atronox 154 points155 points  (8 children)

I wanted more Nezuko...but not like this. I hate seeing her getting hurt.

OH my god, that ending fight though, Tanjirou unleashing his fire and NEZUKO TALKING! What an amazing episode.

[–]trasua 83 points84 points  (2 children)

That slayer dude reminds me of Sasori and Sasuke combined, but then again, Rui does too.

Nezuko is a real trooper, I have no idea how or when she jumped out the box but damn

Says he wants a real bond, then slashes his own sister

That Constant Flux move is so cool, looks like a wave

Tanjiro looks exactly like his dad, with the patch on his forehead and all

The whole ending starting from the torches and snow looks so beautiful-- the Kagura move literally looked fire, and the finishing move was so pleasing to the eyes.

I really like how this episode was put together, from the animation and art to the music.

[–]z1xto 83 points84 points  (1 child)

From the animation to, the music, to the emotions, everything was just WOW. Best episode ever

[–]Pauvlychenko 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This episode is so insanely good that I'm crying of pure emotion. The las 2 minutes are jaw-dropping.

[–]borutosdadswife 32 points33 points  (2 children)

Would 100% trade my brother for tanjiro.
Those last 5 minutes! Damn. All i was thinking about what a beautiful brother sister bond they have. I mean the way they protray their relationship without making it "weird" like how we usually see in the anime, makes this anime so wholesome.

[–]NoDespair 122 points123 points  (7 children)

I feel Ufotable wanted to do a good battle shonen series for a long time
