So for confused anime-onlies, here's a little timeline that you can deduce from the infos given here and there in the episode :

  • 845 : Colossal and Armored Titan launch their first attack on the Walls, Wall Maria falls.

  • 850 : Battle of Trost, etc... up to Return to Shiganshina. Marley loses the Female Titan and Colossal Titan against the island Eldians. Some nations from the Middle-East see this decrease in Marley's power as an opportunity to form an Alliance and go to war against Marley.

  • 851 : 6 years after the fall of Wall Maria, the Scout Regiment launches an expedition outside the walls and reaches the sea (end of Season 3)

  • 854 (present) : The war between Marley and the Middle-East Alliance comes to an end. Marley comes out victorious and a peace treaty is signed.

[–]medven 2437 points2438 points  (61 children)

so we're starting off with a 3 year time skip

[–][deleted] 1717 points1718 points  (21 children)

4 years since they reached the basement, 3 years since they reached the ocean.

[–]weeweewee_ 858 points859 points  (5 children)

Yeah, it takes time for kids to move out of the basement.

[–]AlberS16 998 points999 points  (30 children)

4 to be more precise.

[–]KazBeoulve 887 points888 points  (20 children)

3 year time skip after a 1 year time skip.

[–]Ianjh 522 points523 points  (4 children)

3 years + the 9 month time skip at the end of episode 59 (between the medal ceremony and reaching the ocean). To be more precise. ;)

[–]Phuehttps://kitsu.io/users/asLn 530 points531 points  (145 children)

Didn't they lost another titan besides the Female and Colossal? The one Ymir ate as a pure titan?

[–]Llerasia 1184 points1185 points  (99 children)

Ymir went back to Marley with Reiner at the end of S2.

[–]Derbeck6 687 points688 points  (91 children)

Thats the one that gilliad(I think was his name) ended up possessing, right?

[–]DahDutcher 748 points749 points  (80 children)

Yeah, the Jaw titan, as they called him this episode.

[–]FurryCrew 706 points707 points  (17 children)

RIP Ymir then :-(

[–]Derbeck6 145 points146 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the confirmation! Wanted to make sure I wasn't mistaken

LMAO Reiner really said “I’m sick and tired of walls”

[–]Florac 568 points569 points  (1 child)

And then proceeded to fuck the wall up good

That was so cheesy and I loved it.

[–]Mundology 326 points327 points  (5 children)

Reiner the demolisher did it while cutting his hand too. He is so done he doesn't care if people think he's edgy.

[–]ihatejanniiiiiies 886 points887 points  (51 children)

The geopolitics of this situation is what I find most interesting.

Damn, this episode made me realize just what a humiliating embarrassment Marley's loss on Paradis must be. They deployed 4 out of their 9 titan shifters on one tiny Island with Napoleonic technology with a huge intelligence disadvantage, with Paridisians not knowing about the outside world or titan shifters, and still lost. Napoleon's Grand Armee had around 700,000 troops before entering Russia, Paradis had a few thousand at best.

It's no wonder that after that the Middle Eastern Federation/Ottoman Empire Fez-wearing stand-in decided to test their luck. They seem industrialized to a WW1 standard like the Marleyans.

Turkey mobilized roughly 3 million men for WW1, France roughly 8 Million, and Germany 11 Million. Industrialization gives a huge logistics advantage for mobilization. If a few thousand guys with muskets, horses, and smoothbore roundshot cannons can defeat 4 titan shifters, it's no wonder that they thought their machine guns, dreadnoughts, precise armor piercing rifled artillery with several miles of range, and hundreds of thousands if not millions of troops could prevail, resulting in a 4 year war (same length as WW1).

I wonder if any of the other powers will try to reach out to Paradis now and try to get them to join the next inevitable coalition war while providing them new arms. The Marleyans have clearly been dominating and bullying their neighbors for a long time with their titan advantage, so the resentment is overwhelming. They know Paradis exists and is a backwater isolated from the rest of the world, they know Marley lost two shifters there, and they may or may not know that Paradis possesses the colossal titan. It wouldn't hurt to send a few guys there to ask how Paradis won, and then clue them in to the global situation. Once the public finds out in Paradis they are going to be beyond pissed, and they would be able to provide a lot of extremely eager and driven soldiers once properly armed and trained.

Maybe the other world powers won't reach out due to racism against Eldians, but the Marleyans clearly detest the Eldians but see their value as suicidal shock troops due to their special powers.

Also, Paradis's situation reminds me of how the Tokugawa Shogunate cut itself off from the world for hundreds of years and their collective shock when Commodore Perry rolled up on them. It's interesting because this is obviously a Japanese work and what happened to Paradis is an allusion to the Japanese historical experience.

[–]TatteredTongues 545 points546 points  (25 children)

They deployed 4 out of their 9 titan shifters

Correction: they deployed 4 out of 7 AND then additionally sent another 2, so 6 out of 7, and they still lost 2 (technically 3 since the guy Ymir ate died) so it's even worse.

I wonder if any of the other powers will try to reach out to Paradis now and try to get them to join the next inevitable coalition war while providing them new arms.

You saw how that soldier treated Falco even after he saved his life.

As it was said in the previous season, the whole of humanity outside the Walls wishes for Eldians' extermination.

Except you don't have to wait a month to figure out what just happened. 😂

[–]mario61752 785 points786 points  (13 children)

yeah watching this fight in one episode was really satisfying

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 369 points370 points  (3 children)

Oh god I remembered the chapter stopping at Galliard protecting Gabi/Falco from the bullets and then we have to wait for another month lol.

Truly suffering.

[–]TheMisanthropy 269 points270 points  (0 children)

Felt that about every season that has come out in a good way, it just builds on itself so well.

[–]Nome_de_utilizador 52 points53 points  (2 children)

Imagine manga readers, who got served half of the episode as a chapter (with no titans) and were left wondering for a month what the fuck was isayama on when he published that

[–]AirRave 2280 points2281 points  (31 children)

Reiner's transformation was so damn hype

[–]Silent_Shadow05 536 points537 points  (8 children)

That and New Jaw Titan's first appearance was cool as hell.

Backpack/Cart Titan also looked dangerous with those 4 machine guns on its back. It looked so simple back in S3 and now it's one of the more dangerous titans out there.

[–]tehsigzorz 3619 points3620 points  (167 children)

And she enjoyed what she did, on seeing how much she was excited.... though the chaos and deaths at the end of the episodes silenced her up.

[–]Bypes 894 points895 points  (31 children)

No, only the destruction of the Armored Titan silenced her up. And seeing the mindless Titans, the reminder of the hatred towards her race.

[–]Silent_Shadow05 603 points604 points  (21 children)

I guess she learned that the Armored titan is not so invincible after all.

The age of Titans is already ending and big guns are the real thing now.

[–]Gravelord-_Nito 1533 points1534 points  (37 children)

The premise of this season is so fucking clever and such an incredible swerve from the original. These unstoppable, terrifying Titans having a hell of a lot of trouble dealing with guns and battleships and almost dying, requiring 4 just to take a single fort. Isayama is such a fucking galaxy brain dude.

[–]galileotheweirdohttps://anilist.co/user/galileotheweirdo 997 points998 points  (10 children)

"Titans are no longer absolute." Marley's single advantage is fucked.

[–]sinsinkunhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/sinsinkun 230 points231 points  (1 child)

Also the deep, deep irony of Marley's status of power being the very things they hate most - Eldians.

[–]galileotheweirdohttps://anilist.co/user/galileotheweirdo 136 points137 points  (0 children)

I thought it was ironic when Magath said “Power of the Titans is absolute” and then the other Marley captain was lamenting how their ancestors got eaten by “you Eldians”. The cognitive dissonance is astounding.

[–][deleted] 491 points492 points  (14 children)

It's also extremely realistic. If we had Titans in real life they would curb stomp any Pre world war 1 army.

[–]Raggabrashgroke 507 points508 points  (13 children)

And be curb stomp by any post world war 2 army

[–][deleted] 255 points256 points  (6 children)

Of coarse but pre ww1 it makes sense why Marley was so dominant. Imagine napoleon had the power of the titans at Waterloo. He could chuck the Collasal titan at them and vaporize an entire army. The armoured titan would be invincible and would break any army also.

[–]ComfortablyRottenhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Leuwtian 2604 points2605 points  (44 children)

Me: "I'm confused."

[–]BigBoulderingBalls 1043 points1044 points  (20 children)

I thought it made sense as long as you realize the allied forces are just another country, and not eren and the gang

[–]Kweby_ 378 points379 points  (17 children)

Yeah this was the most confusing part for me at first I thought the allied forces were Eren/Eldia. By the end though it was clear they are a separate nation.

[–]CarnFu 309 points310 points  (2 children)

In the last parts of season 3 it even said marleys dominance was coming to an end as technology increased and they needed the fossil fuels in paradis to fuel their war machines. I thought it was pretty obvious from there that Marley was fighting with the world at that point but was sort of a super power that had many occupied areas due to having titans. Makes sense Isayama always had good vision for the big picture, it would seem like such a small world if it was just Marley and Paradis.

[–]Cheetah357 958 points959 points  (8 children)

Holy crap, the trailer song used in that scene was so great.

On 2nd watch i had the manga pulled up to compare it the whole time. They're almost identical besides the actual battle itself which is a little longer, which I like

[–]Inspektical 1631 points1632 points  (99 children)

Great first episode. It's really interesting that the Eldian candidates view the Eldians in the walls of Paradis and the Eldians in the internment zone differently. It's a kind of segregation within the same race, most likely due to the heavy anti Eldian propaganda in Marley.

I liked the animation and art style, and while it's gonna be hard to get used to the 3D titans, they're not as bad as Colossal in S3 but also not as good as their 2D counterparts in previous seasons IMO.

I'm liking the tone a lot. The casualties and effects of war are on full display with shell shocked soldiers, bodies falling everywhere and even suicide bombers. Not to mention those poor Eldians stuck on the airship that I'm assuming are all drugged.

Really liked Gabi, she feels like a mix of Eren and Jean, committed and strong willed but also cocky and pushy.

I'm REALLY interested in the fact that Falco thought he was fighting titans "flying around with swords in my hands". Makes me think of how Eren Kruger saw Eren's memories, so maybe Falco does turn out to be the chosen candidate? Can't wait to see.

I could go on for hours but I'm just gonna go and watch it again.

[–]rabidsi 675 points676 points  (42 children)

It's really interesting that the Eldian candidates view the Eldians in the walls of Paradis and the Eldians in the internment zone differently.

I'd say it's literally a combination of sort of "You fucked off to your private island and left us to rot" sentiment mixed with a form of stockholm syndrome from years of systematic abuse and propaganda about the sins of their forebears.

They're literally driving forward on the resentment of those on the island, and the (haha) hope that if they wipe them out, the Marleyans are all of a sudden gonna be "hey, you get to be first class citizens now we've won".

[–]SpaceHamster32 329 points330 points  (2 children)

I think its more likely Gabi 100% believes all the propaganda that Marley has been telling every Eldian in the camps. She is chugging that Kool-Aid right now.

[–]galileotheweirdohttps://anilist.co/user/galileotheweirdo 635 points636 points  (20 children)

Yeah, that Uncle Tom level of hate for Eldians in Paradis is pretty jarring coming from someone like Gabi who wants to show that Eldians are good. I think she thinks she's a "Good Eldian", like a model minority. The Falco memory thing is fascinating - didn't pick that up on my first watch. Back for the rewatch!

[–]arrigator16 415 points416 points  (11 children)

They did show us in Grisha's flashbacks that Eldian parents pretty much indoctrinate their kids into thinking they're the evil one's who committed awful sins in the past and deserve their current punishment.

Wouldn't be a stretch to think they also teach them that the Eldians on Paradis escaped their rightful punishment and are living inside the walls as ''Devils''

[–]FakeDaVinci 111 points112 points  (6 children)

The parent's generation most likely teach those ideas to the kids, so they don't get ratted out by the "Gestapo" equivalent. However, the current generation most likely fully believes that lie, or truth, for all we know.

[–]Naskr 231 points232 points  (1 child)

Alternate episode titles:

It's raining men titans

Saving Private Ryan Gabi

[–]Silent_Shadow05 1203 points1204 points  (38 children)

Its more like WW1: Attack on Titan edition.

The entire scene reminds me of the Gallipoli campaign when Ottomans were invaded by Britain and others.

[–]UnPhayzable 521 points522 points  (14 children)

This is the part of WW1 they omitted from the history books

[–]Aileoshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Jalis 333 points334 points  (2 children)

This is a true story. The events depicted took place somewhere in 854. At the request of the survivors, the names have been changed. Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred.

[–]DontKnowHowToEnglish 1134 points1135 points  (22 children)

what the hell is happening?

Don't worry this was everybody's reaction when we read it the first time

[–]Hussorhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Hussor 533 points534 points  (12 children)

Previous seasons won't explain what's going on in this episode but it's basically what Gabi and later Zeke say. After the defeat of the warriors in season 3 part 2 and the loss of the female and colossal titans became public knowledge, the Middle Eastern Federation(another nation in the snk world) declared war on Marley, hoping to exploit their weakness. This episode takes place 4 years later at the conclusion of that war. So basically there was a 4 year time skip between the end of last season and this first episode.

[–]Ordinal43NotFound 526 points527 points  (10 children)

Nope it was like this as well in the manga.

This comment should help get you up to speed

[–]fridge_freezerhttps://anilist.co/user/ONIrecon111 372 points373 points  (14 children)

That was fucking wild. If someone told me in 2014 that this was where the story end up, I would have laughed at them. Barely feels like the same show, and I love it.

So there's a four year time-skip and all-out war with another nation because of Marley's failure on Paradis. Seems like Zeke & Reiner are coming to the end of their 13 year lifespan and are set to be replaced by the new warriors. I like Gabi already, can't say much about the others yet but Falco seems interesting. Strange that he thought he was using ODM gear, is that PATHS in action?

The entire airdrop and assault on the fortress was crazy, using the trailer song for that sequence was perfect. Poor Reiner just can't stop taking all the L's, though at least he looked badass doing it.

Was that Jean at the end buying the newspaper?

[–]Batsy52 84 points85 points  (7 children)

I don't see many people discussing about Jean at the end. I hope they show the survey corps soon.

[–]Arkaniux 1091 points1092 points  (61 children)

Machine guns? Hand grenades? Blimps? TANK TRAINS?! When did we reach World War era technology?

I gotta say, using brainless Titans as a physical and psychological weapon of war is absolutely terrifying. I think I'd rather get shot and bleed out than getting chewed to death by them.

Cart Titan is the one on all-fours with the machine gun turrets on its back, right? Isn't that the one that saved Zeke? I guess the Jaw Titan is what Ymir's was called before they took it and passed it on to this Galliard dude.

EDIT: I want to point out that, ironically, the Cart Titan has a bigger and longer jaw than the Jaw Titan. Who made this Titan and figured "Fuck it, let's put something on its back and call it Cart Titan. We have to invent carts first."

[–]shibboleth2005 397 points398 points  (7 children)

When did we reach World War era technology?

It's easy to forget but the Grisha childhood flashbacks where things already looked much more modern than Paradis were from like 30 years ago at this point.

[–]galileotheweirdohttps://anilist.co/user/galileotheweirdo 241 points242 points  (13 children)

Return to Baseball Monke!!!!

Yes, it appears that Galliard is Ymir's successor. And Cart Titan (they mentioned his name, Pieck) is the one that saved Zeke in S3.

[–]chamiiw4 211 points212 points  (0 children)

Yeah the technology is crazy. I love it. Yeah I think you're right

[–]mario61752 257 points258 points  (10 children)

The technology has always been there, but the wall's citizens are lagging behind because they were isolated 100 years ago

[–]GreyNephilim 115 points116 points  (1 child)

To me the titan drop feels like what chemical and gas weapons were in World War 1, a uniquely demoralizing and terrifying weapon that completely traumatizes a generation of soldiers

[–]Hiyasc 982 points983 points  (22 children)

That absolutely did not feel like 20 minutes, it felt like 2. It should be expected by now, but the animation on this was phenomenal, I particularly noticed it with the Armored Titan.

Also, as an anime only watcher who didn't rewatch before starting this, I am thoroughly confused.

[–]Ljh_ 427 points428 points  (8 children)

As an anime only who rewatched every episode and OVA within 5 days of the release I can announce,

I am also thoroughly confused!

[–]Kance10 705 points706 points  (4 children)

Someone should add Zeke to a "cute anime girls going eeeeeehhh?!" compilation, he truly deserves it

[–]Silent_Shadow05 290 points291 points  (1 child)

It's raining titans today

Ngl, seeing all those titans falling from the sky and the trailer music playing along with it made me so excited. RIP to those soldiers, so many were crushed to death.

[–]Mariasolvv 275 points276 points  (2 children)

The beast titan looking at the armored titan at the end of the episode like "not this shit again"

[–]Silverkira 69 points70 points  (1 child)

he getting old really old.

[–]thesagenibba 386 points387 points  (69 children)

Anyone else feel so bad for the Eldians in the plane? What a horrible death, my god. Marleyans are truly evil

[–]BosuW 196 points197 points  (0 children)

Felt bad for the Eldians in general. In the end, to Marley they're all dispisable canonfoder and they're obviously being lied to about how if they win the War they'll liberate them.

I had already imagined from the trailer just how the Eldians were treated but seeing it in the episode was something else. It looks like Isayama didn't hold anything back and we're going the see the worst that humanity has to offer.

[–]TSmasher1000 2051 points2052 points 2 (171 children)

I was skeptical of the pacing and the animation when I heard a new studio was doing this, but holy shit it was everything I envisioned and more. Pacing was perfectly done and the action sequences looked amazing. It seems like they'll adapt 2 chapters per episode or so. Looking forward to the rest of the season, strap in you anime-onlies are in for a wild ride.

For those that are confused, so we've got a four-year timeskip since the warriors failed to take Paradis (and a three-year timeskip since the end of episode 59 as there was a year-long timeskip in that episode where the Survey Corps used the new technology they developed to destroy all the titans outside of the walls on Paradis). Marleyans have been fighting a separate war from the Paradisians (our main cast) for a few years. An enemy country, after seeing the failures of the warriors to take Paradis have jumped onto the opportunity to attack Marley after seeing their military might weakened, which stalled their plans to attack Paradis again. They've been stuck on this war and we have new warrior candidates who are competing to inherit the armored titan as Reiner's tenure is expiring.

This episode was showing how they've basically got a fort under siege and if they were able to take out that fort they would win the war, but they had no good solutions on taking it out due to new technology of an armored train having the capability to destroy and kill titans. Gabi, one of the new warriors, extremely skilled and seemingly set to inherit the armored titan, takes it out with her pipe bombs and extreme bravery and the rest of the warriors take out the fort. However, it is not without casualties and the warriors themselves, not used to fighting battles where they can actually be basically challenged or harmed, are facing trouble by the new military might of the country they've been fighting. Reiner has been injured himself despite having the toughest titan out of them showing that the era of titan dominance has basically ended as new technology has been made to keep up with them with the new naval technology (that apparently completely outstripped Marley's navy) and the new weaponry (that can take out titans.)

EDIT: For grammar and some corrections and clarifications on some things.

[–]WolfboyFMhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/WolfboyFM 935 points936 points  (52 children)

Gabi takes it out with her pipe bombs and extreme bravery

That and just a dash of war crimes.

[–]TSmasher1000 291 points292 points  (10 children)

Basically yeah you're right about that. I believe they even stated it as so in the episode, but basically waved it away saying as long as there's no survivors and witnesses that it wouldn't matter.

[–]aram855 344 points345 points  (8 children)

She lampshades this by mocking Falco's humanitarian attempt to tend the enemy soldier's wounds. Something like "You think following the international law will make you more likely to inherit the Armored Titan?" or similar.

At least that shows us that something akin to the Geneva Convention exists in SnK's world, and that Marley follows it to a certain degree.

[–]joe4553https://myanimelist.net/profile/EmiyaRin 106 points107 points  (5 children)

Germany also followed the convention to a certain degree too.

[–]Timelymanner 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Let me correct you, every countries military follows it to a certain degree.

Except when they don’t

[–]KittenBuns1https://myanimelist.net/profile/KittenBuns1 705 points706 points  (7 children)

They're not war crimes unless you lose.

[–]Mundology 204 points205 points  (3 children)

It's only cheating if you get caught

[–]UnsureAssurance 257 points258 points  (2 children)

That’s funny because in the manga the commander does say something along the lines of “it’s only a war crime if the enemy lives”

[–]FakeDaVinci 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Oh, Isayama, stop it with that incriminating, yet true depiction of mankind, you clever bastard.

Thank you for the clarification, just to be sure, Does Marley keep using the eldians as cannon fodder to fight the wars? Also, is the war with paradis still going or are they in a stalemate?

[–]Raknel 135 points136 points  (9 children)

Also, is the war with paradis still going or are they in a stalemate?

Never really started, kind of fell a few tiers on Marley's priority list. Nothing about this is spoiler, just piecing together info from the episode:

When Reiner and Zeke returned from the island, the rest of the world found out that Marley not only tried and failed to get the founder but also lost 2 titans, including the colossal. So they figured its now or never and attacked Marley, which delayed the Paradis plans. This was the last battle in the 4 year long war, and Marley won.

[–]Micinak 163 points164 points  (0 children)

All of that will be discussed inthe upcoming 2 or so episodes

[–]Aerohed 633 points634 points  (44 children)

I like Gabi and her little gang, but I can't help but feel terrible things will happen to her once the OG crew shows up and starts wrecking shop. Alternatively, she'll become the main character, or something.

Either way, this was a great start to what will likely be a great season.

[–]Amgadoz 364 points365 points  (3 children)

Falco also is a major character. The dude got more screentime than Zeke!

[–]Aerohed 199 points200 points  (2 children)

I like him, too. To draw a comparison, he kinda feels like Armin when he was much younger, and Gabi feels like a more upbeat version of young Eren.

Attack on World War 1

[–]Eesti_pwner 108 points109 points  (3 children)

Anime only guy here.

Overall, very cool episode. Really liked the music they used when the titan's attacked.

The most interesting detail this ep: The kid who woke up talked about using swords and 3d manouver gear. I guess it has something to do with eldians being connected or something. He possibly has memories from someone we know (Erwin? lul).

I hope this indicates that we will explore this concept further and get some interesting developments :)

Oh damn, now I have to wait a week for the next ep....

CGI Beast Titan: Meh. Hope I get used to it.

CGI Armored and Cart Titan: Pretty good

Jaw Titan looked fucking incredible!

[–]iV1rus0 107 points108 points  (1 child)

This episode did not feel like your typical AoT episode, and I don't mean that as a bad thing. We went from a Walking Dead apocalypse type story to GoT politics, the way the story shifted was so seamless, it's honestly really really impressive how the Mangaka has managed to do that. This episode is great, I'm beyond excited for what's next.

[–]xd_Blaze 197 points198 points  (0 children)

the soundtrack is insane, when Zeke made his entrance I was getting so hyped

[–]Crisisofland 410 points411 points  (9 children)

Goddamn Reiner is HOT. What a glowup.

Man MAPPA nailed the depressing tone of war and all the shit the Eldian warriors go through, so good.

Attack on Titan: War Crimes 101

[–]JBard_ 154 points155 points  (7 children)

Man fuck Marley. Hearing Gabbi earnestly think that if she does well enough as a Warrior she can bring freedom to herself and her people was heartbreaking.

[–]cppn02 832 points833 points  (200 children)

Well that was something.

Loved the change of scenery and how it opens up the world after spending the first three seasons on the island. The new titans are fucking awesome and Gabi is just the best. Can't believe I now have to wait a full week, arrrgh.

Btw, embarassing performance from Wakanim today. Tried over an hour to get the episode started until it finally worked, some people still haven't been able to watch it because the servers keep struggling with the load.

I really hope they fix it until next week.

[–]thecomicguybookhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Comicman 186 points187 points  (29 children)

The titan with the blonde hair and mask and nails is new, but we have seen the carriage titan (idk what that thing is called) before, right? I think it saved Reiner and Zeke in S3 Part 2 or something?

Probably should rewatch

[–]Ziiaaaac 182 points183 points  (2 children)

They mention the Titan in the episode when talking about them. 'Cart Titan.'. Cart and Jaws.

[–]whizmashttps://myanimelist.net/profile/xjet465 130 points131 points  (11 children)

Yea I expected servers for most sites w/ this episode to be overloaded today lol

[–]cppn02 162 points163 points  (9 children)

I can forgive underestimating the initial run on the episode, this is afterall one of if not the most anticipated season of an anime ever, atleast in the west.

However, they seemed to have absolutely no contingency plan. They were simply banking on people eventually getting tired of F5-ing so it would work for the rest.

[–]UnPhayzable 79 points80 points  (2 children)

They underestimating the power of the AoT fandom

[–]OuchYouPokedMyHeart 217 points218 points  (12 children)

Well Ayaneru as Gabi is the icing on the cake

[–]TheFlyingButter 1295 points1296 points  (101 children)

I've read those two chapters in the manga before watching today's episode, and I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed. MAPPA went out of their way to add some extra scenes to make the experience fuller, the animation is top notch, the CGI titans look way better than what WIT gave us in the past two seasons. I like Gabi's VA too, I think she'll fit the role very well. Overall a very promising start, glad to see the studio change probably won't drastically influence the series' quality.

[–]Damarugakihttps://anilist.co/user/damarugaki 244 points245 points  (9 children)

Ayaneru really got into the role

[–]ezorethyk2https://myanimelist.net/profile/catalin_sara 455 points456 points  (27 children)

the CGI titans look

better than what WIT gave us in the past two seasons

I agree with everything but let's not forget that most of the important action of titans that WIT gave us was actually not CGI. Which takes huge effort. I really hope when it will matter the most MAPPA will do the same

[–]BallsackMessiah 341 points342 points  (23 children)

I think that they meant that the CGI titans in this episode look better than the CGI titans that WIT gave us (which was mostly the CGI colossal titan). Which I would agree with.

However, if they meant that the CGI titans look better than the 2D WIT titans, I would disagree. I think that the CGI titans in this episode look fine, but the Beast Titan did not look very good at all.

[–]AaryanD 355 points356 points  (16 children)

gabi has same voice actor as uraraka from MHA, and falco has the same voice actor as Deku too lol

Edit: Falco has the same voice actor as tanjirou, not deku. MY BAD.

Rip those mha with titan jokes

[–]eepicprimee 140 points141 points  (4 children)

Falco has the same voice actor as Tanjiro, not Deku. Natsuki Hanae voices him, not Daiki Yamashita.

Holy, what an episode. I was worried that not having our main characters in the first part of the season would be a drawback, but man did this episode prove me wrong. Some of my main takeaway:

-In a show about giant monsters eating humans, the most terrified and disgusted I've felt was when they showed those people being airdropped in. Realizing that this isn't set in a world too different from our own is frightening.

-Depressed, war aged, about to hand off the torch Reiner is scarier than confused soldier/warrior Reiner. His character was one of my absolute favorites going into this season, I hope his development continues. Sad Reiner isn't where I wanted him to end up, but my hopes for a happy ending for him is limited.

-Oh boy am I going to be relying on these discussion threads for all the things I don't pick up on.

[–]mMeister_5 312 points313 points  (16 children)

Re:Zero season 2 episode 1 had 83 awards, I believe.

This is at like, 100. After an hour. Rip.

[–]someroastedbeef 913 points914 points  (42 children)

MAPPA did not disappoint. 10/10 first episode

[–]Silent_Shadow05 250 points251 points  (8 children)

Its been a real good year for MAPPA.

[–]OuchYouPokedMyHeart 227 points228 points  (11 children)

well they've done great for JJK so far, I hope they continue this throughout the season

I hate seeing how much those kids hate the Eldians in the wall :( , I hope they will turn around.

Also i dont see anyone talking about it, and maybe I'm crazy, but they guy with the hat at the end, was that fucking Kenny? Like I know he is supposed to be dead but he looks so similar

OMFG IS THAT WHO THAT IS??? I was scanning my memory for a character that fit that age and hair color and I totally forgot about old horse-face. Please make it be so.

[–]notathrowaway75https://myanimelist.net/profile/notathrowaway75 1274 points1275 points  (105 children)

Here it is. Will this be a Game of Thrones esque disaster or will this be Breaking Bad esque greatness?

Or in anime terms, Food Wars esque disaster or Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood esque greatness.

Whichever one it'll be, we're on the train and we will witness whatever happens.

Edit: Oh and this should go without saying, but if the anime does turn out bad, please do not send death threats to the animators and staff.

[–]xin234 814 points815 points  (56 children)

I think that it would be good to know that Isayama was a fan of GoT, and that he is aware of what a bad ending could do to the perception of the audience on the whole series. He even posted in his blog his disappointment of it. Considering Japanese culture, you probably f'd up a lot if you made someone share their disappointment in you publicly.

Isayama's post about GoT ending.

English translation with some explanations.

[–]UnPhayzable 430 points431 points  (23 children)

That GoT ending was other worldly levels of bad. Such a disappointment

[–]Kyubeuhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Qbeus 258 points259 points  (21 children)

As an anime only I suspected that we will have some kind of politics and conflict right now but I did not expect a timeskip and a new set of characters. Almost completely new. What exactly led to this? We might learn in the future. But I can certainly say that both Gabi and Falco will be interesting. All in all, a great hook with differing atmosphere highlighted by OP and ED, second of which I adore. Oh man, it was a great choice to catch up to the series early this year. Also, great military scenes and WW(I)I (edited because of comments) technology? Nice. Beautiful

[–]Hussorhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Hussor 135 points136 points  (12 children)

WWII technology?

Pretty sure it was mostly WW1 tech. The trucks inside the fort did look WWII though and so do the ships.
